  • Ok, so maybe not epic, but a fun build and I’m happy with the results!
Alligator snapping turtles (Macrochelys) are a protected species, and possession in most states is prohibited by law. I hold a state DNR license to use these turtles for educational purposes. They are not “pets”, and they are not for sale*

@charlescaldwell1691 snagging turtles tend to go, or at least try to, where they want to go. Mine used to knock down the cave hide I made for her instead of going out the entrance. My advice is to either get use to it, or secure it stronger so it can't be knocked down.

Simply Beautiful. Are you in Georgia? I just made a pond few months ago and I found a huge snapping turtle. He well I think he is a he. He was walking across a busy street I picked him up and took him home. I have had him for about 6 months now and I have another snapper. I think the other one might be a female. Much smaller and much younger.

Amazing build, Greg. The only thing I can suggest is to put a bubbler at the bottom of the pond to oxygenate the water and control anaerobic bacteria growth. It's amazing how a small bubbler helps balance an aquarium, it might do the same thing for an outdoor pond. Besides, the turtles love it!

    • @GregsTurtleHaven

Hey Greg in 1992-93 midsummer July- August traveling on a back road 55 60 miles an hour coming home from work early to beat some of the summer heat 3:30 in the afternoon a giant alligator snapping turtle comes walking out of the woods onto the road. I stopped right in front of the turtle in the middle of the road nothing on the road but me my truck and the turtle. I jump out of my truck in the middle of the road I don't even shut my door so I can stand next to this dinosaur and follow next to it across the road. Its head was the same size as yours no BS. Its shell had to be more than 40 in long. I'm a bricklayer I use a 4 ft level all day long. You we need a forklift to pick this animal up off the road. It was about ninety-five degrees at the time and the turtle crossd the road and disappeared Into the Woods and brush in 30 seconds. What a amazing rush. I decided to leave a word out. I nicknamed him or her Godzilla. I imagine this animal hunting, killing and eating cottontail rabbits. It cross the road on a slop more than 50 yards from water.

My red ear sliders and painted turtles females will become egg bound if they can’t nest, I believe the same of yours.?? Even if unfertilized they must be able to nest or they can die. You have the area but you you made it sound like an option, they must be able to get out and lay eggs, if egg bearing age. And don’t they need fish to eat, unless eating fish food ( which mine do) so if you put fish in then you definitely need a filter sooner then later. Mine all live with Koi and all get along. They winter at the bottom with the koi. You could look into adding bentonite clay ( chips or powder, ) it will settle in the hole and seal it up if there ever is a problem. Something to keep in the back of your mind. My turtles never dig at the bottom, they don’t have a reason to, so you should be fine. Once the turtles accept the pond is theirs they shouldn’t try and look for their old pond. Just keep an eye on wanderers, especially little ones.
