This book was one of the best I've read in a long time… As you're reading, it feels COMPLETELY different than Twilight--which I was thankful for. It was almost as if Stephanie Meyer didn't write it at all. I would definitely say that The Host was waaaayyyy better than all of the Twilight books and movies put together...
Except for yet again, some more weird, creepy age gap-related grossness from Stephenie Meyer, I agree. Besides that, I absolutely love the book and the whole concept, all the details about the other alien species (I just wish we got more info about how this race of "Souls" came to be and how they developed the technology to go around the galaxy like that, how that would even be possible for a species like themselves and how they came to be sentient without the ability to function on their own and grow to create and use the tech on their own and without the use of a host's body, etc, and just more explanation on the whole thing concept which I would just looove to hear about!).. And however contradictory the oh-so-peaceful alien species that goes around basically exterminating sentient species while at the same time having the most calm, rational, and fair take on life (lol whhat?), hmm... Yeah, that woman definitely has something wrong with her with all the age difference-related romantic stuff goin on in her books, but anyway. Besides that, loved it. Def one of my favorite books too! Cheers!
There is absolutely no reason why a guy couldn't read this. I read books with guys as the protagonist all the time (it was almost all I read when I was young).
Though I have to admit that there are some problematic interactions in this book, a lot of them are related to the nature of the main character, who in this case is of an alien race with a society that is built purely on self sacrifice. And this is also combined with theme of family in this book, considered that there are some many references to Wanderer discovering the feelings of a 'mother' for the first time, willing so sacrifice everything to keep the ones she loves safe.
I saw Jake and Max and Stephanie at Barnes and Noble in Dallas today and I had no idea they were going to be there. I wanted to cry, I was so upset that I came just a little too late and wasn't able to get a picture or anything signed, but I said hi to them at least.
It's interesting - I've had an avid dislike of Twilight since it came out, but randomly decided to pick up "The Host" when my family was taking a beach vacation over the winter holidays and I wanted some "mindless fluff" to read. I found myself absolutely unable to put the book down once I started it. My friends give me grief for liking a Stephenie Meyer book and won't take me seriously when I say its good and they should read it - but I stand by the fact that The Host proves she's a good writer
It's suitable for people who read YA, but there is some violence and it's a bit more intense than a lot of YA books. I always read books that were meant for an older audience when I was young, so I'm not sure what to recommend.
I hardly took breaks for food when I read this book. I'm a slow reader, but I finished it in 4 days. Haven't read it since it came out - maybe I'll tackle it this summer...
I actually bought this book four or five years ago when it was only available in hardcover, right after reading Twilight and I never got around to reading it. Thanks for the motivation to get it done, I totally forgot about it being a movie!
I also read this book in 2008 and instantly fell in love. I cannot tell you how many times I have reread it! I am so excited to see this book turned into a movie. I also look forward to your review of it! Thanks for reviewing!
(2) I agree that it definitely gives you material to think about, but I have a feeling that Jared, for example, would have made a lot of the same sacrifices/would have accepted the same situations that Mel/Wanda went through, in order to keep the ones he loves safe. I also think that compared to al lot of YA books, Wanderer/Melanie is/are (this is complicated :D) a very strong and brave character with a lot of depth.
That's basically one of the most interesting themes of the book. Trying to figure out which side is the 'bad' side. And in the end, there isn't really an answer.
I really liked the book. It took me a while to get into it, but once I got past the first chapters I couldn't put it down. I loved the sci-fy aspects of the book
Brilliantly summarised! I hate it when people dismiss anything Stephenie Meyer just because of Twilight. Yes, the story line of Twilight wasn't very good, but I personally thought that the actual way she worded things in those books was really good. I feel like Stephenie combined that great writing with a good story line in The Host.
no matter what mood im in: i always click your book reviews when they pop up in my subscription feed. youre always so informed, competent and fun to listen to. yeah, this is just an appreciation post, as ive never managed to finish the book myself when it came out in 2008. I stopped about 100 pages in. i cant quite remember why now and might give it another go after watching this.
I've read it 6 or 7 times I think. I read the twilight series, had my obsession, and am now kind of bitter toward Stephanie Meyer. But I love this book...The Host is completely different from the twilight series, so it makes me sad that people avoid it because they have the same author. I read it once, hated it. Read it again, liked it. And every time I reread it, I love it even more. Only book I've read more than 3 times
@@deborahminter6231 this being nearly a decade ago, I've gotten over that as well and just enjoy things for what they are 😁 twilight was and is fun. The host is still great
I always tell people not to judge this book from what they know of the Twilight series because it's so different. My favorite thing about it is that it's so strongly character-driven and you really feel bad for the alien in this situation just as much as you do the human. Stephenie Meyer really deserves more credit than she's given if only because of this book.
I read this in 2009 when I was really into Twilight and I immediately just fell in love with it. The thing that I found that helped me start was just powering through because I remember the first few chapters I just had no idea what was going on and just being so confused and then going back and re-reading it and was like, "boom". It is definitely one of my favourite books and it's disappointing that so many people avoid it because they dislike Twilight.
Every time I start this book, I tell myself, 'okay I'm not going to stay up to 3am to finish it'. It never eventuates. Great review, I think you captured the essence of the book really well :). I hope more people read it, and not just ignore because it's by Stephenie Meyer.
I first read this a few years ago and it is a really awesome book! I love the relationship between Wanda and Mel, and how she becomes like a second sister to Jamie :)
I think I'll re-read it again! I just remember that I hated it the first time I read it, right after it came out but a year later I gave it another go and I absolutely fell in love with it. No other book has ever done that. :) It's a really beautiful book.
This book has been on my shelf for ages and there was always some other book to read. But I really want to read it. Oh and actually it's been confirmed that there will be sequels coming out. The Seeker and The Soul were the name of the second and third book I think.
After I saw my cousin reading it, I checked it out from the library and really enjoyed it. You reviewed it very well, and I definitely second your recommendation :)
You did a great job on hitting all the important parts in explaining the plot! I feel the exact same way about this book, it's one of my all time favourites and I feel that that's true. I literally can't wait to reread it a third time before March 28th.. wow.
Your review really makes me want to read it again! I got it the day it came out and read it in a single night, that's how thrilling it was. But now it's been sitting in my bookshelf for some years and I think I might want to pick it up again now.
I'm so glad you uploaded this video! I've had The Host sat on my bedside table for about a month now, and it just intimidated me too much to read, but this video just persuaded me to pick it up right now and just read :3
I heard a lot of bad things about The Host when it first came out, but recently I've been hearing a lot more good things about the book so I think I will give the book a try.
Yep, I totally agree with you about the trilogy thing, today is so difficult to find a book that is only one (and has a good story, of course), not divided in three or four books that have no story at all. And trilogies always follow the same model (principally the love stories) and it's boring. I read this book about three years ago, I think, and I really loved it. Also, the movie is coming out on my birthday, March 29th :) What a gift! Love your videos
I loved The Host too (my only issues with it were the descriptions--and names--of the aliens/planets, and the medicine stuff; all of that seemed really weak but the rest was awesome). Stephenie Meyer said she always planned it as a trilogy (the next two being The Seeker and The Soul, and she said she has been writing those, just slowly). I like that it works as a stand alone, but I do hope she brings the sequels out soon because I'm curious about where she'll take it.
Thank you for saying that Stephenie Meyer is a good story writer! I can admit Twilight is bad but I really liked her story ideas. I would totally read a book about Jasper and Alice and I really liked the one about Edward. The way the Twilight books present the action isn't the greatest but if you talk about the ideas of the story they're actually pretty interesting. And I don't mean the love story.
Twilight wasn't that bad, I thought New Moon and Breaking Dawn were fabulously written...Enjoyed the love story as well. I did crave more action, Lol! Stephenie Meyers imagination is definitely unique...loved The Host and her short story about an angel.
I read this book my freshman year of high school and I'm so glad that I did! It was very refreshing to read a sci-fi novel that wasn't too over the top, yet also kept you curious about what was going to happen. The Host is a fantastic book and I was honestly impressed with Stephenie Meyer for writing such a phenomenal novel! Can't wait to reread it :) Great review!
I truly want to read this book now. It sounds so good. Might just click on the bookdepository link and click order.... turns out I'm great at spontaneous buying. Phenomenal review!! Cheers.
I loved this book so so much, I read it for the first time about two weeks ago. Since I finished it I've been having a book hangover and I just can't let it go, I honestly want to just pick it up and read it again.
Thank you for talking about this book. I LOVE it. It's one of my absolute favorites. It was one of those books where once I reached a certain point, I could NOT put it down. And the ending was one that felt so perfect - not happily ever after, but full and beautiful. Because so many of my friends are against Twilight they won't even give it a chance and I think they are missing out on a fantastic story.
Thanks for the review. I just picked this up at my local library's used media sale on Thursday, and I'm only about 70 pages in, so I'm glad this review was spoiler-free.
I love The Host and I have read it countless times. Thank you for the awesome review . And it's soo cool that you got to meet Stephenie Meyer :) I believe she really is a talented writer and I cant wait for the movie !
After watching this I kind of want to read The Host. My friend said she liked it and was so much better than Twilight but I brushed it off. Your review is really good!
I read the Host because I saw the movie trailer after your video about books to read before the movie comes out. I thought it was quite great and I'm looking forward to see how it looks movie :)
I read this book after seeing the trailer and your vid about books being made into movies(something like that?) convinced me to pick up the book and give Stephanie Meyer a shot. I was not disappointed. I love this book and the premise! It was such a refreshingly different storyline and more mature than the YA books which I am trying to move away from. Thank you for a great review :D
This is my favorite book and I read it after the movie because I like to compare. As always the book was way better but the movie is my favorite too. They could have added more in it. I wish I could have met Stephanie Meyer.
I never thought of the connection between the way Wanda views the humans and the way The Doctor views humans before! That's very insightful. I love love love this book and agree that people should definitely read this if they're planning on seeing the movie.
I read The Host after watching the movie trailer. I enjoyed it, found it very moving, but also found it very troubling. After all, what does it mean to a be a sympathetic character when your people are engaged in the systematic conquering and dominating of hundreds of other planets? How can you be a good person if your life depends on you stealing a body from someone else who didn't offer it willingly?
I've had this book sitting on my shelves for years! I must have bought it four years ago when I wanted to start reading in English and I bought it because it was the first one I found. Probably not the best decision, considering how big and intimidating it looked. I haven't tried to read it since then, but I think I'll give it another go now that the movie is coming out soon. Also, it's great to hear that you really like it. It makes me think that I'll probably like it too :)
I'm really glad that you did a review about this book. I always thought it would be a storyline like twilight, so basically without a storyline. But you discribed it so good and I really look forward to read this book right now. Thanks for mentioning this!
The Host is science fiction and Twilight was fantasy. If you read the synopsis on the back of the novel you could tell it was an entirely different premise. I wasn't sure I would enjoy it as much as Twilight at first, but was pleasantly mistaken. They both different yet beautiful stories!
Great review! You explained the story so clearly, and this video couldn't be uploaded at a better time. I was wondering today whether to buy this book or not, as I didn't really know what it was about. You have just persuaded me, great job :)
Books in England are a bit cheaper, around £7 or £8, but the main bookstore Waterstones usually has 3 for 2 deals and things so it's cheaper to buy in bulk :)
I read The Host and loved it, it's the only book that's ever made me cry. I notice you have Why We Broke Up on your bookshelf. Nice! I'm slightly in love with that book
She is supposed to be writing a sequel right now called The Seeker, and then later on a third book to finish the trilogy called The Soul. I would have been just fine with one book and I just hope the trilogy doesn't get worse with the books to come. (Being optimistic, that's me :)
This book was one of the first big books I read in French and let me tell you it wasn't an easy read. I did really enjoy the story though and how it changes your view of humans. I cannot wait for the movie! Also you are so lucky to have met Stephanie Meyers.
I've read this book SO many times over the years I've had it its ridiculous. If they ruin this book with the movie I will be very pissed. This was an excellent review by the way!
Did you read the Dutch or the English version? I wanna but it and read it but don't know in which language it would feel more realistic while reading. Cuz i do not really prefer reading Dutch books.
Hi I am 14 and interested in reading The Host, but I wanted to know whether you thought there were inappropriate scenes in this story and whether or not you think i would be a good read for a 14/15 year old. Thanks Lily
Your review made me really want to reread the book. I feel like I forgot the whole beginning and that I can only rememeber the ending. Thank you for reminding me of the awesomeness of this book
Hey Sanne! I'm not sure if you know, but in the newly released movie cover version of the book, Stephanie Meyer added in an epilogue sort of thing where you can read about Melanie waking up. It will be in the movie so you should definitely google it! :)
Have you read Shadows by Paula Weston. Its an Australian YA fantasy novel but like the host the main character is a little older and not in high school. I really loved it so I thought I would recommend it to you. Although be warned its only the first book in a series and the other books aren't out yet.
I loved this book! I've always fought the headwind of Twilight haters to convince people that this is really worth reading! I listened to the audiobook for my most recent read and it gave it an interesting perspective on the conversations between Mel and Wanda...
I absolutely love this book!! t is one of my favourites. and yes that rumour is true, stephanie meyer is writing a second book but it won't be out for a while since shes really busy with the host.
Stephenie Meyer should've gotten famous for the Host instead of infamous for Twilight.
Tru that!
She is famous for both! 💕 She is only infamous to the haters.

I loved the Twilight books and Host. It definitely is Stephenie Meyers style, it's obvious she wrote it. Talented writer!
literally a perfect book I fell in love with it when I read it. It's been some time maybe I should re-read

Ian😍 I don’t like the feeling when I finish the book, still not used to it😂😂😂urgh
💕👍
But seriously, I'm really happy for you that you finally got to meet Stephanie Meyer!
But that was a couple of year before the actions in the book, right?
I hardly took breaks for food when I read this book. I'm a slow reader, but I finished it in 4 days. Haven't read it since it came out - maybe I'll tackle it this summer...

Haha I posted almost every day in February, so I needed at bit of a break (and I'm applying for jobs, which is kind of a full-time job).

That is exactly what I did! I am so happy Stephenie Meyers brought her imagination to all us readers. I hope I get to meet her someday!
So true about the no judgement zone! I was surprised by how much I liked this book!
Did you know that there's gonna be two more books actually? The Seeker and The Soul. Look them up on GoodReads!
My friend has been so apprehensive about both this book and the movie, I'm going to send her this to convince her otherwise!
No reason for apprehension. Lol!
yes omg! it is in my top ten favourite books.. everyone should read this, its just so different
I read this book so long ago that I forgot why I loved it, I just remember that I did. Thank you for reminding me of a great book :)
Ahh cool! Hope you'll enjoy the movie too :)
Actually, in Goodreads it says that the Host is part of a trilogy. But, of course, Midnight Sun still appears as a book that was published, so...
I've just bought this book for the Kindle (I can't deal with lugging that thing around) and your review has made me even more excited to start it!
Well, if you're willing to watch a 20 minute video, because that's how long the footage for this video was.
I read the book when I was 13 and I loved it. You should read it.
I absolutely love your lipstick, what brand and color do you use?!
💕
I've read this book SO many times over the years I've had it its ridiculous. If they ruin this book with the movie I will be very pissed. This was an excellent review by the way!
Did you read the Dutch or the English version? I wanna but it and read it but don't know in which language it would feel more realistic while reading. Cuz i do not really prefer reading Dutch books.
Hi
I am 14 and interested in reading The Host, but I wanted to know whether you thought there were inappropriate scenes in this story and whether or not you think i would be a good read for a 14/15 year old.
Thanks
Lily
Your review made me really want to reread the book. I feel like I forgot the whole beginning and that I can only rememeber the ending. Thank you for reminding me of the awesomeness of this book
Hey Sanne! I'm not sure if you know, but in the newly released movie cover version of the book, Stephanie Meyer added in an epilogue sort of thing where you can read about Melanie waking up. It will be in the movie so you should definitely google it! :)
Wow this sounds great and it's in my TBR for this month. Can't wait to read it
Have you read Shadows by Paula Weston.
Sounds great. I can't wait to read it.
Yea I'm not sure if Iike the idea of a sequel either... We shall see
I read it ages ago, and I loved it, and I'm rereading it before the film comes out but the start is quite slow, so I'm finding it a bit difficult
I absolutely love this book!! t is one of my favourites. and yes that rumour is true, stephanie meyer is writing a second book but it won't be out for a while since shes really busy with the host.
