ok here's the rundown my kaukko bag ripped on the side and was completely unusable, also the bag started to rip at the bottom of the computer pocket. The whole soon spread to the larger pocket. So, in my opinion, the kaukko bag only lasted around 7 months. So good luck with choosing which one you want.
I've had a Hercshal little America backpack for over 6 years and apart from 1 lost button and cosmetic wear on the straps it's still perfectly intact. I carry groceries in it and often fill it to capacity. I feel like any other cheaper backpack wouldn't have faired as well. I'm really surprised by how sturdy it's been.
You got to understand that there is a lot more built into the price rather than just the materials used. Herschel has a more extensive channel where retailers also need to make a cut in the profits. Herschel also has a lot more marketing expenses. And finally you are paying a premium for the Herschel brand name. Probably 20-30% increase just because of the brand name.
My Herschel backpack has lasted me through grade 8 to graduation. It’s still going strong today in my first year of post secondary. It’s also been through multiple textbooks, sometimes 2-3 at a time. One time I weighed it and it was about 25-27 pounds, I was amazed. The stitching and craftsmanship is great
Construction : wrap-round panel - vs - 3 panels = less stitching and thus less likelihood of water getting in. The Herschel probably stands up better to wet weather. The top of the Herschel bag comes further down giving better protection of the contents and helps keeps the bag in a nice shape, making up for the difference in structure/form you get with using panels. The front pockets are different too: the bottom of the Kaukko front pocket stands out, whereas on the Herschel, the bottom of the external front pocket is taken into the seam on the main pouch. In other words, the Herschel pocket should be stronger, the Kaukko one is basically a patch pocket thus more stitching on the front, greater possibility of water getting in. It'd have been helpful to see comparative testing of the resistance of the fabric to cutting, tearing, abrasion, water and flame testing. I have the Little America, albeit a recent purchase and yes, it was expensive, but the quality seems to be there. If the Kaukko comes up to scratch, for half the price, that would be interesting. This comparison is interesting but a more technical and even invasive test would be more convincing, one way or another.
I honestly like the design of the Kaukko more both because of the external and internal pockets, but also because of it's more squared off shape. The Hershel is made of 600D polyester as well, according to their RUclips video on the bag, so it's not surprising that the two bags feel the same.
Kaukko straps last longer, plus you get it half the price of Herschel and Kaukko made in Oregon, USA. I have seen many people with Herschel backpacks and straps that look destroyed after a couple of years but my Kaukko straps look like new. Kaukoo straps feel like real leather compared to Herschel's thin fabric straps. Kaukko comes with two outside side pockets (your umbrella and water bottle) Herschel doesn't have it. I am not even saying that Herschel cost twice more haha I love both backpacks and it is silly to speak about which one is better, this is like the Samsung VS Apple debate. You buy whichever you like and be happy, peace.
My Hershel little america came in perfect condition when it comes to construction stitching was on point there wasn't nothing wrong about my backback that I can complain probably because I bought it directly from there website also happy to know that my backpack from Hershel comes with limited lifetime warranty
thanks for this video! Although morally I would rather support the designers of herschel for this awesome looking backpack, I am very poor so I chose the kaukko due to this video! When I graduate I will buy a herschel

I HAD a Hershel (until it got stolen, long story) but it was over a year old and still looked new. I used it at school, and I spilled stuff on the inside more than once... my stupid mistake, not the bags. I did like the internal water bottle pocket, because I've had other bags and the water bottle has fallen out more than once. I highly DOUBT your Chinese ripoff bag will make it a year, they NEVER do. My Hershel looked like I had just bought it after a year...
No, not really. There is little to no copyright laws in China. So, what many factories do is that they copy the exciting design, make some improvements, re brand and sell it. It might as well be that these backpacks are made in the same exact place. The 70 extra dollars you're spending is really going towards the brand name.
Satinkuti and a higher quality product. It’s cheaper in more ways than one. I said it before and I’ll say it again; I highly doubt your ripoff copied design bag will be around in a year. You get what you pay for.
@@david78212 Been around 2 years now, for 35usd that is a bargain. In store i did not find any difference between herchell and kaukko other than some minor tweaks. Material is the same. Herchell is made in china just so you know. :D
Satinkuti I know, there isn’t much that is not made in China... and the off brand one you bought may be made in the same factory. I’ve seen enough reviews about “off brand” stuff not making past the first year of ownership, to not waste my money and deal with a disappearing warranty. Good for you, I choose NOT to buy stuff on a chance that may or may not be a decent quality from a company that may be gone next week. Personal choice and I doubt you can convince me anymore than I could convince you. Good day.
