In this video, I explain how to properly update your X5's firmware to ensure you get access to this new feature and I show you how it looks on the watch as I test it out on one hole at my home golf course.

I think mostly on new courses but it will be interesting to play about with potential new strategies on the fly on my home course, working on game management I see it as really useful tool too
Definitely. I've given a lot more thought over the last few rounds to course management - it's amazing how big a difference it makes. I used MyStrategy to form a strategy for my round on a new course at the weekend and stuck to it - with great results. I'm going to release a video about it soon so keep your eyes peeled for that one!

In the video you were able to move the pin. Can you move around the tee markers for better accuracy with the distances off the tee?
I moved the pin on the green view screen which pulls through to the map data. You can’t move the tees as it pulls through from GPS so you’d have to go to that location (tee) to get an accurate distance. Hope that makes sense

Does that apply to V5 too (beside touch screen)? And does the hole map show bunkers too? (watch is being delivered soon.. can't wait)
Hey there. V5 shows the overview of the hole and bunkers etc. like the X5 - the only difference is that the X5 shows you a line overview where your three longest clubs would finish from the tee based on your last 10 rounds. V5 doesn’t show this data but does allow you to move the marker up and down on the hole to see how far you’d have to hit to reach a specific point on the fairway. Andy, great video. This may be a stupid question as I don't own an X5, but can you tap on the menus as well? The crown looks a bit clunky. E.g. when you're selecting which club to show on the map. Thanks!
Hey Sam. You can control movement either by scrolling and tapping on the screen or rotating and pressing the crown. I actually prefer using the crown as it’s not a bother at all. I was trying to control my watch whilst looking through camera view finder so wasn’t easy 🤣. The maps are a great addition to an already excellent watch that is packed with features and has no on-going subscription.

I played yesterday, the update is very good. Allows me to visually check distances to water hazards and bunkers.
Love to hear it. I can’t see any reason why this wouldn’t be a useful addition, especially when playing a course you’re not familiar with. Although we’ve always had the hazard information, I think seeing exactly where the hazards are and their shape is really useful!

Thanks for the video. Have they removed the screen that shows the distances to hazards? I understand you can see these on the map but it looks like you have to move the line to get any kind of distance to them?
No, those are still there. Just one extra swipe to the left when looking at the hole map and you can see the same hazard menu as before!

Where are the P Av numbers coming from?, I would like to use 2023 numbers. Does it default to the last 10? Can't find where this is? Thanks
Great question and one that I have wondered too. My dad looks very much like my last 10 in terms of closeness, but that’s not spot on. I’ll ask shot scope and get back to you.
@@AndysGolfBlog As a 4 index I swap quite a bit for SG between 5 hcap and Scratch for comparisons as I can't pick an individual target like 3 for example. This needs some sort of rethink on the app to make what you have selected clearer imho. Look forward to your response to P av, thanks.
Yeah, I do the same for SG but with 5/10 as I'm a 7. That said, this data is being pulled from your Club Performance Averages and not SG data, but it would be good to know how many rounds it's using for this data.
I do also agree that it would be good to allow the user to compare against ALL handicap levels, not just increments of 5. I'll feed this back to the team at Shot Scope too.
Thanks for info. As you said it would be useful to know what time period the av is taken from as at the moment I can’t tell. Hopefully you can get an answer.
Apparently it's the past 10 rounds. My numbers were close but not exact, so have gone back to Shot Scope to see if they can work out what's going on.
For some reason I never seem to have an option for a firmware update show up on my app nor my watch.

Hey. The reason for that will likely be that your watch hasn’t connected to the app properly. After you choose connect device, what happens? Does it say device connected then go back to ‘connect device’? If you successfully connect then you’ll definitely have the firmware update (which only ever appears on the app, not your watch).
I’d suggest going into your Bluetooth settings on your phone and unpair the X5 connection. Then, follow the advice in this video and repair your x5 with your phone. The update should then be visible once you connect to the app.
It’s also worth making sure the app is up to date too.

Nice one, Ali. Just follow the steps Shot Scope provided and it should be okay. Not sure if you're Andriod or IOS but just be sure to pair the device with the app after the firmware has been updated.
I've played 3 rounds recently and have tried to connect device with my X5 and it won't connect. My X5 also doesn't respond to swipes either. This is my second watch that has happened to. I pretty much only use it for distances to the green and that's it. Anybody else have these issues?
Sorry to hear this. First suggestion would be to unpair using the options with your phones bluetooth settings then use the 'Add New Device' option from the 'More' menu within the app to pair your X5 with your phone. That should allow you to then access the app with the device connected. Cannot comment on the swiping issue to be honest as mine works fine. Admittedly, It's not the most responsive of screens but it works for me.
I guess you'll need to go back to Shot Scope support for some answers. Hopefully they'll be able to help!

Is the x5 better now compared to the criticisms at release?
Certainly. I have a review video coming soon. Many of the early reviews you’ll find on here highlight issues that have been resolved.
- The battery issue whereby the watch wouldn’t manage even on round has been fixed. It manages one round comfortably now, and gets close to two. I’ve had two full rounds twice and 52 holes when interacting with the watch often.
- The touchscreen has been improved in terms of lag. Whilst still not as responsive as I’d like, it works well.
- GPS connection issues when initiating a round have been resolved. Obtains a GPS connection in no time now.
- shot scope are working on a rain mode release at the moment to help with touchscreen issues in the rain.
I’ve used the X5 since pre-release last year until last month, capturing over 40 rounds and it has generally worked really well. There were issues at the beginning but many, if not all have been resolved now.

Yeah, that would be cool. Might be a bit tricky for them to do or to display on the screen but you never know. Definitely a good idea, though!

Haha a couple of okay rounds. Averaged 8 last year for 18 rounds so hoping to get 5 this year. Mind you, the +10 at the weekend isn’t going to help with that. First full round of 2024, though!

Aye, there’s a semi decent golfer in there somewhere - just has to be found!
Blairgowrie was enjoyable. I wasn’t majorly impressed but it was winter tees and mats, so hard to get a feel for the course. Looks like it’ll be good in the summer, so would return, but not at £140 a round. I just found it a little flat and perhaps unexciting, but it was in great condition to be fair to it. I’d pay to play with a member or on a special deal but for £140, there are so many better courses in my opinion.
What I will say was that the bar staff were really pleasant and the Victoria sponge was up there with the best I’ve ever had! 😂😂

@@AndysGolfBlog really good. Love that feature in the strategy planner in the app/on desktop, such a good use of the data. This (and dogleg distances, which I really think they should have brought to the V3) might make me upgrade from my V3
Yeah, the X5 is big step up from the V3, which is a watch I’ve always enjoyed using. The thing is, like most tech out there, they’re always going to add new features to their latest products. V3 has been out for years and in truth, that’s extra development time (time and money) which is probably better spent in the eyes on their latest products, which I think makes sense. I guess at least the V3 is still supported, which is good!
And yes - MyStrategy is also a great addition. I actually tested that out at the weekend for a new video I’m in the process of making just now. Very handy tool!
@@AndysGolfBlog yes I appreciate that the V3 has been out a while, I was surprised this evening to realise I've had mine over two years! But the dogleg distances are literally just text to put on the same screen as the hazards - they have all the data already! I understand why they do it, to push new sales, but the development effort is just a convenient excuse. They add new bunkers no problem.

Yeah, the bands can be only be selected at point of sale and aren’t available as accessories like they are with the G5 and v3.

That’s fair enough, Colin. I think the good thing is that they’ve added this, so the option is there for people to use if they want to. Whilst I doubt I’ll use it at my own home course (only really use hazards), I’ve absolutely no doubt that I’ll be using this when playing courses I’m not familiar with. I think that’s where the real value is!
