    Insightful, thank you for these instructions. I have moved into a rented house and the landlord is a bit of a not bothered kind of guy, I asked him to put me a shower in and he told me no.

      @@dereton33 I've just done it, and it was really easy, took me a little longer than what it took you probably an hour to get it done, I also unblocked the bath and sink while I had the bath panel off.
      That spanner that you used I had to borrow from a neighbour as I was trying to do it with maul grips and it just wasn't turning the far tap bolt, once I used that it was just a case of popping the new mixer tap in place and putting it back together like I had took it off.
      thanks for your video, it was just like you had shown and it was easy to follow.

    I can definitely recommend doing this, because you get a shower, also you can now get thermostatic mixer taps that keep the flow of water at a steady temperature, I have just Googled them and you can get a pair for about £ 80, but saying that, it might be worth getting a plumber to do it to make sure it is done properly, it is a tricky job.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  9 лет назад

      Mark Hall Good advice Mark. You do have to have a lot of self confidence to do this job.

    • @fastersmarter
      @fastersmarter 9 лет назад

      The problem with thermostatic taps is that you lose a lot of pressure as they restrict the flow, even with a decent pump. So they aren't always appropriate.
      Manual mixers are better in many instances and are a lot more reliable.
      This is especially true if you use a large rain style shower head and live alone. As you only really get temperature fluctuations when other people in the household are running the other taps, filling the washing machine etc.
      I tend to install single lever manual mixers. As they don't tend go wrong and you can get very expensive manual taps that look as good as the thermostatic ones.

    Had an unrelated question. Have a sink basin with the lever that raises the plug. It is operating, i.e., the mechanism moves when I have my hands to it behind the pedestal I can check it. However the plug does not go up. Had this some years ago and solved it simply but cannot remember how! Mrs complaining. Changing it is a pain cause I need to remove pedestal and hold it up (sink only attached to wall via two bolts and may fall?). Any idea what I might have done last time to fix it simply. Perhaps as you are so experienced it may be a simple thing for you, a common problems.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  7 лет назад

      Hi Daniel, usually the small chrome clamp that holds the two push rods together comes loose, so when you push the lever down to raise the plug it does not lift the rod going to the plug.

    • @DrDanielHoward
      @DrDanielHoward 7 лет назад

      Thanks. Actually what happened in my case was that the plug itself has a threaded rod with a nut and so it is adjustable in height. As it got corroded it became loose and lost its height. That is why it could not be lifted. The mechanism was fine. It was hard to determine this for I had to move the pedestal hiding everything - dangerous thing. Then I unscrewed the outlet and stuck my finger and lifted the plug. Now I see it is just the plug.

    Hi Al.
    Going to replace my bath taps in next few days. Got a gravity fed system, tank in loft and immersion in upstairs cupboard. Took panel off bath and noticed that cold feed is 15mm but hot is 22mm. Why would that be the case? I think the cold is mains fed as it is a good flow rate and pressure. Is the 22mm on the hot just to increase the flow rate?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  10 лет назад +4

      Alan Hurley You are right the 22 mm hot one is to increase the flow rate whereas the cold is off the mains and has plenty of pressure.

      @ach2935 10 лет назад +1

      dereton33 Cheers Al

  • @loafersheffield
    @loafersheffield 6 лет назад

    Ah, but if the cold water is off the mains (high pressure) and the hot water is tank via cylinder (gravity fed) , there will be a disparity on flow rate. You would need a booster pump off the hot installed. Otherwise cold showers. If the water mixes in the tap body rather than the spout, the mains pressure could also back fill the tank via the cylinder and result in the tank overflowing out thru the overflow/warning pipe.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  6 лет назад

      This job is only recommended to work on low pressure cold and hot feeds or a combi boiler, where the pressures are equal. I did say this in the video.

    Hi, a bit hard up but desperately need a shower because of thyroid problem causing me to sweat to the max whenever I sweat (it's as if there is only on or off, no low sweat, just max) and running a bath three or four times a day is not practical. I learnt a lot from your video and am confident I could do it. What I need to know is, under my bath is two upright rigid copper pipes (hot and cold) both with flexi hose from pipe to tap. Are the fittings on these flexi hoses standard and will they fit any Shower mixer taps I buy I'm not sure where to measure them to get the size). Should I buy a separate mixer tap set and shower upright, or a kit. Is there any particular shower mixer tap below £100 you might recommend. Hope you can advise and thanks for the informative vid. Cheers

    Not the easiest of jobs
    Our mixer taps seem to be either on or off and its very difficult to get adjust the cold to balance the hot, from the storage cylinder, so you end up being either scalded or a cold shower. I also find if you adjust the cold by opening the cold taps a half turn it will suddenly turn itself on fully, without the taps being touched. Is this poor quality B&Q taps or is it usual. There is a regulator on the cold feed.
    Thanks

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  9 лет назад

      icespeckledhens If your cold supply is mains feed, which you can easily check, by seeing if you can stop the flow of water by putting your thumb over the end of the tap, if you cannot, then it is mains feed and will never mix properly, your only recourse is too drop a feed from the roof tank to your cold bath tap. Hot and cold pressures will then be equal and your taps will work fine.

    • @icespeckledhens
      @icespeckledhens 9 лет назад

      dereton33 Thanks
      It is mains feed and I fitted a pressure reducer, after the installation, to reduce the mains feed to match the pressure from the hot water. It has improved a bit was that not a good idea? Its a bit difficult to fit a pipe with the bathroom fully tiled. Its a pity that the so called plumber who fitted it when he had the bathroom stripped out did not do it then

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  9 лет назад

      Yes that is a shame, you could always go the other way and fit a small shower pump to the hot, if you got a one and a half bar pump and match that down to the same pressure on your mains pressure reducer, you would then get an equal shower balance.

Is there anything else id have to consider?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  5 лет назад

      Yes, just make sure that if you have an F and E system the cold supply is feed from the roof tank, otherwise you will not be able to balance the hot water with the cold. If you have a combi boiler then no problem, it will work well.

  • @DrDanielHoward
    @DrDanielHoward 7 лет назад

    Also, have a situation whereby only one bath tap is hard to move. Some six months ago my friend opened that tap and cleaned the mechanism. Now it got hard again so hard that I could not shut it so took the rubber thing off and even then the Allen key would not take the thing off, so I sort of yanked it off by turning it. Then I stopped the water with a spanner (shut the tap). Now tempted to take it all out and replace whole thing as in your video. However, do you think it possible to refresh the single tap? Are all taps a bit different? What is the best option?

    Yes, should probably mention that the water has to go off first before undoing anything. Surely nobody that stupid would forget to do that or might twig it when you undo the nut slightly and then get sprayed! Good tutorial, just thought I'd watch someone else do it before I had a go.

    and lift it and screw the nut to the pipe whilst lying on my side. next time ill use push fit drop them through and cut
    the 22, god i was on it for two hours in the July heat.

    Those plastic backing nuts are prone to breaking so I always use brass or gunmetal nuts - much stronger and not expensive.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes they do break. I just did not have any when I fitted these. Happy to say though they are still ok after 10 years.

    Hi, I've changed my taps and have a small leak on hot water side. It's leaking when water is lying around where tap enters bath (when showering). Any advise on how to better seal? Have a rubber washer ontop and below bath. Would a tophat plus back nut work?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  7 лет назад +1

      Yes the top hat usually works, also take the rubber washer off on the top of the tap and use plumbers mait.

    my bath taps are leaking, but they are rigid,pipes fitted is it ok to reuse the pipes or am I best cutting them and using flexi pipes?

    • @dereton33

      Graeme Cunningham It`s ok, you can use the old pipes, it is just that using flexi pipes gives you an easier fit.

    • @MikeKeel
      @MikeKeel 4 года назад

      Hot water can take a long time as it has to empty the tank or cylinder. Make sure the cold is turned off too and the hot is isolated next to the water cyclinder in the airing cupboard. Normally a red gate valve.

    Thank you Dereton33, changed mine, saved a fortune and felt accomplished in the process! Only thing I had to add is that I had to shut off the COLD water going into the combi boiler to shut off the HOT tap (which may not be obvious to the novice). No doubt this is covered in your other videos though.
