- A brief explanation (with charts!) of what exactly is going on with this channel the past couple weeks. Yeah, I'm equally stumped.
(If you find my voice annoying, this video also has manually-edited closed captions.)
UPDATE: Traffic has calmed back down to much more normal levels on the "how do you spell that?" video, so I've reenabled comments on it as I said I would.

Yea i got the how do you spell that vid and i looked at the date it was posted and i was amazed how old the video is and the comments dont even have replies so i left a comment on it. Nice seeing something as rare as this, subbed.
Oh, yeah, I had a line covering the whole comment reply thing in my original script, but it got edited out. The current design with threaded replies was only introduced when RUclips revamped their commenting system in 2013.

I have to politely disagree with you. the comments on an old video that goes viral for no reason are very enjoyable. The amount of likes on some of the comments also shows that people do enjoy reading comments specially when the content of the video is comedic and not controversial. You could've at least monitored the top comments for like 3 days and if they were toxic - which I don't think they would - you could've then disabled the comments.
Anyway, thanks for that video it really made me laugh and I hope you the best in your life.
Even though the spelling bee videos I've posted are uncontroversial, I've still had to moderate out some comments in the past that were on the verge of being transphobic or ableist, if not completely over the line. You'd be surprised at how rude people can get on completely innocuous videos. :/

The "how do you spell that" video was from the 2005 bee, so the oldest contestants from that bee would be in their late 20s or possibly even 30 now.

Haven't really looked into it, to be honest. I mostly just do this kind of thing as an occasional side hobby, and already have a day job as a software engineer that takes up a big chunk of my time.
@@codeman38 oh that’s cool, with the views you have if you always had monetization you would have around 20k from that :o
@@crono161 That's half correct and half wrong, monetization allows you to place adds and get the money, the amount of adds is what determines the money you get; a more accurate number would be around 1.2k per 1 million views, if the video is longer than 8 minutes you can place 2 adds(doubling the money if people watch it completely). So his 1 minute video with (currently) 5 million views would of gotten him around 6k (if you can even monetize it)

I'm just here to again inform you that you can mute activity notifications for your channel- that way you're not bothered by incessant comments. First, you click your profile picture at the top right of the browser you're logged in to, then scroll over settings, click settings. Scroll down to notifications, this should be the second option on the left side just below the account tab. Click that, then scroll to where it says "your preferences" and it should give you 7 total on-off switches labelled as follows: subscriptions, recommended videos, activity on channel, activity on my comments, replies to comments, mentions, shared content. Click the on-off switches on "activity on my channel, activity on my comments, replies to my comments, mentions" to off and you won't be bothered by the number of interactions you will be getting from now on for that one video.

Hilariously, I got that video recommended to me just now, and this is how I saw this video. Even though I follow you on Twitter I've never seen it before to my knowledge, so I went to check your channel and saw... This.
The algorithm is truly terrifyingly weird. Although I do at least seem to avoid most of the egregious content. Even the one exception I've seen, I can see why I get the recommendation; I watch a fair bit of sportsball content on YT including sporadically track and field, the algorithm sometimes throws up a clip from a mixed-gender 4x400 relay as uploaded by a notorious transphobe who happens to also have a highly-watched clip of a historic moment from his sportsball team - and I've viewed multiple other videos from that specific game, too.
I'm very lucky, really. I'm older-Millennial like you, so I didn't get the chance to be radicalised by online gaming fascists to the extent I would have done if I were even five years younger. Instead, I was the right age to be radicalised by the Iraq war instead, and I often wonder what happens to me if that doesn't happen.

I'm glad it was recommended! I've just…stumbled onto the comment sections of videos that inexplicably get 2 million views in a week, and sometimes wanted to run away from them. 😓

There's literally no reason to care about what some strangers posted in your comments. They aren't meant to be "enjoyable reading experiences", they're meant to be a comment section in a RUclips video. Don't make it into something it's not, and there's no need to monitor comments like a weirdo to stop what you consider to be thoughtcrime.
Sorry. I tend to be a bit on the overly cautious side as an autistic queer person who's seen both of those identities tossed around as insults in viral RUclips comment threads in the past.
@@codeman38 for the love of god don't use your sensitivity towards insults as an excuse to punish people for saying something you don't like. As a queer person myself youre being extremely childish and if anything making discriminatory rhetoric more prevalent by trying to unjustly censor it. If youre going to insist on being immature then toggle your notifications off or block the words you're especially sensitive to. No need to be rude in the comments of your videos and needlessly passive aggressive.
I did say that I'd reenable comments once the traffic calmed down to a reasonable level. After looking at the analytics charts, they're reenabled now.
