Zeitgeist is so underrated, and there are songs on that album (definitely including this one) that deserve to stand proudly alongside all of the greatest classic songs of Billy's Pumpkins.
This is one of the better songs for sure, but I really don't think the album itself was very good, sleigh it did have a handful of great songs. Bleeding, That's The Way, Steller, Tarantula and a few other decent ones. But really, songs like Pomp, God and Country, United States were really not well written compared to Corgans past stuff and even much of his modern stuff.
That's what I'm saying! Seriously, Doomsday Clock, Bleeding the Orchid, and United States are three of my top 25 pumpkins songs of all time, and the rest of the album is awesome too.
I was in the audience. Most people didn’t know James and D’arcy weren’t in the band and were a bit dissapointed. They also played almost half of Zeitgeist which almost no one heard at that point and as an encore they did half an hour of Gossamer. It was my first TSP concert and I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Linkin Park played right before them on the same stage and they were very hot at that time so it was challenging for most people to see TSP as a festival closer. Luckily nowadays people are waking up and discovering that Zeitgeist is actually very good!
I wish I'd seen them then. My only two shows were 1997 when they were still playing mellon collie and my younger brother didn't know the songs.. then i saw them in 2011 and knew every song except the Oceania stuff. Anybody that goes to a sp or wpc show better be prepared to hear and appreciate new songs
1:22 I love how Billy Corgan moves here. So cool. Great song and performance. The line up, the clothes they all wear, and the music of course. Very cool.
Thank you for posting this amazing song. This is one of Smashing Pumpkins best song I don't care what anyone says zeitgeist is a great album and in ten years people will learn to like it like they did Adore.
as much as I love Billy, Jimmy Chaimberlin is the one concrete piece of the pumpkins that consistently rocks. Billy's got his hubris, James has his grievances, D'arcy has her substances.... Jimmy is just consistantly fantastic
bro pls shut up about darcys substance issues…almost every rockstar goes through a rough patch w drugs, and we all know what happened with jimmy. i love jimmy ofc hes one of the greatest drummers ever and a great guy but you just can’t shit on darcy for her issues and then ignore jimmys… they have both recovered so leave it alone no?
Personally I think that people kind of expected an album more in vain of Mellon Collie or Siamese Dream, which is ridiculous because Billy Corgan has never written the same album twice, which is why I admire him so; but because Zeitgeist was such a drastic departure from what the Pumpkins are remembered most for, the album failed. I definitely think the absence of Iha and Wretzky played a huge part too, although I think if Billy had written Siamese Dream 2 he wouldn't have taken so much flack.
I think what killed Zeitgeist was the cloud of no D'arcy and Iha. Also the fact that Billy was really unaware of the change in landscape as far as music was concerned. He has since adjusted his approach. But the great music remains his goal!
As a fan I could get over no Iha or Wretzky. What I didn't like was the monotonous quality of Zeitgeist, it was very harsh in production approach and lacked the soft pretty side of SP. It's the polar opposite of Adore. That said 2007 was a weird time in rock music no matter how u slice it SP would not have been as relevant. Now they have come around because their legacy is so enduring and ppl realize how special if a band they are.
Admittedly this live version doesn't convey the might and bass heavy sludge of the album recording, but god damn I love this song. Great album top to bottom
Schecter C-1EX Baritone i think is the model name. Pickups replaced with Tony Iommi signature humbuckers. Neither of these are sold anymore, but Schecter makes baritones with the same shape and i’m sure you could find some Sabbath type humbuckers somewhere (or look for humbuckers that are like p90s).
I mean, so am I lol. You can't compare his studio guitar much to his live guitar sound, dude.. I mean, how effects and overdubs are influencing the sound live vs in studio? You just can't compare them much. It definitely DOES sound like he's using a chorus pedal just amping some of the weird settings on it to make it warbly.

+macabregemini Word up!

the recorded album version is so much better though.
The first half of the album is great but loses it's way in the 2nd.
Best comment ever
RIP layne staley ❤️
2023, still here when im in bad mood.
One of the best Smashing Pumpkins songs hands down.
Right??
It’s dedicated to Layne Staley
Billy Corgan is such a badass guitar player, composition, person. I mean I respect a lot of musicians but Billy is so under rated for his talent
Best drummer in the world
There's nothing better than this! I can't break out of the pumpkin.
That's what I'm saying! Seriously, Doomsday Clock, Bleeding the Orchid, and United States are three of my top 25 pumpkins songs of all time, and the rest of the album is awesome too.
zac abid doom's day clock, bleeding the orchid and tarantula are my faves from this album...

Thank you for posting this amazing song. This is one of Smashing Pumpkins best song I don't care what anyone says zeitgeist is a great album and in ten years people will learn to like it like they did Adore.
Well, it's 9 years since the release, and Zeitgeist still doesn't have much of a cult following
At least not like Adore
@@joywolfe. He said 10 John,wait for it.
Prophetic! I think people are finally waking up.
❤
This song is a living entity!
That was awesome!!!
One of my favs from the pumpkins

One of the best on Zeitgeist.
Miss these five together.

Great song!

sounds so much better live then on the album
Trow in Neverlost and that the best of the best from Zeitgeist. Have you heard Oceania? It's so good!
Cool outfit he's wearing in this video.
agreed!!
🖤 (2022)
Yea Oceania's great too, and it's great to see the Pumpkins getting a little respect in the press too.
Sick!!!
so less video of this Pinkpop show... can only find 1 more

It's like he's stuck in the 90's.

That fucking solo...... holy shit
Best song from Zeitgeist?
Acho que o Billy espiritualizou suas músicas e conseguintemente os Smashing pumpikins assim com Max Cavalera, numa época, espiritualizou o Sepultura.
Dat solo... or should I say, dem solos.
3 min 50 aussi
Admittedly this live version doesn't convey the might and bass heavy sludge of the album recording, but god damn I love this song. Great album top to bottom
Ok no it's Ginger Pooley, aha SP sure has some sexy bassists, and songs!
Is that Nicole Fiorentino? Whover she is, she looks beautiful... Very nice song too!
Nicole came later (look for videos around 2011 or 2012, she’s playing there), this is Ginger Pooley. Fukn ripper player.
The audience is bloody dead! If I was there I'd be stamping on heads!
Well i would assume almost the whole audience is extremely baked or on something. it is the smashing pumpkins so it's only right lol
What kind of guitar is billy playing?
Schecter C-1EX Baritone i think is the model name. Pickups replaced with Tony Iommi signature humbuckers. Neither of these are sold anymore, but Schecter makes baritones with the same shape and i’m sure you could find some Sabbath type humbuckers somewhere (or look for humbuckers that are like p90s).
Sucks that Billy Corgan listened to the vocal idiots claiming Zeitgeist sucks. It doesn't.
Mm
The songs on the album are actually really good it's just the horrible production and Billy's vocals being way too loud that ruin it
The guitar sounds out of tune, which gives the song kind of a weird, cool dreamy effect, but I wish it was more in tune!
that's a chorus pedal, it's meant to do that
David Chamberlain The studio recording had plenty of chorus and didn't sound like this. I'm a guitar player btw
It is definitely a bit more noticable here than on the recording. Especially during solos
It’s done on purpose w a chorus effect. He used that sound a lot circa 2005-08. You can hear it on The Future Embrace and Zeitgeist
Schon ziemlich lässig durchgezogen...
