So incredibly helpful Bill! I've been sitting here with a new Etrex 30x and a bike and a sunny day up in the mountains. Now I can go for a ride!

Best info I’ve found on the etrex. Another tip is if you buy a cheap power bank with no smarts, it won’t think it’s connected to a USB. You can run your machine directly off this.

Bill, thank you these short films have been incredibly helpful. I have had an etrex sitting in a drawer unused for a couple of years. Your films have given me the confidence to try using it. thank you. Your delivery and presentation is wonderful. I used to ride about 20 years ago, not only bicycles, not horse. Cheers Bill.

Bill, I've learned more about setting up my 30x from your videos than all of the others I've watched. Thank you!

Excellent series. A mini-USB to USB-A is the cable to connect the GPS to a computer.
    I’m waiting for videos 7+

Thank you very much, Bill. I now feel like I've launched myself into the 1990s finally hehehe I live in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado by Ouray; we have tons of hiking around here. This will be most helpful to have the knowledge of finally knowing how to load a hike onto the gps. My next goal will be to learn how to make up my own routing and get that loaded up.

Thank you, so glad I found this video. Now I have been able to upload all my GPX tracks to my Garmin Etrex 22x. I have subbed and look forward to watching some more tutorial videos.
    All the best, Dave. 👍

I'm glad you figured it out. The process for the new etrex's is a little different. I need to update the video as fewer people are using the old hardware/firmware.

@@billwingle2520 Yes, Bill. The process is slightly different but still easy to figure out by following your instructions on this video. One annoying thing is that if you add several GPX files at the same time they lose there title and are all called "Track" so you have to view each track in Map View then go back and rename them. Not a major issue but it takes a bit of time if you are adding 8 files.
Excellent videos, Bill, keep them coming.

    • @billwingle2520

@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout Actually there is another way. In USB mode, you can create a subdirectory called "archive" in the \gpx directory and copy your gpx files there. Next, unplug the GPS, start it normally, and go to the Track Manager. Go into the "Archived Tracks" and mark the desired file as a favorite. They then get bumped up to the main Track Manager page where you can hide and show them normally. A nuisance of an extra step, but it works and it preserves name info in the file.

Hello from athens bill! I just bought an etrex 32x. I load the gpx on it but I can’t find them. When I push the back doesn’t take me to the roots. Any idea?

    • @billwingle2520
      @billwingle2520  2 года назад +1

The 32x uses a newer version of the firmware than I discussed in the video. It does things a little differently and unfortunately requires extra steps. If you use a USB file to directly load your files, follow these steps. I'm assuming you are connecting using MS Windows and Window Explorer, but other OS's should be similar.
      1) Connect the etrex 32x via USB. It will connect like a USB jump drive. This may take a minute.
      2) Open the directory \Garmin\GPX\Archive\.
      3) Copy your GPX file(s) here.
      4) Disconnect the USB cable and turn on your etrex 32x.
      5) Go to the "Track Manager" page.
      6) Select "Archived Tracks".
      7) You may see a long list of dated tracks. Scroll down past these until you find your GPX file.
      8) Select it.
      9) You will go to a new screen. Here select "Make Favorite".
      10) Press the back button (top right on edge of case)
      11) You should now be able to scroll down and find your new GPX file on the "Track Manager" page.
      12) Select it. On new page, select "Show on Map".
      13) Hit the back button to get out of the "Track Manager" until you get to the main menu.
      14) Select the "Map" page. Assuming the GPS knows where you are, you are near the track, and you are at an appropriate zoom level, you should see your file track.
When I say "select" above I mean highlight the item, and push straight in on the toggle button.
I do need to make a video of these steps.

    Hi Again Bill.
I have a big concern about Basecamp. I have the 4.7.3 version which no longer allows me to download any map. As soon as I want to transfer a map from my computer to the Basecamp application, the download frozen halfway. I saw several comments on this subject on the web but nothing to solve the problem.
I'm trying to get maps from BBBike. Any tips for that?
    Thank you for your time.

    • @billwingle2520
      @billwingle2520  3 года назад

I personally use Basecamp as little as possible. I just find the interface awkward. I looked at extract.bbbike.org/. I hadn't seen it before. It looks like they have a bunch of Garmin formats. I might try working through them an see if any work. I would try loading something very small and work up; see if you can load anything. If you find something that works, trying loading multiple small files. If you need to load one big file, you might try to figure out where Basecamp is putting the file in the Garmin filesystem (check dates and names). If you can figure out where Basecamp is putting it, you may just be able to copy your file there directly like I do GPX files in the video. The following is more of a desperate reach. I used to make topo basemaps for Garmin's before they finally released decent quality maps. This was 10+ years ago. The process was time consuming but once I had a map package file, I loaded it directly onto the microSD card that hides under the batteries. The Garmin looks to see what's on the microSD card and loads it if it can. If you can get your file onto a microSD card in its root directory, it might just load.
