This is so comprehensive. Being South African everyone just assumes I'd pick it up or understand our national sport. Problem is, no one every bothered explaining wtf was going on and what each position involved. Great video, wish I'd had something like this growing up.
Same here, been too embarrassed to ask coz everyone expects you to understand each infringement. My school didn't have much sports and my town didn't have a team so it's not something I grew up around
I'm on a girl's rugby team in America and I'll be honest this wonderful sport has changed my life and I know its not as popular here which sucks. I love being a prop it has made me more confident and sure of myself
It's pretty big in Australia, but not as big as Aussie Football. Definitely a lot more fun though. I love playing rugby, i play on South Australia's first LGBTQIA+ Team, so good
My 16 year old daughter has just started training for her school team. She's still confused on how to play and what the fundamentals are. I will show her this video and I'm sure she'll be on her way. Very well done, James!
In college, 45 years ago, I played Semi-Pro soccer $75 for a win, $35 for a loss). One day, getting ready for a game I watched the end of a rugby game. Watching that game, I was convinced that I was playing the wrong game! I've been a fan ever since but never had the fortune to get to play a game. I enjoyed the '95 Spring Bucks and loved invictus!
Thank you for the explanations!!!! I'm going to see my grandson play on Saturday, and know nothing about Rugby. He plays Scrum half. I will rewatch your tutorial again to learn more of his position.
I’ve only watched one Rugby match, so needless to say, I’m a newbie! This video was a great start to learning the terminology, the positions, the field and the plays. I will watch this numerous times until I understand and be able to recognize and associate the plays during a match. Many thanks!
I’ve been a fan of rugby since I saw the World Cup on TV in 2007. I wasn’t familiar with the laws and the flow of the game at first. As an American who didn’t grow up with rugby but is a fan, I’ve read many websites, and watched many videos and matches. This is one of the most thorough and clearly demonstrated videos on rugby that I’ve seen. I highly recommend it.
Thank you so much for this!! I'm a sophomore (girl) from the United States and my friend who's a senior introduced me to rugby just a month ago and I love it so much. They made me scrumhalf for the season and I'm nervous because I barely know anything lol but it's really amazing.
Thank you so much for this! I only started playing rugby for the first time in my life a few weeks ago and I’ve been so embarrassed because of how confused I am. This video has really helped me, I will be coming back to it! 👌🏻
Rugby gives me hope to participate in sport, during my primary years, football was the only sport that we played the most in my hometown and I suck at it, then I move to another country during high school, I was being introduced Rugby, then I immediately fell in love with it.
This is a full and well articulated primer on rugby. Thank you for the details and the logical breakdown of the core aspects. I appreciate how you did not compare the Rugby game to American Football. The demonstrating teams showed the game activity in good time, making the understand more full.
Just started playing rugby! Have only gone to two practices but I’m hooked! I’ve always thought the sport was cool and am now having so much fun and this video helped me understand the game.
I'm starting 3rds after Christmas at the age of 48 😂😂, never played before because I grew up in the wrong part of Dublin but I've always loved rugby. This should give me a leg up 😂😂
I'm from India and had no idea of the rules of rugby but being a sports enthusiast, wanted to understand the game. This is the best video I came across. Thanks alot man!
Thanks for this. As a parent with practically zero sporting experience & children who just joined a rugby club, this simple yet quit complete overview is a great help. I particularly appreciate the fact that you get straight to the information, unlike so many other YouTub channels that just waffle on for ages before giving you the info you are seeking. A bug thumbs up for that. Cheers.
I'm an American and I love watching the game. I first got introduced to it in the mid 1970's but never knew the rules. Your explanation really helps and I can now enjoy it more. I record the games on the Canadian channels and play it in slow motion so I can really see and understand the moves. It's far better than watching American football 😛
I’ve been playing rugby for 4 years and I’m 12, personally I think I’m really good at it, it’s my favourite sport by far and I’m witshijg to play for saracens when I’m older I’ve already got an Essex trial soon
I wish this was more popular in America. I never heard of it until I started playing this year in college and I can honestly say it's more fun than American football.
I was playing Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020, was starting to get into Rugby, went here to try to understand it, now afterward James, I am now a fan of Rugby and now a subscriber of you James, your awesome.
I played Rugby League (a similar but ultimately different game) in my youth but I would love to learn to be able to play Rugby. Rugby League is more fun to watch (IMHO) but Rugby seems more fun to play and has less potential for serious head injury. These are the two main attributes that attract me to it. The trouble is learning the game of Rugby. It's a lot harder to learn the game of Rugby than it is to learn the game of Rugby League. I wish they had Rugby in my area when I was growing up so I could've learned how to play it in my youth.

Thank you for such a clear explanation of the game! As a Yank, I've always been intrigued by the sport, even though I've never really understood it! Now that I have a basic understanding, I think I can now watch a game being played on ESPN. I will keep watching other tutorials to further my understanding!
I played my first rugby game for my school last year, been hooked ever since! I’m currently a wing/ centre, trying to transition into a backrower though lol
Great break down of the game in simple terms. I'm going to ask the lads in the U13's team I help out with to watch this as we have had lots of new players this season who have never played before. Thanks.
Don't feel stupid! It actually takes a couple of years to REALLY learn the rules especially for chaotic situations after tackles and in scrums & mauls. Exceptionally clear summary of the essentials. I started playing in college in America in 1970. Then it was a club sport only. More fun to play or watch than American football. Due to start training for union on tuesday and I'm more than excited to say the least! After this, I feel like I understand it better. Coming from watching league, it isn't that much different apart from the lineouts, scrums and mauls. Looking forward to starting now :)
Great video Hask, might want to consider adding "Union" in the title for any Americans though. With the Rugby League WC being hosted there in the near future that may come up a bit more
Going to my first game tomorrow, in Toronto, ON...Toronto Wolfpack. Thanks so much for this video! Very informative, so I won't be so lost watching the game!
Kelly McKeown I’m a massive Wolfpack supporter. They are my favorite Super League team. As you probably figured out this is a different game. I love both. Have you watched Toronto Arrows? In the US and Canada we can love both codes.
Thanks for the explanation, I'm a light heavyweight kickboxer myself but I really want to try a team sport and thought this was a good one to try since I'm too big for football. Gave me a good idea of how the sport works

very in detail, thanks very much for the explanation!! also Just started rugby, and transitioning from american football... I always have to rmb to run behind the ball carrier instead of running in front of him....
Best summary I've seen and am sending it out to frie ds who are curious. Only two important things missing, I believe: 1. Kicking out to touch from a penalty 2. Illegal tackling (high, spear, etc.)
Raúl Escalante illegal tackles are part of “Foul Play” under the laws: he covers this. He does get the free kick wrong, though - you can kick for touch and will have the lineout, but he only spoke about kicking infield or what happens if you kick it off the end of the pitch. He also missed the 22 dropout, calling a mark from a received kick, a defender grounding the ball in their own in-goal area and a few other things (penalty tries, 5-yard scrums and a few other minor points).
@@cybertrophic Thanks, Chance, good point. Although growing very quickly in Mx, rugby is still largely misunderstood and maligned as barbaric. I feel that explaining all the measures taken in revising the laws to make play safer in a casual manner would help to change this. Another way in which I think it would improve the TV spectator experience, which I believe is largely the purpose for videos like this, is explaining bookings and sending-offs for dangerous tackles which had such dramatic impact in both this World Cup and the last. All that said, I think it's a wonderful video!
Raúl Escalante in fairness, this is a relatively old video, so the RWC isn’t really a factor. There is a reason Rugby has Laws and not Rules - it originated in public schools (which are, oddly, the elite schools traditionally attended by the sons of aristocracy and the wealthy upper classes), so there is an idea of “being a gentleman” and doing the right thing that is assumed to underpin all things in rugby. It was famously described as a sport for barbarians played by gentlemen, which is about right - the idea was to get all the energy and aggression out of students who were at boarding school, to ensure they didn’t have any left to start fights or get into trouble... 😂
So helpful! Especially with the WC in session. One critique - it's very difficult to read the printed slides while you are talking - maybe bring the bullet points in one-at-a-time at the bottom of the screen while the subject is being explained. But again, great tutorial!
As a teenage hooker (got to trials for Ulster development squad), I still have to show this to friends! Although rugby is a big sport here, not many people seem to understand it, and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, thanks for the video!
This is so helpful I’m looking on starting but I have no clue what to do and I’ll be starting with good players straight away so this was helpful for rules and positions
Cheers from France Mr. Haskell, thank you for the great work! Helped some of my friends to have a clearer understanding about this incredible game we play!
Really well explained and to the point. Rugby seems to have a lot in common with American football which is also a very stop/start game. I prefer real football though. Because you can't see the ball in rugby half the time. Once they all get in a scrum or fall over each other on the ground you can't see who is fouling who and where the ball is and it makes it hard to follow.
I'm 51 years old. I just discovered this amazing game a few months ago. I'm excited about Major League rugby in America. Tomorrow is our championship. It is the greatest sport I've ever seen.
Liked it but if a tackle is performed and the oposite team delays to form a ruck am i allowed to pick out the ball from the person who has been tackled
This is so comprehensive. Being South African everyone just assumes I'd pick it up or understand our national sport. Problem is, no one every bothered explaining wtf was going on and what each position involved. Great video, wish I'd had something like this growing up.

Been in your shoes, brother. It’s kinda a shock for a football player. It took me a year and 1/2 to fully get the transition down.

I’ve got my first practice this weekend, thanks so much for the information!
As a teenage hooker (got to trials for Ulster development squad), I still have to show this to friends! Although rugby is a big sport here, not many people seem to understand it, and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, thanks for the video!
Oh Pepsi The first 4 words
Oh Pepsi yea you might not wanna say your a hooker outside of this sport
This is so helpful I’m looking on starting but I have no clue what to do and I’ll be starting with good players straight away so this was helpful for rules and positions
Cheers from France Mr. Haskell, thank you for the great work! Helped some of my friends to have a clearer understanding about this incredible game we play!
just started rugby thank you it explained a lot for me!
Very informative, so I won't be so lost watching the game!
Haskell. Sky is the limit for Rugby in the USA. We’re getting a new team in LA. The beaches are nice here mate. Come on over.
Well explained and articulated. Rugby is a noble game.
Great video! Perfect for sharing with a lot of my fellow Americans who have never seen the sport.
Thanks fam, real helpful stuff ya got here. Keep up the good work!
I have the same issue with Hockey as a spectator sport. There's no way to actually see the puck.
I'm 51 years old. I just discovered this amazing game a few months ago. I'm excited about Major League rugby in America. Tomorrow is our championship. It is the greatest sport I've ever seen.
How did it go ?, I’m from England and I’m 14 and have played the sport for 9 years, what position do u okay and did u win ?
A Marvellous indroduction to the game.
I really like this video. I'll probably watch it again sometime to put new training experiences into place
Great, now I understand this much better. Terrific video.
Liked it but if a tackle is performed and the oposite team delays to form a ruck am i allowed to pick out the ball from the person who has been tackled
Thanks I've started not too long ago this helps a lot while doing training
We actually have a try out and I was intrigued by the sport but I don’t know much about it.. thank you!!
I didn't like sports until I found rugby 🏉 yesterday for a school project but dang it looks fun
