A big thanks to everyone who helped me with this video! You know who you are :-). Also a big thanks to my wonderful children Hailey and Zach.
ResMed has programmed into their devices deceptive messages that show up after the motor reaches a certain number of hours.
The message reads "Motor life exceeded - Contact service". So i contacted ResMed 'service' regarding the message. They informed me that i would need to buy a new motor which was $900 but for that price i should really just upgrade and buy a new machine.
When i told them that the machine was still working perfectly fine they responded with "it could fail at anytime". I know many people that have had many many more years of use after receiving this message so if one pops up on your CPAP machine, keep using it! It's totally fine.
I actually wouldn't have too much of an issue with this message if it was presented in a way that was transparent & ethical. The machine is not broken, it does not need a new motor and they should not be scaring you into buying a new device.
I hope you enjoyed the video. Please consider subscribing to the channel and sharing the video on your social media platforms.

My machine has actually stopped working within 2 weeks of the message showing up. My now not working, ResMed 10 is 3 years old.

My S9 had been giving the "....contact service provider" message for some time before its motor finally stopped working. Whenever the power is turned on now the screen lights up displaying RESMED & then goes dark before repeating the cycle endlessly until the machine is shut off. It appears that it's trying to start up and failing. Is this what happens when the motor has expired?

OMG I've been getting that message for months and it did really scare me. I think its horrendous that these companies use scare tactics like this. No wonder people are becoming so untrusting (BTW I Just received the Mini today) I thought at any minute my AirSence 10 would stop and I would be in a heck of a mess since I supposedly have severe OSP, 1min58sec!! Thank God your channel popped up when I was searching info on the mini. I didn't even know how to find these settings.
My AHI for 1 year is 1.6 an leaks 17..so looks pretty good since you said AHI under 4 and leaks under 24 I believe. Please correct me if I am wrong. But anyways my anxiety has subsided. Thanks so much and your kids are adorable!! 😁 Looking into a membership.

I started using my A9 in September of 2015. Here it is, September of 2021, it started showing that message about three or four months back. I didn't figure it was a big deal. I've had power outages, and wake up whenever it stops running.

Thanks so much for the info! I sadly replaced my Resmed S9 with a Philips Dreamstation two years ago when the S9 displayed the "message of doom". Now I can unpack my old ResMed and feel much more secure using it until my new Airsense 10 clears backorder. Should have learned my lesson back in the day when the tank of my old Philips Remstar leaked all over my nightstand.

I never got the message about the motor, but it started making noises, probably the motor bearing. Your help saved me a great deal of money and now I can repair it again with confidence.

Thanks for the video. Just home from hospital for emergency surgery. First night, my Airsense 10 auto gives me the motor life message. Big panic! Crossed my fingers and used it. No problems. 2nd night, no problem. Dr’s office refused to issue me a new script for a replacement machine without an appointment. First opening …..3 months out. Would not make an exception . California Respiratory Therapist Here,
The cost of a motor for a device is usually anywhere from 200 to about 400 depending on parts swapped out . But in most area Resmed do not have parts for S9 units anymore for repairs for the past year now probably because they were planning to come out with the S11 which is not out yet in the USA.
    Love the videos

I just happened unto your site in the middle of the night. Couldn't sleep. What a coincidence! Almost the same thing happened to me. For a couple of years I ordered a replacement water tank and my request was ignored by my supplier, with no explanation. That's ok. I managed to clean it with plenty of dish liquid, baking soda and lots of shaking. Then I noticed the little plastic tube that connects my oxygen to the machine is cracked in several places. So I called them up and requested a new connector pipe. It took a while and a couple of call backs but finally the customer rep. told me they don't make the tube anymore because my machine is not made anymore. Wow, I was surprised because it is still running well.
Anyway I can't have a replacement water tank or a replacement connector tube. Well, I very carefully wrapped the tube with duct tape and I think the leaks are pretty well covered. So I'm back in business! The doctor doesn't seem to be interested. He said to get me new equipment he has to do a sleep study and he wasn't able to do that right now . Did you notice, the medical profession seems to be changing somehow. You probably don't know about this because you are not in the US. Thanks for reading this. Three cheers for good old duct tape!

Was diagnosed with OSA back in early 2007. Got a Resmed Tango which of course is no longer made. Still on the same machine so, in about 2 months I'll cross 50,000 hours. I took it in and had them check the pressure against the settings when it hit 14 yrs old and it was spot-on. Although I might have just gotten an exceptional machine (which has never told me the motor is past its useful life) or these CPAPs generally have a longer life than the manufacturer will admit.

I have totally lived this experience. My S8 is still running after 13 years, but several S9s have "expired", only their messages were not about motor life, but about leaks in the hose or mask (and no matter how many brand-new hoses or masks, they would not solve it).
Honestly, I was hoping you'd tell of some magic combination of button pushing that would net me a few thousand more hours. I keep my S8 around because it's old reliable and I go back to it in between finding replacement machines, usually inherited from others who've moved on.
And I have learned to disassemble S9s (a nightmare) and S10s (a breeze) and clean them. I have learned to repair the funny buttons on the S8 which stop making contact over time (but it's easy to fix).

I got the air 10 10yrs ago & my Sis got one sometime after I got mine & she got that service message before me, her insurance replaced it. My Dad & Bro then got one. Both of their blower motors are making horrible noise & hasn’t brought up the service message yet. I noticed the service message came on mine 2yrs ago & still working fine. Our medical provider wants to get them into new machines & won’t replace the blower motors. I found a video how to replace the motors & I can get a new motor for $90. It really is a scam & the whole medical industry is a scam because it’s a life or death situation that they raise prices like crazy.

The recall was due to the foam cushion around the motor degrading over time and coming apart inside the machines. They use the foam inside to make it quieter. People have had respiratory issues here in the US thats why there is a class action lawsuit against phillips respironics. Doctors recommend putting a inline filter on the hose before your mask connection.

I went in with $1200 to buy my first machine, not knowing anything about them. And the sales assistant wouldnt be drawn into a conversation about purchase. She would only talk about the $3000 contract to rent. I tried and tried and tried, and in the end I signed the contract. Then I found out I had to pay several hundred dollars extra every six months year for extra stuff I didnt want - like 6 bottles of cleaning detergent every 6 months that I could have purchased for a 10th of the price at the dollar store. Made complaints - never heard back despite several complaints.

Just found your site because I was getting this message. Not sure if you are familiar with Hewlett Packard Printers but years ago when they had the LasetJet II and IIIs they actually put forth a memo of Planned Obsolescence. This memo was leaked and a series of crappy LaserJet 4's and 5's were exposed. Their timeline preference . . . . 2 years. I never believed this message and really never researched the device much until I started receiving emails prior to even searching for a new motor. I was told only my Dr would have access to my data but this is clearly not the case. Thanks for your efforts. The information you've been providing is invaluable.

There's got to be a method of resetting the counter for that motor since they have designed it to be replaced. I work on industrial printers which will occasionally come up with similar cryptic messages like "Replace 3, call your dealer". These are preventive maintenance type items, but we will give the instructions to reset them when asked. I have the clinician's manual for the Airsense 10, but it does not include that service information.

The circle lasted for a little over an hour and I was told that the only way to resolve the problem was to drive around 25 miles one way for someone to tell me my humidifier is not heating. I use it every night and I can tell! 😅. So now I will make the 50 mile round trip not knowing what they plan to do. The Airsense 10 is about 18 months old. What a policy!

As someone who travels, I have had two “on the road” bad experiences with my COAP. In the first, the airline I was on destroyed my luggage by dragging it across the tarmac, and my CPAP was DOA. I have to admit the airline does not recommend putting it in checked baggage. They paid for a replacement but I had to sleep in a chair all night for several nights since there was no medical supplier in the area who would rent me a machine for a short term. The second time was when while visiting China, my CPAP which I now carried with me as one of my allowable personal items, quit on me during sleeping. Of course it was under warranty, but alas, I couldn’t find anyone in the area to repair it or rent me a used one for a few days. Again, I slept upright, fitfully in a chair until I returned home.

FWIW, a CPAP machine doesn't count against your personal items. It's a medical device, not a personal item. I fly often and have my carry-on luggage, laptop bag and CPAP.

Fun stuff. I taught business ethics and law for years, but I also taught financial management (with its goal of shareholder wealth maximization, which is a great goal, with its greatest offender being executive salaries and perks). Nevertheless, the pressure on these overpaid and overly “bonus” compensated is immense. Then companies end up wondering why their executives have engaged in embarrassing, brand-damaging unethical practices. For example, just this one exposure has etched in my brain: NO RESMED! :)

I bought a new Resmed 10 today with new head gear and mask which set me back $1290.00 which is a lot but I can claim some back from my private health care provider. If it lasts another 10 years I’ll be happy.

I'm sure there's some CYA in those messages but the bearings will have a definite lifespan on them. Additionally dust will build up in the machines and contribute to the wear on the bearings depending on your environment. The CYA factor probably makes it a bit preemptive. But yeah, I'd keep my old S9 if I could take out 3-4 screws and pop in a new motor at 8 years for 50-100$. Thanks for the good visuals on it. Always wondered what was in there.

Now for my sad tail my beloved Fisher & Paykel icon which i have had for about 10 years motor has pretty well died.
So i when went online looking for a new machine & it almost gave me a heart attack on the prices i wanted to get another Fisher & Paykel but with auto sense but at 2300.00$ thats way out of my budget.
So then i look at the Resmed AirSense 10 auto sense prices wow 1400.00 to 1700.00$ this is still out of my budget.
Then i look at Gumtree for a second hand machine i couldn't find a Fisher & Paykel auto sense model but i did find a Resmed AirSense 10 auto sense for 600.00$ which had only done 22 Hrs and came with a brand new heated hose & travel bag the only down side is the machine came from Singapore so the WiFi doesn't work.
I have had the Resmed AirSense 10 auto sense now for 4 nights and all is good so far i really didn't want to buy a Resmed product because of their evil ways of doing business but i needed a new machine ASAP on flip side Resmed didn't get my money

So we swapped for the night. He could not believe how hot it got. Took it in and they said, can't b repaired. I ended up buying a Fisher & Paykel for $450 which was the best machine I had. Had it for many years. When people say to make sure your generator is sine wave. Listen to them. I woke up to choking on smoke. And had to spend rest camping weekend without CPAP (which I just to do anyway) that couple years ago. Prices for new was so high. I purchase secondhand ResMed 8 LIGHTWEIGHT II . has 12 volt input, which I have not use. Instill I purchase a new one, but this one been going alright, I guess one from oversea one-day and keep this one for camping

Yes. As a result of seeing the message, I contacted the sleep clinic and they referred me to the medical supply company. The med supply co said it was expensive to replace the motor, they recommend a new cpap. My insurance wanted a new sleep study in order to obtain the cpap through the medical supply co. (I have used a cpap for years.) Sleep clinic recommended buying cpap out of pocket. Got a deal on-line. Then I figured out why there was such a good deal as it was recalled. Bought my new cpap in May.

I don't like the goofy water chamber on this new machine. What a poorly designed feature. And I can't figure out how to manually raise the humidity level to something more comfortable. But hey, I could be like my old man, stuck with the Phillips recalled machine, a provider telling him to go head and keep using it while the company tells him to stop using it and wait up to a year for a replacement. I have a Dr. Appointment on the 18th and hoping I can get the doc to put in a request for a new cpap, but I am afraid my insurance might require a new Sleep Lab to be done and with COVID-19 I really do not want to be in the hospital and that is where the sleep lab is.

Great video 👍👍. My spouse was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2013 and luckily we have an insurance plan that covered the cost of the AirSense 10 and all the attachments. She used this machine every night until August of 2021. At that time the “screen of dread” popped up so insurance bought her a newer model AirSense 10. We kept her original machine. Last month I got a referral from my doctor for the apnea diagnostic test with the resultant diagnosis of sleep apnea. So, I decided to try out her old machine. After deciphering the printout of my apnea results and after studying your tutorials I set the old machine up to suit me. The results were amazing - great sleeps… no snoring… feeling awesome in the morning… etc. when I reported this to our sleep clinic they were “not happy”. This is understandable - I was taking business away from them and, more importantly, I was venturing into unknown and possibly dangerous territory (I am not a professional sleep techie). I have a consult with them in two days at which time they will lend me a male version of the machine which I will use for three weeks after which time I can decide whether or not I want to purchase the machine (my insurance covers only the cost of the attachments and not the machine itself). I asked if it was possible to use the old machine even it was a female version. They said that they could (for a price) “change the algorithms” to make it work. Anyways… that’s my story and I’m sticking to it 😀. I have one question: if the old machine dies while I’m hooked up to it will I suffocate? Again… love the video and the kids in it👍👍👍.

I own a S9 with the same message shown after using it for 7yrs, it's said costing AU $800 to repair so I let it retired and bought AirSence 10, thank to your video I now have not 1 but two CPAP's.

I received that message. I had to do study all over again to get a new machine.

My S9's motor actually did die. I never paid any attention to the screen, so if it barked any message at me...well...I didn't notice. I found an independent repair guy, and got it replaced at a very small fraction of the cost of a "new" one.
I still have my original (simple) respironics machine; I rebuilt the motor and changed out the bearings to ABEC 7 rated ones (from the noisy ABEC 1's). I also found out how to adjust the titration, so I used it (again) while getting the S9 fixed for a couple nights. Certainly a good amount of difference, but I'll never be without.

Hey man, that's awesome! Was it hard to change the bearings?

@@CPAPReviews No, it wasn't. The unit is from ~2000; I just had to open up the fan enclosure and push each out from the inside. I also machined a new drive shaft.
