I have used a lightly brewed herb tea - such as oatstraw, mint stems. Brewed 15 -30 sec. No more. For me it has alleviated the drying out of nasal tissue. Also I have trained my tongue to stay rolled back while I go to sleep. No need for chin strap.

I'm wondering if the A-Fib I developed during surgery 15 yrs ago and stayed with me was due to unknowingly at the time having sleep apnea. A year ago, my Cardiologist suggested a sleep study. I use a BiPAP machine now with best ever results. Hang in there if you're just starting with a machines. Make use of the resources you have to help you over the hump. It takes the right mask for you and the right machine pressures for you and the right machine along with an amount of personal determination to benefit the therapeutic result.

Started using a CPAP 23 years ago. I gained a lot of weight and it was like the CPAP didn’t even work anymore. I have lost 25 Kg (~ 53 lbs) and now weigh about 175 lbs. I get a great nights sleep with my CPAP or even a decent nap sometimes without the CPAP. Beware of the impact of being overweight.

Here's the side effect I am having with my new CPAP machine....I can NOT sleep at all with the stupid thing on. I was so looking forward to getting this CPAP, the mask is comfortable, the machine is set right, but the entire experience is just too unnatural for me to fall asleep. I was sleeping much better before I got this ridiculous machine because now I don't sleep even for a a minute using this machine. I think I'm going to take it back. Apparently, CPAP is just not for me and I am very disappointed.

If you are going for a sleep lab study, take Your Own Pillow! I have had 4 done. After the first one, I took my own every time! It can be difficult to get used to being all wired up, a different bed & this mask on your face, to have to deal with a different pillow also. Most nasal makes will leak if you sleep on your back. Your face relaxes & it leaks. My best sleeping on my sides!

When I first started using CPCP many, many years ago, my biggest problem was, because of lots of headaches, I could not tighten my mask enough to prevent leakage and this led to my eyes drying out at night. I tried many different ways to protect my eyes from the leaking air. None worked! I don't remember if I talked to my doctor at that time. On my own I did research and learned about nasal pillows & picked out & bought my own headgear out of pocket. Nasal pillows are very comfortable for me.
Because I toss & turn all night (have for most of my life) I wanted headgear where the hose was in back instead of front. For many years I enjoyed using the Breeze headgear. I loved it & except for frequent breakage, I had no problems with it. Despite all my tossing it always stayed on!
After Breeze was discontinued I have never had any brand of headgear that has worked as well. I Miss my Breeze headgear!
Today, at 75, my biggest problem is that the strap that goes behind my head keeps ridding up and every time I wake, I have to pull the strap back down into position. Also, the side straps always feel like they are cutting across the edge of my eyes. Very irritating! I have bought the covers for the straps, but it only helps a little. I also have to build padding for the part that goes under my nose, other wise it hurts.
I Never had any of these problem with Breeze! I wish they'd bring Breeze back! It was perfect!
I am currently using Opus 360 Nasal Pillow Mask.
I have tried both ResMed and Dreamwear but neither is as comfortable as Opus.
I have noticed that in many reports people who started using CPAP claim to start having more energy. That has never happened for me. I just stayed tired all the time, even when I was younger. CPAP just keeps me from feeling strangled.
I currently have a BIPAP machine. It's ok, but there are times the machine and I don't sync and I end up exhaling while the machine is in inhale mode. Thankfully this doesn't happen often!
Sure wish they'd come up with something that works better & was comfortable!
    Janet

Why dont you use a nasal mask. I used to wear a face mask because I was diagnosed as a mouth breather. Through a series of discoveries over time, 15 years to be exact, I now use a nasal mask.
When I was using my full face mask I got 16 ahis per hour. I then taped my mouth and my ahis reduced to 6 or 7 an hour.
I then went the whole hog and used a nasal mask, still taping my mouth, and my ahis went to 0.5 to 1.5.
The tape I use is a 3M product, with the name Nexcare and Transpore. It costs about one pound or 1.3 dollars for 10 meters. Lasts for 70 to 80 sleeps. Make sure to cover the corners of your mouth.
I started the taping of my mouth because of some guy on youtube pushing breathing through your nose. Your nose filters and heats your oxygen intake. Look it up. I forget the actual header but put breathing through your nose in youtube and I am sure you will find it.
When you use nasal mask you will never go back to full face. When I started using it I would wake up and think oh no I forgot to put my mask on, only to find it sitting under my nose doing what it should be doing. Completely less intrusive. I am 72

I eliminated a lot of leaking by washing my face each night before putting on my mask to ensure the moisturizer I use daily is gone. I use Cetaphil and avoid using soaps with moisturizers when cleaning my face. It's taken all of a month to become adjusted to my BiPAP, and I came pretty close to quitting because I lost so much sleep. F&P's Vitera, a full-face, silicone-lined hard plastic mask (Seal, as F&P terms it) works best for me and helps keep my mouth closed. Best to wash the seal in moderately warm water to keep the silicone resilient. The seal leaks profusely when a replacement is needed.

Same here. At 68 my face can still be a bit oily which will allow the full face mask to leak everytime. Every night I must wash my face shortly before bed and also wash off the mask with soft soap and warm water. It will still leak if I go on my back but right or left side I'm fine. Mask seal must be replaced by 45 days or it will leak which they send a new one every 30 days. Also I cut a 3/4 X 3" fabric band-aid to fit on the bridge of my nose which helps the mask to seal better. Used CPAP for 10+ years. Good video.

I have been using Cpap for about 15 years. It was definitely a learning experience in the beginning. I went back and tried to get my mask changed but they said I had the right one. The one I use is over my nose. Now let’s fast forward. My new machine with heated hose and an APP so I can track my sleep and apnea is perfect. At 77, I wake up once or twice to urinate however, I now keep a hospital type urinal container by the bed and go without turning off the CPAP or turning on a light which had increased my sleep time noticeably. Having sinus issues, I now use Afrin as I go to bed each evening and my dry mouth issues have disappeared. I do not use it at all during the day to keep it from becoming a habit or causing issues. I now change masks every three months and have mostly eliminated leakes, however the strap will stretch a bit over time so it has to be snugged u[ a bit every so often. My biggest problem in the beginning cause me to have heart issues because I turn a lot during the night and my hose was wrapping around my neck so I wouldn't use it at all. Once I got AFIB, I started using it religiously and soon got past the issues. I have since had an ablation, and a year or so later, a floor pacemaker.

though. Started CPAP (Airsense 10) about three weeks ago and I use a full face mask. I actually look forward to sleeping each night. The adjustment has been very minimal
because I formerly used a dental device that moved my jaw forward along with a back
pack device that prevented me from rolling over on my back where my worst apnea
occurred. Now I can sleep on my back if wanted, but I end up sleeping on my right side
each night. So far so good. Looking at my results each day, I have less than 2 episodes
per hour on average, which sounds pretty good to me. I would recommend CPAP for

      I am 72.

SO... i have to breathe through my mouth when I sleep because my sinuses shut down when I sleep. I'm already using a full-face mask (obviously), so is there something I can do besides that sugary Biotene goop? I'm afraid I'm ruining my teeth. I fill my reservoir every night, btw.
My biggest complaint is that whoever is designing these new machines obviously doesn't use one. The last decent design was the S9 Elite, which was filled through a door in the top. It was a fairly compact machine, which I'm still using despite the fact that the motor has "exceeded it's design life". This is because when they redesigned for the newer models, claiming they take up less space, they made it so you have to slide the tank out of the side of the machine to fill it, effectively doubling the size required for the equipment. I'm already using an end-table for a night stand, and I don't think a coffee-table will fit. I don't want a Phillips machine as I've heard too many horror stories about that brand. Getting desperate, as I know my S9 won't last forever. Help?

If your using nasal and have dry mouth.... wouldn't you notice an air leak on the report? I'm having the dry mouth lately, started after I started gargling salt water before going to bed. It's only dry mouth from 3 a.m. to 7.00 a.m.?

    • @affinityhm

At least after 5 years and sometimes after 3 years. However, it’s not really an absolute as long as it’s clean and performing properly. Best to get it thoroughly assessed by a pro then decide.

Thank you for the information. One of my biggest complaints is the puffy eyes in the morning. I look TERRIBLE in the morning and those puffy bags dont go away for several hours. Its like I had salty pizza, carb filled beer and stayed awake dancing all night without the benefit of having done so!!!! Its like the water from the tank is being pushed in behind those areas and collecting there. That under eye skin is so sensitive, I fear it will stretch and those bags will become permanent. (I have used both nasal pillows and now use full face, same problem with both). I stopped using the humidification but I know that can cause its own problems, but I didnt have puffy eyes in the morning. Any further suggestions on this problem? Thanks.

Yes indeed. Try noticing the approx time you take it off then set an alarm for that time. When alarm sounds out back on.
Repeat every night and eventually the time will increase. Most likely.

I’ve got COPD and instead of a CPAP machine I’m now on oxygen. Not a lot but just enough to keep a light flow going when I’m sleeping. I’ve quit using my CPAP and rely on the oxygen. I understand it’s not an option for everyone but for anyone with COPD and sleep apnea they might talk to their doctor about oxygen.

Your mask is too tight. You have to leave enough room for the pillow to expand and create a seal. Tightening too much stops that happening and creates leaks.

My mask itches so badly I can’t stand it. I’m allergic to something in it. They’ve tried all the masks and this one is better than the rest because there’s no rash but I still itch all night. It makes be sad that my people don’t have more options. It’s suppose to be silicone and latex free but I’m pretty sure there’s a small piece of it right under my nose.

As soon as I wake and my upright, my nose runs and I sneeze like crazy. This used to be a problem in dry weather. But I live in Homg Kong. It’s humid here. Anyone experience that?

    • @affinityhm
      @affinityhm  7 месяцев назад

Are you waking up fully, or is it just the ring saying so?
In a normal night, one would go through 4-5 sleep cycles with near awakenings for each.
      Potential solutions
1 better mask (see new live video titled “new technology” pic of astronaut.
2 often a cpap hose lift helps. Seems simple but that hose could be waking you up.

I've been using the cpap machine for 3 months now. I was waking up with headaches. I tried switching masks about 6 or 7 times. Then, my doctor lowered my air pressure remotely. So, my issue was the air pressure was too high and the straps on my mask were too tight. Best to you.

My doctor would not prescribe a full mask because of the high risk of aspiration if you have reflux. I use nasal pillows and have loved every night with my CPAP. I won’t even nap without it. It took time to find the right type of mask but once I found it I never have any problems until the mask or straps wear/stretch out.
