Absolute STUD. You're incredibly humble when you mention your expierence. Im a 3x Airborne Infantry combat vet from Afghanistan and Iraq. I'd probably sit cross legged listening to your stories all day long. Keep kicking ass and taking names Hero!
Not just the Americans but us foreigners too. I'll start my conscription service in the Finnish defence forces and my primary goal is to become an NCO or reserve officer in the quick reaction forces. Tank warfare is also interesting.
I can’t even imagine going through SFAS and the Q course at 18, the amount of maturity Larry and other guys in that program had must’ve been astounding. I believe the 18X program nowadays requires you to be at least 20 years old
At that time SFAS didn’t exist. It came into existence in early 1988 or maybe late 1987. I’m not exactly sure of the date for the first SFAS class, but the first Q Course class that included SFAS was 01-89. I was in the last class before Selection. Larry may have gone through some kind of selection though as he beat me into SF by roughly 7 years, though I never tried out, much less went to SFOD-D.
There wasn't even an 18-series Career Management Field until later in the 1980s. Light Weapons Sergeants were 11BS. SF Engineer Sergeants were 12BS if I recall. SF Medics were 91BS who went to the 300F1 Medic Course starting at Fort Sam Houston, then went to finish the other half at the lab at Bragg. Commo guys had another MOS as well.
I think partly high IQ. Had the temperament. Probably right that the jr. SF was phased out for the reasons, but there were seventeen year olds storming the beaches on D-day. Some quality young men are always ready to step up.
Extremely well done, Sir!! That is probably one of the best...and most humble...stories I have heard a man tell about his amazing life. One who has sacrificed so much for America. You truly are the embodiment of a 'Gun Guy' and the gun community.
Do it! Stay safe out there of course. Whatever happens, you'll be stronger for it. Us non fighters have your back. We'll make you the best rations, we'll press the cleanest bullets, design the best night vision and give non-verbal cues to the hottest women in the room that you are the man. And then we'll send you up to fight the most dangerous and evil people on earth. Sorry about that last part.
I need to echo what Larry said about jumping on the opportunity when it's there, right then. Life gets complicated right quick-like, youngbloods! I reclassed to 11B when I was 31 and I damn sure wish I would have done it when I was 18!
Larry I have nothing but the greatest respect for you and extreme jealousy for all the firearms and manufacturers you have access to. If most people knew how much of your input has gone into the production of newer firearms. Keep on keeping on.
Great Story. My grandfather served near or assigned to the Rangers in Italy and North Africa during WW2. He was an amazing man as I am sure is the same with your father.
Larry, I watch alot of your videos I think because I associate you with a mutual friend of ours who didn't make it home from Somalia. I remember dropping E___ off at Sicily in the middle of the night so he could ruck home many times. I am glad you are still around to help train folks in the proper use of a firearm and to enjoy it! I have rejoined the shooting world as my kids have pretty much left the house so looking forward to learning all that I have missed! Thanks Brother!
LV, I really respect what you achieved at the age of 18. The level of maturity and mental strength you need for this is off the charts. I’m a simple R.O. First Lieutenant in the Army of my country and I started at 27. Stay strong Larry, we love what you do!
Thank you for your courage, dedication, & service LAV. I was down in Panama before & during Operation Just Cause. God bless you and your family brother.
Wow. I've followed you for years Mr. Vickers and I never knew the minor details of your service. Having grown up and spent all of my life in the Youngstown, OH area I never knew you were originally from Ohio and served in the reserves here. Thank you for everything you've done and thank you for all the excellent content and information you put out there.
Thank you Larry for everything you have done for this great Country, and for me. I have a great amount of respect for you, and every other person that has served in our military. God bless
At the beginning you said thank you. Hell the thanks go to you and all the operators that do what they do. Youre a very special person Mr. Vickers and we should all consider ourselves lucky to share your stories. Thank you
Thanks Larry for your service, you are absolutely correct you have a small window as a Young individual to shoot for the stars. As ex military I can assure you wished I had done more in my time in the Army. Once again always enjoy your channel.
Great respect for your service to our nation, and always enjoy your videos. Really enjoyed hearing how you decided about your direction early. Keep up your good work.
Hey Larry as an 11B for 4 years with 13 months spent in the sandbox I can tell hot that I always thought of the Delta Ninjas as those cool kids in high school you’d never get to hangout with but anytime they talked to you, it made your day. Even non-CAG SF guys were like super heros to me. We had the 3rd SF group come through our COP for a week and I tried to absorb as much information and wisdom from them as I could. They were a humble squared away group of apex predators and they left an impact on the way I viewed the SF.
Great story Larry. You are absolutely correct about that "window" that leads to your future if you are ready when it opens. I was not and the rest, as they say, is history.
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE SIR! I'd love to hear some of your craziest combat stories, or "close calls" if you're willing to tell us peasents about such harrowing events. Thank you so much for this Mr.Vickers i really hope you guys can do more of these types of videos, Pat Mcnamera, George Hand, Mike vining have really interesting interviews ranging from operations in haiti too sudan too bosnia and the list goes on. Thank you for your sacrifice and service. This is some of the toughest training on the planet and very few make it so this is a testament to your drive and ability. I am just a bit older than you went the army aviation route had good times as a crew chief. Funny how the military is held to a higher standard when we take the oath that all public service personal take compared to politicians. Hence why we are in the situation we are in now. Wish you well and many more years of passing on your knowledge. I have one of your glock 17 Vickers pistols models one of my favorite.
As an ex-Army 12 bravo I love reading military autobiographies and history books. Ever since joining this channel I always wanted a book about Larry's career. Make it happen somebody.
As always Larry nice video. Your name first came to me in American Hangunner magazine. Articles of your custom 1911's blew me away. Names like yours and Clint Smith, Coronel Cooper are always going to be ledgends in the gun industry. Thanks for your service, and all you do for the gun industry.
It really hit home when Larry gave that bit of advice on taking advantage of opportunities as soon as they present themselves. I’m 32 years old and was talking to my Dad about a month ago and told him, “You know, my biggest regret in life is not trying to re-enlist in the national guard.” When I was 18 I had signed up to join the National Guard and went to MEPS to take my ASVAB and my physical. I scored really high on my ASVAB and that went well, but I failed my UA on the physical because I had a substance abuse problem at that age and that was it. They said I could re-enlist after 6 months or a year or something but I never did. So now that I’m going to be 32 years old in June I just assumed I was too old to sign up and that window of opportunity was gone. And I regretted it BIG TIME. Well, turns out I’m not too old to enlist in the National Guard. So I’m giving myself this summer to get in better shape and to study up for my ASVAB a bit, then on Sept. 1st I’m going into the recruiters office and I’m signing back up.
The advice on time, opportunity and windows is excellent. Hindsight is always 20/20 and non-repeatable. BTW: I own all the coffee table books, beatiful and very informative...well done!
Can't thank you enough for your service Mr Vickers, and all the brave men and women for that matter that have served this great country. Larry, really respect what you did for our country. Delta is the pinnacle
Robert Blake you’re right but Delta has been described as US’s most tactical elite combat group
I think he means pineapple.
@Robert Blake you do realize Delta is the best of the best. The select from Green berets, Ranger units, hell they even had a Navy Seal.
Yeah Delta was the best but that changed... Get it? It is a math joke or Greek joke?
The US military has been a tremendous force of evil in the world.
Get well soon Larry... I am praying for you.
