The passenger def had some knowledge but still this was impressive wow. He also kept calm and never panicked. Could never be me
Even in the face of immanent death Star Fleet officers never panic. They keep calm and do their jobs.
Also, the controller saying how many "personnel" do you have onboard instead of "souls" was an inspired choice in the moment. You have to get the info but you don't want to freak the guy out.😅
Lólîl8
Yeah even to just know to "dump" there's no way he had never encountered airplane controls anymore. Still pretty miraculous when you consider there are captains with 20,000 hours of experience who don't successfully recover a plane and land it, though.
My toxic trait is thinking that I can also land a plane without any knowledge 😂( I know I'll mess up XD)
This has been discussed on pilot forums since it happened. The passenger who landed the plane was a friend of the incapacitated pilot and had flown in the right seat many times and had operated the plane. He didn't have a pilot's license but this was no beginner as you can tell by the ATC comms.
Yeah this thing has been widely debunked. The dude flew a perfect approach with a perfect touchdown. The part they don't talk about is that while he was on final, he wasn't even talking to the tower controller who could see him and help him down, he was still talking to the approach controller who couldn't see him. The whole thing is a complete BS. That kind of touchdown in a heavy turboprop is not possible unless you have hundreds of landings in it.
Interesting. But still , he did a great job. Just prepare for idiots to reply thinking you are insulting him
@@alk672 A couple questions because I'm not sure I understand what you're implying. First, am I to understand that you believe this incident was staged, i.e. the "passenger" is actually an experienced pilot who has simply claimed he was not? If this is what you are claiming, then certainly we can obtain records of his pilot's license and training, and thus prove that theory. Has this been done? Second, if you are not claiming that the incident was staged, then what is it that you are claiming has been "debunked"? i.e. what statement in this video is not factual? The only statement I can see that may be in question is the "no flying experience" statement. However, this video does not make that claim on its own, that is what the ATC controller said on frequency. Perhaps he was not correct, but what is the concrete evidence that makes that incorrect? Do we have "Darren's" pilot's license, training records, or logbook? I personally cannot subscribe to the theory that the passenger MUST be an experienced pilot solely based on the fact that the landing was successful. I'm going to need more evidence than that. Perhaps he just got extremely lucky. After all, even a broken watch is correct twice a day.
Thanks for clarifying! I was wondering about the 'no experience' part. If the passenger had been me, who just enjoys this channel's videos and airport streams, I would have literally zero idea how to level the wings, how to prevent the plane from rolling over, how to turn it or slow it down, where the transponder is, how to tell my descent rate, or how (and where) to input heading and frequency changes. The only things I'd be able to do as a passenger would be readback for ATC, and just maybe, pulling the nose up. I'd totally end up among the sharks :/
@@alk672 absolutely not, never landed a plane in his life. check out Blancolirio interview
As a med student… like whaaat, forget that landing… he survived an aortic dissection while unnatended. Dammm
I'm not a med student or MD, just a social worker who's worked in the medical field for umpteen years, but that was my exact response, too! As soon as it popped up on the screen, my reaction was actually "Holy sh#t! That guy should be dead." While in absolutely no way am I discounting what the passengers were able to do, the odds of him surviving would be less than the odds of them being able to land the plane!
That is indeed impressive!! Good grief…. That is usually a “ Call the dogs off, the hunts over “ type of emergency!!
Well he survived because of Darren’s coolness under immense pressure.
Yeah he did!
Now imagine "A passenger with neither flying nor medical training perform a life saving surgery to incapacitated pilot who just had an aortic dissection, while piloting the airplane to a safe landing!" wouldn't that be even more impressive feat?
Holy SH*T! The pilot survived an aortic dissection? I didn't know such a thing was survivable, even if only 2 of 3 layers separated. LUCKY THREESOME, ALL AROUND!
Normally, I wouldn't call a guy who has an aortic dissection while flying a plane lucky, but I guess in this case an incredible amount of bad luck was balanced out by an equal amount of good luck 🙂
Most ppl die from that. Bostin Loyd, young bodybuilder, he died at 30 from that same thing. Aortic dissection.
You can't kill a Florida-Man.
What is even more impressive but not mentioned in the video is that the passenger even without any medical experience was able to communicate his own diagnosis of what was wrong with the pilot to the medical staff on the ground, in this case, an aortic dissection, saving the doctors precious seconds and saving his life.
Great job by Darren. He must have been under some the worst situational stress of his life. Another FlightChannel gem! Kudos!!
Panic can be the biggest killer but these two guys worked as a team through a harrowing experience. They will succeed in any corporate venture.
I’m near tears, all heros. So happy the pilot recovered, amazing passenger & his fellow passenger “assistant “ helping him thru it.
Pilot was very lucky! And a great job by the passengers and ATC!
Oh my goodness. I can't even imagine what was going through Darren's mind as he was flying that plane. Props to him for remaining as calm, cool, and collected as possible. I would have been an absolute nervous wreck. I am so grateful that the pilot survived the life-threatening medical episode. The most calming and relieving part was when the American Airlines flight crew and the ATC congratulated the passengers for the safe landing. Very scary that this happened, but beyond elated that there was a happy ending.
It's truly incredible how dedicated and thorough you are with your channel. Absolutely love every video of yours ❤️
Agreed! I also just subbed to your channel Adriana.
@@TheDucatiPilot ❤️🙏🏻
@Adriana Luptak . . . he departed the plane from the wrong airport! Let alone, the wrong country!!
Thanks, what a story those guys will have to tell to their mates.
Glad the pilot survived, but guess his flying days are over.
Well done ATC, and all others who coached the passengers to land safely and save the Pilots life.
I started crying when they landed! This channel always brings my emotions to a head. So happy they're okay!
This is my cousin and he had no hands on experience. He has flown many times on small planes and landed this plane safely by the grace of God and by paying attention on previous flights. He had to do what any of us would have done when the only other choice is death. I only hope I stayed as calm as him if I had been in his flip flops or in his case bare feet. It just so happened the other person on board was a friend of the pilots that often went with his friend to keep him company. Darren had no experience flying a plane and we are all thankful for the way this turned out.
Nice, nice job TFC of covering this. And obviously a great job by the passenger no matter what experience he had prior.
As always, night or day, I rush right to your videos. The reason YT was made in the first place. Brilliant, Flight Channel, just brilliant.
I’m amazed, with an aortic dissection, the pilot survived. From the passengers to the medical personnel, everyone did a great job.
*_"A few minutes later, the plane touches down safely"_* UN - FRIGGIN - BELIEVABLE!!!! WOW! Just WOW!!!! Grandchildren memories MADE!
A few mistakes I've noticed here is that the transponder code was read back as 7000 and noone corrected it.
The controller also read back the IDENT spelling as I N D E N T.
Almost as if ATC was more stressed out than the guy flying the plane.
@@enigmawyoming5201 yeah..I kinda picked up on that.
@Joe Pace I noticed those gaffes, too. Pedants unite!
😜
Wow! Amazing...
Great outcome! Great job by the passenger landing and pure professionalism on the part of our ATC guys!
Wow! You should have titled this one “Plane of Miracles”. From the passenger landing the plane to the pilot surviving a very serious medical condition. The Big Guy was looking out for them that day for sure.
YUP
Hats off to Darren. Incredible, and a perfectly executed landing too. So smooth, and so calm while speaking to ATC. I’m off on a flight tomorrow to Chicago O’hare. Very excited for it.
Great content as per flight channel, amazing detail.
This was touted as zero experience. There’s NO way this “passenger” didn’t know at least something about flying. The way he knew about transponders and frequency changes is not a zero experience passenger.
Yeah...
My ex, although in broadcasting all his life, could've done it. He did flight sims, loved planes and flight (as do I), and was familiar with the terminology. No experience in actual flying, but he kept a cool head and could follow instructions. I'd rather have a pilot, but he would've done the job in a pinch. Dire circumstances gives us supernatural abilities when lives are on the line. Those who doubt themselves usually fail.
Agreed 100%
Ted Stryker’s problems were surprisingly realistic as well. He did fly in the war, but he still needed help landing. However, his flying experience made him the most likely one to be able to fly and land the plane .
@@angelbulldog4934 i play flight sims too but the thing is that he was likely familiarized with this plane's cockpit.
I know where the transponder is in the 737 but have no idea where in this plane
"Hardware failure between control column and chair"
Good thing they had a spare onboard
Pretty astounding, regardless of how many times this guy had flown with the pilot.
No words, except I'm glad they all made it.
what a situation. Those guys in the plane must get a pilot licence.
They're gonna need more training before they can get a pilot license
@@JH-Carbon of course. Those guys born to fly.
Guessing he had at least a bit of experience on microsoft flight simulator based on how he responded
no need
An honorary pilots license, a plaque, give him something. That’s a one in a million chance to land that airplane.
How relaxed the passenger sounded, that was cool! :)
Thank god he had experience even tho he didn't have a ticket. He had paid attention when he was flying as a pax and had some confidence. He knew the lingo " passing through 7,000" etc. Great job and a excellent outcome for all!
I remember hearing about this incident on another video, respect how he landed the plane, despite the pilot being incapacitated.
@Stevi Robinson you would since you replied
Big big Hug to guy who save many people,You did your very best, May God bless you and your family.
Always good to have a happy-ending story with brave, calm and smart people like Darren involved to make it so - thanks TFC!
“Florida man lands plane when pilot becomes incapacitated”
Finally a good headline for a Florida man!
You must not be reading the same newspapers as me. There are a lot of great men in Florida! Sheesh!

Getting out of that plane, I would have kissed the ground. I'm in tears right now. What an amazing outcome
I feel like kissing the ground whenever I get back on the ground, even after a perfect flight.
Amazing!! Whether he flew in a plane next to a pilot or not, it's not the same thing as being a pilot. This guy is a hero! He didn't even know how to turn his equipment on. This is a truly great story!
That was inspiring! 'Speeding up to stop' was always my hardest thing. That kid did a great job considering he'd never flown before. Good on you mate!!!
Now this is the kind of story I like. Amazing job Darren! I you are reading this. What a guy!
Best I've seen in quite a while. The ending with the music was special and emotional. Thanks for this.
this is absolutely the best of all of the video's you've created!!!! Thank you so much!
Fun fact: Darren doesn't even know how to drive a car and even a bike, but has managed to pilot a plane on the spot.
Is it really true-?
Please no joke here... Darren did a very good job in saving everyone on board.
I’m not even impressed with how great of a job Darren did with immediately jumping into action and saving everyone. What an incredible landing.
It was such an incredible story to hear. Darren did such an excellent job landing the plane safely and he saved his Captain's life.
Wow, this is simply amazing. After watching so many of these about crashes and deaths, it's great to see such an inspiring survival story. I am a huge fan of this channel for the detail and animations included in their videos. Keep up the good work!
Grace under fire, for sure. Thanks for yet another top notch, professional quality video.
Thank you Pilot Allec Ibay for another wonderful video. Happy to know "Everyone survived "
Yes, would love an interview of the passenger that saved everyone by flying that plane!! Def needs to be recognized! Ty great video great ending!!
Nerves of steel...what an amazing outcome for all involved....
Cool to see a video about something that happened so recently!
Darren must watch a lot of Flight Channel videos to be so knowledgeable! What a fantastic and uplifting story!
fast becoming my favorite channel ...
annnnnnnd, one of the few no drama, professionally produced watches ✈️
That was awesome!
‘Darren’ deserves an award of some kind.
Beautiful job, sir. One of your best!
I used to regularly catch a 208 Caravan from Cooktown to Cairns some years ago. Great aircraft. Marsh Harbour would be a smaller airport than Cooktown. The nice part about the caravan is that most passengers got a good view of the Great Barrier Reef as they flew between CTN and CNS.
Thanks for posting this, that was great story.👍🙏
Awesome story-telling! Thanks for another great video.
It's great that you told us all about the pilot but how about a pic and follow up on the true hero that landed the plane?
I'm guessing he is a drug smuggling pilot that didn't let anyone take his photo. Same reason why he didn't use his cell, they would then have his phone number
😳
@mryfrank14 You've watched Tom Cruise's movie recently? lol
@@gimacedo - the one where he worked for the CIA while running drugs and they made him take photos of the drug dealers and they killed him?
Saw that awhile ago but yes, he would be that type of a guy.
He has to deny he is pilot because he doesn't want you to know he works for the CIA and drug dealers
@@MrYfrank14 There are photos of him online. His name is Darren Harrison, and he participated in a Today Show segment about the incident. He's the vice president of a flooring company.
Again Another Awesome Episode Thank You Flight Channel 💞💖🇺🇸🙏😇👍
This entire channel is amazing!!!
Darren is so calm given his total inexperience with flying aircraft, has potential to be a real pilot one day. Pilot surviving an aortic dissection for that long is impressive given the high mortality rate.
This is an awesome story! They did great!! Thank you for a great presentation!!
Darren had to be a pilot, even if it meant playing Flight Simulator or messing with paper planes in a previous life. A normal passenger couldn't do so much without first watching an actual pilot for a few minutes.
@Spicy_FPV
It could be true however that if you were playing with flight simulator games you might have a pretty good idea of how to read and operate many controls sufficiently.
Man I gave a round of applause for this Florida man who landed the C208 Caravan safely, and I do think that he might get his pilot license soon :)
Darren is an absolute hero! Wish they could've interviewed him afterwards. It would've been a privilege to hear his account!
Wow! Truly remarkable. I'm so relieved everyone survived. Hero passenger-pilot! 💜✈
I’m amazed! I’m a pilot who hates these heavy Cessnas. Amazing job hero! 👏👏👏
Wow! Perhaps the best video on your channel to date. ( in my opinion ) A nice deviation from the norm. Thank you for that!!!
Best???? Wow, you must be a novice. The departure airport was incorrect. Not even the same country!!!
@@nicholasflores288 like I said "IN MY OPINION"
. . but you're defending you're opinion over something that is proven to be incorrect . . . ?
I almost burst into tears when they landed safely Well done these guys.
Thanks for this video! Incredible story
Great video I remember hearing this on the news.
Oh I love it when everyone survives!
The guy knew how to fly planes . He was no newbie .
Very good, exciting and thorough presentation.
I've watched enuf of these videos to imagine I'd be able to do this, but when I think about the stress and real time pressure, I'm not so sure ! Well done that man.
This was amazing. They are lucky things went well when so much could have gone so wrong! So glad all three made 8t back safely.
Stellar work on everybody's part.
Respect to the passenger 🙏.... Its appreciable that he did not panick and bravely saved the lives onboard the plane
It pays off to watch and learn how the pilot is flying the plane as a passenger
What a calm hero very brave excellent job
Hats off to you Darren!!
Superb graphics. Nice job all around.
The dude who landed a plane must receive some sorta bravery award HATS IF TO That man
I heard about this on the news and never expected to see it on "The Flight Channel so soon.
I put myself in Darren's shoes, and I can't imagine all that was going through his mind when he had to fly the plane alone.
Miraculous landing and I'm thankful the pilot didn't die and was saved by the doctors.
I believe everything happens for a reason, and after Darren and the other passenger experienced this, I can bet their lives changed. Angels are watching over them. 👼✝
Great job, passenger! Fortunately you had absorbed some flying experience by watching your pilot friend. Someone with absolutely no experience would have piled that bird up.
That guy should be given free training for his pilot's license if he wants it.
Srsly true, absolutely
Had been waiting for this
Kudos to that passenger!!
Saw first on VATSIM channel... (For the ones wondering, the VATSIM channel has a more complete set of transmissions)
It's awesome to watch here replicated on TheFlightChannel!
And more information on the outcome which is really good!
What a teamwork!
My word, The Fates were smiling on all of those fellas, that's for damn sure!
It's Sink or Swim and they chose and made it happen. Quite a predicament. BRAVO to Darren.
The passenger was not a beginner at all. He had flown in the right seat of that plane and operated it many times.
Well that was intense!! I'm glad the pilot lived as it sounded like he had a massive heart attack.
Truly amazing! The passengers did a fantastic job!
Kind of reminds me of Ted Stryker in Airplane.
Rumack: "I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you."
@@lunayoshi Bill Murray uses this line to the pilots every time he can boarding the plane. :)
I feel like TFC is trying a new style of recording. Usually, in his past videos, he uses cinematic shots of the aircraft. In this one, I feel like 3rd person camera was used. I honestly like it!
Wow, several miracles! Congratulations to the passenger and the pilot!
Well done. I remember this when it came out in the news and it's still amazing the cool the passenger had. That fellow got it done.
This video shows how important it is to remain calm in an emergency. I doubt I could have been as calm in that circumstance as the passenger who landed the plane. It's wonderful to see that all turned out well for everyone. I liked the compliment given by the pilot of the American Airlines who was holding his plane before takeoff.
God bless everyone involved. So glad they landed safely.
What a miracle that pilot survived that story sure had a happy ending to it
Its amazing thank God for safe landing congrats you have done well
