    Folks, this may have been the biggest removal I have ever done. This hive was MASSIVE! It took over 7 hours to remove this hive, and over 30,000 bees were vacuumed up. I was grateful for all the help I had on this one, Rocket Scientist Steve, and the homeowner, Bubba. So, check out this crime scene removal and let me know what you think. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    What a hive!!! First one must be a couple of years old. Then the second hive moves in, and the geometric precision of the comb moves forward... Thanks Jeff!!

      Could you tell my drop of enthusiasm when I discovered just how large this hive was and how much work it would take to dismantle it? I knew after seeing how big it was we were going to be there for a while.That hive was a real work of art, beautiful. It all worked out well, and the bees are doing great in their new digs at the abbey. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

      Crazy thing here, I have a massively irrational fear of wasp! I don't know why but if one is flying around me my fight or flight response kicks in and flight usually wins! 😂 I've seriously spent hours in my bedroom being held hostage by one little wasp flying around my living room while waiting for someone to come kill it. They've also held me hostage in my car! But I don't have that fear with bees or any other insect for that matter. My bff and neighbor have an agreement that I'll come take care of her spiders and water bugs and she will come take care of my wasp problem!

    Man that was a big one. I can't believe you didn't just pack up and leave when you saw how much work it was going to be. You know I'll come finish those for you. Also you must not watch those CSI shows. They use flashlights even in broad daylight. I didn't see a flashlight when you were on the roof.

      The only reason the homeowners did not call you on this one is because the bees were in the master bedroom closet. You two are so funny and I absolutely love you both. So - I may not believe him when he counts but I wont play favorites. My parents were masters of giving love to all their kids without playing favorites. I am therefore attempting something similar here and it is NOT easy! But it's fun to watch and love you both. But I think this swarm should count as two! It was the work of three anyway, but not the work of getting two swarms, chasing them down, etc... only had to travel to one. But it was the work of three! LOL So how you going to handle it? One swarm or two? Don't ask the Rooster, I am sure he would not agree!

    Hi Mr. Ed.
    Question: What do you do with all the bees after they complete their nest in the frames? Do they live there forever on your property, or do you put them back in the wild somewhere or what?
    Since this was 30,000 bees alone, and I've seen you get many more in other videos.
    Do you just house them temporarily or do they stay with you forever?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 лет назад

      All the hives belong to the monks at the abbey, I just tend them. After removing a hive from a structure, the comb and bees are relocated to the abbey where they will live....until some disaster befalls them. Hives are always dying, but generally they live for many years. I hope this answered your question. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

      Bubba did a great job prepping the site, it made the clean up so much faster. The different colors indicate different ages of the comb. New comb is light, old comb is dark. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. I have noticed that almost all of the natural hives you capture are between 10' and 16' (my best guess). All bee keeper hives are placed near ground level to make it easier to work the hives. My question is, "Wouldn't it make sense to build a platform and get the bees up at what seems more like a natural height for the bees?". You then could set empty hives in areas hoping to catch swarms. What are your thoughts here?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 лет назад

      Mr. Ed does NOT like heights. I think it has something to do with living in Louisiana my whole life where all the land is flat. I don't even like crossing high bridges. That being said, I will pass on the idea of elevated be hives. Besides, it does work very well keeping the hives a foot or so off the ground. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    nice hive wow. I need your advice. I did a removal a few days ago in a wall of a shop. a swarm had moved in about 3 weeks previous to me getting there. all new comb and plumbing full of nectar. Question is what is the best way to vacuum up the bees without sucking up the nectar.

    • @MsCherade9

      MsCherade9 I already have a bee vacuum just curious about the best method of vacuuming bees in the spring without sucking up a bunch of nectar

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 лет назад +1

      The trick is NOT to suck the honey or nectar, only bees. It becomes almost impossible not to do it when all the honey is dripping down on the comb. To keep that at a minimum, I try and remove as much brood comb as possible before I start to remove the honey comb. That way, at least the brood comb is not covered in honey and wet bees. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    Been watching your videos for a week and I have one question: what the heck do you do with all those bees? You must have like 150 hives at this point no? Or do you pass some over to other keepers? I guess there is limited amount of hive certain amout of people can keep up with right?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад

      We have about 120 hives between the abbey's property and the 7 out yard where our bees are housed, and I maintain them generally by myself. As I rarely disturb the bees, it is not a daunting task....except when I harvest honey which I plan on doing in a few more weeks. Many of the hives that I remove are given to the guys that help remove them, Wreck it Ralph, Bubba, who you will bee meeting soon, Richie, and other folks as well. By the way, this removal done with Rocket Scientist Steve, is one of the largest ones I've done to date. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    I am somewhat familiar with the area where the Abbey located. Kinda swampy / forested area? I guess I am curious where your ever growing bee population is getting their nectar. Have the bees spoken to you yet to suggest you plant some fruit trees and honeysuckles around the Abbey? A local bee farm here in Kentucky feeds his bees with Orange trees!! (believe it or not) and the honey from those hives has the most amazing citrus flavor I have ever tasted. I just hope all those girls have plenty to eat ya know......cuz like......I love those little things. ;)

    Do you charge the home owners? Or do you take the bees and honey as payment?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад +10

      I do not charge to remove the bees, and neither is the honey or the bees a payment for the removal. To house the bees in a bee box is a $ 100.00 expense to me, I spent over 7 1/2 hours in removing this hive because it was so large, and an hour and a half in travel time, another expense to me. Trust me, I would come out way cheaper to buy bees from a bee keeper than to do it this way. So, the bees and the honey would not cover my expenses. Then why do it? Because I want to save bees from being needlessly destroyed, and there are not to many folks in the world who are willing to do all the work necessary to accomplish that task. Thanks for watching, and I hope you continue to watch my bee wrangling adventures. God's peace.

      My background is in Natural medicine and nutrition and I've never seen it be the case that any species (plant, insect, bird, fish or animal) does better on a highly refined/processed diet of any sort compared to their raw, native food. The detrimental impact on the immune system in particular is well documented and quite marked (in humans at least) when they consume refined sugar on a routine basis. Also, in my experience and in all the studies I've read as well, there's just no comparison in the impact that optimal diet and nutrition has on a species' health and resilience. That said, I've only kept bees for a couple of years (pretty hands off approach) and they didn't make it through the winter a few years back after a neighbor's house was sprayed for carpenter ants. So we've been waiting until we bought a little property out in the country before "wrangling" a swarm or two to repopulate our hive out there and hopefully add a few more.
      Anyway, while I know it's standard practice to feed bees sugar water and has been for a very long time, I often wonder whether this could possibly be contributing to all the colony collapse issues we're having now. Obviously this is a multifactorial issue, but as I gear up to start keeping a few hives out on our little farm, I am looking for ways to provide the healthiest environment I can to support their success. One way I'll be trying is to use horizontal Langstroth top bar hives to minimize disruption to the colonies when I'm working with them (and to make it easier on my back!). Another idea we have is to harvest our honey in spring time once the nectar flow has started instead of in the fall, to allow the bees to consume their own food throughout the winters. Since we're only harvesting for our own use, this will work fine for us. However, we want to be ready to feed if there's ever a need and I was hoping to find a way to do so with the bee's own honey by keeping back a bit in storage for them. I suppose I could just keep some whole frames of honey in the freezer and rotate through them as I harvest new honey, but it would make it easier if I could just keep a few half gallon jars of honey aside as a back up. I suppose I could water honey back down to the consistency of sugar water as well and then just feed them with that like you did in that feeder. Hmmm, so much to consider...
      Anyway, sorry for such a long post. But with all your experience, I would truly appreciate your thoughts and input if you have a minute to respond. My "ideas" are based on my experience in natural health care, reading and idealism not years of bee keeping, so I would greatly appreciate your knowledge and first hand experience to give us your thoughts about it all.
