I feel like college has this problem. For about two years I didn't know what I wanted to major in because you can literally become anything you want.

@@rasoolGawany hey, i had this problem too, i should have watched the job market: do type your primary engineering role in generic job search engines, and look for a middle way in income and number of opportunities! The markets change fast, so i wouldn't suggest to try to learn for life, learn what you can begin with and then you will always have to pivot your entire career but at least you'll have the cash to do it of.

Not a problem for the college! Change majors every other year for a decade maximizes their revenue! The problem they have is indecisive kids picking other colleges. To narrow the choice they encourage parents to send them to the same one they attended.

Funny, I just studied this "Jam study" in class for a marketing class. They overcame this paradox of choice or "Overchoice phenomenon" by testing how assortment type (alignable vs nonalignable) affected market share as choices increased. When attributes are alignable, consumers choose more, and when they're nonalignable, consumers choose less because of cognitive effort and potential regret!

I like this. I noticed this about myself when I chose to make a schedule for my day. Without one I would just do whatever was on my plate that day if anything, but as soon as I had a couple things I needed done paralysis and second guessing set in. I either nervously did the one that came to my mind first all the while I would be panicking if I would get it done or not or I would get so stressed out I would just freeze and did nothing instead. Its pretty silly now that I look back on it but its amazing how different my life is now because I chose to write out what I needed to do and now I can choose my schedule and day rather than just react to it. I don't get overwhelmed anymore and if I have way too much to do I don't feel guilty about saying so because I know their really is NO MORE TIME. Thanks for the video I enjoyed it.

    Nice video again !
About the choices, it is clearly time lost some time, but it also put your "decision energy of the day" a bit down. Every little choice do this. So simply by preparing your meals the day before, and your clothes, so you can wake up and be ready for more important decisions, you can get: more time + more decision power through the day.

  • @fatephantom4781

So the paralysis that's cause by the "paradox of choice," can be avoided once you decide to make a single choice. You develope the choice into a habit, which makes the decision making a lot easier the next time you need to make the same choice, you don't need to spend hours thinking about what choice you're going to make. If only you accept your freedom and just chose. Thank you! Learned a lot.

Reminds me of a concept presented in the "ZEN of presentation" book, that a good presentation filters the information tailored to the needs of the audience instead of just spilling everything and anything generic on every audience of any type. Also as a computer engineer who is often being asked by friends and relatives, what configuration they should buy, i long suspected it has been the core of Apple's success, that they offer only so many choices that an average non-professional person can understand! Which not just btw. also makes them more capable of writing a rather stable operating system, because it doesn't have to fit all the millions of hardware combinations the PC market offers...

To find the criteria I don't even need to look at the products, I just ask myself what I want or need. Hope this helps.

The "choice paralysis" can be minimized if you use a hierarchy. For example with your reading list - divide books into few categories and in each category place a few books. You can also create subcategories.
This way you could recommend more books in a convenient way.
