15 years with CPAP and I won't go a night without it. I had snored like a freight train since I was 10 or 11 years old. I also had horrible heartburn every single night. I had a Costco size bottle of antacid on the nightstand and took 2 to 6 every night. I would wake up in pain. When I got the CPAP, heartburn completely disappeared within 3 days. I've had no antacids in the house for the past 15 years, and I eat anything I want. CPAP has, seriously, changed my life. I just ordered a new auto-sense machine. I had a checkup and an at-home sleep study using one and it was great, so I ordered that exact machine. If your doctor orders a sleep study and says you need CPAP, do it. Getting used to it is not that much of a problem. Took me about 2 weeks but I forced my self to use it every night. Now I refuse go go without.

For those that can't or won't wear cpap, bipap (me), apap I ask if they have a pre-arranged funeral because "you are going to need it!" Sleep apnea almost killed me. I knew that I had a problem but was "too busy" for the sleep study! Well, two strokes later I found the time! The second stroke almost got me-- blind in the left eye, couldn't walk or talk. I thought my career was over but, glory to God, I recovered in about 12 hours. An MRI shows two damaged places on my brain. Please, PLEASE understand this. Sleep apnea is DEADLY! People die in their sleep for a reason! People say "I sleep good, doc!" Near death can be mistaken for good sleep! Snoring is the alarm bell. Not all that snore have it. I do not snore I just quit breathing. Over half of the people over age 65 have a sleep disorder an d that didn't star when they were 64!!

I've been using a CPAP machine for years, and recently received a replacement machine. Your presentation is very clear and a must watch for newcomers to CPAP. There are definitely things to get used to. I've had sleep apnea for years and it negatively affected my life - always tired, that sort of thing. Then a respiratory technician told me that one day I would wake up dead because of the apnea. So I had a sleep study. Long story short, the CPAP machine may have saved my life, and my blood pressure is now manageable.
Your presentation is great, very clear.

That pressure relief on exhalation is a game-changer. Without it, there is no way I could tolerate CPAP. I tried CPAP about 12 years ago and it was hopeless. Machines and masks have come a long way since then. Also, the auto-titrating machines like the Resmed Airsense 10 make the acclimation a lot easier. Your tip of having the CPAP running for a while you are still awake in order to get used to it is dead-on. I think that this video is the best I've seen so far on this topic. Anyone who is having problems needs to watch this and take it on board.

Man, what a great talk! I wish this video had been available when I started my CPAP therapy.
-- Caution, long comment to follow:
Just as you mentioned around 1:20 , I was in that exact mindset at the beginning. I really wanted to give it a fair go, but just could not get comfortable with it. After a couple weeks, I was ready to give up and chalk it up as a fail. Pretty much everything you mentioned here happened with me. The mask, the hose, the pressure. It was actually causing me to get even less sleep than I had been getting before CPAP. I was an ornery mess, LOL.
The doctor and breathing specialists worked with me as we tried to find a solution. After all, we had a lot invested in this therapy...and I am not talking just money. We had a lot of time and energy invested, so I wanted to give this every chance possible to get a positive outcome.
...And then one day I was looking at YT videos about CPAP and different masks. That was when I discovered the Philips Respironics system. ( Mind you, I had (and still have) the ResMed AirSense 10 as the main unit and love it. ) After talking to my therapist about it, I decided to order a couple of different Respironics masks, and the frame/headgear needed to use them.
BINGO! That was the game changer for me! In that process, we discovered that I did not need a full face mask since I am mainly a nose breather. The nasal mask was a near perfect fit. As for the hose issue? Well, since the hose is attached at the top of the mask frame, I simply drape it over the headboard and Voila! No more tangling with the hose at night. Big win!
So yes, I did go through pretty much everything you pointed out in this video. For a time, I thought the pressure was a bit too high, so they reduced it slightly. Ironically, I went back a few weeks later and requested an increase in pressure. I am now on 7-15, and it is about as close to perfect as it can get. There are times when I run the "Mask Fit" mode for a few minutes as I am settling in for the night just to be sure everything is working as intended. Bottom line here is that I (with much encouragement from the doctor and therapist) did not give up on CPAP. Now I will not sleep without it.
Sorry for this novelette of a comment. Just thought I might share a little of my experience here and how you pretty much described my first few weeks on CPAP.
Again, thank you for making this video. I think anyone considering CPAP should take a listen here.

Very good video. I’ve been using c-pap machines (on my second one now) for the last 10 years, after being diagnosed with severe central AND obstructive apnea (yes, I have both although I’m a trim 134 lbs.). All I can say is that the c-pap use has been a lifesaver for me. The only times I don’t use it are when I have a runny nose or I travel overseas. I’ve used different nose masks, but they or the straps tend to leave marks on my face, so I prefer the nose pillows.

First time using a CPAP. I just got my machine during this pandemic. 6 feet social distancing, we all wore masks and gloves. I did not have a sleep study fitting. A respiratory therapist stood on one side of the room and talked me through how to use the machine. No nose sizing or fitting. Therapist judged from a distance. He did a visual and guessed a size for me. I received a medium N30i mask. I didn't know any better or I would have spent more time trying it on and testing it. It feels like it's closing off my nose. Stuffed up, can't breathe. I woke up very frustrated and came across this video. I am glad I watched this video after my first night with a CPAP. Chris has a very calm and soothing voice. I will keep trying and wear this every night going to bed. I will try during the day as well. Thank you for an informative and reassuring video.

    Dear Chris,
Hello from Chicago. I made it through my second CPAP night and I refuse to give up something that will do well for my heart and mind. I'm amazed that yesterday and today, I had no powerful uncontrollable desire to take a nap and my mind feels much better already! It has been a bit of a challenge but I need this. Thank You So Much for sharing and I appreciate your tips. I have (and I am learning) the Res Med N20. Your suggestion to wear the mask while watching TV, etc. makes perfect sense to me after getting up in the middle of the night on a sleepy frustrated brain while trying to resolve a mask leak. @@alaefarmestatesllc its hard to explain but I'll try, For at least a year before I got my cpap machine and test I was noticing that every night i was waking up gasping for air and I couldn't breath. I also felt progressively worse as the day went on, like I didn't even sleep at all. It was getting to the point where I was napping 2-3 hours a day and did not feel refreshed at all. I looked up sleep apnea as it runs in the family and noticed I had a lot of the symptoms of it. Went in to get a test and yep I had it, and it was a pretty bad version of it. I noticed within the first nights sleep I actually slept for the full 8 hours and I felt great. My energy levels came back etc. Now I hardly nap at all, and if I do instead of it being for 2-3 hours a day its once in a blue moon for 10-15 minutes max. Honestly I'll say it again if you're on the fence about it I highly recommend getting tested for it or consult with your doctor first.

@@ThatsBadTV thanks. Not on the fence about it at all. Did my sleep study a couple weeks ago. Got diagnosed with severe sleep apnea a little less than a week ago. Now waiting on insurance to ok my machine. Should get it some time next week. Soooo looking forward to it. Even though I didn’t really sleep at the sleep study. I did manage a couple of hours after they put the mask on (And it didn’t bother me at all and had a great deal, even with all the wires and crap) So didn’t feel refreshed like some people claim after their sleep study so I was kinda bummed. Lol. But I know it was because I really didn’t sleep at all. And during titration, each time they would adjust the pressure, I’d wake up then fall back asleep. A couple years ago it was like my body just crashed one day. From a workaholic working 12-16 hour days six days a week with no problems, to barely being able to get out of bed without feeling like dying from exhaustion. Would go to work, put in a couple hours and feel dead. Didn’t get checked out sooner because right around that time, covid started so avoided everyone like the plague, especially drs. Things finally started to get back to normal so I started booking drs. Appointment etc. just in time because now we have the delta variant going off where I’m at. If I get the same results as u, I’m done with drs for a while. Praying I get the same results as u.

Hi I’m from Australia and tried both full face mask and the under the nose mask. I like the under nose mask but I have had a couple of times gasping for air. The full face mask gave me the shits! Air leaks from the nose area and if I tighten it hurts. Then air escapes from the chin area. Takes me 20 adjustments every night! The full face mask also gave me puffy eyes! I read the chin strap can affect your jaw and air intake as it pushes you jaw down. I can’t win

I have been using a CPAP for the last few years. I could not sleep without it, however I have a lot of wake-ups during the night. When I sleep I sleep well. Most of the wake-ups are a result of blowouts and having to readjust my mask. I have used a variety of masks over the years, all of them being nose pillows. I started with a swift fx, then went to a resmed airfit p10. They all worked well, but could not keep them from slipping off and loosing the seal. I recently purchased a resmed airfit N30i but found it to be so noisy I couldn’t use it. I then got a resmed airfit P30i and I love it. When I put it on it stays in place for the night. I am now sleeping much better and longer than I have for a long time. Just thought I would share as I think my new mask is great.

Also with the CPAP at the prescribed pressure I have very bad stomach (wind) pains through the night.
My specialist has halved the required pressure which relieved the pains - but I no longer have any confidence that CPAP is doing me any good.
Also, the constant requirement to replace masks, hoses, headgear, filters at ridiculous prices.

Thank you, Chris, for being in the world.
Being in Israel as a war zone, 2 months ago it was possible to get the Prisma SMART only without the humidifier. They promised to dispatch it as soon as it arrives which happened only recently. I was advised to meantime keep a small bottle near the bed in case my mouth gets dry.
When severe dryness woke me up, I’d created a leakage over the chine to insert a drinking straw.
Despite many waking, I liked the cool soothing flow of air and resolved to stay positive. I followed the advice of another, to help get acclimated to the treatment by imagining being a top-gun pilot wearing an oxygen mask. I took it one step further by requesting my subconscious mind each evening to deliver me certain solutions via the air pipe.
An improvement was noticeable but not satisfying enough; I was still tired to a disturbing degree.
When I first connected the humidifier recently, I was disappointed as now hot air replaced the cool air I got so used to. It made it harder to fall asleep again.
Dry mouth was still occurring to a disturbing degree prompting me to desperately move the humidity level from 3 to 5, but I woke up facing condensation.
I recall that one doctor suggested using also a room humidifier. Could this work instead of an attached one?
In the parcel, I found a nose mask, probably as compensation from the vendor for the delay. Would that be an option for me as a life-long mouth breather?
Can the air temperature somehow be reduced without sabotaging the flow-over evaporation process?

I am so tired! Your response will be highly appreciated. Thank you.
    Amos

I’ll bet an extra link of tubing would work. We don’t sell them but they do make a coupler so that you can use 2 links of tubing. Also this doesn’t effect the pressure do therapy is still good.

I threw my CPAP out, a few times. Benefits? I wake up anyway. I went into neurology and they played with me all night long to figure out the pressure. But the buggers woke me up at 6 am. That was the best sleep I had ever. Two years ago? They did coach me how to sleep. I do better hugging a pillow staying on my left side.
Better than aerophagia and diarrhoea blowing air out my @rse.
I still have a decent mask. It's comfortable and doesn't leak.
    I tried the chin strap.
I just want to stay asleep for more than 3 hours.

Thank you, yeah I found putting on the tv, reading a book or going on the phone while it’s on at the beginning of my use made it much easier to get used to than thinking about whether I’d be able to breathe. It distracted me from the panic feeling that comes with a machine being introduced as a helper for breathing. So much of our control or lack there of is through our breathing and when that is changed in anyway outside of ourselves people tend to feel that lack of control… it’s normal. Great advice and those who are starting out distract yourselves a little along with consulting with your doc for fitment and pressure settings. Your adjustments with straps too can affect your comfort with the mask to skin too.

I've been on CPAP for 22 years. Now I can't sleep without it. If you stick with it, you will get used to it. I promise. Also, keep trying on different masks, until you find one that works for you. There are a lot more to choose from, than 22 years ago. Back then, it was a one size fits all problem. Especially if you are a woman. I just got a new style of mask. The ResMed N30i . It is the best mask I've ever had, as far as fit, comfort, a lot less air leaks, and less stuff in your face. Even if you've been on CPAP for years, you can still try out the new masks. You won't be sorry.

I've been on a CPAP for 18 months. Use and Airsense 10. I have tried a bunch of different masks and since I am not much of a mouth breather have come to like the under the nose masks. I have liked the Philips Dreamwear mask and the Resmed N30i. I tried the pillow adapter but can't get good enough flow. The biggest problem I have had is getting the individual nose adapters to line up perfectly with my nostrils. When they are perfectly aligned, I breath great, even if I am a little stuffed up. But when they slide just a little off, it can suppress my breathing ability by what feels like around 50%. I will sometimes wake up in the morning and it will be a little off and I find myself uncomfortable, even resorting to mouth breathing to get around it. I would say that this only happens 2% of the time. In terms of consistency, it is really important that I understand how tightly to fit these devices every time I clean them or change them in some way. The Resmed mask needs to be less tightly applied for me. The Dreamwear kind of needs to be firmly set, this forces the nose adapter to wrap a bit more around my nose and puts the holes exactly where my nostrils need them and also results in much less leakage. But this approach has not worked for the Resmed. It has a much softer nose adapter but that also has a hard plastic backside. When I tighten this one up, the hard plastic backside, puts pressure on my nose and it will actually feel pain when I awaken. Not a good thing. Because the rest of the nose adapter is so soft, when I find that right pressure to apply it, that soft nature of it allows it to adjust nicely on the fit to my nostrils. Every time I take these things out and clean them, refitting them is a little bit of a crap shoot, sometimes I get them perfect the first time and sometimes it takes me 2 or 3 nights of adjustments. Then they have to cleaned again so that all kind of sucks. However, over time I have gotten better at re-fitting them. And I tend to go back and forth between these two masks, so I have to get used to both of them and know the difference in fitting each of them.
When I started I had a great deal of problem with the breathing out pressure that really bothered me. I got around that by being sure my sinuses were as clear as possible when I went to bed and I use a full hour of ramp up time.
Overall the Resmed mask has more leakage than the Dreamwear mask, however I have gotten my events per hour down to around 0.9. I was at around 3-5 for the first 6 months or so and tested out at 70 events per hour when I was diagnosed. My therapist doubted I would ever get below 10 so my current rate is super great in my estimate. Even with the problems that do occur, sleeping without the CPAP has proven to be a real pain in the rear. I do this every once in awhile just to see where I am at. I always wake up with a dry, raspy throat and a headache.
    Hope my story helps.

I'm sorry that it's so difficult. Three suggestions, call your doctor or supplier for
      1. Assess the possibility of temporary pressure adjustments
      2 different mask
3 work on concentrate on something else when your trying to fall asleep. Visualize a story in your mind and follow it through. Would it be possible to read as you fall asleep?
      Suggestion 1 is best.
      Best wishes to you.

Also if you keep trying something that fails, maybe it is time to look into other options beyond cpap and talk to doctors who can help with those otions (weight loss, mouth guard, surgery) . Or other cpap masks.
Cpap has a high drop out rate for various reasons. Maybe people need to try more mask types, pressure settings, etc. A lot of people prescribing it are not paying attention to their patients very well, so you have to be proactive.
Or talk to an ENT as to why it may not be working.

Chris you seem to have some good knowledge with this CPAP. Okay I'm on my third day and so far it sucks. I'm going to try and not write a whole novel here for you to read. The unit that I have is a ResCare it's supposed to increase gradually as you fall asleep, my problem is if I get up and go to the bathroom when I come back I feel like I'm putting a hurricane on my face. The full face mask was horrible all it did was blow out my cheeks and pop my ears constantly that drove me nuts. The machine was mailed to me and I have had zero help with it. I will start wearing it while I'm watching TV before I go to bed that's a good idea. I seem to take it off during the night I can't find silicone part usually it's laying someplace around. A couple of different people that I have talked to in person or via RUclips said try different kinds, that's all good but I don't have three or four hundred dollars to spend on trying all these different kinds and the provider will not give me more. I really do want to be able to use this and will keep trying if I have to duct tape this damn thing to my face I will. any other suggestions you have I would be grateful. Thank you so much.
