I disagree Robbie told Eli to go easy on him that's why he didn't expect that punch but I do agree they did make Eli a little weak in season 5 but when Eli and Dimitri took down Kyler together put a smile on my face and remember Kyler sneak attack Eli from behind that's why he fell and dropped the tablet Kyler cannot defeat Eli one on one if he was coming at Eli face to face he wouldn't have been able to knock him down Kyler is a punk bully but the Kenny situation he was going easy on him that's what I'm going with Eli is not a scumbag anymore if he was he wouldn't care about anything or anyone he buried all that in the ground it was turning him to someone he's not it's a reason why he's not as aggressive he once were

Yah I don't see it that way, any time Kenny got the upperhand on either it was usually because one was holding back, or because one was caught off guard.
When Eli fought Kenny the first time, he treated him like a child, and did get hit, but the punch clearly didn't hurt him.
The second time he was not only holding back but was caught off guard by the ref cheating, then he was hit illegally in the knee, like Daniel was in KK1, then he continued to fight injured and got one shot by the silver bullet, which is also implied to be an illegal move.
When Kenny fought Robby, he got him with a sneak attack silver bullet.
And Miguel beat him so handily they barely showed it lol.
It is stated that Kenny and Deven both have the potential to rival or surpass them though, by senseis that know their shit. So to doubt that is a long shot.

Especially considering he got a great win last season, and his things before was being unable to accept a lose. Think of how he trashed Miyagi-Do after losing the mall fight, and while he made up with Miguel after the forest fight, he eventually ditched Johnny and displayed he had trouble getting along with Miguel when he could walk again, and broke Demetri's arm after the school stuff was getting out of control. And he went ALL out on his old bully while still in Cobra Kai.
It's just Hawk displaying he can take loses, best which was best.

I think the scene that had so much potential for Hawk’s storyline was when Hawk was about to get into a fight at the water park, but instead he saw the little kid who looked up to him. This would of been good to have Hawk struggle with being a role model, since he knows he’s not a squeaky clean hero, and end up becoming a mentor to some of the younger students at Eagle Fang.

A more rational scene would have been if Silver taught Kenny actually how to cheat, such as eye gauging, fish-hooking, striking in the privates, etc. A strike like that which took Hawk down would work much better because 1) It's Kenny's only way to even be competitive against Hawk, 2) It would make us dislike Kenny even more, and 3) The ref could simply give a warning rather than a disqualification. People are making a big deal about the rear leg strike as being disqualifying, but that's just the show producers trying to infuse stuff in the plot to make us think that Kenny is way overmatched and cheating in order to win. Hawk didn't really get nerfed so much as his whole purpose in existing as a character is to bump up characters to show their progression without having the main characters lose. That's what he was for season 1 Robbie in the all valley. In season 2 he was used to show that Sam and Robbie had progressed as a Duo and so they beat hawk at the mall. Then they had to show Miguel had grown at Coyote Creek not just by beating hawk at karate but by also doing the right thing and returning the medal of honor. Then he was used to show Dimitri's progression by losing to him in the school fight. The reason he won the all valley in season 4 is because Miguel was injured and conflicted and Robbie was conflicted with Kenny so neither were ready to beat him. Season 5 they needed someone to elevate Kenny. It's just to add drama without compromising Miguel and Robbie as the two obvious main characters of the show. Hawk will always exist as an elite threat for others to overcome.

Hawks character arc this season was representing Miyagi do in the competition. Robbie and Miguel both agreeing for Hawk to represent Miyagi Do shows Hawks maturity and that he has fully gained the respect and trust from his friends/teammates/sensei's again. From destroying their Dojo to fully representing them as their champion is a complete 360. Hawk isn't as much as a hot head now, But is becoming a natural leader and learning to de escalate situations he once would have lashed out in. He is showing maturity and loyalty. Him losing to Kenny should go to show that Kenny comes from good genetics/ high intelligence and a work ethic/ desire to learn and to get better. Hawk entered that fight in an arrogant manner and didn't take him seriously. Hawk didn't respect Kenny until he was already hurt/vulnerable. Hawk is the better fighter, but came in arrogant and got caught with a shot. It happens alot in combat. if they fight 100 times hawk wins 99 of them. Hawk needed that loss to humble him and to realize that hes facing a formidable opponent and not just a little kid pushover Kenny. Hawks becoming a leader and that takes calming down and calculating, Not constantly changing character and evolving. the time of growing is coming to an end for Hawks character. He is fully developed. And has become a great character everyone can understand and respect. Just Hawk being selected to represent Miyagi Do is all of the character growth needed from him this season. He is now a captain of Miyagi do, that is not a small change. Less is more sometimes. Too much character transformation becomes 2 faced clown behavior.

And Kenny was holding his own with Robbie during the brawl. If anything Kenny was overpowered. That's a fair criticism.

I think a big part of it was this being the adult characters’ season. This was about Daniel’s rivalry with Silver, and Johnny moving forward with Carmen and his new family. A part of that is Miguel and Robby uniting, which further sets up Johnny’s family. I think that was a pretty good aspect of the season. So much has been about the younger cast, which is great to set up new stories, but this is a legacy show so we do want to see more of the legacy characters. As long as they’re setting up a final arc of the Sekai Takai with a balance of the adult cast and younger cast stories then I think it will be fine. And Hawk will be a part of that, whatever plans they have for him.

Miguel didn’t hold back and Kenny wasn’t posing a threat to him whatsoever. 2.) The ref was scoring illegal points. 3.) The Silver Bullet move. 4.) Anytime Kenny won, it was due to surprise or illegal moves. 5.) And this is probably the one that most people don’t really think of, Kenny’s been at this for like 3 or 4 months max. This whole show takes place over the course of 1.5-2 years. If Miguel was good enough to win a Karate tournament after a few months, I think Kenny being as good as he is in season 5 isn’t too much of a stretch.

While I don’t think it was completely realistic that Kenny won, they didn’t nerf Eli. He’s held highly as equal to Miguel and Robby and he was playing with Kenny early on in the season. The writers did a lot to give reasons for his loss:
    A) Him underestimating Kenny and being cocky when he saw he was his opponent B) Robby reminding him to have compassion and him going easy on him C) the Ref being bribed (which is how Kenny wasn’t disqualified and Eli didn’t get points) D) Kenny fighting dirty hurting his leg and using a single knuckle punch to the Solar Plexus.
Otherwise, Kenny’s still clearly below Robby and Miguel. Eli and Robby going easy on him and getting hit by dirty tactics are the only reason he can compete.

@WASD TUBE Thanks man. People are really overreacting and missing the point. I do hope Eli humbles him next season.
Specifically, I have a good idea in mind. The Silver Bullet is really just a punch to the solar plexus, but with a finger knuckle extended. It’s an old Okinawan Karate technique. Chozen can point it out and Eli can learn to counter it. Or Kenny just misses and hits Eli too high or low in the chest/ribs or abs instead, injuring his finger. Really dangerous move on both ends really.

Hawk's "That's life, you win some, you lose some but you gotta move on" could have been a big character moment for him but it's mitigated by the fact that hawk's a flat character this season. Hawk's story did feel like it shoukd be done but if he was really this "cocky" after winning the tournament, he should have gone through an arc where he learnt and accepted that quote he used. Robby's arc of fixing his bonds with everyone felt silent as hell, as he didn't exactly "change" through it, and felt like the exact same Robby from the end of season 4, minus befriending Miguel, Hawk and Sam again. Overall, most of these arcs feel like arcs you have to make up in your head in order to be great and i might get hate for this, but Stingray was the only real character that felt like he had a change with him suddenly saving Daniel and breaking his alliance with Silver

Their was a missed opportunity with Hawk in season 5. Hawk's character was mute, meaning toned down so much so that it defied logic as to who both Eli and Hawk are. His actions written in season 5 contradict all of his previous motivation and agendas. Hawk's story arc could've been way more interesting if they would've included the build up of him actually getting back with moon. Like for example looking pass Moon kissing hawk in season 4 she could've made him have to work at getting her back a little. It would've made the fans appreciate when the payoff of them actually being together again came instead of automatically writing them in as a couple in season 6. Moon could've gave him the Sam Larusso treatment in telling him that she liked him but she sees how karate is effecting the Valley and the monster that cobra Kai created in Eli and for that she just wants to take things slow. This would make him an Underdog again having fanboys and audiences watching Eli ironically enough like a hawk, with hopes waiting to see wether Moon would take him back or not. Also Eli could've made it clear that he was still done with karate as his mother and he himself notices the change that it has had on him, he could explain that he thought karate was helping him but it's actually hurting him and he felt so bad for betraying Demetri, as well as breaking his arm that he only returned to help Miyagi do win that last All valley tournament because of Demetri. This would make him even more fascinating of a character. Eli was a nerd and deep down under the outside of Hawk, lies a nerd in Eli whom watches Doctor who and geeks out over it. This could be used to further build on Hawk's character, whom is still a nerd at heart and is interested in focusing on his grades, scoring high on his SAT's and getting excepted into College. This makes sense from a logical perspective in regards to the character of Eli.

Hawk got trained by multiple and different sensei,he has both skill, physical and experience advantage, not to mention he's an amazingly written character, one of the best and most complex ones,Kenny(who they uselessly tried to valorise in season 5)was introduced only in season 4,in which he didn't even got much screen time,he has no background,no charisma,no psychological depth, and his change was too quick, wasn't well showed, told and developed,he got less than half of the experience that Hawk,Miguel and Robbie got,but still,he destroyed Hawk(like, dude for real?what the fuck??),it's just insane, yeah the referee was corrupt, yeah he fought dirty, but still,Hawk should've won the same way Sam did, easily, but the writers just magically made up the whole Silver bullet thing for the occasion, and made Eli really struggle against Kenny and even lost so badly, that's just bad writing,it still is the only complain I have but it's the worst thing possible as well, dogshit.

My interpretation was that it was SO much like every tired teen drama we have seen that it was intentional, to spoof it. That is how I saw it, and I thought it worked when u look at it that way. I mean the whole rest of the season these kids had shown so much maturity that it was more like a S1 or 2 thing to have that in there. So I think it was more for humor than serious.

I wouldn't necessarily call Hawk nerfed, he's still on par with Robby and Miguel, the best of the boys. I will say I think Miyagi-do has made him more humble, controlled and reserved in a fight. We all know he would have snapped Kenny in two if he went all out right off the bat, just look what Robby did to him in the All Valley, then remember Hawk beat Robby fair and square. But learning Miyagi-do made him less impulsive, something Kenny was able to exploit, on top of the crooked ref.

Cobra Kai S5 lacked a fighter to rival the good guys, Miguel and Robby. This season had guys like Miguel and Hawk sitting in the background with no story going forward.
I get that the writers wanted to give Robby somebody to mentor, but Kenny effectively took over Hawk’s spot as the kid that was bullied into the one that does bullying.

After that I toyed with him and beat him fast and hard 1,2,3. I can appreciate Robby didn’t want kenny to get hurt. But he had no reason to think Hawk at this point in the series would be looking hurt him. They are trying to beat out Cobra Kai for a spot in this big tournament. The line was dumb , cheap and a cop out just so we as the audience would buy Hawk losing.

I hated Hawk not just losing to kenny but the way he did. As you said they tried to set it up earlier in the season and even during the match. It just made no sense and I found unbelievable. To me this was worse than him getting kicked by Dimitri in the school. At least with that you could say Hawk was tired and caught off guard because hey Dimitri himself was caught off guard based on how things had been going for him that season with training. I can accept Kenny training a lot and hard but he’s not on Hawks level. They weren’t gonna have Robby or Miguel lose to him. But they needed a guy to lose because they were gonna have Sam win. This whole thing just felt like the writers were like hey let’s have a do over of the tournament because of all the controversy of A bribed ref. They were like let’s flip it around like some kind of alternate timeline. Also, the big problem for cobra Kai they have no big bad young guy. Kenny is new and up and coming. Kyler is a joke.
All the trash talk to hall made no sense in any of the episodes. Tory and Kyler have seen what Hawk can do. They’ve seen him destroy Brucks. They saw or know he broke Dimitri’s Arm. The lack of respect found unbelievable. The writers tried to balance things with lines like you win some you lose some. Move on. Which is true. It just felt like a cop out because they know it wasn’t gonna go over well.
Also unbelievable Kenny is okay with cheating on behalf of Tory but sees the video of Silver about bribing the ref and is the first one to throw his shirt on Silver. Same with kyler. Again it sort of works because we’ve had Robby saying things to Kenny. And kyler had just gotten words from Hawk and then Kicked by Dimitri. It still didn’t feel right or make sense. As you’ve said it’s what the show needed to happen especially so the shirts could be thrown on Silver as a call back to the movie.

Edit: people are afraid of calling things as they are which is weird as this is abundant in modern shows. There’s also no problem when it’s done correctly, but the execution is what’s lacking here with Kenny. Cobra Kai had one prominent black character in Aisha and she’s effectively gone, the show runners and Netflix clearly pigeon holed Kenny in for that reason and that reason is why he’s suddenly super karate master. It’s bad writing, don’t be afraid of calling it what it is.
