Excellent review but I think you’re being extremely generous on the 6 out of 10 for price. There is no way you can justify 300 for that especially considering it’s already showing signs that it won’t last more than a couple years. If it was extremely durable and a lifetime product I could see $300

@@jeffthompson8835 This is my first video on this channel but he doesn’t explain lifesaver very well. The life saver filters go down to .015 microns and are designed to purify very very contaminated water. Think muddy flood water filled with human waste. For normal over landing in the USA it is overkill but where the bulk of their products go like natural disaster relief or where communities have no access to clean water they work great. Their largest unit filters 2 million liters and is meant for remote communities. The jerry can also isn’t bad considering it’s 5-6 cents per gallon of water. The S3 is $1.29 per gallon. I found it for 79.99 on amazon and only has 400 uses out of a 20 fluid ounce container. Now I am biased since I’ve been a fan of their products since I saw the founders’ ted talk many years ago where he drank water filled with poop on stage using his products lol. Edit: spelling
With the primary purpose of this unit being water filtration it actually is a good price when compared with other systems on the market. I've tried many different filters over the years and for high capacity daily use this fits the bill rather well. As for the spigot, I rotate mine to the inside of the can, creates far more protection while in transit.
I like convenience as much as anyone, but one problem with “all-in-one” type products is that if one feature fails, the whole system fails. I’d personally rather have a quality stand alone filter system and a separate container. The pressure feature is nice, but gravity works well too.
I have had a lifesaver jerry for about 5 years now and with all the crap going on now it is proving its worth over and over . Here in Scotland and thanks to stormy weather i was recently without power for 9 days . Everything went down including the pumping station and i because i bragged about the lifesaver when i got it (folk dont forget ) i became the local water pumping station for a few days until bottled water deliveries were made . Kettles , containers pots , i was filling the lot for neighbours ,no electricity required .Could i have done that with a Sawyer ,not a hope in hell and I know now that many of my neighbours have went and bought a lifesaver jerry or lifesaver cube . Yes its pricey but what price 100% fresh clean drinking water when you need it and i know in just a few days mine paid for itself multiple times over .
Hey Brad, Thank you for this new series to your already awesome channel! This type of video on gear is exactly what I'm looking for being new to overlanding. Keep the awesome content coming!
Can't you simply loosen the water spigot cap and rotate the spigot 180 degrees to protect it when not in use? At 8:00 you state in my experience plastic hand pumps usually fail. You can’t fault this pump if it hasn’t failed just because you think it will. So, I think you were unjust on quality score? The price seems high, but you get all this in a all-one compact package? Good review though. Thanks
IMO investment only makes sense for ppl like you that can go on week + long trips for the filtration and practicality but shower and pump just make up to charge $300, it'd appeal to more ppl if dropped those 2 features and make it $199. Brad: LOVE your channel and have been looking forward to these kind of reviews! I would respectfully suggest the following criteria for your reviews for consistency and so that others can make more appropriate comments, possibly based on their own experiences... VALUE: can you find a similar item at a lesser price/are you getting additional features when compared to similar items at the same price point? DURABILITY: how likely are YOU to break it? How quality are the components? RELIABILITY: how long before it breaks itself? WEIGHT: how heavy is it compared to similar items/ is it worth having for the extra weight? SPACE: how much external/internal space does it take? POWER: How much power does it use? Thanks again so much for all your hard work!
It's got a lot of nice features. Now we need a company that will price the item commensurate with the actual cost to produce it while still making a reasonable profit, so like the $100 neighborhood. Once LifeSave has some competition they will either have to stop price gouging and price the item appropriately or fail and let the more reasonably priced company put them out of business. Competition is a wonderful thing for the consumer.
Hey Brad, love to see the evolution of the channel (been following for years, possibly since ever) and evidently you’re continuing to produce very carefully crafted content so thank you for this. I’d have just one suggestion on the Recon Gear Score (RGS) I think it’s better to average it out to 10 which is a number more appropriately geared (pun intended) to reviews. I think we all are used to scores based on a 0-10 scale. My 2 cents. As always keep the good content coming.
Brad, I think you're spot on with 6 of 10 for the price. If I translate that to price you're saying it should be $180. Given some knowledge over costs of good water filtration cartridges and then considering the can and other accessories, I agree that gets it up to the $180 mark...no higher than $200. They will likely sell many more at the $180 mark.
LOVE the Def Leopard & Van Halen album jackets on the garage wall, EXCELLENT albums. Love the content. Hope to be getting my 1st Jeep (a Gladiator) soon.
Yes it's expensive, but might save your life as Brad pointed out. I would like to see a re-review after a year to see how durable it is. Oh and i like the Doug Score idea! :)
This is a survival/disaster H2O system as well. I do see the practicality of owning one. I might purchase one. My personal budget H2O system that I use around camp is a 2 gallon painted black weed sprayer. I drilled out the nozzle holes just slightly(for more flow). It is excellent for showers, extinguishing campfires ( and very small fires), rinsing off dust from jeep. I don't use it for food preparation.
This is going to be a great way for people to make decisions on gear you’ve tested and or purchased. Excited for the next one! Hey and go get out on some trails! Ready for some asmr wheeling/camping! Maybe do some trail safety stuff?
In the first minutes of the video this reminded me of the pressure feed fuel system on a very old type of car called a "Stuts Bearcat" . Every so many minutes the driver had to pump a handle to create fuel pressure .
The key with the Lifesaver is that it will remove viruses. The other water filters out there will not. When you are in a situation that requires you to drink water from an unknown source, I trust this water filter. Everyone talks about how Berkey Water filters are the gold standard but they do not filter out anything below 0.2 micron. The Lifesaver will filter down to 15 nm (0.015 micron). You can get a smaller unit for $150, it's called the Lifesaver cube. I own a Jerry can and just purchased a cube this week.
as much as you overland having the piece of mind with the built in filter is awesome. For the average weekend warrior probably too much. But as always an awesome review Brad!
I love all the comments about it being overpriced, and they could make one on their own for cheaper... sounds like all the "But I made the best AR platform rifle for under $50!" comments we see; or those crapping on Patriot Campers because they are a premium setup at a premium price, or hell, why would anyone buy a Rolex when a Timex for $30 will still give you the time.... yup... just like all those. Not every product or price range fits everyone's budget or needs. And trust me, whatever "you" have, there is someone who can shit on it as easy as those shitting on this product. Sometimes you just want "more", and sometimes there is a market willing to pay for that. Let the market dictate. Cheers!
Hey Brad, good vid on this product. I used this all summer and it’s lived up to expectations. Mid summer, I purchased the hose (comes separately) and thought it was not to the same quality. It’s not long enough to be a shower, and the pressure not great...but, I love the hose for KP after a meal! Also, purchase the extra disk filters for the future! Overall, it’s more peace of mind to have drinking water at all times! Jim
the one thing that you didn't get into at all is the major points it should score on it's microfiltration. there are many corporate videos as well as foreign aid departments that go into great detail on the filtration membrane being the best available period. it filters much tighter than the smallest known virus or bacteria, this sets it apart from many other portable filtration solutions out there. Great video and glad to see it in use on the trail out there but definitely pricey!!!
I have been doing off roading for a few years, but I like to leave all my home amenities at home and have real adventure with the minimum. A 5 gallons bucket its more than enough and a couple 2.5 gallons of fresh water from Safeway.
Be careful with the can, the micro filtration is good when you use pre-filtration, if you use no so clean water you will clog the straws and will end up with no water at all, also the carbon should be before the membrane and not after, also the amount of carbon filtration is not the greatest, activated carbon works on contact time, and it looks like you have about a 1/32" in thickness, normal carbon filtration normally runs in a 2.25"x 10" filter, which gives you 1 year life, also once you use the filter carbon will tend to create bacteria, if you keep the wet carbon for a few months you can introduce bacteria to you final water out of this unit, hope it helps and enjoy the outdoors.
I like that Idea. It looks like a rugged system and getting water anywhere would be really cool. It is a bit pricey. I like my onboard water system. And thanks to you Im gonna add a filter to the system haha.
I wish you would Re-Visit External Fuel containers. My Rotopax have ALWAYS dribbled fuel over my car/ME/my clothes and the spring loaded locking mechanism never seems to work. A good Brad suggestion would make a great episode or partial. JUst came back from Death Valley and got stinky from fuel spilling so apologies if I'm a bit heated
Very cool. Has lots of corks and features haha. I would like to get one myself. Little steep in price but sometimes a little extra for Quality and usability is worth it. Great video Brad! Hope to see more reviews coming.
I checked this out awhile back when it was on sale at REI and like it's functionality. But for that much money I can have redundancy with all same features for less. Plus a water purifier as stand alone vs filter. Mil Spec water can, small air pump, few other parts and fittings would cover the ability for portable plus sprayer. As a plus most could be stored inside of water can until needed. Known heavy duty, can be sanitized with bleach.
I've heard that the filter has a shelf life once you start using it, and that it also has to stay wet once it has been wet. Hopefully it isn't the case but that along with the price is why I haven't already picked one up.
I dont know about using it for a shower, but to have it as an emergency filtration can be very useful when you're off the grid. it's definitely an investment at 300 bucks, but in the long run it's worth it. I think would get it linex to keep it lasting long time
Great review! Glad you are doing a series on gear! It’s kind of pricey, but knowing you can get clean water out of every scenario justifies the cost IMO. Great all-in-one emergency preparation jug for a weekend excursion or the end of days...
Great review. I think you were very fair on the ratings. I have two standard plastic gerry cans on my rear bumper, and a 12v pump with a hose and shower spray nozzle that plugs into my rear 12v accessory port, and has an in-line water filter I added. I'd say the operation is pretty seamless, cost under $100, and I can quickly move the pump line from one can to the other.
@@bbb129 Which is why I noted that in my DIY version, I have an inline filter from Sawyer that is actually superior to the filter in the Lifesaver version. So, yes, with mine I can also filter "sewage" water.
@@5thGenNativeTexan but doesn’t that sawyer only last a small percentage of liters compared? Where’s the sawyer version? I’d like to get something, dang near bought the life saver. Have a hard time anything filters better than the life saver at like .015???
@@bbb129 I stand corrected. For everything but viruses, the filters are the same. But it depends on your location. In the US, the chances of encountering harmful viruses in the water are almost none. For the super conservative SHTF people, if this was your concern, then I'd say go for it. But for 99.999% of the people who just want to use this on the trail, it's about $200 more than you need. ;)
So you said to fill it up from a stream. What is your experience as to the taste of the filtered water from less than quality sources? And what do you do to clean it out after using those sources?
Maybe Not for garden variety camping, but as part of your bug out/survival gear? Absolutely! I have 2 of the 40,000 gallon versions in my emergency preps. Clean safe drinking water can be lot harder to secure then it seems. What’s your family worth?
I like your review and can't wait for more on different things but this can, well for $300 I can buy a lot of gallon jugs and a filter to compensate for the life expectancy of this water container.
Hi. Love the channel 🙂 I had a question. So recently I've been wanting the jeep Wrangler sport. Sadly I couldn't get it down to a monthly payment of 410. I know I know, the wrangler is expensive and idk maybe I thought they would of went for it. But they didn't. But then I started looking at the 2019 jeep compass trailhawk . I've been loving it and looked up alot of stuff on it. What do you think of it? I would love a honest opinion on it
Wondering if anyone has tested the @dometic Go Hydration jug and faucet with the @camelbak Reservoir Filter Kit? Seems like a perfect match but am wondering if the flow rate of the filter affects the performance and functioning of the faucet.
After more research and after I ordered a unit, I have come to the realization the UK is not supporting US markets very well. Its very hard to find information, spare filters and accessories. This is not a cheap unit and the US customers deserve a better business model.
Great container with nice features. Clean potable water that’s a very important feature for drinking and cooking. But it seems a waste for showering with. Would not want that feature myself. A better tap would be nice and it looks fiddly to use. But I would not pay that much for it myself. Great honest review thank you 😊
Thanks. I did and learned that once opened, the filter must always be kept moist and is only good for 3 years, even if the maximum gallonage isn’t filtered. Also, the Charcoal filters are good for only 660 gallons.
for 300 it should come Rhino lined. with extra filters and orings since the rings fall off so easily . awesome product for an all in one solution. i like it.
In an emergency situation this is every bit worth the money. There is no messing around with the same size can and pumping water in from say a Pure or Katadin. Brad since you first used it I keep going back a looking. Christmas list item........
Built in filtration and pump is a big plus, price is a little steep but it could be a Lifesaver literally. So for emergencies and SHTF scenarios I would say yes it's worth the money. Would I purchase one? Probably not, I have water purification gear that is much less expensive and much more portable.
Is the filter outlet cap keyed to only point the spigot straight out, or can you loosen the cap a rotate the spigot inward and retighten during storage/travel?
Like, wish there was a way to skip the filter when I'm using potable water from a know source. IOW, having the filter is worth it, but want to bypass it unless necessary. While your reviewing jerry cans, can you review fuel cans, too? Your Alaska trip had some cool cans with a carrier so they wouldn't fall over when in the back. Want a solution like that.
It is a cool product and thanks for the review. I've made it 67 years without one, think I'll stay with what I've been working.
Agreed! Nothing beats a store bought plastic gallon jug. Its free with a gallon of water.

Not every product or price range fits everyone's budget or needs. And trust me, whatever "you" have, there is someone who can shit on it as easy as those shitting on this product. Sometimes you just want "more", and sometimes there is a market willing to pay for that. Let the market dictate. Cheers!
Unless the spigot is indexed to only fit on one way, you might try fitting it facing towards the handle to protect it during transport.
Exactly, I've started rotating it so I don't break it again.
A must have. I wish the Joolca propane water heater had a jerry can like this that works with the stock pump.
Just a small critique. You should mention if you received the products for free for review. That may skew your ratings especially on cost.
Brad, can you just turn the spigot to face away from the opening when it's stored in the truck while on trail ? That would help protect it.
Yep, 100%. Lesson learned, don't travel with it sticking out!
Jim
Great info from another user... oh and I hate KP duty! LOL!
A little Doug DeMuro style....very cool !! Very nice piece of gear. I will save it in my Amazon list !
Doug DeMuro for sure lol...
- Awesome... I really enjoy your channel. Hope you will be hitting the trails soon. Take care.
Very informative! Thanks, Brad!
the one thing that you didn't get into at all is the major points it should score on it's microfiltration. there are many corporate videos as well as foreign aid departments that go into great detail on the filtration membrane being the best available period. it filters much tighter than the smallest known virus or bacteria, this sets it apart from many other portable filtration solutions out there. Great video and glad to see it in use on the trail out there but definitely pricey!!!
How do you possibly keep track of the liters/gallons to know when to change the filter?
I have been doing off roading for a few years, but I like to leave all my home amenities at home and have real adventure with the minimum. A 5 gallons bucket its more than enough and a couple 2.5 gallons of fresh water from Safeway.
Looks like a pretty sweet piece of gear! The filtration is a life saver!
Very much so looking forward to this series and more cool gear reviews. Really wanting this unit now. Need to save some pennies lol
Looking forward to this new gear review offshoot.
Brad I’d like to see you review that jet boil base camp stove that we saw for about two seconds on one of your videos.
Are you guys still building the Tacoma?
Dam that pretty cool, but pretty expensive 😬
At $120 I’d buy one and keep the rotopax too. At $300 no way.
@@davidmoran6398 I would be happy with $120, that sounds good
Exactly 😊
This filters sewage water.....
@@5thGenNativeTexan from what I read sawyer filters .1 life saver .015 HUGE DIFFERENCE!
@@bbb129 I stand corrected. For everything but viruses, the filters are the same. But it depends on your location. In the US, the chances of encountering harmful viruses in the water are almost none. For the super conservative SHTF people, if this was your concern, then I'd say go for it. But for 99.999% of the people who just want to use this on the trail, it's about $200 more than you need. ;)
Can you please review containers to carry fuel, fuel bag or jerry gas can pros n cons, love your scoring system. !!
Where do I find the hose attachment. I looked everywhere. Is this a DIY?
Thanks for the review! Videos like this are very useful!!
Glad you like them!
Water is priceless especially clean water! 💦
I made something similar with a Jerry can and battery powered pump. It works well but I never thought of adding a filter to it, maybe I should try.
So you said to fill it up from a stream. What is your experience as to the taste of the filtered water from less than quality sources? And what do you do to clean it out after using those sources?
Can you turn the spigot around backwards while in travel then turn it back around when you need to use it
I got the HydroBlu version and it is working just fine and it's half the price Better choice IMO.
Hi. Love the channel 🙂
I had a question.
I would love a honest opinion on it
Semper Fi ! Love the channel.
Wondering if anyone has tested the @dometic Go Hydration jug and faucet with the @camelbak Reservoir Filter Kit? Seems like a perfect match but am wondering if the flow rate of the filter affects the performance and functioning of the faucet.
will those holes fit a rotapax set up ?
While we’re on the topic of water what’s with that paddle behind you brother?
How much are the replacement filters and how often will they need it ?
After more research and after I ordered a unit, I have come to the realization the UK is not supporting US markets very well. Its very hard to find information, spare filters and accessories. This is not a cheap unit and the US customers deserve a better business model.
Great container with nice features. Clean potable water that’s a very important feature for drinking and cooking. But it seems a waste for showering with. Would not want that feature myself. A better tap would be nice and it looks fiddly to use. But I would not pay that much for it myself. Great honest review thank you 😊
I think the shower head is more designed for applications like washing wounds, etc. It's aimed at military and disaster relief scenarios.
Great video
Thanks for the info
I suggest the watching the "Traveling Together Journal" review of this product before making your decision.
Thanks. I did and learned that once opened, the filter must always be kept moist and is only good for 3 years, even if the maximum gallonage isn’t filtered. Also, the Charcoal filters are good for only 660 gallons.
@@robertdeloatch8378 I believe it's a good solution for specific needs, but not a "one size fits all".
for 300 it should come Rhino lined. with extra filters and orings since the rings fall off so easily . awesome product for an all in one solution. i like it.
Is it possible to screw in the spigot facing to the rear so it's safe during transit, then rotate it to it's proper position once at camp?
In an emergency situation this is every bit worth the money. There is no messing around with the same size can and pumping water in from say a Pure or Katadin. Brad since you first used it I keep going back a looking. Christmas list item........
Built in filtration and pump is a big plus, price is a little steep but it could be a Lifesaver literally. So for emergencies and SHTF scenarios I would say yes it's worth the money. Would I purchase one? Probably not, I have water purification gear that is much less expensive and much more portable.
Great review! Thanks for the video👍
Is the filter outlet cap keyed to only point the spigot straight out, or can you loosen the cap a rotate the spigot inward and retighten during storage/travel?
They dont have one that automatically pressurizes? Or a hack that does the trick?
Like, wish there was a way to skip the filter when I'm using potable water from a know source. IOW, having the filter is worth it, but want to bypass it unless necessary. While your reviewing jerry cans, can you review fuel cans, too? Your Alaska trip had some cool cans with a carrier so they wouldn't fall over when in the back. Want a solution like that.
When you have money to burn.... a $20 water can and a $16 Sawyer bottle filter will be fine for me. Like your videos, keep them coming.
I HAVE ONE . ONLY FOR USE IN EXTREME EMERGENCIES . THANKS LOVE YOUR VIDEOS . BE BLESSED .
Love the review!
But $300 for a jerry can is tooooo much. I mean it’s double the price of a waterport and only extra is a filter.
Great review and video but would have liked to see the water get tested and see how clean the water is.
yes that's a great ,fill it with river water and take a sample it to the health department for testing .Do a before and after count on bacteria
