Great, informative video. I like your attention to safety and how you try to give as much info as possible. A couple things I found out the hard way: 1. If the old trans went out, you need to flush the oil cooler with brake cleaner and compressed air or it can fill your newly rebuilt transmission with junk. 2. Lube the back of the crank with grease before you stick the torque converter in there. This allows the converter to move forward and back as the flexplate flexes. 3. Put the exhaust above the crossmember but don’t attach it until you put the inside bolt on the driver’s side in the crossmember or the bolt will have to go in backwards from the rest. 4. If you installed a new converter too, when you bolt it to the flexplate, make sure there is less than 3/16” gap between them. If not, you will need washers to close the gap. 5. Depending on the year, the starter wires are too short to install until the starter is mounted. Your video on removing the hot glue connectors on the neutral safety switch saved me a huge headache! Those tubes are an absolute pain in the butt, I’ve had to lower a transmission and raise it back into place with someone specifically guiding that tube LOL
I can’t get my dipstick to sit flush with the transmission pan. Is there supposed to be about an inch of slack ? Or is the tube supposed to be flush with pan?
Got another question brother, do you have a video on flushing the tranny cooler lines, its being rebuilt right now,I'd just like to flush the lines out before putting it back in..thx
Great video man. Your patience is shown in your mannerism and in your voice. It shows that youve been doing this for years.. Unfortunately, still over my head. I woulnt dare try this myself. If i had an extra car, i would , Unfortunately its my daily driver and cannot be without a car for to long.
Nice video. Would you do anything differently if you did it again? I have a 05 4x4 Yukon 5.3L. 233,000 miles. Looking to get a used cheap broken 4L60/65/70 to rebuild with my teen as a DIY learning project. To have ready. I found a used one for $60, with nothing but Reverse working. Thanks!
Hey man I have a question. I’m putting the bolt back in the flex plate and torque converter and as I was threading in the first one I heard and felt the torque converter slide forward. Is that ok?
So I just finished installing my rebuilt transmission in my 2001 Yukon 5.3 RWD. Do I need to hook up a scan tool and reteach, or am I good to go? The one that I pulled seems to have been a factory build, and the one that I installed is a different one that I upgraded some of the parts, both being 4L60Es.
These videos give me all the confidence.. imma switch my tranny out with a decent used one then rebuild the one I take out just to gain the skills to do it.. and save me idk 2 grand..
@@dudewecanfixit I thought the same thing, but that wasn't it. it was the flywheel hitting the cover because it was bent 😂 it's running great now except it won't shift into park. It shifts to park but the dash P doesn't light up and it still rolls idk what's wrong 🤔
First, turn the truck off and chock the wheels. Try disconnecting the shifter linkage cable and manually moving the linkage on the transmission forward into the park position and see if that keeps it from rolling. Also, the light could be the park neutral safety switch not adjusted correctly.
Great video!! Thank you guys!! I recently gad my trainny replace at a shop. When driving home I noticed my airbag light was on. Are there any airbag wires or harnesses that you guys know off which might have been left disconnected on top or anywhere near trans????
Real quick tho, got everything together and back on the truck. I shifted thru the gears like you did, but I don't have Reverse.. before I take it off the truck again, would you have an idea of what could be the problem?
Great videos!! Hey I like your hammer! I bet that hammer is older than you guys haha. It's like every toolbox has a old tool from dad, grandpa etc. Keep up the great work !
You can get the top center bolt from the engine bay. Behind the back along the firewall. Where a distributor would have been located. Soooo much easier.
Is there a cover that goes over the inspection hole in the bellhousing where you where moving the torque converter with your finger? Or is the hole just open? Thanks
I been studying this video and the other one I'm about take one out of my 97 chevy pickup I just need a kick start and for it cool down a little lol thanks for the video I hope it it helps me
Major Question for my install: I broke my dipstick trying to remove it before. The old housing at the bottom will not come out! Is there any harm in removing the tranny pan to push the pieces out and then reassemble it? Is there a better way than that? I would very much appreciate any help any of you could give!!!
I lost connection from the TCM to the ECM on my Tahoe, my car had caught on fire and it burned some of the wires. Not sure if it got to any of the wires that have to do with the transmission connection but do I have to remove the crossmember and my starter just to get to the transmission connectors? Also, how much should it cost for somebody to check the connectors for me?
Good video but does anybody know where the ground wire goes bolted to, my mechanic went MIA in the middle of my transmission job and I’m trying to finish installing it myself?
@@dudewecanfixit it’s a steel braided looking ground wire hanging there and I’m thinking it probably goes ground to one of the transmission bolts but I real don’t?
Watch your RPMs and count your shift points. You should have four shift points. 1st to 2nd gear 2nd to 3rd gear 3rd to 4th gear Torque converter lockup (about a 200 rpm drop) once you are cruising.
Hey dudes! Thank you for this awesome video! I followed along your removal video and it was awesome, this one is a life saver especially you saying what each bolt size is because I have a bucket of bolts and I don't remember where any of them go! 😂😂😂😂
I see your from the busted knuckle garage. Took me a while too to stop using my ratchet handle like that. Think it was slipping off a nut and punching a sharp edge crossmember that finally did it.
How do I know if the transmission from my 1999 yukon will fit in my 2002 tahoe? They are both 4L60E transmissions and both are 2WD. I was told that not all 4L60E transmissions are the same. My yukon jas the 5.7L engine and my 2002 tahoe has the 5.3L engine. Thanks for any information.
As far as I know, they should be interchangable. The differences could simply be internal and not affect the compatibility. You could Google search "4l60 changes by year" and see if that yields better results
love your videos...quick question is a 4l60E transmission from 2000 to 2005 2WD compatible with green connector and torque converter, neutral safety switch....thanks in advance
@7:56 my torque converter has a quarter in gap between the the flywheel, bolts don't start threading, is this normal, to have to pull TC to the flywheel?
Once you have the transmission installed onto the engine you must verify that the torque converter remained fully seated into the front pump during the transmission installation. You should observe 1/8” (.125”) to 3/16” (.187”) of air gap between the torque converter mounting pads and flexplate before sliding the converter forward to attach it to the flexplate. If you have 1/8” - 3/16” air gap then you may proceed with sliding the torque converter forward and attaching it to the flexplate. If you have less than 1/8” air gap then you may not have the torque converter fully seated into the front pump. This will require disassembly and verification of proper torque converter installation. If you have more than 3/16” air gap then you may install high quality flat washers between the mounting pads and flexplate to shim the converter to the correct air gap dimension of 1/8” - 3/16”. NEVER shim the converter to eliminate all air gap. Running the torque converter in a fully shimmed condition WILL result in damage to the front pump gear set, front pump stator body, torque converter pump hub, and may even cause damage to the internal torque converter components as well as the crankshaft thrust bearing.
hey guys, you have helped me do 2 transmissions swaps at home . i ran into a problem , the bottom 2 bell housing bolts have stripped threads. is there a way to fix ? thanks in advance
I added a half quart before I installed the torque converter. Get the other bolts snug first and then let the jack down a little too get more access to the top bolts
What is the process if your torque converter is bound up. My transmission isn’t wanting to sit flush against my engine and I think that’s the issue maybe
It sounds like your torque converter is not seated all the way. Move the transmission back and try to get the torque converter to seat further. Rotate and push until it clicks down further
Hey thankyou for this video it helped a ton! One question, one of my bolts on the bottom of the trans striped a little and won't go all the way in. Will it be fine to leave it like that? All of the other bolts are good.
I have a ? Just bought a 2002 escalade came with good motor 6.0 vortex.but transmission is gone... I have a 04 escalade motor bad 6.0 but the transmission was rebuilt about a year ago. I'm trying to find out is the 02 escalade transmission compatible with the 04 escalade transmission as far as bolt pattern, lines, torque, etc. So will the 02 escalade transmission be compatible with the 04 escalade transmission... Your advice will be very helpful
I replaced my rear main seal...doing the job by myself everything worked out except.... I pulled the Neutral safety switch so I wouldn't break it and all the gears lined up on the column and it starts in Neutral and in Park but it won't go into any gear? Is the shift linkage in need of adjustment I didn't mess with the linkage or what? Help!!
That's interesting. I don't think the safety neutral switch would keep your vehicle from going in gear once it is already started. May need to adjust the linkage somehow
Nice how to video but what about Torque Converter 'setback''? I've always set as close as possible to 0.125". Do you do the same or something different?
@@dudewecanfixit I mean the distance the torque converter rides from the fully engaged position in the pump. Sometimes when its bolted down to the flex plate it will pull back out of the pump too far so I shim the torque converter-flex plate. If its too far into the pump, (under load) the flex plate can force it too far into the pump and cause premature pump failure. I usually like to see the torque converter 1/8" out from fully engaged.
That is very good information. I haven't taken a transmission out that had shims on the torque converter, so I have never put them back in either. No issues so far, but I will definitely keep that in mind on the next one!
@@dudewecanfixit It usually is a problem with rebuilt Torque Converts. When they weld them back together they are shorter and the TC doesn't fully engage the pump. They can also be welded together too long.
Its almost like you made this series of videos just in time for me to have bought this truck with a bad 3/4 band. its a 2010 but im sure its all pretty much the same, i just hope i get the right kit and dont get pneumonia dropping the thing out in the driveway here in michigan this time of year lol. thanks for vids to follow along with. makes me feel confident that i can handle the rebuild myself.
If you have some help, you should be able to remove the transmission in just a few hours. Then I hope you have a warm garage for the rebuild! Good luck, it's really not a difficult project, just take your time and enjoy the learning experience
Also, I got my kit from transmissionbench.com. You could also use rockauto.com or summitracing.com. If you have a local transmission parts supplier, that might even be better
I was thinking about grabbing one of these guys www.ebay.com/itm/4L60E-4L65E-4L70E-04-up-Master-Rebuild-Kit-Transmission-Overhaul-4L60-E-4L75E/202644117744 I do have a workshop with some propane heaters to rebuild the tranny in. Just gonna have to shovel snow when I go to take it in and out lol. I’m just making sure I get a kit that has the pistons in it, cause I figure if it’s not that check ball in the housing it’s gotta be the pistons that caused the 3/4 to go bad. Originally I hoped it was just a solenoid so I dropped the pan twice trying to fix it but now when I drive it I can tell it hits 3rd but there’s just a lot of rpm before you get any sort of pull feel out of the pedal then it just drops back into 2 when it gets around 4k
Sounds like you have it figured out. Sounds like the frictions and steels are toast. Definitely replace the pistons and verify the check ball doesn't leak. Also look into reaming out and replacing the AFL valve in the valve body. You should also replace the TCC valve, these wear out and 3-4 apply fluid pressure can be reduced increasing slippage and burnout of clutches. Sonnax and transgo make kits for these repairs.
Did you lube the snout of the torque converter before seating it into the crankshaft? I did not but I just saw a video where someone did. Do I need to take the tranny back off and do this?

Idk if my trans dip stick tube bent but I had the hardest time putting it in. Took 2 hours trying to bend and put it in place finally got it.
Pretty much just asking what would you use...I've seen Kooler Kleen ,wondering what's your thoughts
I just use compressed air and fresh transmission fluid
@@dudewecanfixit thx brother
Great video man. Your patience is shown in your mannerism and in your voice. It shows that youve been doing this for years..
Unfortunately, still over my head. I woulnt dare try this myself. If i had an extra car, i would , Unfortunately its my daily driver and cannot be without a car for to long.
Thank you so much for the comment! Videoing a repair takes 4x as long as just doing the repair
👍Thanks for This video it helped me tremendously doing my first transmission swap this weekend was able to knock it out in a day
Nice work!
Thank you did this whit my son finished it today test drove it ...works flawlessly. Thank you
That's awesome! Congratulations! I'm glad it worked out for you guys. Please subscribe to our channel and share it with some friends.

Make sure that the rubber grommet did not get pushed into the pan and that the dipstick tube is seated all the way
How many ft lbs. Did you torque bell housing bolts
Edit, edit, edit, favck. Too much edition, doing not editon fucbk again.
Thanks for this cause watching the removal video, all I could think was “I’ll never be able to remember how to put all that back together 😅” 😂
It's all about taking your time and knowing the procedure!
Thanks!
I can't think of anything I would do different for a standard rebuild. There are upgrades available.
Hey man I have a question. I’m putting the bolt back in the flex plate and torque converter and as I was threading in the first one I heard and felt the torque converter slide forward. Is that ok?
That should be fine as long as the transmission is fully seated against the engine
There is no relearn procedure.
Just install it and make sure the fluid level is correct
These videos give me all the confidence.. imma switch my tranny out with a decent used one then rebuild the one I take out just to gain the skills to do it.. and save me idk 2 grand..
Sounds like a great plan! You can do it
Hey question I just installed my 4l60e and when I start it up it sounds like loud clunking under the bell housing any idea what that noise is?
When the starter is engaged or while the truck is just running?
I'm not aware of any airbag wires or connections near the transmission
@@dudewecanfixit thank you!!👍🤗
Awesome series! Fully rebuilt my transmission with your videos!
That's awesome, good job!
Real quick tho, got everything together and back on the truck. I shifted thru the gears like you did, but I don't have Reverse.. before I take it off the truck again, would you have an idea of what could be the problem?
Is your fluid level 100% correct?
Reverse takes the most fluid pressure to operate.
Also, does the linkage feel normal shifting through all gears?
I've check the fluid multiple times. It's withing range.
And yes, feels like it should
That's interesting. I'm not sure what the next most prevalent item would be
Thanks for the video. Your install video looked as easy as the removal. I just wish i could het my truck up as high ad you did.
I have used blocks of wood before to increase height, but whatever you do, make sure it is very stable before you get underneath the vehicle!
I am guessing that the slip yoke is the same. Was the length equal too? Thanks
That is the same transmission and driveshaft from the original vehicle
Is the reason for the fluid over flow the fact that you didn't run the trans long enough to get the torque converter filled back up?
No, I put too much in. Start with 6 quarts
How do you prevent the flex plate from rotating while torquing them
You can put a socket on the crankshaft bolt and hold it from there.
I followed your series and my van is running great after reinstalling it a year ago!
Nice work!
Great videos!! Hey I like your hammer! I bet that hammer is older than you guys haha. It's like every toolbox has a old tool from dad, grandpa etc. Keep up the great work !
Thanks! I collect antique tools from garage sales sometimes!
You guys are awesome thank you! was able to do it myself watching this video saved me some money and shes running great
That's fantastic!
Did you check the gap between the torque converter and the flex plate? 1/8 gap..if not, I see a burned up pump. Trashed tranny..
I put the gap specs in the video description.
Thank you 👍 for your video I was able to fully rebuild my 4l60e off my 06 Silverado
Yes! Stoked to hear this. We try hard to make our content is everything you need go get the job done. Hope we won your subscription!
where is the exhaust pipes? I was wondering why you made it look so easy.
You can get the top center bolt from the engine bay. Behind the back along the firewall. Where a distributor would have been located. Soooo much easier.
T
The easiest way!
Great to know!
How did you guys check the converter flywheel clearance.?
I didn't measure it, but I did explain the visual ques in the video.
Is there a cover that goes over the inspection hole in the bellhousing where you where moving the torque converter with your finger? Or is the hole just open?
Thanks
There probably should be a cover lol
I been studying this video and the other one I'm about take one out of my 97 chevy pickup I just need a kick start and for it cool down a little lol thanks for the video I hope it it helps me
We hope it helps! It's helped a lot of others if it makes you feel any better. Thank you for watching and supporting!
It helped me out a lot thanks now have little shake going down road afterwards it's hard to tell just bad luck I guess
Major Question for my install: I broke my dipstick trying to remove it before. The old housing at the bottom will not come out! Is there any harm in removing the tranny pan to push the pieces out and then reassemble it? Is there a better way than that? I would very much appreciate any help any of you could give!!!
That sounds like a very reasonable plan to me. I don't see any issues with that
You make this look much easier than I thought it would be!
lol! i hear you man
Thank you! for this great 👍 video I was able to remove and overhaul my 4l60e.
That's great, good job!
I'm not sure, get under there and see if it's accessible.
At what point are you supposed to shift it into neutral to install the drive shaft?
You can shift it into neutral whenever you want, just make sure to put it back in park before you remove the wheel chocks
Good video but does anybody know where the ground wire goes bolted to, my mechanic went MIA in the middle of my transmission job and I’m trying to finish installing it myself?
Which ground wire?
@@dudewecanfixit it’s a steel braided looking ground wire hanging there and I’m thinking it probably goes ground to one of the transmission bolts but I real don’t?
How did you test the lockup on the torgue converter they say they will burnout quick if the lock up ain't working
Watch your RPMs and count your shift points. You should have four shift points.
1st to 2nd gear
2nd to 3rd gear
3rd to 4th gear
Torque converter lockup (about a 200 rpm drop) once you are cruising.
Hey dudes! Thank you for this awesome video! I followed along your removal video and it was awesome, this one is a life saver especially you saying what each bolt size is because I have a bucket of bolts and I don't remember where any of them go! 😂😂😂😂
Haha, it’s always a good idea to label things!
Should the torque converter have any play or wobble after fully seating in the transmission ?
Side play should be very minimal. In and out play will be present.
@@dudewecanfixit yeah...there is more in and out play than you would expect
So there isn't any way to get the dipstick in after you install the transmission, even if you lower the rear of the transmission?
Eh, I doubt it. It fits between the curvature of the transmission and the tunnel. Not much clearance
@@dudewecanfixit got it in for the bottom in about 5 min. After removing the dipstick form the true.
That's great! Good to know
I see your from the busted knuckle garage. Took me a while too to stop using my ratchet handle like that. Think it was slipping off a nut and punching a sharp edge crossmember that finally did it.
Yep, some habits die hard
How do I know if the transmission from my 1999 yukon will fit in my 2002 tahoe? They are both 4L60E transmissions and both are 2WD. I was told that not all 4L60E transmissions are the same. My yukon jas the 5.7L engine and my 2002 tahoe has the 5.3L engine. Thanks for any information.
As far as I know, they should be interchangable. The differences could simply be internal and not affect the compatibility. You could Google search "4l60 changes by year" and see if that yields better results
The main thing I would compare is the electrical and mechanical connectors on the driver's side of the transmission to be sure those are the same
@@dudewecanfixit Thanks
love your videos...quick question is a 4l60E transmission from 2000 to 2005 2WD compatible with green connector and torque converter, neutral safety switch....thanks in advance
I'm not sure
@7:56 my torque converter has a quarter in gap between the the flywheel, bolts don't start threading, is this normal, to have to pull TC to the flywheel?
How did it look when it came off? Is it the same torque converter? Did it have spacers?
Once you have the transmission installed onto the engine you must verify that the torque converter
remained fully seated into the front pump during the transmission installation. You should observe 1/8”
(.125”) to 3/16” (.187”) of air gap between the torque converter mounting pads and flexplate before
sliding the converter forward to attach it to the flexplate. If you have 1/8” - 3/16” air gap then you may
proceed with sliding the torque converter forward and attaching it to the flexplate. If you have less than
1/8” air gap then you may not have the torque converter fully seated into the front pump. This will
require disassembly and verification of proper torque converter installation. If you have more than 3/16”
air gap then you may install high quality flat washers between the mounting pads and flexplate to shim
the converter to the correct air gap dimension of 1/8” - 3/16”. NEVER shim the converter to eliminate all
air gap. Running the torque converter in a fully shimmed condition WILL result in damage to the front
pump gear set, front pump stator body, torque converter pump hub, and may even cause damage to the
internal torque converter components as well as the crankshaft thrust bearing.
@@dudewecanfixit I figured it out, I didn't have it lined up, just needed to turn the flywheel more to the correct hole. Lol
Awesome
hey guys, you have helped me do 2 transmissions swaps at home . i ran into a problem , the bottom 2 bell housing bolts have stripped threads. is there a way to fix ?
thanks in advance
If it's the bolts, just go get new bolts. If it's inside the engine, you might be able to bore it out and put in over size threads or a helicoil
@@dudewecanfixit sounds good thank you
Great video! What transmission jack is that?
It's a harbor freight transmission jack
Did you fill the torque converter with fluid first? Also how did you get those top bolts on the bell housing in?
I added a half quart before I installed the torque converter. Get the other bolts snug first and then let the jack down a little too get more access to the top bolts
I didn’t put the first flywheel/torque converter like you did and I only found 2 holes and now I don’t know what to do
Take it apart and rotate the flywheel to the next hole and try again. Do this until it all lines up
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏, this is a high quality step by step video.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
What’s the torque specs from bell housing to engine block on this 4l60e ??!!thank you
35 ft/lb
What is the process if your torque converter is bound up. My transmission isn’t wanting to sit flush against my engine and I think that’s the issue maybe
It sounds like your torque converter is not seated all the way. Move the transmission back and try to get the torque converter to seat further. Rotate and push until it clicks down further
Hey thankyou for this video it helped a ton! One question, one of my bolts on the bottom of the trans striped a little and won't go all the way in. Will it be fine to leave it like that? All of the other bolts are good.
Is that in the bell housing where it bolts to the block?
@dudewecanfixit yes the bottom of it
Personally, I think it would be fine. However, I cannot guarantee it
@dudewecanfixit ok I gotcha, just needed a second opinion lol, thankyou!
No problem
Yes, those should be interchangeable
I'm not sure what you mean by "setback"?
That's wild, you would think they would keep these within a certain tolerance
Upper bell housing bolt torque specs? He didn’t say.
All the bell housing bolts have the same torque spec. I said the torque spec when I started torquing them down in the video
No you made this 3 years ago but. Can i put the cooler lines on the tranny with the nut on the line? And not in the tranny and push the line in?
If the nut is already on the line, wouldn't you have to screw it into the transmission?
nice video.... I was wondering what brand is that blue impact you are using?
Kobalt from Lowes
Thank you for the video. What is the torque for the bell housing bolts?
35 FT/LB.
Sorry, we fast forwarded over the part where I talked about that.
@@dudewecanfixit Thank you very much

@@dudewecanfixit I’m looking for some but most of what I’m seeing is for 97-99 and 2000-03
Dude this was a great video as I’m about to tackle mine. Thanks so helpful!

Is this the same procedure for the 4l65e on Cadillac Escalade 2005 6.0 Awd?
I have never worked on one of those, so I cannot say for sure
I've got a question!!! I've got one dow pin in the transmission and one in the block that's the way it came out Is it supposed to be that way?
That's fine
They are there for alignment when you put the transmission back in. Doesn't matter what side they are on.
I would like to know what is the best convert tie for 4L60E for Chevy 1500/99 4.8 Lts?
Did you mean to type torque converter?
Did you lube the snout of the torque converter before seating it into the crankshaft? I did not but I just saw a video where someone did. Do I need to take the tranny back off and do this?
I usually put a little transmission fluid on it to help it slide in, but it's not necessary.
You don't need to take it back out.
