Tamiya Lancia TT-02 VS XV-01 Speed Test + Handling Test Run

  • Rob and I decided to do a few tests with our Tamiya Lancia Delta Integrale rally cars - a top speed run followed by other handling tests:
    Acceleraton comparison
    180 degree turn at full speed, and full steering lock
    Suspension test on a rough gravel path
    Turning circle test (how tight they will turn on full-lock)
    The cars are standard, except the TT-02 has a full metal bearing upgrade, which have affected the top speed run slightly.
    The tests are very short, but the results verify what we have found during extensive runs together, and I think they are very representative of each car's performance.
    Both cars are running on 7.2v NiMh batteries.
    Feel free to comment about your ideas/feelings of this little test!
    Thanks for watching and I hope to see you soon!
    Many thanks to Rob Brennan, my lifelong friend, for his involvement and support with this video! Visit his excellent channel here:

    What an excellent format! I have watched this and watched many other test/reviews and nothing is as illuminating and clear as the way you filmed and presented this! I seriously think that format should be a regular feature when people test cars. The turning tests, the suspension test, the turning circle test and even a straight forward speed test reveals so much about each chassis. Made it so easy for newbies to understand the different capabilities of different chassis! Thanks. Wonderful test!

      Thank you very much, superchargerone! That is fantastic feedback and very nice to hear! I am really pleased you liked the format. I was really trying to show the differences between the 2 chassis, so people can decide if they think the XV-01 is worth twice the price of a TT-02. They are both great cars, but you definitely get what you pay for. But then, with a few carefully selected hop-ups, the TT-02 can perform so much better than stock, and still come in a well under the price of a XV-01. Many thanks again, I appreciate your comment very much. :-)

I will make a run video of the XV-01 vs TT-02 Type-S when I get the chance, I think that will be much closer! Thanks again and I hope you have a great weekend coming up! :-)

    I’ve just watch all the videos you made comparing the two. Brilliant and very helpful. I was tempted with the XV01 due to a different chassis to build but the cost put me off - seeing how much better it is in stock form (and quieter) has made me decide to get the XV01. Thank you.

    Absolutely amazing video. Such a good job. Very interesting. I must say that I would love to have them both ☺️ (Apart from the friction shocks ... I’m sure Rob will fix that now when the stock tests are over). But great test. Yeah, I don’t mind oversteer as long as it doesn’t spin around. Oversteer is half the fun ☺️ Ohhh, but that dreaded understeer... I was surprised at the TT-02’s top speed (many many thanks for converting it into kph), but maybe it’s the same spur and pinion as the TT-02B. That would make sense, the buggy going a little faster because of the bigger wheel-gearing. But the speed and acceleration is not bad for off roading. Hmmm. Now I want a TT-02 and an XV-01 even more. Great video.

    • @robbrennanrc
      @robbrennanrc 5 лет назад +3

      Hi Mikael. Shocks now changed. As for the gears, the spur is 70T and the pinion is 19T steel (surprising, a steel pinion stock from Tamiya). I must admit I was the same until filming Mark build his XV and the sore and blistered fingers he ended up with.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  5 лет назад +1

      I am so pleased with your comment, Mikael! Glad you want one of each - Rob and I are lucky in that we can swap and drive each others cars! Both are a real blast to drive, even at these relatively low speeds, that's Tamiya for you! I think some of the TT-02's understeer is exaggerated by the more limited steering lock, and the loss of grip due to the bouncy suspension. But all this is about to change as you may have seen by Rob's comment. He plans to upgrade the TT and we will have some more little tests. Even with quite a few goodies thrown at the TT, it should still cost less than the XV - I think that will be even more interesting. Thanks for watching and for leaving a fantastic comment! :-)

      Hi - we haven't run the TT-01 yet, so not sure if we need to mod it - but I would guess the easiest mod would be to change the bushings to metal bearings and change the steering arms to adjustable turnbuckles so you can adjust the toe-in or toe-out. :)

      Welcome, Nikos! Thank you for the supportive words, much appreciated. Great choice of car, I must say. If you are using the stock motor, I don't think you will have any problems with overheating, especially with a heatsink fitted. I run mine without one and it never gets too hot. The motor is located at the front outside of the chassis which helps a lot to keep it cool. Enjoy the build of you new car! Best wishes from England! :)

    Hi Mark. Very interesting and useful comparison of these kits. I think that the friction shocks have a lot to answer for and should be banned in all Tamiya kits apart from maybe the lunchbox! My TT-02 rally car started life as a drift spec chassis so it had the oil shocks and also they gave you the sticky AW grease for the diffs. The result was a nice amount of oversteer and good handling on most surfaces. The only problem I had with it really was that gravel could get in the steering gubbins and also it did tend to fill up with grass and stuff. Be interesting to see what you guys upgrade on your cars and what difference it makes. I think eventually I'd like to have both of them for myself to play with. Don't think I've told you my latest plan which is to convert most of my garage into a hobby room. I think it will be better in the long run but will be a while until I get it sorted. My wife is using the room that was my hobby room for her studies now so I do need to pull my finger out in the garage conversion! Meanwhile still much to do in the house but we are back living upstairs now which is great. I will hopefully find time to do some kit building this weekend. Are you up to much mate?

      @MarkBryanRC  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Pete - great to hear you are getting back on your feet, it has been quite a long haul for you! Good luck with the garage, sounds like a good solution...
      Glad you liked the tests, as I have already commented, not very scientific - but hey, it's just a hobby and at least it shows a rough idea of the differences. Both cars are ace, and with a few changes they will become awesome! Heard a lot of good things about AW grease in the diffs, must try that! Definitely need a bit of oversteer, makes the car more fun too!
      We took the cars on a gravel track last week, and as you say - both cars had locked up steering every couple of minutes as gravel got in - but the XV was the worst affected! Those mudguards on the chassis are a waste of space!

      These belts are pretty tough. The belts in my XV-01 and TRF503 has no issues. As for the diff gears in my TT02? Well, there's a reason why they have been replaced by metal gears. The TT02 diff gears are horribly bad when you run on anything but pavement with a bone stock 27t motor.
