I love how this season celebrated Daniel being the hero who will fight for everyone and how it took time reminding us of that. Like the ex bullies bragging about his feats, all the way up to Daniel once again being the one to defeat the final boss. And tying in karate kid 3 for full circle in that final fight. Masterful !

I thought the finale was fantastic for so many reasons. For one, it was cool to see literally all 3 movie bullies teaming up to fight Silver's allies while on Danny' s side, and every fight was awesome. Chozen vs. Silver was particularly brutal which I didn't expect, and I was legitimately scared for Johnny until of course the baby picture came out and he just went beast mode, then got rescued by Barnes which was great. And It's nice Robby and Miguel and Tory and Sam have resolved their rivalries. Overall I was definitely hoping to see more of Kreese but I loved his storyline despite how short it was. I was kinda hoping he'd be around to see the downfall of Silver and maybe even fight/kill him though I doubt he'd actually kill him since this show has never crossed that line.

Nearly everything you said is true and mostly why i love this season as a whole, 1 thing I criticize though, is I felt like mike didn't have enough screen time, he was in 1 episode, then in episode 10 went off to fight silver and gets knocked out immediately, and only comes back at the last moment. besides that there is one scene after that, and it isn't even about him.

One thing that Cobra Kai does well is making us care about both the original cast from the movies and the new cast (the next generation). When continuations/reboots occur, you typically get new characters but very really care about them, but not Cobra Kai. Another thing is that despite the large cast of characters, Cobra Kai managed to find balance in giving everyone a decent amount of screentime to develop.
Characters like Hawk and Demetri take a backseat this season, but it's ultimately because their stories are practically completed in a way, Hawk and Demetri have conquered their demons, unless greater demons emerge in the future.
Sam and Tory have had some shakey moments on both sides from Season 2 - 4 in writing. However, Season 5 managed to bring the best aspects of both characters, I may not be a big fan of Samantha LaRusso, but it was satisfying to see the pay off for her character as well as Tory.
Miguel and Robby are my favorite characters, and seeing Johnny, Miguel, and Robby embrace each other over getting a new addition to the family almost brought a tear to my eye. It was especially satisfying seeing Robby control his emotions on the stairs this time. Keep in mind, this is after Robby joined Cobra Kai and had to unlearn the dark lessons of his Sensei's from his head, which makes his restraint even more satisfying. I could go on and on about every single character but this comment is already so long lol.

Is anyone else disappointed in how underused the character of Mike Barnes was? For me he was one of the best characters from the original trilogy. He's a great actor and very convincing martial artist who always looked like he could hold his own in a real fight. After the furniture store episode I was just waiting for him to show back up, then when he finally did, he gets sucker punched out cold.
Then when Johnny is getting his ass kicked, I was like any minute now the karate bad boy is going to clean house to save the day, only for Johnny to turn super saiyan and practically do it himself.
I just hope we see more of Barnes in the next season and actually see him show off his karate!

Yes i am disappointed too. But i had a gutfeeling it would be like that. I wrote it here on YT many times, some agreed, others not. The reason was Sean Kanans work on The Bolt And The Beautiful soap opera. Its a daily show and he must be on set almost all the time. So he simply didnt have much time to film Cobra Kai. I hope in S6 the writers from TBATB give him more free time. They could write it like his character takes a vacation or so.

His character Deacon Sharpe (funny name :D) could simply take a vacation for some weeks, which would give Sean more time for Cobra Kai. I am sure the writers from TBATB could arrange that. I mean i am not a writer, but i am positive i could find a way to let Sharpe dissapear for a time, a vacation or so is always possible since even in the real world people take vacations.

I'm now wondering if other writers ignore this show because it makes them look bad.
This show is everything they need to achieve (on one third the normal budget), but it's ingredients are things that many writers have ideological opposition to. POC characters defined by actions and not skin colour? Check. Badass karate fights that aren't CGI/totally one sided? Check.
But most importantly, this show loves its own lore, loves its own past, and loves its own fans. This is the direct opposite of the modern reboot playbook which openly despises its own property and fans.

It was a great season finale because it was a way for Daniel to put down his demons from the past when he took down Terry using the Quicksilver method while using Miyagi-Do technique. Chozen’s development and growth was amazing, Johnny’s fatherly instincts showed even more so, Miguel and Robbie were able to bury the hatchet after letting out their anger in that match; and San was able to finally see what Tory was going through after hearing the truth about the Referee bribery and Devon found a new female role model in Tory

It's funny. I felt Kreese did change. His feelings about Johnny were real. His therapist told him it's not to late to change. He did. He also knew he was set up. He wasn't going to accept prison. He escaped having fought his demons and was finally free. He is redeemed at the end. A terrific way to end season 5. Kreese is a better man. Kreese is a survivor! They have touched on that theme the whole series. I felt they underplayed him a bit, but it was subtle and actually works for his character. I am not truly convinced he is nearly the monster he was painted as (Silver is the ultimate psychopathic archetype). Kreese has done some morally reprehensible things, but it is not like he has become a "Colonel Kurtz" type. PTSD will wreck you! And if the writers have done anything truly excellent, it is showing how PTSD (joined with lack of forgiving the past) can stop you from growing as human. I think he changed in subtle ways, and let us not forget that he actually was incorrectly sent to prison, for Silver's crime.

This season was just beautiful! It's perfection! As a childhood fan of the original movie trilogy, there was something just beyond awesome about Daniel's same-age nemeses from each of the three movies teaming up to invade Silver's home to take him down, and facing the fight of their lives once they get there! I also absolutely love the reveal that Amanda is the cousin of Jessica from Karate Kid III, as well as the barfight with their old high school foes that Sam has to intervene in. The final series of battles left the school fight at the end of Season 2 (which was crazy epic) in the dust. The final fight between Daniel and Terry Silver was another thing of beauty, especially Daniel's using Terry's "Quicksilver Method" against him and the symbolism of Silver picking up a trophy to use as a weapon, only to lose the fight as he's just lost his reputation and the loyalty of his students. This is the one series that gives me any hope that there are still good writers in Hollywood, as all the other shows and movies I've watched in the past several years had terrible writing and hit-or-miss acting, though the effects and visuals have been better than ever. Hopefully, you're right and the studios will draw inspiration from Cobra Kai to start recapturing some of the magic that used to make films so epic.

My thoughts on season 5 is (to paraphrase a famous story) it was the best of seasons. It was the worst of seasons. While on the front lines it did deliver with action, drama, suspense, and even a few comical moments, it was too busy, there were way to many storylines to develop them all to come to fruition effectively. I said the same thing of season 3 but this time it kind of hit a new gear much like Johnny in his last fight. I was disappointed in how the Miquel and his dad panned out even though Johnny and Robby bonding on the trip was refreshing. Then Miguel comes back and him and Sam end up doing a whole Ross and Rachel “on a break” which kind of sucked. Sam’s growth through the season was nice though. Also I liked how Miguel and Robby made amends. While unorthodox in the real world their bonding fight was awesome and excellent in execution. My biggest disappointments of season were that the relationship of Devon and Tory was rushed and really did not fit together well. The new Sensei Kim was not developed well and comes off as 1 diminional and almost cartoonish as a villain. I feel the show could have utilized Mike Barnes better and not had him just as a side character in 2 or 2 and a half episodes. I hope they are setting him up for a more prominent role in season 6 and the valiant warrior speech from Silver to Chozen was a stroke of genius but Chozen deserved a better end of his fight with silver. I have binged all of the show many times since I discovered it at end of Season 2 on RUclips and for me something great about the show is how the actors especially the younger ones have grown and developed and created chemistry with one another. Another character that kind of fell flat with me was Kenny. I feel they could have done something a little more or different to make him better and not let him retreat back into being just a hot headed bully with a score to settle

Another great breakdown and analysis! I thought this was the best season so far and enjoyed every minute of it. I could sing the praises of the writers and actors all day, and, in fact, I wasn't aware that there would be another season, so I was viewing everything with the lens of closure and was very happy to see a beautiful ending for some many legacy characters, as well as for the new ones. One question that I have, related to continuity: Kreese was able to see through Chozen's story because he toasted with Karaii instead of Kampai, the former indicating that he was from Okinawa. But in Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi himself says Kampai when he's celebrating the "anniversary." I guess that could be explained by the fact that he spent some time in Japan during World War II, and perhaps acquired that custom, but I noticed that discrepancy immediately and wondered if anyone else did. By the way, when Robyn Lively showed up at the doorstep I didn't recognize her at first but looked up the IMDB page for that episode to verify that it was her. (We then later got some flashbacks and explanation that rendered that IMDB check unnecessary.) And, hey, we even got to see Elizabeth Anne-Rooney. You have to wonder if Jessica ended up marrying the headless rock climber or if he fathered her two kids. I love that this show went above and beyond in making the third movie, which was panned by critics and fans alike when it was released, not only relevant, but critical in resolving the conflicts and paying off the setups established by the other characters. It was all brought together beautifully. Can't wait for more of your breakdowns, Watch Party!

She was reduced to being Tory's flunky, bascially a younger version of her, even down to having a similar tragic home life.

The thing I like most is that it skips all the bullshit you would see in modern shows. No character gender identification story arc, no romance taking up all the screen time, no typical Netflix ideals being plugged needlessly into scenes, and yet they still keep representation in there but don’t make it the main focus of everything. Moon, Piper, they were introduced but they’re not at the forefront of everything. I love that Johnny is so anti-SJW (or sjw ignorant) but it’s funny, not offensive. It’s like the show is telling you we can all enjoy it and we can all live together without conflict. Cobra Kai really is the definition of great storytelling and how to continue an old series.

*The Good:* I liked expanding some of the lore with the new tournament and new villain. Johnny bringing the boys together because they are about to be a family was also nice. But most importantly, that skank Tory knows she's a fraud, and told the truth to Sam, our true champ, and Best Girl!
*The Great:* Terry Silver was brilliant. Really liked the psychological warfare with Daniel. Kept in character for both of them. Also really liked the addition of Chozen. He's been a missing piece, when it comes to the Eastern sensibilities of The Karate Kid.
*The Bad:* Miguel's trip to Mexico was underdeveloped. I'm with you. I'd trade the text message episode for one more entry with his father, and it should have been something to carry with Miguel's arc when he got back home and the season went on. I also think the Robbie/Kenny relationship needed a bit more to it.
*The Ugly:* Kreese's jello prison break was really, really stupid. I have nothing else to say.
*I Wish:* Mike Barnes was used more, because he was barely back! I also wish Daniel got a scene with Jessica. They had great chemistry in KK3, and that would have been a welcome reunion.

Agree. That’s actually one of my minor dislikes of the show the past 3 seasons. That show started out exploring all the gray. But then starting in season 3 seemed to lean more and more into Good guys vs bad guys. I suppose that’s the natural progression though.

Mexico storyline was really just for Johnny and Robby and it took Miguel away from Sam so that she could tell him she needs space herself when he comes back. That’s all. It really doesn’t add anything to Miguel’s story and was otherwise unnecessary to to bring in the dad who was a brief mention once in season 1. Oh , I guess it made for part of the great finale of season 4 also

I agree the Mexico arc was totally pointless. The only way it was not a total filler is if Miguel's father comes back at some point later. However if it ends there then it was a complete waste of time. But I dont think Kim Da-Eun was a waste. She was a GREAT addition to the story, excellent character and excellent portrayal by the actress. It was very enjoyable to see her on the screen. I am looking forward to seeing more of her in the next season.

3 drunken Senseis + Barnes on top was the best. For me Chozen is now the best Charakter very close to Johnny.
When der split Sam and Miguel again i flipped out. I hated the Writers, but it comes to an good End....for the Moment.
Carmen pregnant..hm.. too early? too forced? At the end of the Season i expectet every Time something really bad happens to her, or Johnny or Chozen. I thought they will injure one of them very bad, like Miguel in Season 2.

Let's face it, it was a stupid move on Daniel's part to cntact Silver's 'former' lawyer, since he's probably still on his payroll, even after 35 years, and this is proven to be true since Silver shows up at the sauna with what is presumably the lawyer's own phone!

I love Kenny interaction in Season 5 some people though he was a rush character and he had time to grow, thanks to Robby not being in Cobra Kai he was no longer a follower to anyone. Than there was trouble with Anthony so hopefully in this next season Robby could help them to become friends and for some very funny scenario they ask Robby for girl advice and he be in a awkward/interested stage as a mentor, heck I might be surprise Kenny and Anthony were talking about who Robby was mostly into Tory or Sam.

Kresse is a deadly man who's constantly at war. Silver is a sick and cleaver mastermind (nasty combination) who thinks it's all a game and he was thinking a lot more global than Kreese and he had some mercs as senseis.
As for Tory, it did not shock me she was still loyal to Kreese. He was the closest thing to a father she ever had who did a lot for her. Unlike most people, I never saw Tory as a bad person, just someone who was hardened by events in her life (her mother being gravely ill, her aunt trying to leach off them...etc.).
Kim Da-Eun is probably going to the next big threat IMO next season, assuming the actress returns. She might take over Cobra Kai dojo since Kreese is in no position to take it over due to his fugitive status and Silver will probably never be trust to teach at the YMCA let alone own and operate another dojo after what he did in the 1980s and now, so he won't be back running it. Kim Da-Eun is the only logical choice to inherit Cobra Kai.

    • @danielporter9685

I agree with most of this. Tory's interaction with Kreese seemed realistic to me. I'm surprised that she didn't go to Stingray directly. She could have told Robby what was going on too!
I'm not sure what happens to the Cobra Kai dojo. Does Kim have any actual ownership? And, do they have any students left? They will probably be forced to shut down during the investigation. Also, does Barnes have a legal stake in the Cobra Kai franchise? What if Kreese gets pardoned?

My only gripe with this season was Carmen’s pregnancy because it is making the show feel almost completely different; less like Cobra Kai and more like Fuller House 🤨. As Kreese put it, this is a karate dojo not a knitting class! This gives me cause for concern that the show’s legacy may be tarnished by a lackluster conclusion, similar to what befell Game of Thrones and other series.
It seems contradictory to the show’s overtones and principles to make it seem like the key to Johnny’s redemption and “making things right” is knocking up another girlfriend. There are a ton of other issues, such as Johnny’s drinking problem, finances, juggling reconciliation with Robby and Carmen’s desperation for a “second chance at love”.
I am not sure where the writers are going with this but despite my skepticism, I still have faith in them and intend to see how it all plays out.

I agree on one thing. That Miguel's trip to Mexico to find his biological dad was rushed, that last only 2 episodes and should've been 3 episodes. It was strange that Miguel never said that he is the son. However, there was a bond between the two seeming as closer to family and the father treated Miguel as extended family. I'm not sure if its being saved for season 6, but I doubt it.
The whole Sam and Miguel breakup was more in different light. I see it as mutual breakup. It's like they need to take a break, need some breathing room to focus on getting their own personal lives back on track. Miguel was more mature, he was more understanding instead being demanding and being desperate to hold on to the one he loves, he just let go, but deep down inside he was heartbroken with tears once he walked away and purposely dropped the pendant on the ground. When Robby was having a friendly conversation with Sam, Miguel did not get in the way or acted jealous, while Hawk told that "Robby is moving in on your girl."
The dojo fight scene was badass. That was shades of Bruce Lee's The Chinese Connection while there was dojo war between the Jingwoo school and Japanese Martial Arts school. That movie is a classic and I recommend people to watch that movie.

I really don't see how people don't see that this is the worst season finale out of all the seasons. If this was a series finale fine but what exactly am I supposed to look forward to in another season? Silver and Cobra kai are dismantled. Crease escapes from prison so who exactly are the villains now? It's not like he can just go back and reopen Cobra Kai now that he's a fugitive. If this was the route they were going they should have called it a series finale because there is absolutely nothing to draw me into another season.

Perhaps a little bird tells Miguel's father that he has a son. So the father Quest will be the father looking for the son. That would make a pretty cool Arc in the future.

@@watchparty1 I do like your analysis of the Miguel trip and I believe when you say it's too short yes that could be certainly a certainly one aspect. But I believe s fans what we'd probably did was read too much into the character and he was not really supposed to be more at more than a discovery point from Miguel.

@@watchparty1 During the Korean War, Sato met Kim Sun-Yung, who was well known for teaching many American soldiers. While he did not speak much about him, Sato held a lot of anger towards Master Kim.
By 1972, Sato started training many people on Okinawa as part of his own Dojo, which included his nephew, Chozen Toguchi. One day this according to karate kid wiki. So after he said Cheers in the fashion of an Okinawan not Japanese He was skeptical and probably consulted Kim or his other contacts. Remember silver does say that he has a lot of Japanese friends indirectly

I don't really see the writer, director's wanting to go on with Miguel's father's. Just like Johnny's father sid we can establish that he was a very mean and dirty person. I think at this point the character's self has shown that he doesn't have any feet have any feelings for Carmen or Yaya or even his present day wife or son. The purpose was to show what a vile individual he was and why Carmen had to leave. His sole purpose Miguel's father was money and he wants to keep his business running. We won't see any emotional attachments even if he discovers Miguel's true identity.
