      Ask your trainer to teach you to tackle very low. There is no impact if you tackle below the knee level as soon as you put your head in the good side (tackle with shoulder closest to the ball carrier.) with this low tackles, no matter te size of your opponent, if he is running he will fall

    one tip from a small guy: if u have problems getting people to fall and u feel they just drag you along. Grab the ankle and spin your entire body with it. You see it in top leagues all the time. Once the ankle is at a disadvantageous angle, which happens really fast (just imagine it in your head) people have to lay down. Otherwise the ankle will hurt or even break quite quickly.

    This is great. If you say you struggle with tackle confidence most interpret that as fear of the collision. But my issue is not the collision, it’s reading and responding to the movements of a player in space, some great tips here.

      did you try this out? did it help?

    • @jymbeau3633
      @jymbeau3633 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah good. Choppy feet (rather than big strides) keeps you going forward but able to respond to movement, and watching the hips is good too.
      I’d add an element of ‘acceptance’- it’s much better to make a good tackle on one player than trying to cover both the carrier and the man on the overlap too. It’s percentages. If I’m indecisive then they definitely score, but if I definitely tackle the carrier they probably still score but it forces them to make one more pass-catch and therefore an opportunity to drop the ball.

      Coaches say there are time limits to full contact and also moaning that I'm getting them together to practice..
      I see the opposition that they face sometimes are well trained with tackling and rucking.

    @pottieryann1228 7 месяцев назад

    Thank you, excellent video. The first step to have a good (and safer) tackle is the trajectory we take to get to the ball carrier. It sould allow us to don't let the choice of the direction to the ball carrier then we can have speed in the zone of contact. If we let the choice to the ball carrier ,he will slow us down and have an advantage.
    And the way I use to build confidence is to teach my players first to do very low chop tackle (really safe and effective tackles) and after teach them the offensive tacles you show.
    The difference between this both technics are little.
    Every training 20 min of tackling.

    • @TheRugbyTrainerTV
      @TheRugbyTrainerTV  7 месяцев назад

      hi mate, thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video. yes love the chop low tackle. how would you coach the chop low tackle?

    • @pottieryann1228
      @pottieryann1228 7 месяцев назад

      @@TheRugbyTrainerTV Thank you for the quality technicals video you publish.
      First I put the defender in safe and easy conditions to learn and repeat the technique (like we do in combat sport): a ball carier start 2m in front of the defender and will run toward one of the two plots placed on both side of the defender with no change of direction nor speed.
      First little instructions for the defender: small steps, lower the stands and hit with the shoulder closest to the ball carier. (To protect his head getting hit by a knee). That's the decision I want him to train, which shoulder to use.
      After few reps I add closing the arms around the legs of the ball carrier.
      Then I add all the instructions one by one: small steps, focus to hit with the shoulder closest to the ball carier, hip and shoulder oriented toward the ball carrier, squat with the back straight and extend (almost parralelle to the floor) to hit between the ancke and the knee of the ball carrier, with the same arm he hit the shoulder: reaching and catching the other leg or closing both arms around both leg (different techniques), quickly standing up, and at the end getting in position to take the ball of the down opponent.
      I use that in all training for all players as an extented warm up of the upper body.
      Then I add progressive difficulty doing it in a square with speed and feints. Here one more very important goal: the trajectory toward the ball carier in order to don't let him the choice of where to go.

    This will be a bit awkward for me to post and for you to read ... BUT your technique is very wrong for a number of reasons which I'll try to explain below. But first let me give you my coaching career record over 14 years covering 262 games with teams varying from juniors up to senior and everything in between. My win rate is 84%, but more importantly my FOR and AGAINST averaged over all 262 games is >27pts FOR and < 7 points AGAINST. If you absorb those figures you will see that defense played an huge part in my coaching success. If you're still with me, I would like to list my priorities in coaching the tackle and defense ..
    1) YOU (the tackler) MUST BE PROACTIVE , that is the tackler MUST dictate where and when the tackle is executed, ie force the ball runner to react to you and not the other way round, if you need more clarification on this or any of the other comments I'll be happy to share with you. I'm now 78 and way beyond coaching.
    2) You are correct in emphasizing that the tackler must move forward into the tackle but you neglected to say to put yourself about one meter on the INSIDE of the ball runner. this ensures that the ball runner only has two running options by cutting out his inside step and ensuring that the ball is moved away from his inside support.
    3) In my opinion you MUST emphasise that the tackler keeps his head behind the ball runner at contact early in the lesson. You do mention it later in your demonstration but if you do it early you put safety first.
    4) you put a lot of emphasis on "hitting" or making the "hit" .! Again I believe that you use way too much energy in trying to achieve this and you are putting the tackler (and the tacklee) IN DANGER OF INJURY. sO WHAT i SETTLED ON WAS TO GET UP CLOSE ON THE INSIDE (INVITE THE BALL RUNNER TO GO YOUR CHOSEN PATH) make the tackle (ENVELOPE) THE RUNNER AND WITH A SLIGHT TWISTING fall let him crash to the ground with you on top so as to be first on your feet to play the ball. Believe me, this is a very safe (and often spectacular) way to execute the tackle.
    I'll leave it at that for now, I'm trying desperately NOT to criticize but to help you in the future. God knows rugby union needs more and better coaches. I dispare at the modern game which I call LEAGUEBY ie rugby league with scrums and lineouts and pretty shit ones at that.
    please don't take offence ... I really mean well.
    Conor McHenry, Brisbane.

      Tackle low, the lower the less impact on a running ball carrier. Just keep your head safe by tackling with the shoulder closest to the ball carrier
