she missed Muriel's Wedding
100%
Nah that sucked.
Another great movie is Gallipoli with a very young Mel Gibson before he became a famous movie star.
That's a great list. I would add the movie The Dish. It's a story loosely based on Australia's involvement in the moon landing via our satellite dish at Parkes in NSW.
Anything by Paul Fenech is the pure example of what all Australians would call a must watch
Housos and Fat Pizza are Gold
Upright - Tim Minchin as the family black sheep on a road trip across Aus to see his dying mum, with his old piano in the back of the ute. And a sulky/depressed teenaged girl stuck with him.
some of my favorites in no particular order
The're a weird mob
The Dish
Kenny
Romper Stomper (bit dark but still very cool)
Struck by lightning (kind of old and hard to find)
Malcolm
could list more, but that's enough, Aussies do have a kind of unique humor that may not be for everyone but I love it.
It’s your shout !!😂
The only one of those I have watched was The Castle. (Gonna have to check these out now).
I personally really like movies/
Red Dog
The Dressmaker
Strictly Ballroom
Mulin Rouge
For tv shows I used to watch
Round The Twist (original series)
Water Rats
Blue Healers
All Saints
Sea Change (original series)
The Games (I think utopia may be made by the same people???)
I know most of those are old now, but I don’t tend to watch tv anymore.
Recommend all of them and support the concept of promoting indigenous history.
My personal referrals are for:
Phar Lap 1983 - Australia has a strong history in horse racing, this is a most famous horse.
The Shiralee 1957 (black & white) and a 1987 version - both very much depict Australians during hardship.
The Shiralee, now there's a great movie, I haven't seen that in years
Wow. I totally forgot about Phar Lap. Did they have a stuffed version with his heart at the Museum. I have a vague memory. Was very young.
- The Sundowners (1960); a ton of English actors in an Australian story (another version was done a decade before), some attempting Australian accents- some successfully, others- not...
- Kings in Grass Castles, a mini-series (1998); something of an international effort, given it has 'Stannis the Mannus' Stephen Dillane, a member of the Fox acting dynasty- the partially international cast is not surprising, given it's about an Irish immigrant family - but there's also my girl, Essie (Miss Fisher, or Lady Crane to the GoT fans) at least 3 fantastic Aboriginal performances (one being Ernie Dingo) & many more actors I can't recall
- The Overlanders (1946)- featured one of Australia's true early stars, Chips Rafferty ('Australia's Gary Cooper') - it has a familiar feel to anyone that's watched "Australia", except they're going in a different direction (& it isn't solely focused on the Territory, but includes Western Australia & Queensland, too). It apparently came about because the government believed Australia's contribution to the war effort wasn't sufficiently being recognised, & Britain's Ealing Studios, enthusiastic to make a film in Australia- sent some of their people- only 5 in total, including the director, due to the limitations of the war (the rest of the crew were Australian). He loved the Australian landscape & wanted it to be largely set outdoors- basing the script on an earlier event, from 1942. It was wildly popular, locally & internationally- taking a concept familiar in American Westerns (a cattle drive) & grounding it in its' local culture.
Another good movie was "We of the Never Never" from 1982 based on the 1908 autobiographical novel from Jeannie Gunn, an educated woman from the upper-middle class of society, and her story of adapting to life in the outback of Australia (thanks Wikipedia 😀- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_of_the_Never_Never_(film)).
Strictly Ballroom, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, All Aussie Adventures. Everything she mentioned is good (love Fisk). There were a couple on this list that the US tried to remake but fell really flat as I don’t think they really understood the Aussie sense of humour.
They also dubbed The Castle with American accents and changed the car names for American audiences.
@@heatherfruin5050 I didn't know that, all those changes would have ruined the movie.
@@heatherfruin5050don’t mess with the castle it’s as Aussie as Vegemite and shouldn’t be tampered with
Muriels Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Strictly Ballroom, The Castle, The Disk, The Sapphires is based on a true story about Indigenous ladies who went on a tour to entertain the troops in Vietnam ( If I can recall correctly). TV shows- Jack Irish, Rosehaven and Fisk.
The Castle.....
Awesome....
That's going in the pool room...
Tell him he's dreaming...
Ahhh the SERENITY....
Suffer in your jocks...
I have three suggestions for you mate, Malcolm Douglas, Alby Mangles and the Leyland brothers.
They all have multipe shows that not just stand the test of time, but also capture the time so well.
All of her recommendations are either good or very good .
The Castle is definitely a classic .
Utopia and Upper Middle Bogan are where I would start .
The Dish, The Castle, Top End Wedding, The Sapphires, Storm Boy, Red Dog, Australia, Gallipoli, The Water Diviner, For the Term of His Natural Life, Ned Kelly .... Home & Away, Border Control (Au), Travel Guides (Au), Country Homes (Au), Getaway, SAS Australia .. Rosehaven (near my birthplace! 🙋) Aboriginal Australians have their own TV Channel (NITV), SBS and ABC both have Indigenous coverage too! It's a very old small tribe culture, without a shared language and no written history! If you've seen a digeridoo, rock art, Uluru, Yothu Yindi, a Russell Coight outback trip, you have seen it all! 🤨🤔
The best Aussie classic is The Castle, a classic from 1997 which does encapsulate Aussies and their accents
A great Heath Ledger movie is Two Hands filmed in Sydney
For the kiddos is Babe
Cannot stand that movie, The Castle.
Best Aussie film made Two Hands. Brian Brown and the two street kids made the movie I reckon. And the bank robbery scene was an absolute classic.
Red dog movie is totally brilliant
Offspring, a comedy drama, which ran for 7 series was another popular TV show.
Two Hands, Chopper two great movies. Don’t know if you would like Romper Stomper about skin heads in Melbourne starring Russel Crow.
Yep🤘🇦🇺
Russell coights all aussie adventures tv series, movies Danger Close, Kakoda and the light horseman. Man from snowy River not bad either for the right viewers.
G'day D'Neal ol son, hows ya goin. I recommend from that list, "Upper Middle Bogan" and "The Castle" And ill add one of my own fav's "The Man From Snowy River". Cheers for Repin Aussie's And Our Culture over there in Yanky Central😁. Oh tell Texas that "Everything's Bigger In Australia"😎. A big Hoo Roo From ya m8 Downunder
Upper Middle Bogan is awesome!! Kath n Kim in my top 10 and Rake, not mentioned here but great show, check these out! x
lovely BUT The Castle is quite emotional It’s a beautiful movie but makes me cry. ACTUALLY MANY AUSTRALIAN MOVIES have made me cry whereas NO American movies or tv shows have done this. The Brits tho - well that last ep of Blackadder when the soldiers were given the order to leave the trenches running towards the enemy with Rowan @ the helm - so well done - that made me cry buckets - the memory still does.
Nah, too me it is a crap movie.
For drama the Mystery Road series and Savage River.
Red dog is a must
The original book from the 80's is a more factual account and explains the lead up to his horrendous death from the effects of 1080 poison dingo bait, hinting it was purposely given to him by the crabby old caravan park manager.
@@zalired8925 holy FUCK....I would like to say more...
There's some very good indigenous movies, Sweet Country is a recent one
I haven't seen Bush Mechanics mentioned anywhere!
Upper Middle Bogan is a must watch.
There are a lot of indigenous movies . The chant of Jimmy blacksmith is brilliant.
Jedda
@@julierice100 Good film. Also Ten canoes.
Storm Boy.
Those recommendations are PERFECT.
I miss having new episodes of Rosehaven so much.
The Castle, is an absolutely classic Aussie movie, Priscilla Queen of The Desert and Strictly Ballroom.
Tell him he's dreamin!
A TV show in Melbourne, dangerously underrated to watch is Neighbours. Been going for 37/38 years, got cancelled mid 2022 got brought back to life and will start showing new eps in mid-late 2023.
As a 90's kid I've got my list of much watches:
Muriel's Wedding
The Castle
Kath & Kim
Summer Heights High
Please keep in mind these shows were products of their time , and if made today, would take a different appraoch I'm sure.
Can't disagree with your list either.
Oh if you want a good aussie film , watch the movie Chopper
I would probably recommend blue healers which was based in the 90s based in Victoria and it’s about a group of country police offices and how they handle things in the bush. Also a country practice which is also based in the country but in Sydney and is about a bunch of doctors and how they handle things back in the day in the 80s. Both of these shows lasted over 10 seasons and one many awards
The Castle and Kath and Kim are the only ones I've seen lol.
Some other great movies and series are Chopper, Underbelly (
Some great recommendations.
But would definitely have RAKE and Seachange on there as well.
It's the vibe
The castle is the best Aussie movie ever made.
Kath and Kim is a bit too weird for me , never heard of any of the other shows.
Kingswood country is a must watch older comedy but probably not politically correct these days, but very Australian
And also "The Nugget" with Eric Banner
I can't believe you haven't heard of these other shows, however you mustn't watch the ABC very much. Yes, I agree on Kingswood Country. And Mother and Son was brilliant too.😊
Home and Away, Blue Heelers, All Saints, Kingswood Country, Mother and Son, Hey, Dad!
Definitely, the castle is first 😂😂
Not recommended for anyone other than Aussies. They just don't get it.
I think all these are good & im sure there’s more but RED DOG, is a must! Also you’ve reacted to Tim Minchin so Upright would be interesting for you to watch
G'day Mate! All of her suggestions are great!!! New series of Utopia starting soon, YAY!!! I would also add the original series of Mother & Son! Cheers!
If you want to see a GREAT Australian made series, Written and produced by the main actor (Scott Ryan), Mr Inbetween. Story of a Hitman who tries to balance his job and his family life. Based around Sydney and Blue Mountains. Its on FX.
Red Dog (film). Have tissues handy. Muriel's Wedding. Death in Brunswick. My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The Dish etc etc etc. So many!
I've only seen 2 of those, "The Castle, & Cath & Kim.
Other TV shows you might want to check out are, A Country Practice (about a medical practice & hospital in a country town) Blue Healers ( a police drama) Solo One (a country motor cycle cop) Water Rats, (Sydney water police) another Aussie movie"Red Dog" or "Storm Boy" just a few suggestions
Rabbit proof fence is another movie to watch
Can confirm that the ones I have watched of these are excellent and funny AF
The Castle is a must, the others are all pretty good to.
Ok, so watch Wentworth. About a Melbourne women's prison. Amazing fictional tv show. Watch "Upright", a show starring Tim Minchin, is hilarious. Kath and Kim, yes. "Wolf Creek" for some horror tv and "Spirited" for great ghost comedy. But Wentworth is just SOOO good.
Nah it has to be Prisoner
@Julene Young oh that was so good. But i don't know if Neal would be able to get any episodes. Jeez that show broke some ground, didn't it?
I can definately recomend. The Castle. Cath and Kim and Upper Middle Class Bogan
All hillarious classics.
She really gets it. I love all of them , except I've not seen the chef one , so no opinions on it. The are all gold .
Funny that Celia Pacquola is in both Rosehaven (co creator and co star) and Utopia . And Kitty Flanagan is also in Utopia and her own show Fisk.
Glen Robbins is the bogan dad in Upper Middle Bogan and is in Kath & Kim.
The Working Dog production team made Utopia and The Castle ,and a tonne of other movies tv radio books.
The Castle is the funniest Aussie movie of all time 👍❤️, Aussie Chris here mate 🦘🦘😀
I love Aussie movies.occupation is a good one and a really low budget one called, boar ls a fun watch
Yes the indigenous population are under represented on commercial TV altho there are a handful of relly well known indigen9us a tors who we see semi regularly. However we do have a dedicated channel NITV (National Indigenous Television)on the SBS network which has indigenous anchors features indigenous sport culture music movies news and current affairs as well as documentaries about Australian other indigenous nations.
The Castle.
Some other Aussie movies... Welcome to woop woop, Young Einstein, Gallipoli (1981)movie, Romper Stomper, Chopper,Wolf Creek, kokoda, Beneath Hill 60, Gallipoli TV Series
If you want to see true australians look at 'Lynne and Carmel' or 'Ferret and Michelle'. Just short skits but very aussie
For a great show try "Bush Mechanics" , to get a taste of the spirit of the Australian military check out "The Odd Angry Shot" set during the Vietnam war .
Omg I can't believe she didn't mention the TV show called Rake the greatest TV show of all time
Did anyone mention the movie *Crackers* - A 12-year-old Australian (Daniel Kellie) spends a bizarre Christmas holiday with his mother's strange family and boyfriend (Peter Rowsthorn).. Warren Mitchell,*1998.
Shocking but hysterically funny movie.
I have never watched any of these.
Watch Bad Boy Bubby. It's a wild ride. "You be still pop"
There are a lot more, obviously, but I'm just glad she included upper middle bogan.
Yes The Castle! It's an Aussie classic.
Every international tourist I've forced to watch the castle spend the entire movie looking confused and unimpressed because they just don't get the Aussiness of any of it. Most have only gotten about half way through it. Two Hands with Heath Ledger and Brian Brown is always a winner with them, especially Germans for some reason.
@@zalired8925 yeah I can see that. I didn't like it the first time I saw it either. It is very Aussie and different. But I still think it's a great Aussie classic movie. Now I really appreciate it. It really has that Aussie battler spirit.
@@KellboRose It's a true Aussie classic alright.
Definitely watch The Castle, and same people made the movie The Dish which is also brilliant. Utopia is so funny and I think it is relatable to all democratic governments. I love Rosehaven too. There's a few on her list I haven't watched so going to watch those myself. I would also recommend Doctor Doctor which is set in a regional town, Winners and Losers, Thank God You're Here, The Cheap Seats, Outback Truckers, and Back Roads. Hope you share with us your thoughts after watching some of these or maybe do some reaction videos to some shorter clips on Aussie tv shows and movies.
I would definitely recommend starting with 'The Castle'!
I also suggest the hilarious comedy shows 'Housos', 'Swift & Shift' and 'Fat Pizza' on ABC!
Black comedy and upper middle bogan as well as the castle are best
Can I recommend as Rocketfish did RAKE now some of these are a little old but the movies Malcom, Spotswood and Crackerjack and this last movie recommendation is a little just for the humour Young Einstein. Now these are because you are interested in bogan culture Fat Pizza abd Houso's. Other shows Jack Irish, Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, Secret City and Sea change
First thought.....WHERE'S BLUEY?
then I remembered, most of the world already knows Bluey 🤣
The first 4 seasons of True Crime Drama "Underbelly" are definitely worth checking out.
Season 4 titled (Razor) is my favourite, set in Sydney in the 1920s and 30s, the season revolves around the bloody and deadly feud between enemies 'Tily Devine' and 'Kate Leigh....' two Madams that controlled pretty much the entire city's criminal underworld.
And it's on YT....(not sure if it can be viewed outside Australia thought)
Love them all, but I really miss Rosehaven and Black Comedy 🥺
Mate , you have to watch Kath and Kim. Upper Middle Class Bogan and definately watch The Castle. And another great movie is Kenny.
There many good films about Aboriginal culture….including comedy
The Castle is an Aussie classic, as much as it is a piss take on Aussie culture and to a degree is over exaggerated it was made for a Aussie audience in mind simply because of the slang and terminology used in it, only stuff we would understand. There is some truth to the topic though on which the story line is based in the way that average Aussies sometimes have to fight government departments when the government is needing their land for expansion, for an airport, a freeway, road widening etc. I've seen it happen many times in my area of Melbourne. Remember the movie was made in 1997.
It seems most of the suggestions in the comments are recommending comedy TV shows and movies, none of which capture the real life of everyday Aussies.
If you truly want to learn about Aussie culture and everyday life stay away from the comedies until you watch and get a grasp on factual life stories whether factual TV or movies, then the comedies will make a lot more sense because you'll have the canvas upon which the colours are painted.
The castle, great movie. Crackerjack is another must see movie do yourself a favour
Utopia is a satire on government that people were shocked to discover that the previous government seemed to embrace.
To many times did I see a political announcement that people said. “This isn’t Utopia”
If you want some pure Aussie culture try the street busker Darth Vader AKA the Funky Bunny
Rosehaven and Rake are the two best Aussie comedies ever (Not the US versions, sorry)
Chopper..
My favourite Aussie movie is one I can't remember the name of. A massive fire storm has wiped out the rest of the world and Australia is just waiting for its turn, so everybody is just trying too make their last day count. Which also means the psychos are getting to do their thing too. They even give a little girl ecstasy at a party. If anybody remembers the name of the movie I'm talking about, please tell me. I'd really like to watch it again.
Ok must watch movies
Mad Max 1&2
Bad boy Bubby.
Welcome to Woop Woop.
I agree with all except for Bad Boy Bubby. Don't want to scare the man!!!!!!!!!! Jesus, it could scar him for life!
These shows are based on true events and people. It's called 'underbelly'.
The series is based on the Australian underworld. If you're interested, it is informative of the hidden world of Australia.
1. Never heard of it
2. Never bloody heard of it
3. Heard of it, but never watched the bloody show
4. Never heard of it
5. Kath and Kim, ok FINALLY a decent show that's a true blue aussie classic
6. Nope, never heard of it
7. WTF mate, never heard of this one either
8. Ummm what rock have i been hiding under or are these marketed to immigrants?!
9. FARKEN FINALLY the Castle!!! Thought this would be in top 3
Shit list. Where's Chopper, Getting Square, Malcom, Rabbit proof fence, Odd angry shot, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Dish, Red Dog.
You obviously don't watch the ABC. Utopia is very clever comedy but sadly I think it really depicts government spin doctors. 😊
I like your list of movies. That court scene acted by David Wenham was hilarious. 😊
@@heatherfruin5050 to be fair, I've not watched commercial tv (or even non-commercial ABC) in over 20yrs. I always download and watch shows at my own convenience but i did used to download Gruen and back in the day, the chaser's war on everything. I also used to catch Rock Quiz every now and then, but those are all fairly topical at the time, the first two at least so i didn't recommend to watch them now.
@@heatherfruin5050 yeah, that scene is hilarious "oh your H-onour, how am i gonna get home, I've got no bus money, I'm on the bones of me arse!" and "oh what are you picking on old Warren for, he's just a pisshead." or thereabouts. Also the scene where he flees the cops in his undies and thongs 🤣
Dispite her accent she I think she is starting to Say Australya properly. :)
WATCH THE CASTLE NOW MATE
Neal!!! You NEED,emphasis on the word NEED to watch upper middle class Bogans. It Will blow your mind. Aussie at its best.
The castle is classic Aussie comedy

Rabbit proof fence-indigenous film about the stolen generation. Chopper, Pricilla Queen of the desert, strictly ballroom, Two Hands & 2 NZ films i think ud luv.Whale Rider & once were warriors.
upper middle bogan is amazing, definitely give it a watch!
kath and kim is a clear aussie classic, kind of insulting when the US tried to remake it lmao that was absolutely AWFUL.
black comedy is elite, 10/10.
ronny chieng international student is a hilarious watch, hes a stand up comedian and also recommend watching his live shows.
Black comedy I'd hilarious
great shows
Just be yourself, and if you don't know anything, just buy a few tourists guide books about Australia, Australia is coming very political correct,so watch what you say, when you are talking to people, because some might get offended about what you are talking about, speak normal , and be polite, if someone is rude to you please don't be offended, some people are just rude and impolite. Nearly everything is expensive, because of inflation and covid. Come down to Australia and enjoy our culture, and experience it for yourself. 👋💕🇦🇺
No one ever recommends Wolf Creek 🙄😅
I do lol my fave . The movies and the tv show lol
😂
And Wolf Creek 2
@@zalired8925 there’s 3, but who’s counting lmao
@@lillibitjohnson7293 Three? Had no idea, will definitely be on the watch list. Cheers.
You'd get some good laughs out of Upper Middle Bogan. Its really great.
Upright, a Tv series with Tim Minchin. Absolute Gold
Absolutely crap list.
ABC crap....avoid.
