- A series of amusing clips from past National Spelling Bees shown during ABC's broadcast of the 2006 bee. See, spelling bee nerds do have a sense of humor! (And I use the term with no ill intent; I'm a former speller myself...)
(I'm only uploading this because ABC/ESPN/Scripps, as far as I know, don't sell any videos of the competition to the public. If they ever start doing so, I'll gladly take this down.)

well, when you are standing there in a stressful situation and your adrenalin starts to go, the natural instinct is to move, but since it's not exactly apropos to go running around screaming at a spelling bee, it's surprising that more kids don't faint from just standing there.

I saw one person who was very determined to win, they got the word burrito and they were very confident. They were also the first person to go up. Then they said B-I-R-A-T-O and they started crying when they got it wrong. I don't know if it was recorded but I hope it was.

I agree in a sense. But English has roots in all roman character based languages (German Included). I find it entertaining and harmless. Good way for these kids to build self esteem.

it's not just americans who are involved in spelling bee's. if i'm correct i believe that originated in europe. and they are a very clever idea, people who are gifted with a language ability can compete to win thousands of dollars and school scholarships
