Very good video thank you for posting. I used a bunch of 3/8 extensions for the top bolt. I appreciate you going over the order to hook stuff up before lifting the transmission. I don’t have a transmission jack but I took one of the floor jacks and strapped a piece of plywood to it to support the transmission from the pan. Not the safest but it works.
Good job. It took me 20min to put mine on by my self but I bought the harborfreight transmission jack it worked really good it tilts and everything. It also helped I had the intake manifold off.
Great video! I just re-installed my rebuilt 4L60E into my 02 Z71 pickup. I ended up having to use a socket extension that was over 3 feet long with a swivel in the middle to get to those upper bell housing bolts and torque them to specs. It was a pain but I finally got it!
I just finished installing a 4L60E in my 2001 Yukon RWD. The one i pulled out seemed to be a factory build. The one I installed is a differner unit, and i upgraded some of the parts. Do i need to hook up a scan tool and reteach?
Thank you for your videos Steve. You had some great views that helped me understand what I was getting into to do my rear main seal. Note: If you remove the front cross member, you can tilt the transmission just a little more down. This allows you to get a long extension + wiggle joint on your socket. As they came loose, I had enough room to reach in from the output shaft end to remove various nuts and brackets. But hopefully you won't have to do this again.
I hope that you cleaned out the cooler lines and cleaned the radiator beforehand. Otherwise dirty transmission fluid can enter and ruin all your hard work. TIP: Installing a Transmission Cooler in low cost insurance for your new transmission. Heat buildup is a major cause of transmission failure.
These transmissions don't normally break from heat issues the problems usually are from the shift solenoids or from the planetary drum inside the transmission it's years away from the entire piece and there's one other but I can't remember what it is but it's not heat cooling is not a problem with these
Im a starting mechanic I wouldn't have installed my trans if it wasnt for your awesome series of videos Thanks..too bad i80 auto parts gave me a bad one and i performed this 3 times
Looks like you were able to get the transmission w/ belhousing out and back in from under the vehicle to clear the underbody frame of the truck. How high did you have to jack up the vehicle. I have a stock 04 model which is fairly low to the ground. Only thing holding me up from starting this project is concern of how high i can get the vehicle jacked up in the garage safely.
Hey how do you know if you’re stall still good when taking out transmission and how much do you think something like this would cost to install a transmission
My advise to the do it yourself types who drive used cars like me, get a car lift!! I got one ten years ago, paid for itself in no time!!! I consider it free now and I can't imagine not having it now!!
Just bought a Tahoe, won't shift to 2nd just drives on 1st so I only go 30mph. My mechanic is recommending I install a new transmission. 2500$ installed. Is it a deal? Should I just rebuild it?
If you mean rebuild it yourself, sure - if you know how. I did not rebuild mine. I took it out and took it to a professional to do the rebuild. Then I put it back in myself. In my opinion rebuilding an automatic transmission is way more difficult than rebuilding an engine. I will never try to do it myself. To many moving parts, valve body, check balls an other tiny parts make me very nervous.
I got a price of 750 for used at junkyard tested, with 149000 on it or if I go to to parts store 1600 for rebuilt with 3 year warranty, but that's doing it yourself
Thanks for the kind words. Now - I am NO tranny tech, but I'm pretty sure the entire transmission and torque converter must be removed to access the pump. Once you go this far, you might as well do a rebuild kit.
@@TahoeSteve thanks so much for for reaching out to me, I appreciate you. I just had a new transmission put in my car one week later same problem. Today I'm being told I need a new transmission oil pump. Should that have been replaced with the new transmission? I'm confused. Have a great day, and thanks so much.
@@TahoeSteve ... I want to install long tube headers but my concern is the catalitic converter's . I'm in Las Vegas Nevada. So I need to pass smog. I also don't want any check engine lights. Should've swapped it out for a 4L80-E instead. The 60s were trash, they'll keep failing. An 80 is a direct swap, plus it is tons more durable (a little heavier, too). GM can't seem to produce a very good automatic transmission.
i read up on it, did not seem like a direct swap from what I saw. I agree with you though - If I ever put a blower on it, I'll have to suck it up and figure out the 4L80 swap
The computer the runs that 4l60 will not run a 4l80. The wire harness connecter will not fit it either and the '80 has two speed sensors the '60 does not have.
There is nothing wrong with 4l60e, mines lasted 346k mi, but it's not a HD tranny. Many guys try to pull with a 1500 like a 2500HD blow the tranny and then blame tranny.
Go from the top bro it's so easy quarter inch ratchet 13 mm short stubby little socket it pops right off through and then you move the hoses out of the way and say something 15 mm behind that pop that right off it's so much easier going from the top just remove your Vortec engine cover its 8 mm bolt sample simple shed
@@davidchavez8079 and also...pass fender well pop it off. Look between frame rail and engine and cab. The side ones r easier to get right there with stunby ratchet. I jus did an allison trans swap in 6 hrs. No power tools.

I would have stubbed my toe, lost 3 bolts, wired the wrong connections, hit my head, tried to fight the truck, said fuck it, called the transmission shop for a quote.
I thought it was funny when you said don’t do it alone and I’m doing it alone but anyone I got the old one pulled and new one installed with a car jack but the vent tube idk where that plugs into and don’t want to just leave it out please help

thought about cutting that part out for the same reason, but it was necessary
My deepstick tube is leaking and its loose do i need to hit in some more where i cant see the little groove

Did u ever find out I just saw my tahoe has that hose hanging down??

Vacuum line. Hookup. On a. Trans the vacuum on a 4 L 60 e where on the motor does it go
If I remember correctly, there is a place to put the hose connector on top of the trans.
I used some rebar and a jack lifted it up set it on some bars across my lift bars and then moved it with my knees by myself
That's insane. I had trouble with a trans jack.

Hey Steve. I was thinking of installing some shorty headers. Do you think that's a good idea or just keep the stock manifold on?
The stock exhaust manifolds are actually very efficient so I would go long tubes or not at all.

They must make a conversion, or it must not be too hard. People swap the 4l80 in place of the 60.
