- Step 1 of this "no compromises" aquarium upgrade is the stand. It is literally the backbone for everything else and is also one of the main reasons why I want to shut down my current tank.
Let me explain why I chose extruded aluminium, why it was a better choice for me, where I got it from and what it cost me. Oh, and how long it took me to build it!
If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to chuck a comment down below.
I truly appreciate all of your support so far!

I'm so excited! I can't wait to see the next stage.
thanks mate!
Oh man! i dont know why im this excited but i cant wait to see this tank come along, love how your bringing us along the journey! that thing is built like a BEAST!
Built tough!
Great work Sam. Looking forward to see how this build goes. Will give us inspiration for our next build.
Thanks Anthony!
That stand is an absolute beast Sam. Can't wait to see it all come together
Cheers Peter!!!
Nice one mate! Looking forward to see the progress.
thank you so much!
Absolutely love that, and you were brave enough to show the original invoice on top of that 😂
Excited to see your new build mate ❤️
hahaha thanks mate, yeah I did question whether to add it or not but I knew I would get asked the question 4000 times if I didn't :P
Just picking up this build now, super excited to see the future of it. Luckily for me i can binge the series
You’ve got a heap of content to watch!!! Enjoy
Woopah the show is on the road , great stand 👍👍👍👍👍
All systems go!!!
Magnificent start. Very professional video that shows the thought that’s gone into the build. Impressive Sam. Lov it.
Thank you very much!!
@@ParkersReefBuild and presentation is awesome. What is the thickness of those aluminium bar and what is those things which you inserted at the foot of the aluminium stand?
Sam, a great choice IMO. 80/20 looks so Aesthetic, sleek and yet strong at the same time. My light rack is 80/20 and holds six 4ft T5’s 👍 I’m glad I made the choice to go this route. You’re stand looks great. Congrats and looking forward to seeing your new build come together.
Thanks heaps!
Looks awesome mate!
Thank you!!
Looks fantastic
Thank you!
Congrats for taking the plunge with the extruded aluminium stand. I remember you asking opinions about the material on Facebook a while ago. I very nearly went this way for my 6 foot tank but after building a new house it just wasn't to be this time around. Really interested in seeing how you end up tackling the cladding though. It was something I didn't quite get around to figuring out either.
thanks man. You know I have been throwing this idea around for a year or more now. Ha yeah, need to work that out soon as I want it to look good - not look like a factory. Will be right though :)
NIce! I am currently working with AluFab the same company that produced Tidal Gardens stands right now and in the work of building my dream stand for my 220 gallon tank and I am really excited. ATM my build cost is roughly the same as yours but subject to change as I am working on including vertical bars to be able to hang lights off of it as well as magnetic doors and panels. Good work is not cheap I agree whole heartedly. Their team also runs the data to make sure my tank will be a bespoke work of art that last a lifetime or as long as I don't go even bigger(cough..400gal) 😉.I have had my share of DYI projects cost just as much or lil more than a professional work in the past that could a have been done right the first time around. The back and forth buying the wrong item and returning items wasting or short of product costing money and time just winging it lol. Also the not warping overtime and non rust issue is a must in my book. I also have had a wood stand on my 220 for the last 9 years now and i see the wood deforming here and there as well. Seeing your project give me confidence for my project !! Kudos Sam
Thanks mate, good luck with your new dream build. Sounds amazing!!!
Thanks for the shoutout! Hope you like the design!
Thanks for making great products at amazing prices, if I was on your side of the globe I would have been buying through you guys!
Got two stands from you already and I love it so much that my last order was for an RO filter bracket that I designed myself out of 30x30 profile. Thanks for being awesome and big shout out to Anthony B. for his patience through both design stages. Thanks again.
Exciting! I just ordered mine from Framingtech. I think I’ll try to use hdpe or pvc panels that fit flush in the openings held with magnets.
Great idea!
Awesome man I have soo much of this at my work it’s crazy, gave me a new idea of what I could build with it
Go for it! It's great stuff!

I know i'm 2 years late, but awesome choice! If my latest purchase, (funnily enough it's a 7x3x2 as well) didn't have the good old steel stand, that does need a fair amount of tlc, that was my next option! Good to know there are firms here in Oz that will help out!
Sure are mate! And this stand has been an absolute beauty too!
Nice choice👍
cheers mate, I know you like yours!
Great video and well explained. I had to go the poor man route and built mine out of wood with some hue led lights. Kept the filtration/plumbed everything into my closet giving the tank/stand empty and glowing underneathe
Nothing wrong with that, sounds cool!
Great video, great shirt, great job :)
Hahahah thanks mate
Great stand, quality costs but worth it in the long run. Lots of stands over here have acrylic or coated coloured panels like the modern kitchen ones. The normally have a bracket that locates into the bottom support beam and then just held on with magnets, simple to remove and can be easily swapped out if you want to change colour scheme.
Thanks for the idea. I don’t mind the magnet idea, but hoping for some nice hinged doors - see how we go
I am designing my dream tank and i was looking for a good stand, Tank you so much,
My pleasure. Yell out if you have any questions.
So awesome 👏 I like the Elos idea of having removable panels secured by magnets. I really love this project and would like to duplicate it
yeah I did think about magnetised panels, but I do like a hinged door more :D
Parkers Reef you can have both, check this out ruclips.net/video/2_S3B1lI2ds/видео.html
We are using this a lot in manufacturing. So many options. We use 80/20 for machine guarding etc.
It’s pretty cool stuff!
BTW, great choice on the stand material.
Thanks!
It's a perfect stand Sam I love it. Great video too. I'd been thinking about building one of these for a while. Being able to visit the same places to know what I need is literally amazing.
I was wondering if getting a tap and die set would make it any cheaper, with the premise that you might later down the line use it to build more stands?
Thank you! Yes you could tap the threads yourself easily enough and that would make it cheaper
Would love an extruded aluminum stand - so awesome. Great to get an Aussie tip for when I move back and need to get a custom ;)
Jeez an hour and a half - would take me 3 - that seems much simpler than i thought considering how many pieces in the car
Don't think it's too expensive. It will last a lifetime
I'd just use magnets with doors you can take on and off. Also if your wife wants to change the color - no worries
@@sunnygoold9449 yeah it wasn't cheap, but decent value for the quality I feel. And yes, whatever option we go for paneling, it will be replaceable which will be pretty cool. Great way to give the aquarium a fresh look too.
And yeah, I was surprised that it only took 90mins doing it by myself.
have you thought about levelling caster wheenls? like tidal gardens? ive been looking into a designing something similar and im trying to find the right door fittings that is neat and tidy to cover up the extruded alumunium.
I did look into it, but realistically I’m not going to be moving the tank. I have adjustable feet which do lift the tank off the floor which would make it possible to get a jack under if absolutely needed
Excellent
Thanks
Nice stand Sam, you've inspired my new build!
It looks like you didn't use any threat locking agent (eg. mild loctite purple or blue) with the standard fasteners. Is this something you considered? Or did you think the fasteners would be fine on their own over time?
apparently not necessary with these fasteners, but of course you could use some if you wished
Hot damn, no wonder she got the new floor! One thing I noticed, in the States they seem to be using the rectangular 80/20 so that the two end noggins are sitting over the vertical posts and bearing all the weight.
Yeah the top rails sit on top of the posts here too :)
Oh and the wife got floors and a new kitchen 😂😅
@@ParkersReef Ah, my mistake. All good then.
Hi what profiles did you used for your stand?
I can buy locally profile but i dont have design
I want to replace the redsea 750 stand
Here you go, all info on the stand here:
ruclips.net/video/F4pgduPLoDU/видео.html
going to build my stand this coming month
any thing you'd like to share after 3 years ?
stainless steel nut bolts working fine ?
and should I paint the aluminum for extra protection from oxidation or not to worry about that ??
Working a treat! Use quality stainless fittings and cost them in a material that sailing yachts use to stop oxidation and you’ll be sweet
Hi Sam, did you ever consider a steel stand so you could eliminate or minimize the center support? I am designing my stand for a 60x36x28 tank and really think I want no center support.
Considered it yes, but ultimately decided against it. The centre upright is no big deal, plus is removable if i ever need to temporarily
That stand looks great but everything will be exposed. No doors or sides? I'm looking for a new strong stand for my 72" long, saltwater aquarium. Ideas please.
I can assure you everything is not exposed. This is setup one of a long build, check out my other videos (especially the one on cabinetry)
Love the new stand, as strong as my boxed steel and 1/20th the weight. Looks awesome Sam. What material will.you have on top to support the tank and below to support the sump?
Still working through the details. Likely be a a pro lite panel interior and a marine ply exterior, although could be acrylic yet...
Thank you very much for becoming a member too - means a lot 🙌🏻
Membership has its benefits!
I used 25mm marine ply under tank and sump and protected it with 5 coats of marine enamel lacqure. We are 3years 8 months in and it still looks brand new. An occasional wipe with a wet towel gets the salt off and keeps it shining. I also went with Tasmanian oak vaneered doors and gave them 5 coats as well and they look just as good. But I'm a bit of a wood nut, it wont fit everyones taste.
Ps I also used the same adjustable feet, you wont be disappointed in them.
Any updates? I’m working with Framing Tech on a stand now. I will be trying to do a more traditional look for when I deck it out (to match my old house and antique furniture in the room). I’d love to see what you have done or will be doing on the outside.
Yes plenty of updates, keep an eye on the latest videos :)
Nice! Will you be doing a tear down video on the old tank?
you bet, will be covered in a few videos I reckon! Lots to cover
hello I work with the same type of chassis I wanted to know how you covered it to give it a nicer look.
Thanks for all your videos
The material has a clear anodise on it if that was what you mean? Or do you mean the cabinetry?
Hi Sam great job but why extruded Ally and not just welded ally tho I understand the modularity makes it easy to add/ change things etc. Just curious as to why it wasn't an option or it was but this just blew it out of the water?
Yeah that is an excellent point. To be honest, I didn't really even consider it and that isn't a good reason not to! I had my heart set on extruded ally and really just had to get over the bill. I know that plans often change or "re-align" with reef tanks as new equipment comes in and out and having the ability to modify things to accomodate that is a godsend. Plus, the fact that I can assemble and disassemble this to move between my place and the local fish store where we will be doing a fair bit of work on it is very handy!
Can the bottow row hold the weight of a large sump? Or would it be best to be flat on the floor for that to be supported? If you put a tank on the bottom it would be held up by the hardware only, and not the strength of any structure below it?
It sure can and it sure is :)
@@ParkersReef Could you point me to some references on how much weight it could hold etc? Aluminum stands new to me - trying to learn it all for a future build :) So all the weight of the sump is dependent on the screw/bolt from the cross beams on the bottom? wow. If you have a video on it, please link as well. I'll poke aro und to see what I can find.
@@atravels1055 you'd be best off asking your local aluminium extrusion facility for them to design something for you (like I did in this video).
The weight of the sump is actually supported by bolts through the extrusion, not all of the fasteners are the cheap bolt on ones, the type I used you actually cut a thread into the end of the extrusion and drill through the connecting piece
@@ParkersReef Thanks for the tips. Looks like a great setup. Making notes.
Awesome
Thanks for watching
How do you plan to put the doors on it or will it be OPEN?? I love the stand
absolutely plan on putting doors on it :)
Parkers Reef would love to see what kind and how will you accomplish that task look forward to seeing that..
Awesome stand mate! May I ask what the 'maximum kg load' the stand is rated to take?
It was engineers to handle 3500kg with next to no deflection.
ruclips.net/video/F4pgduPLoDU/видео.html
Hello :)
My wife works for a company that uses extruded aluminium and although my desk and a few other things are -bodged- made using it, I'd never considered it for using as an aquarium stand. I've been considering a marine tank at some point so at least I'll have access to those materials. That's a turn up for the books! lol
It’s great stuff!!
The process you described is exactly the same with framingtech.com where I got my stand. They drew it up, did weight analysis, then changed members then I changed leg placement and height, they re analised the whole thing and once the number met the safety factor they quoted me for it and 2 weeks later from my approval it was in my driveway. I built it 84" 212 cm long, 32" 81cm wide and 46"116cm tall for extra sump clearance. The whole thing is built from 45x45 and 45x90 profiles. I understand shipping from US would have cost some penny but my stand was fraction of what you paid. I urge those in the US to get a quote from FramingTech and not get scared by the numbers here.
100% agree! FramingTech look amazing and if I was anywhere remotely near America, it is where I would have gone. They use high quality profiles and fittings and have excellent customer service. Just doesn't make sense to ship it from the other side of the globe to Australia (especially with freight charges at the moment!)
12:05 I want to see how to build step by step, how the connector aplied etc, but I dont get it except those speech
Yeah fair enough
what goes on top of the stand before you place the aquarium?
Acrylic sheet, then polystyrene
@@ParkersReef i guess the acrylic doesnt bow because the tank is glass and all the pressure is taken by the edges?
How do you have a reef tank with carpet
hahaha yeah, it wasn't ideal. Hence why the new tank will go in after the new floorboards go down :)
Through this whole video I was thinking it’ll be good to upgrade my stand just to future proof, then you hit me right in the face with the price 😂.
Hahahahaha sorry mate. You can do it cheaper, I really went over bored with the profile which newer doubled the price
Looking awsome! Any reason you went from 8’ to 7’ ?
yeah the 8 wouldn't fit the room all that well. Compromise had to be made, but was worth it in the scheme of things
Parkers Reef fair enough, can’t wait to see the system progress, are you keeping your foxface I know you love him?
Really nice stand Sam! Which connectors did you end up using? Also, consider thick, coloured acrylic to wrap the stand (easily machined, mounted and waterproof!) that's what I plan on going with for a modern look.
Oooooh good thinking! Got any more details on it?
I used a combo of stainless standard connectors and universal connectors.
@@ParkersReef As far as my thinking on the acrylic panels goes. I plan to drill holes in the back of the panels without drilling right through and use those holes to mount brackets to hold a dowel rod or pvc pipe which can be guided into slanted hooks mounted on the stand frame, so the panels can lift on and off.
Good thinking
If you want a basic drawing of the idea I can tag you on reef2reef. my username there is GBRsouth.

Hello there. I really want a hobby aquarium. My aquarium will consist of two tanks. I am thinking of putting a 55 ”x 20” x20 ”aquarium on the first and second floors. I will put a resting tank at the top. I was thinking of wood and iron profiles as a coffee table. But while I was doing research on the internet, I saw the post. And why I wanted it with t slot (sigma profile). But I have no idea about that. Dad, help me with a design, please. What kind of a coffee table should I design?
I think your best option would be to reach out to a local engineering place that works with extrusions. They’ll be able to design something to your specs that can support the weight of the tank 👍🏻
How tall is the stand?

when watching this video and seeing you will spend well over $4000 on just a stand i thought well parkers lost the plot,,,, but then i glanced over at one of my 30L nanos and see $3000 worth of stock and realise I am the one who has lost the plot.
Hahahahaha we’ve all lost the plot mate!!!
I love extruded aluminum, but i hate this idea. The reason being the mode of failure for these members and fasteners. So, the metals can still corrode, specially in a marine environment. Major members are not redundant, and when it fails, it's going to be a total loss. Pressure Treated lumber would have been 10% of the price, and far more reliable.
Having had treated lumber stands in the past, I can say for sure they are not more reliable. A fraction of the price yes, not sure about 10% though….
It’s also important to design the stand so that the weight is not supported by the fasteners, but by the upright beams - like this is.
But hey, is all good, we’re all different! Got any info on your reef tank?
@@ParkersReef All other things being equal, if you have a leak that is going to call into question of failure for BOTH 80/20, and PT Lumber you have to look at the mode of failure. If PT Fails, What's it look like? Well, lumber gets soft and compresses and slowly things end up sagging... It's isn't an sudden failure. With the 80/20 and a key member's fixtures are corroding and it fails, you end up with a catastrophic failure and a total loss your frags are rolling around on your floor. That's not going to happen with PT. SURE, the 80/20 looks cool, and you can claim your cooler then the other guys, but seems like a foolish risk to me.
That's without even getting into the electrolysis risks.
Seems stupid... "Look I made a flag pole of Solid Gold!!!"
I love 80/20 for projects, but there's like 2 things I wouldn't use it for, one of them being an Aquarium.
@@surveysays8335 Fair enough. Having had multiple lumber stands before, I will respectfully disagree with you :)
Lumber goes soft without spills. Just the moisture alone causes it to fail after a few years.
That is the reason I shut down my last tank, the stand was not looking too safe.
But as said above, respectively just one opinion (Y)

hahaha yeah mate.... I chewed over that invoice for quite some time. But hey, I'll forgot the cost at some (distant) point but that stand will live forever :)
Nice but totally overbuilt. A single 90x90mm extrusion can span 8ft without needing any support. I know because i built two 16ft systems using this stuff.
Overbuilt is not a bad thing :)
@@ParkersReef Depends on how you look at it. Those supports limit access under the stand and you could have used the money you saved on something else.
I do not advise using aluminum
