Thanks for the demonstration! I've been holding off on a home automation system for the very reasons that Hubitat addresses. As a software developer, I'm excited about the degree of customization that this system offers.
Thanks, you just turned my kitchen lights off, then on. LOL Hubitat rocks.
This explanation of Habitat is what I needed. Thank you!
Just got mine, two smart outlets, and four PIR sensors and I'm loving the gritty DIY nature of it. I had great results very quickly. I realized I had a chromecast attached to a projector and native functionality in a TV and was able to integrate to that with voice alerts via text to speech.
This is a long way from the old X10 and firecrackers! :)
Now I'm surveying everything I can attach to this thing but think I want a hand held remote button that I can use to override automations as I'm walking around on >10 acres, something simpler than smashing pixels on a phone.
I stumbled on Hubitat by accident and ordered it (coming this Wednesday). I have both a Vera Plus & Edge in addition to a ST v.2 hub. I've been at home automation for around five years and excited to see another player. Can't wait to check it out, especially after seeing your video AFTER I purchased it!
I have move from Smart things to Hubitat and the reliability is much better. I believe the device hubitat uses is originally an android TV box, that explains the HDMI port and IR.
raspberry pi?
Any chance you could do a video reviewing the Sharp Tools setup that you have for the Hubitat system?
This is awesome - would love to see more home automation tuts! Great job!
More to come!
How did you set up the icon dashboard for the tablet?
Sharptools.io is the dashboard/Site you see
Thanks for posting this! I just got my HE hub and in the process of learning how to migrate my SmartThings devices over to HE. This was helpful to get a grand overview of things will work on this product line.
Just purchased Hubitat and found your video very helpful! Did go crazy trying to mimic your dashboard till I read you used Sharp tools and not the Hubitat dashboard. I wanted to group a number of icons, such as lights and also use the keypad function for my alarm. Speaking about alarms, is Sharp tools safe enough to use since it's internet based? PLEASE, continue with addition Hubitat videos. Great video again!
@@Trialnerror Thank you for responding to my question concerning Sharptools safety. After playing with it for a considerable amount time, I agree with you 100% and that keypad is phenomenal and has put me more at ease concerning security. Again, appreciated your video help and look forward to more Hubitat videos. All the best!
@Trial N' Error, nice video. How did you setup your Arm home, disarm, and Arm away tiles?
the dashboard, is that sharptools or something native hubitat?
Thinking about making the move from Wink to this. Although I have gotten Wink to function pretty quickly, Hubitat seems to offer more control. The thought of moving over all of my switches and sensors is daunting.
Can you give more details about how you configure arming with pin codes? Thanks!
Thanks, your video helped me pull the trigger and switch from ST to hubitat. I got ST due to IRIS being shut down, but its main function is not security. I have been using webcore to setup things up but it sounds like most of this is all native that I want. And I love that it will run local. no worry about no internet. It was by chance I found out about Habitat. Thanks so much for making this video.
Do you have an opinion on the Tuya Zigbee 3.0 Hub Gateway, WiFi Smart Home Bridge Wireless Remote Controller? I know it's not local but aside from that, doesn't it give just as much options as well as being future proof with Wifi as one of it's capabilities? Does it even do what yours does or am I comparing apples to oranges?
Any feedback appreciated.
I guess Sam Harris is a Tech RUclipsr now... xD
Question on the dashboard you have on the tablet. That's SharpTools. Does SharpTools run locally?
@@Trialnerror Yeah my concern on that is if my connection is down. Doesn't happen often for me, but it does.
Nice paint job in your house looks like its just been done 👍😎 good interesting video to 😉
Your Hubitat setup is goals! I was wondering what made you to create a zwave focused home over zigbee? I’m having trouble deciding between the two. I want consistency
Thank you very much. Nothing really made me go that way but now I would say I'm split 70% zwave and 30% zigbee. I honestly think the zigbee is a bit faster at executing commands. I would say go with whatever is the best deal on the switch/outlet/whatever it is and don't be afraid to mix and match.
I would think that the hdmi AV and ir inputs could be for like a stop box so you could stream it and control it from the phone
Very new to using my new Hubitat, yes a massive upgrade in terms of reliability and speed so far (over my old wink 1 and wink 2 hubs). My only complaint so far is the mobile app, not being visually appealing, and lack of homescreen widgets. I very much enjoyed winks ability to place widgets on my phones desktop. Hopefully 3rd party mobile software is available or in the works?
Question: Do you need a computer to setup or run the system?
I'm currently a ST user and to do somethings outside of its simple scenes I have to use IFTTT. So this seems so much more customizable than ST. I work with computers all day at work, but I have become accustom to using my phone or tablet for most things at home (email, pay bills, games, etc). I have a home PC but rarely use it. Thanks for the video.
Lol. That’s your dashboard on your phone??? You think you got enough tiles all crammed in there?? 😂
what security system are you using, that you are able to turn it on and off from a custom application? one of the not-ADT/common security systems?
Nice video. FYI, the 15mins to scan zwave has very little to do with processing power and is more of a factor of the zwave protocol itself...
Thanks for the info!
I just purchased this hub and none of those ports or dongle were included in my Hubitat. Granted the Zigbee radio is built into mine as is the zwave, but I don't have any of the additional inputs whatsoever. Mine only included the power port, ethernet port and a single usb 2.0 port
BIG TIME X10 user... UNTIL Hubitat!
That's a hell of an upgrade!
Bought my first X10 controller in 1983, still using it with a wifi interface.
No kidding!?! I'd say you got your money's worth hahaha. If I had to guess in 83' you found it at Radio Shack.
Hey great video , please can you tell me what security alarm system you are using ??
We are now couple months further, how is it going thus far? Still in love with the system? Any downsides? Thinking of moving from fibaro to hubitat....
Is the security system just zwave or Zigbee sensors integrated into Hubitats security suite or hard wired sensors connected to something like konnected.io first with a keypad which is then integrated into Hubitat?
Love my Hubitat!
Glad to hear! Thanks very much for watching!
Does it work with cameras? I had the IRIS system but the are shutting down.
I wonder if hubitat would work with Insteon system and switches. It isn’t listed as compatible but you said it’s worked with other unlisted devices
Yea, I've had a 100% success rate using the built in generic zwave and zigbee "drivers" to work with everything. Sometimes you need to try a couple different ones till you find one that works.
I'd use the exact same tablet, you don't happen to have made a video of the opening and usb reverting etc?
Can you set different dashboard for each user? I'm planning to have it in a big house where I want the kids to have separate dashboards that they only control their rooms.
Please advise.
Also, have you tried the Hubitat phone app?
Yes you sure can. Each user can have a custom dashboard and links built into those dashboards to sub screens if needed.
@@Trialnerror Appreciate your quick reply.
How on earth did you get your dashboard to have all those icons on, I can literally just get buttons, barely, would love a vid on that please ??
Do you have an inventory list of all the devices you are using in your home?
what home security package are you connecting to for the enable and disable of security via the dashboard?
Please link that video where you automate your garage for $30.. I didn't see it in your video list
I have been installing a lot of TP Link switches . Does Hubatat work with them ?
Great review!
Great review. I've always thought about home automation and maybe i should try it. Ill wait until I finish with my security camera setup deployment first but the Hubitat looks like a great place to start. I know you like getting good deals on things so checkout Reolink POE cameras. My favorites are the 5MP RLC-423's but the RLC-511's are a great start. I could see integrating some video feeds into the Hubitat dashboard in place of those webcams.
@@Trialnerror I was in your place a few years ago. I've tried multiple Poe camera brands at my house and work. The reolinks are always cheaper and I've never had an issue with them. I just started one camera at a time. Best thing about reolink is the free software that you can run on an old computer to make your own NVR because I have about 21tb of raided storage and most pre built setups are limited to 8tb single disks.
How does the system cope with power outage or what do you use to prevent power disruption?
Falls back to it's internal battery and will keep going about 5hrs or so. With that said, I just put the house off grid w/solar so no more worries about that for me :)
Hello , could you possibly tell me where you bought the wall mount from from the tablet ?
Thankyou
There isn't a wall mount. He unclipped the back panel of the tablet, screwed it to the wall, and then clipped the tablet back onto the back panel that was attached to the wall. I guess you have to sure not to place the screws anywhere that might short out some internal parts of your tablet once you clip it all back together (I'd also insulate the screwheads with some tape, to be sure).
I noticed within your dashboard, you have poole controls...Mind sharing what you have:)
Great content! Thx for the reply. Would you mind sharing what led lights you use as well as pump😃😃
What type of alarm system would you recommend to work with this unit?
Kelly Merrell Hubitat has its own platform for security, u just add the sensors to the system. Also u can take over ur existing wired alarm system with a unit called Konnected. Easy to set up and u don’t have to invest in wireless sensors!
What door locks are you using?
Since it is not web based how does it notify you if you are away and you have an intrusion?
@@Trialnerror Is it possible for you to demonstrate that in a reply video?
This video is WAY out of date. It's almost 3 years old and the Hubitat has come a long ways. Time to do a new one on the C7 version. I have the C7 and it is AWESOME. I too started when the BSR X10 first came out.
I had no clue it was any different! What makes it better?
@@Trialnerror Well right off the bat all of the zigbee, wifi and Z-wave transceivers are built into the device. You can now bind two hubs together like the hubitat and philips hue hub or even the smartthings hub while you convert over. I'm not familiar with the old models so you may require a little more research but I am totally stoked by the C7 and like you this is very close to what I have always wanted. I'm looking forward to your updated video......Thanks.
By the way they were on sale on Memorial day for $122.00 with free shipping. That is when I bought mine. Cheers.
I had an X10 system!
We're getting old man
@@Trialnerror Remember setting up the IR so that a motion sensor would start the VCR recording. Oh yes... the good ol' days.
Great video - very informative. Question: How do you get the pincode popup when you disarm the HSM? is this a Sharptools thing or can I get it in Hubitat?
@@Trialnerror thank you!
Did you try HomeSeer ?
I am using Vera now and have been for 3 years. This has been my first and only home hub. I have been looking to make a change because I haven't been completely happy with it. My major hang up is the scene configuration in Vera. I don't find it to be user friendly while trying to configure a more complex scene. I was looking into changing to SmartThings but I think that is only because the majority of my appliances and cell phone is Samsung. Would you recommend changing to Hubitat from Vera and how difficult is it to change all of my devices over from Vera to Hubitat?
@@Trialnerror Thank you for the quick reply! One last question... What was the best way you found to add the existing devices? How close to the hub do you need to be to include?
for Americans only all others use home assistant its free
do it supports 433 Mhz RF?
It looks like it's a *recycled Android TV box, therefore the hdmi and other ports.
how much security did you lose by adding alixa
Zero. Alexa has no permissions to change the alarm state.
@@Trialnerror thank you
@@sweetsilage Thank you for watching!
What security systems work with this?
If you are referring to hard-wired systems, it replaces your security system panel but you can reuse the "dumb" hardwire to integrate your existing sensors to the smart Hubitat hub using a product like konnected.io/ which can "talk" to Hubitat.
Hey, thanks for the great review! Let me know if you have any questions. Appreciate the support!
@@Trialnerror yes, I'm head of product and business development
@Patrick Stuart Does this hub have a mobile app so i can keep tabs of my house while at work? I don't need to app to do a lot with settings or set-up. I have the Smartthings hub v2 now but am wanting a more robust local processing option. However, I like my mobile app.
kwang0429 as of now, there is no app. Instead you make your own web app. I have difficulty explaining it, but basically you can make multiple custom pages.
Trial n' Error , great video. Thank you for details. How can you put 2 hubs together for one house as a secondary hub but control all the devices using one one? I have a house that’s big as well. Thanks
hubitat does not support lifx
This is very old... no more ports or external
Can you simulate a "worst case scenario " where there is no power and no internet connection. How is this system responding to situation like that ( notifications, self arm, etc). Did you implement any special security measures to prevent someone from cutting your cable or DSL line, or power lines going to your home ?
Nowadays, with the smart meters, electric companies can shut you down remotely without dispatching a technician to your location. Installing battery backup can prevent a power loss, but what about internet? How is that implemented into this system ?
Trial n' Error - ok. Thank you. Technically you could avoid problems with power by installing bigger UPS ( by modifying regular UPS by adding 3 or 4 full size 12v marine batteries), and that would give you enough time to implement necessary steps to secure your property.
There are 3G modules that you could possibly incorporate into your build capable of sending a text message to any phone outside your property.
I love your system, with one exception. I don't like when systems are listening or spying on my conversations, so I would never implement voice control. Plus I have a "heavy " Eastern European accent that throws off many voice recognition devices. Some systems are really good (Alexa, Siri), but some are far behind ( especially my Subaru).
I understand that our phone conversations are screened and recorded, but I'm not crazy about Amazon ( or God knows who else they selling that to) listening to all of our conversations, perhaps even recording it, just so it can recognize specific word like "Alexa" and then follow through with a specific task.
Thank you again for responding to my comment. Subbed and awaiting future videos !
Your hub is obsolete. The dongle is no longer necessary if you live in North America. All you get for connections are power and ethernet. Even your software is obsolete.
Wrong. It's is anything but obsolete. If my hub dies, all I need to do is pickup another and plug in the dongle. All the zwave and zigbee pairings are stored in the dongle not the hub. The new Hubitats make you rebuild the entire network if the hub fails. Which would you rater have...I know my choice.
Pin starts with a '1' :P
Looks ugly... i prefer home-assistant my father in law got me into home-automation
phooey! outdated and useless ad.
