The reason there are no results to her weight loss at first is that Pepper sneaks out at night and gorges herself because she's hungry from her lack of dinner, thinking "Everyone already calls me fat so what's the use in denying myself this huge meal without restraint." Its...remarkably realistic if a bit dark. She also refers to herself as "an out of shape butterball." later in the episode after her exercise routine, telling the audience and herself that she thinks she hasn't exercised enough yet.

I loved Horseland as a kid, specifically the horse Pepper, and now I wonder how many others were affected by that episode. It was actually the episode that popped into my mind when I saw the thumbnail. Rewatching those scenes where Pepper says those things about herself... chokes me up since that is exactly what ran through my mind as a teen, and still sometimes does. It makes me wonder if I was inspired by Pepper or if it was always there even as a kid and that it just waited in my subconscious until I was already down.

I hope you're doing better now (and at least from your post, it seems you are, so that's awesome). I'm sorry the episode had such a negative effect on you. The episode was so irresponsible with how detailed it was, and how the way everyone behaved was actually encouraging the behavior (they did show that negative side effects came along, but it seemed to be framed carelessly overall and not discouraged enough). Honestly, I don't get why they had an episode centered around a topic like that period. The show was not built to tackle such heavy themes, neither in writing skill nor episode time. And I guess that was a running issue throughout the show's runtime. I never personally watched the show when I was younger, but the idea that *that* is what they were showing to people my age is terrifying. This is why it's so important to critique children's media. This cartoon is older, but there were plenty of things even then that had more tact and grace than this show.

You're not your disability!" which completely undermines our struggles. I fucking hate it because it's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation, no matter what your disability is.

This may be due to the fact that he is owned by Bailey, though this is unconfirmed. Shep is also known to harbor an extreme desire to murder and eat Teeny, but he conceals this fact by offering advice to her and putting up a gentle laid-back front in her presence. His unsatisfied lust for blood, power, and respect gained through knowledge is what motivates him to remain at Horseland, along with his loyalty towards Bailey.”

When you learn 2D animation, one of the things an instructor will usually mention is that horses are notoriously difficult to animate without extreme simplification (Like MLP:FiM levels of reduction,) due to not only their strange proportions, but the unusual ways their body moves as they gallop. Part of what makes James Baxter as prolific of an animator as he is is due to the fact that he is one of the few who can animate horses extremely well. So to make a 2D animated show with an extended cast of horses with only barely simplified designs... Is ambitious, to say the least.

You are SO right about portraying bullies. My daughter would have loved the mean girls if they were portrayed that way. And even though the the girls are in middle school, she wouldn’t watch it now when she’s in middle school, it’s way more age appropriate for kids 5-8 and at that age, the sassy pretty girl is absolutely aspirational.
And I’m so sad they didn’t misguidedly decide to roll with the girl plot/ horse plot and make her horse blind too so that the other horses can be mean…
Because then it’s a blind girl riding a blind horse and that would be hilariously bad and on brand tbh.

    • @DustyHoney

That would have been amazing because you literally can ride blind horses. There are even blind show horses. It’s not uncommon, either. A lot of horses develop cataract and lose their vision. I'm a horse girl, I see horses, I watch. There's a lot of incredibly stupid horse media out there.
The thing about this one is how it doesn't actually teach much accurate info about horses at all. Kids ride without their helmets, don't check their girths, rush up to horses they don't know, run around the stables constantly, take jumps they're not trained or prepared for, tie their horses unsafely, stand directly behind hroses or walk blithely behind them, ride during lightning storms, yank constantly on the mouths of their mounts, and put the horses into situations that could potentially kill both the horses and rider. None of the horses are trained for kids, as they spook and bolt, kick, and bite.
At best the show tells you things you can do with horses, like jumping and western and dressage. I recommend watching the Bob's Burger's episode where Tina gets riding lessons and meets Plops for a gentle transition between this and the real world.

So you’ve gotta clean it and put in new bedding everyday more or less cuz they also sleep in there. A farmhand would have noticed the pile of food right away.
Also just wanna mention that the brush that Chloe is using when she notices Pepper’s hair falling out is specifically a brush designed to pick up undercoat and shedding hair. The animators literally just picked a random horse brush and used it for this scene.

And then on top of that I also identify as bi and non binary, so I get the shit show from that too!
It's like a compass where every direction is just a different flavor of sewage.
People can just say things like "you don't look autistic", "you're not that energetic, so I don't believe you have adhd", "but you have to pick a side!" or "but biologically you're still a woman" and I'm expected to be kind because "they don't know better".
I'm not allowed to respond with stuff like "that's because autism isn't a physical disability, but a mental one. It's a difference in our brain, not a difference in how our body look", "that's because the chaos is in my brain, not my body", "who says I have to pick?" or "why do you think I want that surgery you refuse to do because I MIGHT want kids despite there being valid alternative ways to get a kid?" without being called an idiot, rude, delusional or met with responses like "well, how was I supposed to know that?", "I'm sooooo sorry!" (In a way to force you to reassure them that its fiiiiiine) "but my 5 year old cousin has that too and he behaves nothing like you!" etc etc etc.
Gosh, just let me play video games with my hubby, leave me alone in public and respect my boundaries/limitations. It's so fucking annoying when I have to scrunch up into a tiny ball during my bus ride because someone keeps invading my personal space and I'm too anxious to say anything while it being VERY clear that I don't feel comfortable with it.
Also while I'm ranting, can we please bring back seating accommodations in grocery stores? Not just for people who have stuff like painful bones or such, but also for cases like lightheaded, out of breath (like an astma attack) or stuff like autistic people getting a sensory overload from the loud noises, people entering their personal space and the overwhelming amounts of scents in the tea isle. I had that exact thing happen earlier today and I had to heavily lean on my cart and the pillars to make sure I didn't fall over. Seating accommodations would make situations like that much less scary and dangerous as well as just improving the shopping experience in general. After I navigated my way out of the tea isle and through self checkout, I had to find the nearest bench outside just to make sure I didn't pass out or had a breakdown during my commute home. Stuff like this could be prevented by just implementing small things like seats or quiet hours in stores.
Anyway, that's my ranting for now 😅

Disposable horses because daddy’s money can get another one that you can ride into the dirt, how mean/racist/biogoted they all are, the cliques (can’t spell it) of barns, money is the only way to reach high-levels in show, etc. The horse world has a trend of making their PFP’s into edits of them and their horse(s) in the Horseland style. It’s iconic in the community. I actually am one of the comments on the original Horseland JR game videos. Love this series, grew up on it and the online game.
EDIT: About the weight episode, if people are wondering why Pepper is getting so big, they should ask Zoey since she give her 50lbs of oats for dinner?? Weight is one thing, 50lbs of oats should’ve made her colic????? Is she trying to kill her?? Cartoon logic, tf.

Horseland did not cause my ED, that was definitely a few life situations and events, but more than once I actively used Pepper's actions because while the show didn't explain how bad it was, it did show valid ways to unhealthily lose weight. Like pretending to eat, hiding food, over exercising without eating, and the reality of body dysmorphia. Bright, colorful and eye catching enough, but almost always contains a paper thin story, limited animation budget and repetitive character design to create new ones through recycling in a way to make Ed Boon blush. Usually created to sell merc. If the cartoon has a fanbase that lasts more than 10 years that's a lucky coincidence. Perfect examples like this horse cartoon are:

I heavily appreciate how clear you have made the point of being careful when addressing potentially harmful topics to children, and how presentation of an issue can significantly impact how a child views the world. Adults have the habit of creating problems for children by informing children of those problems in the first place. For example, by insisting to kids that bullying is a problem, children then pick up the idea that “bullying is common” and instances of bullying then increase. I’m glad to see that you have reiterated this problem throughout the video when different difficult topics come up.
I have the strong belief that eating disorders would not be as prevalent among children if schools covered the topic better. The eating disorder curriculum I was taught with focused on teaching kids exactly what an eating disorder entails, basically giving kids a handbook explaining exactly how to restrict their food intake and what negative thoughts they might be having about themselves. We were told that teenage girls often hate their bodies and restrict their food intake because of it. That perpetuated the idea that the teenage girls in my class must hate their bodies because the teacher said that’s what teenage girls do. And then the teacher provided 2 weeks of extensive eating disorder research, giving us packets full of information on how to restrict our food intake. I strongly hypothesize that if we instead focus on teaching children how to healthily balance their meals and fitness in the best ways for their own unique bodies, the number of children with eating disorders would be lessened.
Another example of adults creating a problem is the failed DARE program that increased alcohol and drug use in teenagers with branding claiming that it’s common for teens to partake in the use of harmful substances.
As the upcoming generation to be raising kids, we should take responsibility in reframing our education about upsetting topics such as these so that we aren’t perpetuating hurtful behaviors in the next generation.

Oh my God, the anorexia episode is too real. A few years ago I was desperate to lose weight and did the same thing, relying of shitty protein shakes and only eating when around others. I started losing the weight and, just like the episode, everyone was happy for me. I got more compliments and people told me I looked happier. In reality my muscles felt tense all the time, my stomach hurt regularly, I was beginning to get migraines and eventually developed a heart murmur. Did you know that quick weight loss/gain can be a big stress on your cardiovascular system? Neither did I.
I looked good, just like how everyone wanted me to, but I didn't feel good. And for as bad as being a fat person is seen in our society, it's way worse to force yourself to starve. I'm more or less back to the weight I was before I started and I'm fine with that, but I definitely screwed up my relationship to food and still find it hard at times not to get upset at myself for having some ranch on my salad. 0/10, not worth it, I hate fat phobia and mainstream diets.

@@cynderwolfstar7664 An absolutely awful thing for a kid to experience. It won't be easy but we'll be okay. Every meal might look different or be incomplete, but as long as we keep in mind that it's not the food or us that are the problem, it's the culture and their treatment of us, there's room for recovery. You've got this, friend, listen to your body's needs over the others.

My favourite character in the show was always Will; probably because his purpose in the show was to share horse trivia or gently teach the Aesop of the day. He was the least likely to be catty, insensitive or racist.
Also, as much as I love the line about horse racism, it is a bit of a thing. Horse breeds, like dog breeds, have different personalities that are expected. Draft horses are known for being calm and gentle, Thoroughbreds are highly spirited, Arabians are highly intelligent and somewhat high-strung. I'm more annoyed by the inaccuracies than the 'racism'. Paints are bred to be friendly, calm and highly trainable, not 'having no attention to detail'.

What I give Season 3 credit is showing how Will sounded a little older and had a more western voice well Bailey sounded a little older was meant to show the Cast was a little older and leaving the message and Moral that Life moves on but sometimes getting older means still learning and seeing things in a new light

Relating to episode 7 and 8; my great grandfather was a show horse trainer. He once had this one who was there to learn to stand on its hind legs. When the owner came to pick the horse up, she was told she needed to give up, because the horse was not capable of the trick- likely neurological and not correctable. Continuing would end up with it getting hurt. The woman was furious. She grabbed the whip and ordered her horse to try the trick. It reared up, tripped, fell, and broke its neck. Traumatized my great grandfather.

With the way Chloe and Zoe treat Nani I can't believe that they haven't said some STUFF to Alma and Molly (nor can I believe how passive those two are when confronted by Chloe & Zoe's racism)

I don't get why they'd be racist towards Nani but not Alma, considering the fact that both they're both native American. I guess the twins are propably two of those stupid white people who think most Latin Americans are actually Spaniard rather than native because the Spaniards minority forced the native majority in these colonies adopt Spanish culture. Or who knows, maybe they know Alma is native too but they probably think she's one of "the good ones" because she dresses and acts like a white, European girl.
