@@nathanisip Annamarie and Kath have been great about including railway content, which even though I'm here for the narrowboating is greatly appreciated. Looking through past videos will find a few "Through the Hedge" videos which feature railways and attached tea rooms, if any. One cruising video even features a preservation steam train crossing the bridge which their boat was just passing beneath. Annamarie did a watercolor of that event. And they have an enameled pin representing the event.
Okay, 1963 would have been during British Railways era. Now, being an American who has long liked UK railways but is no expert on the matter, I'm guessing the locomotive is either an ex-GWR Pannier Tank or is one built to similar design. And in mostly an outright guess, I'm going to guess the carriage which seems to be in overall maroon is from the Mk1 series of BR coaching stock.
Sometimes I wish I were sitting at the towpath on a sunny day, having a cuppa and see my narrowboater fam float by. Lovely seeing you. Cheers and God bless!
I think the river Avon is my favorite cruise you have taken ! So beautiful just lovely. Anna your painting of the ferry and Lazy Days is wonderful. And hello to Captain Kath!
I would stop due to the windy conditions. If you are not in a rush to get somewhere, just have a pause and don't stress. We had to do this several times in the French canals. We would be set up to tie up on the starboard side and the wind would gust and I'd have to scramble for fenders before being up against the port side of the lock. Fond memories. Thanks again for bringing us all along for the ride.
Hello ladies, thank you for another great video. I enjoyed it at the crossing. I work for Amtrak here in the states and I love trains. Have been doing it for almost 16 years. I travel from Los Angeles to Chicago and back, then I drive home to Las Vegas. Absolutely love the painting. Glad you stopped. I don't care for the wind but as you know taking keep going unless the winds are at 50 or more. Then they make us stop. Hugs to both 💕💕
Talking about windy, even though automobile instead of narrowboat, there was one day driving around Virginia Beach in 1980s on a gusty day with all the car windows open, just as I turned my head to see oncoming traffic for a turn, a gust hit at just the right angle to blow my glasses off my face! Fortunately they landed inside the car!
Info: The diamond lock is at Pershore. I remember some friends went to a do in Coventry. When they were asked due to their strange accent, where they had come from, they replied Pershore- which sounded like Persia to the organisers. So they were given the 'Greatest Distance' prize for travelling so far. A free bottle of wine. We had great fun on the community field. I had a heart attack on the 1st of September. You don't take that lying down, but I was fortunately. After four days and two stents I am back home and now have to take more pills and hope to get walking up to 6 miles a day! I did about 200 yds today. Love you girls and your brave trip. Gpx

Especially if there's a nice flood-safe mooring spot where the cats can be out and not too close to a road :) Thanks for taking the time to share, as always!

Have a windy Chadbury lock idea Kath could make in her workshop; what ya need are about a dozen old lawn mower wheels, a lot of clamps, and plywood or sheet metal -- what ya do is make some horizontal wheels to clamp to the gunnels and then you can roll right along the walls in to and out of the lock! And then if you make 2 sets, the boats coming out could roll right along your other side. Brilliant, no? ;D
I love how the steam engine was running backwards :) that was a great piece of footage and comparison with today. Loved the birds standing in the waterfall and it seemed a very pleasant journey apart from the wind.

Great to see another episode from the river Avon. Our river experience (and we have no experience of the canals at all!), is from the Norfolk Broads, where we owned a boat for 10 years and where I grew up. Quite a different experience to the canals, with tides and no locks at all! The chain ferry you passed, reminds me of one we know well, both from the water and by road. It is Reedham Ferry, on the river Yare. www.broadsnet.co.uk/riveryare4/reedham-chain-ferry/. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reedham_Ferry. This one carries cars. Enjoying the vlogs very much 😀. We would only have three days (at most) to get there before we have to turn round. Nice train though, looks like one of those rail motor things where the fireman stays on the engine, but the driver uses the primitive 'cab' at the end of the coach when propelling it. In the US that type of ferry is often called "cable ferry." Several here do use steel cables and are large enough to transport 1-2 passenger cars at a time. There are three in North Carolina, with old gasoline motors for their power (and no braking - throttle and clutching only.) In double checking this I found out that the same state (where I lived for a decade) used to have more ferries and several, like Hannah's Ferry, used the river current for propulsion.
Wow that's scary with the chain under the boat' ...lovely to see the steam engine and coach footage' ...and definitely would have stopped while the wind dies down - bit like cycling in the rain ha ha' ...beautiful painting at the end, really captures the scene. Take good care.
What a fantastic coincidence you could uncover an old film clip to reproduce where you were at that rope ferry. Odd that such a ferry is still in use although I didn't see anyone but the driver/pilot/rower/rope puller on board. It seems to me rivers versus canals are a very personal choice. If I were a regular narrowboat owner I would avoid such tourist traps as Stratford-on-Avon as it seems like the M1 - busy, expensive and over-used. I agree with your philosophy that once in a while makes a change, but canal life at its best is slow, peaceful and quiet. John, Ontario, Canada.

Quite right to call it a day because of the wind - could make things dangerously unpredictable I would think. Poor Annamarie - not fair for them to change the shape of the lock and not tell her!

Avon is, as I suspect you know, an anglicised form of the pre-Roman Celtic word for river. In modern Celtic languages, it's abhainn in Irish, and something similar in Welsh.
As you obviously know by now, the diamond shaped lock is at Wrye Piddle, where the HQ of the Avon Navigation Trust is, it'll be on your next vlog I expect? Where you stopped to escape the wind, at Craycombe Turn, is my favourite mooring on the Avon, a little close too the road, but lovely and peaceful despite that!
It was lovely there’s, I can see why you like it. The road was not too much noise the reason we didn’t stay long was because the road was too close for the cats. Yes ‘real’ diamond lock next week I think.
thank you for the love,i forgot to say in my experience, of a windy day its best to cosy up with a glass of your fav and watch the leaves go by ,big hugs from jenny and dave
Hello Annamarie and kath, ive just subscribed and im starting from the beginning, so far so good, im taking all my pension when im 55 and hoping to buy a narrowboat in 2 yrs to live aboard and go travelling the canals, well thats the plan 🤞😊
You have a very good life .Love to you both. I wish I had your "balls" when ~I was younger. I never had the money to buy a boat , just worked in a factory for pennys . Wish ~I had my time again. All my love to you both . Paulxx
Oh, dear. I live with constant wind. In the desert areas I've lived, we would get 50 mph spring and fall breezes. Here in Texas, if the wind stops blowing, you start looking for a tornado. So, I would have powered on without even realizing I could stop :)
Hi, loved the train going past Evesham. I did a little bit of research as I was watching cruising on cult, blog 112. Where he mentions the diamond geezer which is the diamond lock which you were thinking about. The lock is located between Pershore and Rivermead holiday park, the lock called Wyre Lock. This lock is in a diamond shape I think is the one you’re talking about. I have left a few links just down below which gives you information about the lock itself. I only know this as walk around the area and remember the diamond lock. Wyre lock: canalplan.org.uk/place/dsem nbepiphany.co.uk/108-epiphanys-new-blog/sw/2150-wyre-lock-on-the-river-avon-interesting I hope this helps with your quest for the diamond lock. I think it should be coming up very soon once you’ve heading for Pershore. It between Wyre Piddle and pershore.
When I was younger, we had a log cabin [6" walls] on a lake in northwest Maine. It was 5 1/2 miles across , the wind blew so strong, the curtains in the cabin would move, even when the windows were closed.
That was fun and lovely views. Windy well so long as the boat stays were you want it and you've got to make it to a point in time I would say go for it. Thanks for that film of that branch train. I am so looking into that. I notice he is in Australia as .AU means that it come from there. Thanks again Girls. Keep safe.

Avon is, as I suspect you know, an anglicised form of the pre-Roman Celtic word for river. In modern Celtic languages, it's abhainn in Irish, and something similar in Welsh.
Yes, thanks we do know.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience You've also probably been told many times already, come to think of it.
So the name translates to River River?
Afon in Welsh .. with the A as in Average and the F pronounced as a V (The F sound in W
Welsh is written as FF)
ding dong, avon river calling!
Lovely content❤❤❤
Thanks
As you obviously know by now, the diamond shaped lock is at Wrye Piddle, where the HQ of the Avon Navigation Trust is, it'll be on your next vlog I expect?
Where you stopped to escape the wind, at Craycombe Turn, is my favourite mooring on the Avon, a little close too the road, but lovely and peaceful despite that!
It was lovely there’s, I can see why you like it. The road was not too much noise the reason we didn’t stay long was because the road was too close for the cats.
Yes ‘real’ diamond lock next week I think.
hiya and thank you for your brill blogs, i didn't know there's more than one river named avon, yea never to old to lurn.
thank you for the love,i forgot to say in my experience, of a windy day its best to cosy up with a glass of your fav and watch the leaves go by ,big hugs from jenny and dave
Goes without saying doesn't it. lol
Hello Annamarie and kath, ive just subscribed and im starting from the beginning, so far so good, im taking all my pension when im 55 and hoping to buy a narrowboat in 2 yrs to live aboard and go travelling the canals, well thats the plan 🤞😊
Wonderful
Loved this video. What are geese and swans eating in the weir. Hate the wind...rather sit and paint. Jean from Yreka California.
Me too.
You have a very good life .Love to you both. I wish I had your "balls" when ~I was younger. I never had the money to buy a boat , just worked in a factory for pennys . Wish ~I had my time again. All my love to you both . Paulxx
Sorry to hear that but thank you for watching x
nice vlog
Interesting footage of the swans and geese on the weir
Thanks for noticing
Oh, dear. I live with constant wind. In the desert areas I've lived, we would get 50 mph spring and fall breezes. Here in Texas, if the wind stops blowing, you start looking for a tornado. So, I would have powered on without even realizing I could stop :)
That’s so interesting
Hi, loved the train going past Evesham. I did a little bit of research as I was watching cruising on cult, blog 112. Where he mentions the diamond geezer which is the diamond lock which you were thinking about.
The lock is located between Pershore and Rivermead holiday park, the lock called Wyre Lock. This lock is in a diamond shape I think is the one you’re talking about. I have left a few links just down below which gives you information about the lock itself. I only know this as walk around the area and remember the diamond lock.

I hope this helps with your quest for the diamond lock. I think it should be coming up very soon once you’ve heading for Pershore. It between Wyre Piddle and pershore.
Not a fan of the wind, cross winds have pinned me to the bank before now. Best just moor up.😊
Same here!
When I was younger, we had a log cabin [6" walls] on a lake in northwest Maine. It was 5 1/2 miles across , the wind blew so strong, the curtains in the cabin would move, even when the windows were closed.
Oh my goodness. Sounds very atmospheric
That was fun and lovely views. Windy well so long as the boat stays were you want it and you've got to make it to a point in time I would say go for it.
Thanks for that film of that branch train. I am so looking into that. I notice he is in Australia as .AU means that it come from there.
Thanks again Girls. Keep safe.
Yes, lovely chap too
@@TheNarrowboatExperience just seen his website. Not bad little one.
Your picture of the boat and train over the bridge is in front of me as I text you girls. Thanks. Layer.
Enjoyed the vlog girls, see you next time
Glad you enjoyed it
Diamonds are not forever then apparently 🤔💎❌
Too funny
I love all kinds of weather except those below freezing, so I would probably stay above during wind. Rain, however, is best enjoyed below.
Same here!
Great vlog as usual. Beautiful river. Yes, I would have stopped with that strong wind blowing across too.
What was the website that the fabulous archive steam train film footage was from?
Thanks for keeping us escaping away from the mundanity of life and horrors of what we are all going through right now. All power to you both.
