Great video. Got a 64st a few years ago and couldn’t find much good info or videos on how to make custom maps with tracks and waypoints and kind of gave up on it and put in drawer. Stumbled across this video and gave me great info and time and some motivation to get it out again and make maps and do some more adventurous hiking.
Great to hear - the 64 is a solid unit - the interface can be a bit tricky at first but once you get it, you can basically understand every other Garmin
@@Hikingguy Thanks for the response. Another question, I have some KMZ files that I have copied into my garmin's CustomMaps folder but when I go to my device - map setup - configure maps, I do not have the custom maps option that I can see on yours, any idea what's causing this?
@@dz2k It might mean that the KMZ files are not compatible for whatever reason. I'd reboot the device and see if they show. Otherwise you might want to check here: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=cVuMqGHWaM7wTFWMkPNLN9 - and then dig in the Garmin support forums.
Great video! Which version of Caltopo you are using and when I open my 66i and go to my map setup and then to configure maps, the custom maps doesn't come up...please advise. Thanks
Hard to do tech support but if the custom map isn't showing up, it's probably not on the device. I'd confirm by mounting the Garmin as a drive and looking at the files. && I'm using the standard online CalTopo - good luck!
* Hi, great videos. Got a question. I’m off to do the Everest Base Camp trek in Sept, and looking for a downloadable map I can add to my new 617i. I rang the support and purchased Outdoor map+, but that is tedious and won’t work because of the distance and terrain. * Is there way I can down load a map with the route already on. For example All Trails.
You can create your own route / map in AllTrails (desktop works best > My Maps) , sync it to your phone, then download the offline maps there. Also noticed this: www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/nepal/province-1/everest-base-camp-trek You can export the GPX and load it onto your Garmin too.
I'll try my luck with this on the 30x when it arrives, but I'm on a PC so hopefully it wont be too different. After the layers were brought in I didnt notice a "save as" when it was sent to the device so I'm only questioning how to save the section of the map I want to send. But nice demo of how this is map builder works.
Greaaat Video & tips. Do y know if this maps work well on Etrex 30x? Really thanks if u could respond, because for Brazilian money the pro caltopo is not so cheap... Best regards
Good quality video. I didn’t realise you could only plot tracks on custom maps. Could you have sent it to your fenix 6 Watch? Does it look the same ? Thanks
Thanks for the great instructions. Quick question on overlaying a second type of map with Caltopo or GAIA. If you overlay a map on their site and then send that KMZ file to let's say a GPSMAP 66i, is that sent as a merged type map or will you be able to still hide the overlay in the GPS and see the original first map only in the GPS? In other words, does that KMZ file keep the individual files and still allow you to change the transparency of both maps once it is moved to the GPS?
Great video but I cant get it to work. Garmin says the map has to be under 3GB which result in a map that can not present any detailed view, it looks like the map must hold more "pages", can you help??
Hey. Do you know if there are free downloadable maps for Magellan GPS units? Like Openstreetmap? I have an Explorist 610, but cannot find any open free maps for it. A real bummer. Thank you.
Great video. I'm planning to hike in Colombia but it's difficult to find adequate maps. I know there are literally thousands of trails there but in my experience the only place where they can be barely visualized is Google Earth. Any advise? You really do a fantastic job.
I am a total newbie at this so please forgive my ignorance. I gather that in order for base camp to work with detail you have to purchase other maps? Otherwise the shell is just a lil more detailed than my e10 is this correct? Thanks in advance Base camp online help is bogus
Do not know what has changed, but the subscription is a bit high, down loaded the maps, can not use. Just tossed $50 out the door. It will not save a file as a KMZ and Basecamp say the file that was save can not be read. So disappointing,
Trying to load a KMZ of roads that are basically just a bunch of Placemarks drawing lines through coordinates. When I load these onto my 66i, some of are said to be too large "An image file in a Custom Map is too big". None have any images related, and when I pair down what I'm loading on the device, I don't see the "Custom Maps" option showing above my other installed maps. Any ideas? Are these kmz files loaded properly and just enabled silently and by default? If so, do I only see them when I'm "within range" of these items, b/c scrolling to where I should see some of these roads, I don't see anything?
Ugh - not sure about that one. But it's supposed to show up when you are in range of them, and just double-check the map settings to make sure they are enabled with nothing on top. I found this online which might help > Experienced the same problem, and found that reason is not in file size but in file name. My file name had contain "special" letters of my language, and when I renamed it,file works properly. You should check your file name, which have to contain only english alphabet letters, no commas, dots..Not sure about numbers. Delete your file from GPS. Then rename it everywhere it appears, in folder on your PC, in Google Earth places list and in properties window of your file in GE. Then upload your file to your Garmin Custom Maps folder again. That worked well for me! I discovered that, knowing my file size is not bigger than others loaded, so i start investigation what else could cause the problem... Good luck!
I’m way too old to understand 99% of this. I’m ll just keep my Garman state map loaded into my unit because I don’t plan on going into a different area. However, with all that said , it’s a pretty cool way to get the most accurate maps.
Good morning can you direct me to a video showing me how to get open street maps into Basecamp? Please consider me a DUMMY, I need step by step! I have a Etrex 20 that I've had for years and still don't know how to us it. Ive got Basecamp on my computer, I've worked with the map that it comes with. ( non route-able) This video was helpful for customizing, and getting the map into my Garmin, but if I don't know where or how to down load the maps into basecamp, then the info in this video is useless to me. In short I need BaseCamp for Dummies. PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

It looks like free Caltopo account no longer allows free KMZ download. Thanks for this tutorial.
yea you need paid now but worth considering, not a bad deal
Thanks mate, cheers from Angola 🇦🇴 ÁFRICA
Very awesome. I’ve been trying to find a great video explaining customizing maps for Garmin. Much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful! 👍👍
Dude i really appreciate your tutorials, since it's not possible to purchase Garmin maps(or anything else on that matter!) in my country. Thank you.
Cool cool glad it comes in handy! 👍
Your vids and knowledge are great. Thank you I’ve learnt loads 👍
Looks like I should be able to load custom historical USGS topo maps onto my Garmin 65S. Sweet.
Thanks for the vid dude! caltopos is awesome!
Just recieved my garmin yesterday. Thanks for these videos!
Have fun with it!
Thank you very much sir! Really helped
Thanks a lot for doing this video and the website. I want to find one Garmin that I can use in the car, on the bike and in the back-country.
GREAT VIDEO......(no stupid intro)
Right to the point.....(thumbs up) + subscribed.
Thank you 👍👍👍
Does this require a purchase of CALTOPO? I'm using the free browser option and can't see the download as KMZ option
Yes, since I released this video they've moved that into the first paid tier unfortunately.

Great video. Can you make the Route directly in CalTopo and after import to Basecamp?
Yup
Am I understanding this correctly? I have to be a pro member to get the KMZ file?
Now you do, when I did the video, you didn't.

Think it's only handheld GPS units: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=cVuMqGHWaM7wTFWMkPNLN9
OK have garminmap 64st. Install extra SD card to load more maps. ?? How am I or do I read from the SD card?

The KMZ is just one layer, all jammed together.

Use the guide here to spit out some custom OSM maps and all the trails should be on the device.
I was able to run the batch file, I see it on Basecamp in the maps tab. when I go to map installer it doesn't show up even tho it does in Basecamp.
hi, is there exist anymore a version for mac m1? where to download?
On the website export function is not functioning (grey) , any idea?
thanks

You can use free OSM maps and it's great. No need to purchase anything. Look for the article on free maps on my website.

I would contact CalTopo support, they are good with helping. It definitely works, I've done it many times.
Do you have to pay for the topo service to be able to add this map to your gps
When I did the video you didn't, but now CalTopo requires a premium subscription to do this. Not too expensive though and worth it for me.
Will CalTopo work with a chrome book?
there's an Android app so if your Chromebook can download Play store apps, you should be okay
Is there a way to export MGRS maps to Garmin Tactix Delta; at say 1:25,000 scale?
I think this only works with Outdoors Handhelds, not watches.

I guess it depends on the file size.
