@@24lancelot85 Just crazy to think about...he was only like 34 years old back in 2005 and had already won 70 races...imagine if he had kept up that same pace of winning all through until he retired. Still had a very decent last 10 years or so though anyway, even though everyone's winning pace tends to fall off as they get older. Gordon was truly one of the greatest motorsport talents of all-time.
I always thought Jeff's "face turn" in the eyes of fans was his 2007 UAW-Ford 500 win. I think that was the first win he got after it was announced that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was going to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008.
As a Jr Fan I felt like he let this one Slip out of his Hands by not Blocking Gordon with a Few to Go. But I have Great respect for Gordon as a Driver.
Mike Joy probably didn't realize what he said, but when he said "This is the Daytona 500" before the restart, it really is true that the Daytona 500 basically became a 2-lap crapshoot because of the rule changes. Nascar turned the Daytona 500 from a captivating drama-filled 500-mile endurance race into a 2-lap 5-mile lame ass shootout. They actually did this to all their races and then fans disappeared.
0:58 Busch made a hell of a run off Earnhardt and Gordon/his spotter won the race recognizing he had a run quickly. Passing, like a lot of day races at Daytona, ain't easy. If Busch got through, it was game over.
@JeffGordonFanForLife That's the same story I have. I was in second grade, and this is really the first real memory I have of watching a NASCAR race. Apparently I saw Dale Sr.'s crash in 01, I don't remember that, but my father says that I sort of knew what was going on. I don't remember that, but yet I remember 9/11.
NASCAR 06 Total Team Control Dodge Challenge The Daytona 507.5 Objective: Make History 2005 Daytona 500 Player: Jeff Gordon Opponents: Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Scott Riggs
Don’t mean to knock tradition, but if NASCAR races were like a third less than the total laps of most races they have, I feel It’d more intense and exciting
Everyone hated Jeff Gordon back then because he wasn't from the deep south. I remember everytime he'd win people would throw beers and garbage at his car
My whole life Ive been a huge Jeff Gordon fan. My mom died two months before this and no one will ever realize how huge this was for me.
Damn, that's powerful man! Such a special memory.
The only NASCAR race I've ever attended and, as a die-hard Gordon fan, priceless memories were made.
I was infield as a kid screaming mom he's gonna do it ! I herd crowd I'm like did he get it ? Yep!
The moment when everyone began to like Gordon because they realized how great of a driver he truly was.
Pffffttt...they knew it long before this race. This was his 5th Daytona 500 wins and this was his 70th win.

3rd Daytona 500 win

terribly sorry for your loss...God Bless, take care. #24!
Gordon had some power in his Chevy that day!
Mike joy has to be the greatest announcer in the business
I swear early 90’s-early 2000’s was peak sports. Nascar, Attitude Era WWF, and MJ.
3 WIDE THERE BOUNCING OFF EACH OTHER!

i was 7 when i watched this and i cryed tears of joy... its my first real memory of being a nascar fan
My favorite NASCAR memory as a Gordon fan for me
It's amazing what something as simple as watching someone else win a race can do for you.
Gordon held off the best of the best. Jr., Stewart, Johnson, Busch
world is healing. the 24 car is back in Daytona 500 victory lane.

Yeah, same, after this race, Jeff was my favorite. Still is!!
@Adamwinters Oddly I can't even remember seeing this footage replayed since 2005. It's like people completely forgot about this race.
If you haven’t watched a NASCAR clip with this quality, what are you doing
Ice in his veins.
Nascar isnt like this anymore. Listen to that crowd
Jimmie throwing impressive blocks to keep Tony out of the picture
Tony was bitching after the race because a Jimmie blocked him but Jimmie gets the last laugh because he won 2 500s.
I remember when I went to races and see Jeff Gordon in driver intro, he'd get the most boos I've ever heard.
