I have wanted a Speedmaster ever since I followed the space race as a child. I watched Armstrong step down onto the surface of the moon when I was in high school. I almost bought one when I was working in Hong Kong in 1990, but my son was just born and I couldn’t spend the money. Today I am celebrating my 70th birthday, and my son gave me a large box for my birthday. He said: “here, I wrapped it myself”. When I opened it I found a new Speedmaster Moonwatch. Thank you, son!
A pops serving his fam before himself? Well-deserved, sir. And a belated Happy Birthday indeed Edit: Oh, and you knew it was serious when a man says he wrapped the gift himself 😂
You are lucky sir. Well done. My father wore a Mido Multifort which was stolen from him in arm robbery. He never wore another watch. I think I'm going to get him a replacement even though he has dementia now. As for myself, I splurged on a Speedmaster (coax) when I graduated from college two years late. I paid my own tuition for the 5 of 6 six years. My folks paid for the first year. I graudated with little if any debt. I had two jobs one that paid well as a ballroom waiter for a 5 star hotel in the booming 90s. I made $400 a day on weekends but it was 10 am to 1 am Sat and Sunday no sitting down. I was already buying stock as my father was a stock broker in his youth before moving to a different field. I had a huge interest in buying tech stocks so every major purchase I thought about the oppourtunity cost of buying a watch, car, etc. vs. buying stock in Amazon, Google, Apple, etc. Facebook and Netflix came just a few years later. Well after buying that Speedmaster that I paid $1,000 USD for in 1997, which I even wore to my graduation and I can see in the photos I still have with my folks, I decided it was an irresponsible luxury and went back to the department store which I think was Fortunoff back then. I returned the watch, the manager was furious and offered a discount but I wanted the cash. I bought Amazon stock, $5k total and another $5k borrowed on margin. I sold the shares after it tripled which was a fortune for me. But of course I was a fool as those shares would now be worth roughly $3 million USD. A few years later I bought a second hand Rolex sub from a coworker for $3,500 USD. Same thing I sold it to buy stock which I held onto that time. Buying these expensive watches before you have $100k in the bank is staggeringly foolish.
I have owned a Speedmaster since 1974 (which I guess makes it a cal. 861), and you might enjoy the story of how I got it. I was a commercial photographer in Copenhagen and one of my clients was the Danish Omega distributor J.C. Filtenborg. However, despite watch photography being a speciality of mine (and I come from a family of watch makers), I did not wear one because leather straps have always reacted unpleasantly with my skin and I had at the time not found a metal strap that didn’t bother me. I had been using pocket watches, but given up on those too. This became awkward at a time when Polaroid film was starting to be used in commercial photography for test shots and on-site client approval. The real exposures were on film, of course, and had to be processed before the client could see them. But Polaroid, especially in colour, had to be timed quite accurately in order to serve as a reliable test shot, so I became notorious on shoots for always asking someone else to time them for me. In the end my watch client got fed up and told me to go to the store room and pick out a watch - any watch, as long as it got me to wear one. The only watch in their collection that met my needs was the Moon Watch, but my client was true to his word and gave it to me. I wore it for more than 20 years, until I switched to a Breitling Aerospace which is titanium and therefore much lighter to wear, but I still cherish my Omega Moon Watch.
My 1969 Speedmaster Professional is in almost perfect condition. It runs around +6 seconds a day, for an 53 year old watch its insane. The quality is top notch!
The Porsche 911,the Trench Coat, the Mont Blanc Fountain Pen and the Omega Speedmaster defined the design of the 20th Century. And the Speedy is still going strong...
@@travr6 if the people buying them for $250 just held out a little longer they'd be able to get the other actual Moonwatch, the Bulova lunar pilot which goes for about 500. They're bringing out a refreshed one in April that trims it down to 43mm also. Much better than a Moonswatch imho.
I love the history of the Speedmaster. My dad bought a new one on December 26th, 1968...for $175! He must have been waiting to get some money for Christmas because he was in the store the next day (Sayerville Jewelers, in Sayerville NJ). I have that watch now, with original box and papers, on the original bracelet and it will be passed on to one of my kids when I'm no longer here.
The fact that the Apollo 13 astronauts would have been dead without the reliability and accuracy of the Speedmaster for their manual burn makes this the greatest. Tried and tested in a life-or-death situation in space. No other watch can lay claim to such a feat.
I knew nothing about watches but as a space exploration geek my wife thought it would be cool to gift me a Speedmaster so she only has herself to thank for sending me down the horology rabbit hole. I’ve owned many icons since but you always remember your first Love. The more I learned the more I appreciated what an amazing watch I had been given. I smile every time I throw it on.
I love, love my Omegas. But a far less expensive watch carries that special weight of being the only watch my mom gave me. You have both in one watch. That's wonderful.
This is the most important watch in my collection, mine came in the 1960’s NASA style trunk with aluminium catches. I wore it to Kennedy Space Centre just to give it a ‘home’ experience!
@@PKPhoenix83 - well done! Yes I believe they just come in a smaller box now. I remember buying it at Heathrow before a flight & the box was massive, filled up the overhead locker!!! Love the Velcro strap that was used in the Apollo missions just in case I ever find myself in a spacesuit!!! 😃👍🏻
Bought a moonwatch In December. It’s just as stunning the first day I bought. A timeless design, with the history to back it up. I think the moonwatch and the gmt master 2 are the 2 greatest watches of all time.
My father is a highly decorated US Army Aviator . I am a former stage 4 cancer patient . My elderly father took care of me while I was sick . Every CT scan , hospital stay , chemo session he was there for me . He has always wanted a speedmaster . I bought him one , sapphire sandwich with leather strap . It gets here next week can’t wait to give it to him . I’d be dead and never would of beat the cancer without him.
I can't explain how nice this watch is to wear. Timeless and versatile design, perfect weight, perfect thickness, the best and most comfortable bracelet I think I have ever worn. Just incredible.
FACTS!! I am a Space Coast Native and my grandfather worked at NASA with the Delta 2 program from 1960 to 1984, I have seen HUNDREDS OF LAUNCHES from my front yard, and this is my GRAIL WATCH, specifically the Professional Moonphase made in the 90s, the 3576.50 Sapphire Sandwich.
My Cl600 MB V12 makes every ride a joy , every time I have to go somewhere I get excited because I get to drive a World class symphony that does everything effortlessly and with such grace , a genuine real joy . Funny thing is that when not pushed it consumes the same as a Camry no jokes. If you can hold yourself that is .
I never thought anyone else would share the same thought about the moon watch being the greatest watch of all time. Thank you for presenting us with this incredible justification.
I love my 3861. It’s damn near the perfect watch. Incredible craftsmanship, beauty, unmatched history, and huge versatility. You can wear this watch with a t-shirt or a suit and anything in between an it still looks incredible.
Only complaints I have with my 3861 is the lack of adjustable clasp and the poor water resistance which stops it being a one watch for all occasions . Other than that , it’s near perfect.
Mine is the older 1863 version, but I always wear mine with a t-shirt. That's one of the things that made me want to get a speedmaster over some other high-end watch. It's elegant, I love looking at it, but it isn't open talk. It looks nice without being tacky and I know that it will hold up to everyday you
I purchased mine a year ago and love it. There is just something about the style l depth of the dial and details that I love. The new 3861 movement makes it a fantastic watch. I love the simplicity of the watch band without the polished links. It makes it so rugged looking. A beautiful designed watch.
I’m a watch enthusiast, love Omega, and love the idea of marking time or achievement with watches or clocks. I’ve always wanted to own an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch with a sapphire face. Not only because I consider it an absolutely iconic wristwatch and Omega’s best, but also because of my great interest in science and the space program. But I’ve held off now deliberately for the past 23 years. Why? I’m also a distance big distance runner, typically running around 30 races a year, including 3 full marathons each of those. From the start, my biggest goal has been to qualify for the Boston Marathon and run it. But after 61 marathons trying, over 23 years, I haven’t quite done it, coming as close as just 3 to 3 ½ minutes short. But my plan has always been that when I do, to immediately go out and buy this watch. I even check ahead before each marathon at the closest Omega boutique to be sure that it is in stock. Unfortunately over the years the price has gone up quite a bit (for me at least), and my career and the economy has floundered a little. But even if I need to go into a little more debt to make it happen, this is still my plan, and I can’t wait for that moment. The name itself will be literally symbolic of my achievement.
Your photography really demonstrates the quality architecture and finishing of this 3861 Caliber. I was enjoying wearing my new “Sapphire Sandwich” yesterday…
After years of yearning for this watch I finally bought it end of '21. Absolutely love it, it is so timeless! I went for the Sapphire sandwich with zero regrets. A must have for sure!
I’ve sold this watch for over 5 years and every time I do I always light up when someone puts it on for the first time. It’s a physical manifestation of achievement in people’s lives. So glad I’ve joined the club and got my own Speedy now 😌
I purchased this watch earlier this week from an AD on my birthday and also happened to be a tuesday! The watch is absolutely stunning and timeless. Wears like a dream on the wrist. I chose the sapphire version. The scratch resistance, applied logo and visible movement was a no brainer for me. A watch that can be appriciated for life. Worth every penny.
I actually own 4 OMEGA watches and the last was the Moonwatch. I got the 2019 Special Edition with the big box and accessories and it was worth it. I then realized it was one of the best buys I have ever made. It feels amazing
Agree completely. Bought my Speedmaster Profesional in 1983 at the Base Exchange at RAF UPPER HEYFORD for $375.00 US on sale. Was my every day watch for 35 years. Have since retired it, but still take it out once in a while, just because.
Bought one!! This my first ‘expensive’ watch. I don’t wear it every day but I take it out and look at it almost daily. It came down to the speedy and a spring drive. Love both but the speedy is much more fun to look at.
Love my MoonWatch. Among my watch collection, the MoonWatch is one of my favorites (I have the Manual Wind version and this creates such a connection with this watch, each time I wind it). Great Video!!
I remember the days of my youth when I hurried to the television and started watching the adverts on BBC 2. Just before Top Gear starts. The same when I woke up early to watch my cartoons, as a younger boy. That same feeling and emotion is felt as I watch your videos. Thank you!
I bought my Moonwatch today and couldn’t be happier. The purchase experience was far, far more pleasant than the one I’ve had with Rolex. Imagine walking into a boutique to spend hard earned money, without having to work to spend that money. You have to see this watch in person. In my view, the Moonwatch has more character and heritage than, dare I say, even my ND Submariner.
I bought a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch a few years ago, ashamedly as an "investment". The minute I got the watch & held it in my hands for the first time, I said "f3ck that" this is going on my wrist right now. I love this watch, moreso than the watches I'd always wanted to own when growing up. It knocked my Santos from its perch as the top dog, it also sent my Oyster Perpetual back in its box. I don't know why it's managed to do this but it just has. There's not a chance in hell I'll part with it anytime in the future unless it's for another Speedy.
A chronograph is a very useful tool to have on the wrist. Once you used its timing functions, it's hard to go back to wearing a regular time-only watch.
@@imlost19 I don't swim, and I think most people who buy dive watches are more into making a fashion statement rather than using it for its intended purpose. How many swimmers and divers actually need 300m water resistance? If I were to wear a watch with a rotating bezel, I would have choose a GMT watch with an extra 24-hour hand and a bi-directional bezel, it'smuch more practical for everyday use on solid land than a uni-directiopnal bezel dive watch.
I shall not come to you for investment advice 😂 Speedmaster is not an investment watch. It has strong residuals, but you aren’t going to see returns on it, so best just to wear it. The same goes for most watches, but what you like Abd wear the bugger!
I have this exact watch and it is….perfect 👌🏼 Omega got the look spot on first time and this new version has been tweaked in all the right places but looks almost identical to the original. Pure timeless class pure timeless classic 👌🏼
I bought mine a week ago (the sapphire sandwich version). I liked it even more after I had it sized and on wrist. As others have said, it's got such a classical design and very versatile in that it goes with anything. This is my second Omega after buying a Seamaster 300m a couple of years ago. But I am now partial to the Speedy!
I bought my Omega Moon watch 3 years ago. I couldn’t afford a new one so I bought a very good, extremely well looked after 2005 model from Japan. Absolutely stunning watch to wear & look at! It was my grail watch & forever will be!
I have many watches, but my 1861 was the first expensive (for me) watch that I bought. I've since bought others but this is the one I go back to most often to wear. It's the one that definitely won't leave the collection. When I bought it I bought from an Omega boutique to get the full experience. Such an icon!
Love my Moonwatch (with Hesalite crystal), I treated myself five years ago when I got a promotion at work, and I've worn it regularly ever since. It still makes me smile every time I look at it. There are many great watches, but for me, the Moonwatch is the GOAT.
There are other great watches out there that can round out the top 5 or 10 but the Speedmaster is too iconic and checks too many boxes to be anything other than number 1 of all time. Thank you for this and I hope everyone is enjoying their Speedies in good health!
I was on the fence between the Breitling Navi-TimerSpeed Master Professional. After comparing both, no contest, the Moon Watch won hands down. I like everything about this Icon of the industry, but more importantly, I find having a tactile representation of an instrument associated with Mankind’s greatest achievement right there on my wrist is priceless. I used to own a Rolex GMT Master II, and I really enjoyed that watch, but the pedigree of this watch just blows my old Rolex out of the water.
I found the complete opposite. I'm a huge Omega fan, have 2 at the moment and have owned others, but the Navitimer feels and looks two leagues above the Moonwatch. The Navitimer is also the iconic chronograph, not the Moonswatch.
@@AZadeh-nd8vx I am in the same boat. Not only their finish is immaculate, I could not find any slightest flaws in their B01 movement whereas I did from my Sub and Speedy.
Same here went to the Omega Boutique and then the Breitling. The Navi just feels so much more like a luxury piece than the Speedy. I like the Speedy but the Navi is just awesome in every regard.
Considering getting one myself and am fairly confident I can get it at a good chunk below list. Thing is I've got a Breitling itch I've needed to scratch for many years and I really love some of the current Chronomat B01's out there 🤔 alas I'm not flush enough to afford both so I'm stuck in horological limbo!
I love the history of Omega and the Speedmaster series. When it came down to buying my first Omega though, I had to go with the Speedmaster ‘57 with the automatic movement. They are substantially more (around $9k USD) but I like the dial and bracelet a lot more than the Professional. I’m also an Auto kind of guy. I recently acquired a Seamaster Aqua Terra on a rubber strap for a casual knock about but it shares equal time on my wrist with the Speedy. When you visit an Omega Boutique you are treated in such a wonderful manner by people who love the brand as much as you do. There’s no Rolex or AP games. If it’s in the case, it’s in stock for sale that day. I spent a few hours there last time when getting the Aqua Terra and could have spent even longer. I can’t say enough positive things about the Omega customer experience.
My wife agreed to donate to (and allow) my Speedy Pro fund as a wedding gift. I went with the 3861 Sapphire Sandwhich. I have worn it every single day since I picked it up from the dealer, and it really is the perfect piece. A few extra strap options, and it can do basically anything, sans swimming. I love the manual wind. I would be disappointing if I woke up in the morning and didn't get to fiddle with it because an automatic movement had done my job for me in the middle of the night while I was tossing and turning. This thing will never leave my wrist.
It really is the most amazing watch out there. Not only does it have all those qualities that you pointed out, but it also; looks amazing without being gaudy, is a large and 'modern' size yet still manages to look great on any size wrist, and it's something you can wear without worrying that someone will cut off your wrists to take from you.
Thanks for sharing your insights into Omega's history and the Speedmaster, as always masterfully told. And it was extremely gratifying to hear you refer to Destin's Smarter Every Day series of videos on the lunar missions. As I noted in your other AMW video posted today, it seems the love of all things engineering and mechanical and science and space is what brings us enthusiasts together. Sure a smartwatch can do a hundred things and never lose accuracy, but it just would never have the pull, the romance, the sheer elegance and emotions we techno/engineering/science geeks derive from finely made watches (even quartz watches).
The moon watch was the first watch that struck me as a cut above the rest in a watchmakers shop window as a kid in the late 70s. It looked like a big professional instrument but Strangely familiar. Then found out some years later this was the very watch I saw on Buzz Aldrins space suit in the 1969 moon landing just a few weeks after my 5th birthday that year. I think many of my generation have a strong subconscious link and memory to this watch, even amongst those who are not aware and don’t care. The power of subliminal product placement and marketing must never be underestimated.
Two decades ago, I met Dr. Buzz Aldrin at a party in Beverly Hills. I recognized him instantly, and it seemed that nobody else noticed him! I spoke well over an hour with a true hero, and I forgot to ask him about his watch. Oh well. You don't get too much opportunity to speak privately with the second man on the moon.
Superb video as always! I struck up a conversation with a gentleman last year who noticed my Speedmaster. He was also wearing a Speedy and was curious as to why a younger guy would pick a Speedmaster over other watches. I told him about my love for NASA and Apollo, and he immediately understood. He then told me about how his Speedmaster was a gift from his old poker buddy Buzz. Yes, that Buzz. He told me lots of great stories about hanging out with Buzz and how he's the real deal. Speedmaster owners tend to be the most interesting watch enthusiasts I meet.
An articulate ode to an extraordinary watch. While other watches shout and flash, the Speedy just gets on quietly, confident in its ability. Nothing to prove. While the obvious competition has come and gone from my collection, the Speedy stays. True keeper.
I'm convinced! The moonwatch has been high on my highly desired list since.... well as long as I have known it existed, but I didn't think I had to get one but now I know I do and reminded why I have always wanted one. The history, the pedigree, the quality. 😍
Agreed this is the best watch ever made. It’s not just about Omega’s accomplishments though. It’s for so many reasons. It’s symmetry, versatility with straps, wearability, it’s aesthetic. The Speedy pro gets so much right in my books. My favourite watch. 🍻
Andrew - thanks for the re-re-re-re-review. It's as-always, well written and on-point. I physically watched Armstrong step out on to the surface of the moon as a wide-eyed seven year old, and that event, along with all of the Apollo and preceding space programs Mercury and Gemini changed the course of my life and set of interests forever. I've always yearned for a Speedmaster Professional, and last year after one of your reviews I actually went and bought a Heselite version of the 3861 to stay as close to the original as possible. I love the Heselite's distortions and although I've already scratched it up, they're all MY scratches and it looks like the daily wearer that it should. The case and bracelet, in contrast, haven't seen a mark. It has character and shows that it's worn to be used and loved. The solid caseback with the proper hippocampus and moon-related script is so more desirable tome than the sapphire version. It's been an absolutely wonderful experience for me, and along with the tech I have that history on my wrist with me every day now. It's reliable to less than +two seconds irrespective of what I'm doing each day, and as such I flatly refuse to ever sell it now. Grail watch? Admittedly, yes. Worthy of that? Hell yes.
I love the solid caseback too... Much more than the see thru caseback. Just in case you don't like to polish out the scratches... There are super thin 0.1mm self healing soft TPU film nowadays. Invisible and easy to apply. Best regards
My most expensive watch. I wanted to treat myself after the birth of my daughter (after all that hard work I did!) and had essentially narrowed it down to the Speedy and the El Primiero. As much as to this day I still want an El Primiero, the speedy just hits different... more humble, less flashy, with higher legibility. A watch that can be worn casually or dressed up... it's surprisingly versatile. I didn't get that vibe with the El primiero. Then I did the "wrong" thing and got the sapphire sandwich. I don't care about the "authenticity" aspect... I'm not going to the moon anytime soon. As you've seen from this video the movement is unrivalled at this price point. I need to be able to look at it. And still do this day, everytime I wear it 3 years later.
Same, mine was my daughter's birth watch (and my most expensive to date). I initially wanted it to be a Rolex Explorer, but impossible to get, even STILL!. As soon as I saw the announcement of the new Speedmaster, I HAD to have it - that tapered bracelet - YES. Called my OB and they put me on the list to get one, and when they called, I was the first to get the Hesalite but not the first for the Saphire, apparently, the three they got initially were pre-sold instantly before arriving. I also really like and want an El Primero, technically I would probably get along better with the 38mm sizing, but the Speedmaster wears more like a 40mm at least. I will never sell it and will cherish it forever due to the connection of the birth of my daughter (which I wore witnessing her birth).
I totally agree. It was my first luxury watch bought last year and it will most likely be my last but even if I am lucky enough to be able to buy another or more luxury watches the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch will always be my favourite and the greatest 😊
What i love about the Speedmaster is, there is no real barrier to entry. No its not cheap, but its is achievable and once you can afford it. Its yours. This watch also transcends social classes, you could be a billionaire, royalty or slogging it out day to day and this watch will not look out of place. Its a true icon
This watch is definitely a grail for me. Part of my collection is dedicated to space watches. From Yuri Gagarin's 33mm Sturmanskie to the Bulova Lunar Pilot; the 2nd watch on the moon. There are still a few slots to fill. The Seiko Pogue, Bulova Astronaut, Breitling Cosmonaut, Sin 140/142 St and the Fortis Cosmonaut. And yet there's only one watch that took that "one small step for man.." on Buzz Aldrin's wrist.
Maybe you would also like the Casio DW5600E? It can be had for around $45 on Amazon. It's flight certified by NASA and astronauts have regularly used it for a long time.
@@notDonaldFagen I don't think it's been confirmed, but the story goes that Neil left his Speedmaster in the lunar module because of a malfunctioning clock.
Is amazingly hard to quantify “the best.” But if one could measure how many people loved this watch- it would show it is the most loved. And that is why I believe this title. 👍
Also great… Timeless looks. 1957 continues to look fantastic in 2023. That’s hard to do and speaks to Omegas design capabilities. The watch is a total strap monster. Seriously, it’s the only watch on the market that looks great with EVERY strap you throw at it. Such a rarity in watches I love my 3570.50 :)
Avril high-end watches a couple of Rolex watches and as well as a couple Seamaster omega watches and I own one speed master. I have always gotten more comments and compliments on the Speedmaster than any other watch. Ironically in general I get way more comments on my omega watches because I think people assume Rolexes are just fake. Anyway, I highly recommend Speedmaster it’s just a beautiful piece of art.
Love the speedie!! Have a 1966 with the 321 in it. I believe I’m going to get a 3861 for a daily. It checks all the boxes. Aesthetics, mechanics, history of the brand, history of the watch, coaxial, accuracy, price … I could go on. So, why is the speedmaster the best? All I can say, is this, for those who know no explanation is necessary, for those who don’t none will suffice.
I wholeheartedly agree with you on this one! Amongst "completely" mechanical watches Omega ranks number one in my opinion when it comes to timekeeping accuracy. My favorite watch is my old Citizen Blue Angels Eco drive with atomic timing. It is always accurate wear it and forget it. I always yearned for an automatic, but I always knew that they weren't going to be quite as accurate. There are so many experts online testing watches and making reviews. I wanted something more luxurious this time around. For months I researched Tag Heur, Tissot, Rolex, Breitling, Omega, Grand Seiko, and several other watches before coming to a decision. I purchased the Omega Speedmaster Racing and I'm very satisfied with it. The others are all great watches but the reviews of the design, history, precision, quality, attention to detail and timekeeping accuracy this was well worth the price! 😊
I agree that this is a truly great watch. I own a pre- moon 105.012-63 with the original bracelet. My research shows it was manufactured in the 2nd half of the first year of production and that it is the model that Armstrong used for the moon landing.
Out of all the watches I own, the basic Speedmaster Moon watch 3861 is probably the most accurate, durable, and easiest to read. Every time I wear it I’m amazed by how good it is. I almost feel guilty ignoring some of my more expensive and harder to get watches.
One of Watchfinder's greatest videos. Indeed the Speedmaster may be the greatest watch ever made. And amazingly, you can buy one today at a sensible price without all the overpriced bs and hyperbole that surrounds the main opposition.
Love my Speedy. Almost sold it last year because I wasn’t wearing it enough. Then I saw what I was being offered, what I paid for it in 2021 and what it’s selling for NOW. Needless to say, it’s on my wrist a lot more. Great video!
Agreed. I sometimes find myself torn between my Omega Moonwatch and Longines Master Collection Chronograph Moonphase. Both are absolutely beautiful and incredible value. Highly recommend the Longines for anyone wanting an elegant nice piece without breaking the bank
Longines are so underappreciated. They are great innovator and have made great reliable watches over the years. Love their chronographs and the Legend Diver watch.
Totally agree well I said, I adore my longine Retro grade from the master collection, I am lucky enough to have a few beautiful watches in my collection, the retro grade was the first real Swiss watch I bought and it's truly beautiful and worn far more than any of my other more expensive watches ..
I bought a limited edition Tokyo Olympics 2020 Speedmaster, importing it from Japan. The games were of course deferred to 2021. It was still boxed, original price tag attached, amazing presentation white wooden box. I spent weeks researching it and even with import tax, it cost less than similar used mint versions available in Europe. I think it's a stunning watch.
Totally agree. I’ve had my Speedy 1861 for 15 years and since bought an IWC BPW and a Breitling SOH but still love the Speedy because of its classic look and heritage.
Your presentation, and historical summary of this watch, is very good. I opted for the Speedmaster FOIS, to me, it was more historically significant, as it wasn't even a watch ,that was " certified" for its latter , legendary missions, as the Speedmaster evolved.
At 90's ''Apollo 13'' was the movie and this timepiece was the reward for 1 lucky customer at cinemas in Turkey. Don't know who was that lucky one but what I know is I am in love with this masterpiece at the first time I saw it and still growing in me.
I love my Speedmaster so much. (An 861 from 1970, with a tropical brown dial and ghosted grey bezel). After I got it (9 years ago) I ended up selling the rest of my vintage collection… it’s really the only watch I’ve ever wanted to wear since. Comfy, cool and awesome.
I bought mine on a cruise whilst celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary it had to be a manual with heselite . I’ve had the watch since 2017 and will never sell it, it means a great deal to me and I wear it a lot.
I’ve had my Speedmaster for over 10 years now and I still catch myself staring at it when I wear it. It’s one of the linchpins of my collection and is truly a fantastic watch, not least for its accomplishments, but also for its incredibly coherent, legible, and beautiful design.
As I am deciding on my first luxury watch, I can’t help but come back to my first choice when I didn’t know anything about watches: the speedy pro. I am a historian, and it’s the story that drew me to the moon watch in the first place. It still does. Currently, I am choosing between it and the Dornbluth. Torn between mass made and micro.
This is THE best watch video ever. Ive stood on Launch Pad 39a, the history is palpable and humbling. Knowing this watch was an important part of it must be so satisfying for owners of the Speedmaster. Great job Andrew.
For anyone really interested in Apollo 11, "First Man" starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong really helps you understand just how Incredible that mission was; the sacrifices made in order for us to reach the moon and how relatively primitive the technology was that got us there. One of the most underrated films of the past decade for me.
First Man was largely kicked to the curb because of woke ideologies. It was very unfortunate that the producers chose to disregard Apollo 11's accomplishments achieved by the United States. It was a US accomplishment not of the world. It should have been a movie to celebrate the United States' achievement.
Great video. I love my speedy, I have a caliber 1861 and it is excellent. The story behind these and the testing involved in the flight certification is amazing. I actually sought out an 1861 solely because it is much closer to the original 321. Also the caliber 861 actually flew on the later Apollo missions as well as the shuttle missions. The 1861 is the exact same movement just rhodium plated. I wanted that lineage. I am on the list for a Pepsi GMT now but I have to say my moonwatch is just better...
I am so happy that I bought my Speedy in 2017 with the long lyre lugs (much nicer) and the more "original" 1861 movement. It comes with the big presentation box including a Nato strap, a bracelet and a tool to exchange the straps. The whole thing cost me 3200€ with is about half the price of today. The recent version looks a bit like a "replica watch" that did not stand on its own but is full of quotations of the old watches. It looks a little like a "new old stock" franken watch to me...
I was not expecting to see a shoutout to Smarter Everyday. I have been watching Destin's channel for years now. The Omega Moonwatch is one of my favorite watches.
I’m glad to see you made this video considering that not that long ago you listed it as one of the most OVERRATED watches. The speedy has been and will always remain a classic and in my opinion the best chronograph watch made especially for the price point !
I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.
I totally agree. This watch screams classic design and versatility to me. You can wear it in any occasion or wear it everyday. I just hope Omega doesn't realize it and start doing what Rolex is doing and start being exclusive. Great video as always Andrew! Hope all is well!
Your sentiment was the same reasoning I used to purchase my 3861 calibre solid back, hesalite glass in June 2022 It is not only an incredible price for the level of engineering / craftsmanship but to be able to own an elegant piece of history
I settled on the 3861 sapphire sandwich as my college graduation gift to myself. Couldn’t be happier. This will be passed down to my future kids and I will wear this my entire life.
The 3861 sapphire (the one in this video) is not £5700. It's £6800. Probably be more than £7000 after the impending Feb price increase. Still the greatest value for money.
Yes that price is out of date, the hesalite was £5700 some months ago but now RRP is £6000 and my Omega AD told me in Feb 23 prices go up around 7%. They already had the new tickets in to put out! If you want one buy now or yesterday...
@@scrikingbobs6336 nice mate enjoy it! I went for the Hesalite late 2021 and it remains my number one. I got an Aqua Terra last weekend before the impending price rises but it doesnt have the 'magic' of the moonwatch. Speedy is king imo.
Completely agree - for all the reasons you mention and the overall aesthetic. IMHO, the layout and proportions of the face and case are the best of any watch, anywhere - it is a *perfectly* balanced and proportioned watch face. Then, matched with a beautifully finished case and bracelet, display back (sapphire sandwich), amazing 3861 movement, affordable and available, and complements a sharp suit or jacket as easily as jeans and a t-shirt. No contest.

Your videos are SO amazing - I mean this with all due respect - your audio sounds very low quality and really makes it harder to enjoy the content. Try to resolve that!
And a belated Happy Birthday indeed
Edit: Oh, and you knew it was serious when a man says he wrapped the gift himself 😂
Well deserved sir. Enjoy!
Congrats to you sir what a wonderful story ❤️
I was a young engineer on the launch team for Apollo 11 at Kennedy. My son gave me a Moonwatch recently for my 80th birthday. I love it.
I’m very happy for you and thank you for making the mission possible.
Thank you for your contribution to one of our nation's great achievements
What lenses did you use during that period?
Good story, thanks for posting :)
Wow, cool to hear how Polaroid was used in professional photography!
I bought my Speedmaster in 1973. Still have it, still going strong and is worn on special occasions. Love it. But, I might sell it one day!
Didn't know one comment was so capable of name-dropping and self -aggrandizement. Bravo.
My 1969 Speedmaster Professional is in almost perfect condition. It runs around +6 seconds a day, for an 53 year old watch its insane. The quality is top notch!
That’s awesome
Amazing. That watch is worth a pretty penny!
How many times have you needed to service it since then?
The Porsche 911,the Trench Coat, the Mont Blanc Fountain Pen and the Omega Speedmaster defined the design of the 20th Century. And the Speedy is still going strong...
You forget the Leica ;-)
Fender Stratocaster
RayBan Wayfarer
Ankle warmers
Someone beat me to saying the Stratocaster
It's INSANE that you can walk into a boutique or AD and buy one of these right now or online, but a moonswatch is impossible to get.
To be fair... one is $8000 and the other is $250.
Alot less people buying the original
@@travr6 if the people buying them for $250 just held out a little longer they'd be able to get the other actual Moonwatch, the Bulova lunar pilot which goes for about 500. They're bringing out a refreshed one in April that trims it down to 43mm also. Much better than a Moonswatch imho.
@@DarrenBates, Great Point Darren. Also the Omega is the Only Watch that did Malfunction up there. That we know off, i think..!😎🙏
I had no issues getting my Mission to Mercury. I just went into the store at Times Square at 10:30am on NYE and picked one up.
@@Sams911 Ed White is White gold ? Why such a long wait for this ? What’s the difference than 3861?
Until you see American Moon, 2017.
I have the new sapphire sandwich but man the moon story is all bullshit. Nobody went there.

That is the equation. If it brings a smile to your face, you have reached watch nirvana.
This is the most important watch in my collection, mine came in the 1960’s NASA style trunk with aluminium catches. I wore it to Kennedy Space Centre just to give it a ‘home’ experience!
Mine too. Last one at the store before they sold the updated version that comes with no extras.
@@itsallgonemad Best part is the one we own was a few hundred cheaper.
Did he like it?
Thoughts and prayers 🙏
you are a very blessed man.
I can't explain how nice this watch is to wear. Timeless and versatile design, perfect weight, perfect thickness, the best and most comfortable bracelet I think I have ever worn. Just incredible.
Most comfortable watch I own
Yes! Manually wound chronographs and V12s are beautiful artistic anachronisms the world needs.
While this world is a bit crazy currently, those thoughts may help to balance. Thank you!
Until you have to get it fixed and get a £600 bill.
Couldn't agree more. I have an AM Vanquish v12, and just purchased a 3861 Speedmaster. Both Iconic masterpieces.
I never thought anyone else would share the same thought about the moon watch being the greatest watch of all time. Thank you for presenting us with this incredible justification.
I always second guess myself when I make an expensive purchase (anything over $500). I was perfectly happy and relaxed when I got my Speedy.
You can put on it any strap any it will look awesome.
Omega recently updated the clasp and gave it micro adjustment.
Keep working hard bro, u'll achieve them in no time, rock on 👊
Your photography really demonstrates the quality architecture and finishing of this 3861 Caliber.
Really wish they had those boxes when I got mine in 2005! We got the red pleather. :/
Agree completely. Bought my Speedmaster Profesional in 1983 at the Base Exchange at RAF UPPER HEYFORD for $375.00 US on sale. Was my every day watch for 35 years. Have since retired it, but still take it out once in a while, just because.
I remember using the bowling alley at UH, us Brits were allowed in, you wouldn’t recognise the place now!
Bought one!! This my first ‘expensive’ watch. I don’t wear it every day but I take it out and look at it almost daily. It came down to the speedy and a spring drive. Love both but the speedy is much more fun to look at.
Seiko and the spring drive, indeed, would be my second pick.
It gets so much just right. That dial finds a perfect balance of detail and cleanliness.
Love my MoonWatch. Among my watch collection, the MoonWatch is one of my favorites (I have the Manual Wind version and this creates such a connection with this watch, each time I wind it). Great Video!!
I find myself winding my automatic watches for just that reason.

Congrats 🚀
Well done - I love my speedy !
Got mine yesterday. The sapphire sandwich is a marvel. Best bracelet ever.... pics and videos do not do justice to the actual time piece.
@@maverick_supernova Congrats!
Yes agree thanks for the review.
@@msbrownbeast imo a dive bezel is more useful for every day and the lack of a date on the moonwatch is a damper too
I don't know where you got the notion that is an investment
@@imlost19 I don't swim, and I think most people who buy dive watches are more into making a fashion statement rather than using it for its intended purpose. How many swimmers and divers actually need 300m water resistance? If I were to wear a watch with a rotating bezel, I would have choose a GMT watch with an extra 24-hour hand and a bi-directional bezel, it'smuch more practical for everyday use on solid land than a uni-directiopnal bezel dive watch.
I shall not come to you for investment advice 😂
Speedmaster is not an investment watch. It has strong residuals, but you aren’t going to see returns on it, so best just to wear it. The same goes for most watches, but what you like Abd wear the bugger!
I resisted until finally buying one in 2022. It deserves all the praise. And your video quality is amazing.
I have this exact watch and it is….perfect 👌🏼 Omega got the look spot on first time and this new version has been tweaked in all the right places but looks almost identical to the original. Pure timeless class pure timeless classic 👌🏼
The difference the stepped dial makes is incredible.
@@smokeybear69 yes...the stepped dial gives it so much depth love it!
The Navitimer is also the iconic chronograph, not the Moonswatch.
ok
@@AZadeh-nd8vx I am in the same boat. Not only their finish is immaculate, I could not find any slightest flaws in their B01 movement whereas I did from my Sub and Speedy.
Same here went to the Omega Boutique and then the Breitling. The Navi just feels so much more like a luxury piece than the Speedy. I like the Speedy but the Navi is just awesome in every regard.
Navitimer dial is way too busy to read at a glance.
That movement is simply gorgeous. Those shots of the movement are incredible.
Added the Moonwatch to my collection two weeks ago, so happy I did.
Bought it 4 days ago... what a time for this video to show up🫡😍
Considering getting one myself and am fairly confident I can get it at a good chunk below list. Thing is I've got a Breitling itch I've needed to scratch for many years and I really love some of the current Chronomat B01's out there 🤔 alas I'm not flush enough to afford both so I'm stuck in horological limbo!
after watching this video a while back, it became my dream and favorite watch, nothing has changed
I'll be treating myself to one when I finish my military career. A piece of history that will always be relevant.
I agree. It is a nice experience and the people are very enthusiastic.
No games, just a pure experience
My two favorite watches are the Moonwatch and the Seamaster. Would love to own both. Someday…
Which specific one if you don't mind me asking mate, as there are plenty of numerous Seamaster models out there?
Humbled to just be getting into watches and I bought both of these…. May not need another watch ever
I left my ex so I could afford one ….. different strokes…. Lmao love your explanation of the automatic movement vs manual 😂 so poetic, yet accuracy
The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch 42mm in white gold with the white dial is exquisite ❤
They are beautiful…I absolutely love manual wind too
Thanks for sharing your insights into Omega's history and the Speedmaster, as always masterfully told.
Very well put!
And still do this day, everytime I wear it 3 years later.
learn how to spell it 😎 -- zenith el primero
And which watch did you get for the mother of your daughter?😉
Congrats and great call, agree completely and also went sapphire sandwich for the same reason.
Those snobs who call the sapphire version “wrong” somehow shut up about the Speedmaster 321.
Since I got mine, it has dethroned the Submariner as a daily wear, mostly because of how comfortable the bracelet is
review soon?
Even after 30 years of owning a Speedmaster I love it and wearing it
Andrew - I am buying it tomorrow! You pushed me over the edge. Thank you!
Correct! It's worn from Blue collar workers to royalties 🎉❤
I thought Buzz left his in the capsule when he stepped out? Or maybe that was Neil.
@@notDonaldFagen I don't think it's been confirmed, but the story goes that Neil left his Speedmaster in the lunar module because of a malfunctioning clock.
How about a Hamilton ‘murph’ featured in interstellar.
Is amazingly hard to quantify “the best.”
But if one could measure how many people loved this watch- it would show it is the most loved.
And that is why I believe this title. 👍
Also great…
Timeless looks. 1957 continues to look fantastic in 2023. That’s hard to do and speaks to Omegas design capabilities.
The watch is a total strap monster. Seriously, it’s the only watch on the market that looks great with EVERY strap you throw at it. Such a rarity in watches
I love my 3570.50 :)
Even if i have to finance it, I will own this watch one day. But once I do, I'll have to figure out who to bequeath it to when I pass ...
Get it man. You deserve it.
The most marvelous fact about all of this is how little Omega actually had to do with all this moon business in reality.
The Longines is my favorite value complicated watch.
I think that's going be my next watch after the speedy 9 months ago, one watch a year haha is ny plain
FACTS!! That Longines is a Masterpiece, both timepieces are mechanical art.
Agree. I’d only sell mine to buy a newer one. Would not go without one in my collection.
I too have a fois- don’t think I’ll ever let it go
At 90's ''Apollo 13'' was the movie and this timepiece was the reward for 1 lucky customer at cinemas in Turkey.
Completely agree. That's my grail! The ultimate goal. To own a Moonwatch.
😂😂😂😂😂
I would say that is a rather easy one. Just buy it. 😂
@@Rabauke2.0 easy if he has the means, impossible if not.
@@bigupthebeast why are you laughing? Grow up.
I hope you get your moonwatch one day!
I’ve had my Speedmaster for over 10 years now and I still catch myself staring at it when I wear it. It’s one of the linchpins of my collection and is truly a fantastic watch, not least for its accomplishments, but also for its incredibly coherent, legible, and beautiful design.
Timeless beauty without being gawdy , tacky or flashy.
I’d always start with a seamaster if thinking of making a collection
This is THE best watch video ever. Ive stood on Launch Pad 39a, the history is palpable and humbling. Knowing this watch was an important part of it must be so satisfying for owners of the Speedmaster. Great job Andrew.
For anyone really interested in Apollo 11, "First Man" starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong really helps you understand just how Incredible that mission was; the sacrifices made in order for us to reach the moon and how relatively primitive the technology was that got us there. One of the most underrated films of the past decade for me.
That is a good film. There is another low budget film , about Tesla with Ethan Hawk as Tesla, greatly underrated as well.
First Man was largely kicked to the curb because of woke ideologies. It was very unfortunate that the producers chose to disregard Apollo 11's accomplishments achieved by the United States. It was a US accomplishment not of the world. It should have been a movie to celebrate the United States' achievement.
I agree, incredible film.
I think the Speedmaster is my favourite watch in my collection. It’s handsome simplicity is beguiling and the story behind it enchanting. I love it
Great video.
Cal. 1861 Is a great movement with its own space heritage!
Omega is being noticed for the spirate movement and the Super Racing. WF is a business under the Richemont umbrella, after all.
Your sentiment was the same reasoning I used to purchase my 3861 calibre solid back, hesalite glass in June 2022
It is not only an incredible price for the level of engineering / craftsmanship but to be able to own an elegant piece of history
This is 1 of the few watches in my dream collection. I can't wait for the day I get to own it.
I settled on the 3861 sapphire sandwich as my college graduation gift to myself. Couldn’t be happier. This will be passed down to my future kids and I will wear this my entire life.
You and me both - cheers
The 3861 sapphire (the one in this video) is not £5700. It's £6800. Probably be more than £7000 after the impending Feb price increase. Still the greatest value for money.
Yes that price is out of date, the hesalite was £5700 some months ago but now RRP is £6000 and my Omega AD told me in Feb 23 prices go up around 7%. They already had the new tickets in to put out! If you want one buy now or yesterday...
@@keheaven bought my sapphire sandwich 3861 two weeks ago. I love it.
@@scrikingbobs6336 nice mate enjoy it! I went for the Hesalite late 2021 and it remains my number one. I got an Aqua Terra last weekend before the impending price rises but it doesnt have the 'magic' of the moonwatch. Speedy is king imo.
Sapphire Version at the moment in Austria for 8.600€ stock price 🚀
Just Googled it and found the one with the clear back for 4200.
No contest.
Just an amazing creation… brilliant…
