"Disney is such a big company, they're very keen to have everything in the world". When this interview was recorded around 2007 he didn't know how right he was.
"All you ever see on the TV is cooking programmes" Heh. A culture a world apart with a very different set of ideas and values, but there's still no escape from TV chefs...
im a grown man who works full time as a mechanic in northern canada, and i feel that if i ever met this man in person i would break down into tears being graced with such a beautiful mind,
i love his rejection of the comparison with Disney and the company Disney, he is far more talented, his mind is immeasurably and intrinsically more creative and imaginative, he is far more open-minded, i don't know where to end when citing the superiority of this man and his work over anything Disney has ever attempted to create as well as over the man, Waltz Disney
Aram El Gamer Why would I wish that? Pluss Disney has on several occacions mentioned that Studio Ghibli was a huge inspiration to most of their work. Well atleast before the bandwagon of animations came along and weight out the fraction making it "most".
+Ree khaled Comparing Disney and Ghili seems very natural. But a direct comparison isn't really possible because the styles are very different. I prefer ignoring which is "better"; both has made some excellent films.
Miyazaki is a great admirer (and was a friend of) the late French artist Moebius. Azach was the comic that Miyazaki drew inspiration from. Moebius was also well known for his concept work for the films Alien and Tron.
Continue my comment XD- so many animators like myself, and his stories which are so diverse, and take on so many diferent issues and moments, and just the quality of the art. those amazing backgrounds from Kezuo Oga, my God what an amazing bg painter. And all the very talented animators in Studio Ghibli deserve some praise also, w/o em, we wouldn't see the life of these films. Over all, Disney and Ghible both have their inspiring attributes in their own ways. Ghibli just ranks on my top list.
Yeah! Disney looks up to Hayao Miyazaki because he is a creative and inspiring genius! Perhaps one of the most creative people of all time. I've watched his movies my entire life and I use them as a guide through my entire life. Even though Pixar and Disney makes a lot of popular films around here (I live in NJ), I never enjoyed them as much. They have great movies but nothing near comparison to the magic of Ghibli films!
When Miyazaki will pass away, I hope is tomb will be a garden with live in alot of happiness, respect and no trace of man. Like everyplace with calm and peace from is movies.
aww. He's getting so old now. ;~; I used to watch kiki's delivery service all the time when I was 4-6, I watched Totoro at a friend's house around that time, too. I then saw Castles in the Sky and Spirited Away. I watched them again but I kept watching Spirited Away when I was like 9-11. Then the video store that had it ,got rid of it.. ;~; wtf right?? and I've recently rewatched Howl's Movie castle. The first time I saw that movie was at the same friend's house I mentioned. (:
Disney is a great studio that has produces great films with master inspirational animators under it's wings through the year, BUT one thing Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli always did and do that Disney hasnt ans pehaps has been stopping, is to stick to traditional animation even when the times in the industy have changed, even through the expense of animation production, Hayao Miyazaki sama has stuck to it and all of his work has been so amazing and so inspiriational to so many people and so many
I am trying to find out where Miyazaki got his inspiration for the artwork of Nausicaa. I remember reading about the artist that he pulled it from but I cannot find him, anyone know anything?
Disney! Never compare Miyazaki-san with Disney, Disney makes me think of disneyization and shit...nothing skin-deep but Miyazaki-san's animations are so full of inspiration and implications which bring the human race into deep thoughts. He makes me realize that animation is nothing naive, there can always be a deep concern about the serious topics underlying each seemingly-children-film, he chooses to make it, and he made it successfully. Not the box office makes him successful, not that money.
oh my goodness lol. It's SO WEIRD seeing jonathan ross interviewing someone so formal and properly without all of his usual jokes and taking the piss out of them like on his own show. Guess Miyazaki san's mastery presence is so great even he had to serious the heck up XDD
I knew Miyazaki had met Neil Gaiman and Jonathan Ross before Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo came out. It's not very likely to be correct, but I naturally associated Howl with Neil Gaiman and Ponyo's eccentric father with Jonathan Ross.
Naussica was my first movie that I watched and remembered. My family's Japanese so I have a lot of the films made by him. All brilliant works that I hope continues to be known throughout all time even though I doubt it will.. :(
That thing about Spielberg saying that the car chase scene from The Castle of Cagliostro is apparently just a strange myth, the rumor is he said it after seeing the movie at the 1980s Cannes Film Festival but they never played the film at the film festival during the year Spielberg was said to have made the comment. Other than that rumor there is no other evidence he said it and neither him or Miyazai have ever verified it. Very strange rumor indeed.
Honestly, if Disney buys out Ghibli, it would be the greatest thing to happen to them. Because then, maybe, we can get some professional American writers to write their cartoons for them. Even better is if they force ghibli to use character model sheets to trace off of. It would be just like in the 80's when we had good cartoons like Thundercats and Silverhawks! -- The Declaration
It has also said that Hayao doesn't want to work for goddamn Disney. Like what Peter Bull as the Russian Ambassador said... "I do not want to work for the support of imperialist stooges!!".
I usually hate when anime movies get dubbed in English because the voice actors usually fuck it up. But I must say, I did like the dub on Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service.
@invisiblepopcornmonk Okay, i was obviously exaggerating and making a statement about how much better Studio Ghibli is than disney. Yeah, Disney might have more publicity, doesn't make it anywhere near as good quality as studio Ghibli. Like Jonathan Ross said; western nimrods aren't accepting of animation to be so sophisticated, of not only just how well the animation done, but the very mature and enduing storylines and characters. And it seems like disney these days aren't aware of it either.
Well, personally, I think either way is fine because the fact that she was spirited away is true, but her aim or goal in that world was to rescue her parents whom were turned into pigs because they ate the spirits' food.
People also tend to call Osamu Tezuka "the Japanese Disney" like Miyazaki, but I think Miyazaki is more worthy of that title because he is primarily an animator. I know it's something Miyazaki dislikes, but I'm just stating my opinion.
I think the point is that Disney wasn't an animator, or really a filmmaker. He was a producer and entrepreneur. He oversaw the production of his movies, yes, and was very heavily involved in the early days, but he was more interested in expanding his empire, opening theme parks, making live actions films, merchandising etc. etc. with a purpose to entertain and make a profit doing it. The things that made his films so great was because of the people working for him - sure, he inspired them, was strict on quality and drove them to get further and further, but he wasn't directly responsible for what made them great. The reason he even chose to do fairy tales in the first place is because they were timeless and thus had a greater potential for sustained profit (and boy, was he right). Miyazaki is nothing like that. He's sole interest is in his films, he conceives them, storyboards them, directs them animates a great chunk of them and then redraws at least half of all the other animator's drawings. They may be similar in terms of success and the wide appeal of their films, but that's where their similarities end.
Um first of all Disney was an Animator and inspired Osamu Tezuka so much that he wanted to meet Disney at a baseball game like a fanboy and he drew the big eyes thing from Disney early movies and how can you say disney is not a filmmaker or Animator is just beyond me to be honest
That's it!! "SOPHISTICATED"!!!!! Our stupid, dumbed-down films are not sophisticated! Well, they should be, because ANIMATION IS NOT JUST FOR KIDS!!!!!! In other words, I loved watching this. ^_^ Thanks for posting.
@MikeSaurus uh no it is an anime... do you even know what Anime is?.. and who care's if i spelled it wrong.. there's no spelling Bee right now.... so you fail in how you talk to people!
No, i wouldn't prefer Disney buying Ghibli, this makes it like a hierarchical thing. Ghibli is a very great studio and not deserve to be bought, and its productions are totally different from Disney's regarding the style and the conveyed messages and everything else. And if it has to use force to force Ghibli to use Disney's approach, what's the point? To show Disney is powerful? To show it's got loads of cash? Ghibli's productions are detailed and nice enough, what's better is they're meaningful
I totally get the offense taken with "Japanese Disney", I get just as offended when people call Europa Park the "German Disneyland" cuz it's sorta degrading if anything
i dont think he meens the animation quality, i meen bluth and disneys animation skill is top notch but i think he meens the story and themes in the movie these things are far more complex and not neccaserily aimed at children ( i realise bakshi did adult animation but i was gag centric really and not about story and i wont mention the scary rotoscope stuff bakshi did)
I refuse to agree that studio Ghibli would be better with Disney. Studio Ghibli has a magical thing about it that Disney can never understand. If Disney buys all of studio Ghibli, they will ruin the magic that we all know and love.
"Disney is such a big company, they're very keen to have everything in the world". When this interview was recorded around 2007 he didn't know how right he was.
it was recorded in 2002
I'm surprised he joined with Disney then. Though I don't know the details in the contract behind "Disney's Studio Ghibli"
I think the deal is Ghibli does whatever they want and when they're done they let Disney handle distribution in the west, and english dubbing.
Yeah, they fucking want the rights to everything! Pixar, marvel, shit, next they're gonna be coming after Dreamworks.
I wish this interview was longer. I love Miyazaki so much. I could listen to him talk about Studio Ghibli and his life as an animator all day ^_^
"All you ever see on the TV is cooking programmes"
Heh. A culture a world apart with a very different set of ideas and values, but there's still no escape from TV chefs...
He is awesome, love every single anime that he made
How can anyone even DREAM of comparing the legendary Studio Ghibli to the greed-ridden company that is Disney?
I LOVE YOU MIYAZAKI!!!!!!
im a grown man who works full time as a mechanic in northern canada, and i feel that if i ever met this man in person i would break down into tears being graced with such a beautiful mind,
i love his rejection of the comparison with Disney and the company Disney, he is far more talented, his mind is immeasurably and intrinsically more creative and imaginative, he is far more open-minded, i don't know where to end when citing the superiority of this man and his work over anything Disney has ever attempted to create as well as over the man, Waltz Disney
I really admired hayao Miyazaki!! love his works. I watched almost all his work. but "Howl's moving castle" is my favorite.
Ririka Hana yess,i loove Howl's moving castle💕💞❤💜💝💘
"Btw, nice ginger cake." lol
Japanese Disney? that's offensive
Yeah indeed, and Miyazaki took it that way too.
+Po_The _Jedi More like Disney is American Studio Ghibli.
+Po_The _Jedi Um, Disney created animation.
+J you wish
Aram El Gamer Why would I wish that? Pluss Disney has on several occacions mentioned that Studio Ghibli was a huge inspiration to most of their work. Well atleast before the bandwagon of animations came along and weight out the fraction making it "most".
Spirited Away is one of the most incredible and beautiful pieces of art that has ever been made.
That was a hell of a short interview :{
WHAT THE FUCK ?????????????
GHIBLI is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away than disney !
I mean what the fuck ???????
GHIBLI Greater than disney !
+Ree khaled Comparing Disney and Ghili seems very natural. But a direct comparison isn't really possible because the styles are very different.
I prefer ignoring which is "better"; both has made some excellent films.
Ree khaled Studio Ghibli is WAAAAYYYYY BETTER than goddamn fucking Disney!!! Love Studio Ghibli!!!! Fuck Disney!!!!
O-Dog Kubrick
AGREED
Ree khaled Thank you very much!!
O-Dog Kubrick
your welcom
Miyazaki is a great admirer (and was a friend of) the late French artist Moebius. Azach was the comic that Miyazaki drew inspiration from. Moebius was also well known for his concept work for the films Alien and Tron.
Hayao Miyazaki is great, love all of his movies. Genije!

Disney actually uses his work for inspirations =)
Yeah! Disney looks up to Hayao Miyazaki because he is a creative and inspiring genius! Perhaps one of the most creative people of all time. i love these films
Princess mononoke was my favorite so far and frrist
I think "if" i met Hayao Miyazaki, id die of pure awesomeness.
Disney and Ghibli are similar but quite different. Disney is entertainment. Ghibli is actually CULTURE.
These films represent the pinnacle of humanity.
When Miyazaki will pass away, I hope is tomb will be a garden with live in alot of happiness, respect and no trace of man. Like everyplace with calm and peace from is movies.
Hayao Miyazaki THE BEST!
at the look of it, he will still live 20 years or so
If there is a chance that I could work on his Tezuka, I would definitely take the job.
no, its a different relation. They have the international distribution rights or something like that, but not the company itself.
Jonathan Ross just said Totoro...
"All you ever see on the TV is cooking programmes" 😂😂😂
I think Jonathan Ross (or Woss) wins the prize for most awkwardly british ending to an interview
aww. He's getting so old now. ;~; I used to watch kiki's delivery service all the time when I was 4-6, I watched Totoro at a friend's house around that time, too. The interviewer looks like Nicholas Cage...
The moment the motor mouth opens... that Jonathan Ross...
That's actually Saul Goodman.
Maeda Toshiie gfyyuuj
The title should read "Nicholas Cage interviews Japanese Colonel Sanders"
-Cries- Everyone dies. Even him, but the movies that you saw will always be a part of his life. Get what I mean?
Where is the song from that's at the very beginning? I've seen all the movies but I just can't pin point this one song!
awww you're correcting my grammar? How cute! :') Congratulations, you're now automatically smarter than me

Nausicaä is my favorite!! so sad they didn't interview him about this film.... even worse.. it's the only one they've skipped >.
@MsCheekybunbun I watch his movies all at least 2 times a year...sometimes even more often, but sadly I only have Prinzess mononoke...
I am trying to find out where Miyazaki got his inspiration for the artwork of Nausicaa. I remember reading about the artist that he pulled it from but I cannot find him, anyone know anything?

Seriously. What's the song in the beginning? It's bothering me like crazy!
@Wolfswind003 The internet has all of them.
0:38 (the drive-in theater) What movie is this from?
oh my goodness lol. It's SO WEIRD seeing jonathan ross interviewing someone so formal and properly without all of his usual jokes and taking the piss out of them like on his own show. Guess Miyazaki san's mastery presence is so great even he had to serious the heck up XDD
DX it's not true I must watch more of his films, and he also can't die because his films will live forever in the hearts of everyone who doesn't suck.
Well no specifically to Nausicaa, I've seen a Miyazaki interview and he said he pulled the concept art straight from Moebius
America use to make movies like that pace wise in the 70s.
Naussica was my first movie that I watched and remembered. My family's Japanese so I have a lot of the films made by him. All brilliant works that I hope continues to be known throughout all time even though I doubt it will.. :(

weird.
He can die, he's too much kind and peacefull.
One of the best artist evah in history.
Is this the same translater as in Total war Shogun 2? haha Woundnt be surprised
Did anyone notice that yoshikage kira is interviewing miyazaki?
@RyanLkirk Yeah, but it's not fair watching them on the internet :)
Honestly, if Disney buys out Ghibli, it would be the greatest thing to happen to them.

is it ok to mix some Takahata movie's into a Miyazaki's interview ? :p
Except this was aired in england.
but anyways, his movies are amazing. I wish I had all of them. oh and I forgot to mention I've watched Princess Mononoke a few times.
It has also said that Hayao doesn't want to work for goddamn Disney. Like what Peter Bull as the Russian Ambassador said... "I do not want to work for the support of imperialist stooges!!".

I searched azach can't find it
Why, of all people, did Jonathan Ross get to interview Miyazaki -_- WHYYY BBC??
@invisiblepopcornmonk Okay, i was obviously exaggerating and making a statement about how much better Studio Ghibli is than disney. Isn't this translator the voice of Shogun Total War? : P
Miyazaki is the best!!!!!
Well, personally, I think either way is fine because the fact that she was spirited away is true, but her aim or goal in that world was to rescue her parents whom were turned into pigs because they ate the spirits' food.
I hate how people angry about movie description and calling an Englishman as American. Learn the difference and read the description first!!
That's a rather bold generalization. Especially considering that this guy is British...
People also tend to call Osamu Tezuka "the Japanese Disney" like Miyazaki, but I think Miyazaki is more worthy of that title because he is primarily an animator. I know it's something Miyazaki dislikes, but I'm just stating my opinion.

It's the theme to Nausicaa
@ziraffen It's Pom Poko
I have to say, Disney make really good cartoons ! But Ghibli make incredible pieces of art.
WOSSSSYYY !!! :D
Opps, sorry! I meant Arzach.
Johnathon Ross is English
That's it!! "SOPHISTICATED"!!!!! Our stupid, dumbed-down films are not sophisticated! Well, they should be, because ANIMATION IS NOT JUST FOR KIDS!!!!!!
In other words, I loved watching this. ^_^ Thanks for posting.
Princess Mononoki.
Nuff said 'Merica.
He was British not American
Did he just say japan-o-rama?
QUIT SMOKING YOU MUST LIVE FOREVER!!!
Well, she has to stay in the spirit world to rescue her parents. But yeah, she doesn't journey there on purpose.
How can you get that angry about a pretty solid description of a film?
......Totoro......
I like how it just happens hahaha miyazaki man.
NAUSIKA is my best!!!!!
@MikeSaurus uh no it is an anime... do you even know what Anime is?.. and who care's if i spelled it wrong.. there's no spelling Bee right now.... so you fail in how you talk to people!
Totro! my first anime!!! >u<

I prefer his movie than disney anime

Dude, don't correct my spelling please, you get the idea... i have an English Mac so don't expect me to correct it. :/
If I ever find the sorcerers stone i will give it to miyazaki.
Yeah but the interviewer should of at least looked into it.
Ya its bad enough disney gets their logos on the movies love the english dubs tho
i can say it how i want
I refuse to agree that studio Ghibli would be better with Disney. Studio Ghibli has a magical thing about it that Disney can never understand. If Disney buys all of studio Ghibli, they will ruin the magic that we all know and love.
PROTIP: Confused Matthew
"By the way, nice ginger cake."
