Miyazaki proceeds to run around the office telling all of his employee that he got Anno to voice his character excitely xD and he begin to be more happy making the and finishing his movie. even compliment his own storyboard xD

    • @LowkeyGeek
      @LowkeyGeek  3 года назад +96

      LOL...that's definitely the main reason. Also, it's a common quirk that Japanese people have when they talk to each other. One of the reasons why most see them as "shy".

    • @challengerapporaches
      @challengerapporaches 2 года назад +49

      Its a part of Japanese culture that people don't make eye contact. A good friend of mine who was raised in Japan, but has parents who are American says she had never even looked some of her closest friends in the eye, and that it was an big adjustment doing so in America. And from my experience learning Japanese and having Japanese foreign exchange students, it seems to be the case. Pretty much everyone who taught me about Japanese cultural norms and language mentioned at one point or another not to make eye contact even if you are equals, and that only the senpai(senior) should make eye contact with the kouhai(junior) or it is disrespectful.

    Two gods of animation just sitting down and talking is indeed AMAZING.
    But knowing more about Mr. Anno as an individual and reading his translated interviews and the documentary special he had, and knowing more about Mr. Miyazaki and his ideology when it comes to anime as a medium I know that if the cameras were off even back in the late 90's there would have truly been some amazing ideological conversing going on between the two.
    One who was raised on Anime to help create something deeply personal and about himself and his depression, and the other a man who has several interest that resides outside of anime and he uses those interest to create while being an perfectionist in what he seeks to create.
    The two are so different as creators I wish I could witness a sitdown between the two just talking in a less theatrical setting like this and more down to earth.

    • @LowkeyGeek
      @LowkeyGeek  3 года назад +9

      Very well said and thank you so much for your comment. I 100% agree and even just getting this small glimpse into this type of conversation between the two is soo fascinating. Also knowing how the Japanese culture allows for shyness and not expressing feelings too well, it's hard to get a full honest chat between the two especially with the cameras on. It would be amazing to have these two at an izakaya one night with some drinks and just listen in on the two talk for hours.

      I love this clip as well! It was part of a TV special that was filmed during the filming of an episode of an NHK series called "Sekai Waga Kokoro no Tabi". The English translation would be "World Journey of My Memory" or "Journey of the Heart". In one of the episodes, Hayao Miyazaki was featured traveling around Paris and the Sahara desert where Hideaki Anno joined him and that's where they filmed their segments for the other TV special. I believe this was all back in 1998.

    Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
    Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
    I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive.
    Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
    Sometimes I hated myself because I failed to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I would beat myself further for failing to prause what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
    I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
    I just wanted Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else mattered.
    There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
    I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
    But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
    But finally, with Evangelion 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
    But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

    • @LowkeyGeek
      @LowkeyGeek  2 года назад +15

      I really appreciate you taking the time out to share your story and experience and how Evangelion has affected you. I hope now, you can feel a sense of closure and just leave knowing that this was a part of your life that was dark but you were able to overcome it.

      @hawkeyenextgen7117 2 года назад +6

      @@LowkeyGeek Thank you. I want to be able to move forward from Eva, and find peace in the fact Shinji is happy. I want to let him go.
      But it’s hard, because he was the closest friend I had in Quarantine. After losing my friend and girlfriend to suicide, I’m afraid to let him go.
      I find it very ironic and hypocritical that a fandom dedicated to idolize a series displaying the cost of trauma, downplayed my own.

    • @LowkeyGeek
      @LowkeyGeek  2 года назад +5

      @@hawkeyenextgen7117 Fandoms can be both good and bad and unfortunately, some make it a very toxic environment. Being a Star Wars fan myself, I can totally understand what you mean. However, they're not all like that and you just have to find the ones that can relate to your level.

    Miyazaki-san seems much more curt & somber, while Anno-san seems cheerful & upbeat in his attitude.
    If you knew nothing else about them other than this & that they both make films, you might think that Hideaki Anno makes colorful, hopeful children's films whereas Hayao Miyazaki makes existentialist psychoanalysis & genre deconstruction titles. Huehuehuehue.

    Kinda infuriates me nowadays seeing Miyazaki having a overseas vacation in 1998... which he and other leaders in Ghibli could have prevented the death of Kondo Yoshifumi... who almost certainly died from karoshi

    • @LowkeyGeek
      @LowkeyGeek  9 дней назад

      I don't think it's fair to blame him for Kondo's passing. Yes, the life of an animator at that time was grueling but that was the norm. Plus, you see this as a vacation? They were researching on location for inspiration for their upcoming projects.

      @@LowkeyGeek I didn't blame Miyazaki alone, please don't twist my words. Miyazaki definitely was in position to prevent that from happening... of course Ghibli don't just have one boss, but Miyazaki is definitely a leading figure...
      While Kondo-san had his own agency in joining the production of Mononoke right after Whisper of the Heart, it is management's responsibility in duty of care towards their employees.... specially considering Miyazaki was a trade unionist during his days back at Toei... kinda makes him a hypocrite thinking about it...
