    Pond is stellar! Absolutely awesome video!! Alligator snappers are in the 100lb+ club with Chitra (300lbs), Rafetus (392lbs), Podocnemis expansa (200lbs), Pelochelys bibroni (250lbs), and a wealth of others. You and Greg take care of alligator snappers better than anyone else or institution I’ve ever seen!

    Sir, just a humble suggestion. Cement tends to increase the pH value of the water body, but alligator snapping turtles prefer mildly acidic environment. The TDS level is also likely to be increased. So it might be a good idea to monitor the chemical environment of the enclosure continuously and make adjustments accordingly.

    If only everyone did keeping like you guys, don’t get the animal unless you KNOW you can give it everything it needs, the enclosure size, the time, the money, the ability to enrich that animals life, otherwise, leave them in the wild where they belong!

    Really interested in the winter conditions. I have my common snappers in large stock tanks but still indoors. I would love to make an outdoor setup as we have a large farm and space isn't an issue. My biggest concern is depth and conditions for winter survival. I'm in Massachusetts and similar winters to NJ. Did your depth work for you?

    great build I have always wanted to build a huge habitat for one of these guys as well. Wife shoots me down every time. By any chance your male did he come from a guy that was in Philly? You said that he came from living in a basement? I knew a guy that had a big male loving in his basement a few years ago.

    Chris, this may seem like a stupid question but why use a pond liner and underlayment instead of just digging the hole in the ground and filling it with water and planting some plants and grasses? Is it because you want to be able to see them?

    • @josh.kaptur
      @josh.kaptur 3 года назад

      unless you have pure clay, the pond won't hold water... especially in their sandy NJ soil. The rock/cement approach they took is nowhere close to water-tight.

    I’m from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and I have a few ponds outside my house. We get cold, snowy winters here. I put heaters in my ponds in the winter. Can I put a heater in a pond with an Alligator Snapper or should I make arrangements to have him moved inside for the winter? Also do they hibernate?

    • @GardenStateTortoise
      @GardenStateTortoise  3 года назад

      Good question, I think you may do just fine. This species is incredibly cold tolerant. Water depth is important though.

      If you watch the “Turtles Under Ice” journal entry and the full episode called “Turtles, Tortoises and Hibernation” I recently posted, I show plenty of underwater footage of how they’re doing during the winter.

    I have a quarter acre pond on my 5 acres.i would love to introduce some native turtles, but I know it has common snappers. Would several species of turtle coexist? I understand resource competition and overpopulation concerns. How do I do a census? Ok, stop laughing....I am serious. Is there a way? I have heard a raft or partially sunken log for basking gives an opportunity for observation, but for snappers that do not (?) bask, I am unsure of how to judge my population. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you for your diligence.
