I bought the F89B and D right before they were getting rid of the D. The F89B is very powerful in ground RB as a CAS interceptor. The D model is just a meme machine. Very happy they went with the WIS ANG stock skin on the B model though.
I remember when this thing FIRST came out; it was so broken it could climb and GAIN SPEED rapidly at a 25* up-angle. The gun radar was also far far too accurate. I loved it.
I've been waiting for this. All I have to say is: with the F-89B I have 530ish kills, and 79 deaths. I FREQUENTLY get 6-7 kills, and have won my first 1v7, and 1v8 in this plane, as well as got my first 10 kill game. It's insane if played right.
I love this aircraft. And even more Variants of the F-89 are in the files. Like a 30mm Version and a Version with mixed armaments. I guess we will never see these
They’d be kinda useless in the current meta, but I’d love to see some of the US bombers from the early Cold War Like the B-36, B-47, & B-58 *edit: put the B-57 by mistake lol.
Always glanced at this jet in the US Tech tree and wondered if afterburners and 20mms on the nose at 7.0 is just OP or way to good to be true and there was some big caveat behind it.
On the note of ground-pounding, the Ground Target belts give you enough firepower to destroy anything up to the air battle "medium tank" with very short bursts. With the large SL multiplier on it, makes it a great SL printer with ground pounding. Especially when you run an antimech wager on the outside of the battle.
I've brought the F-89B into BR10 battles and it does great, the pen is amazing and you can side pen most tanks, and really mess up light vehicles. I just do low level passes to stay under radars. And of course this applies to any BR below that too.
Hey, love to see a review of this thing in the current meta however i have to completely disagree with the ground pounding potential taking on the armored targets belt (which thanks to the fire power still does amazing damage to air) you can destroy more then 20 (!) Ground targets with one tank of gas, including light bunkers and tanks thanks to the huge amount of ammo at the same time, your top speed of 920 kph means you can run and climb away from anything wanting to intercept you except in a full uptier as such, it's a very save way to use sl boosters, especially when paired with the antimech order for 3x more base sl for vehicle kills 2-3 F89B can also force a win this way basically every time, however it is not the most interesting Gameplay this was still a great review as always, it just feels like you undersold the groundpounding by a fair bit
Pay no attention to the avoid strafing here this thing can and will take out light pill boxes and medium tanks in air rb and don’t shy away from strafing anything in ground these guns hit hard
I know that being an afterburning jet it could be hard to balance but I feel like if this wasn't a premium it would've gone up to 7.7 or even 8.0 a long time ago... Despite its flaws it's still way too good to face anything below 6.7
@@hurricaneace143 Someone geolocated a picture I posted in the community tab earlier this week to Cambridge Massachusetts, so its not a big secret to say that I'm within daytrip driving distance of Boston. I don't like to get too specific, as a lot of my personal info (home address, phone, etc) is still published on some government websites from my time in the legislature.
Great vid. Love ising this plane in ground RB. Shreds light tanks and sets any other tanks engines on fire. So is the radar actually useless? If not how do you set it up? Im new to radars.
Why do you have AQ mode on all the time? The radar doesn't give any gun lead or any information the marker doesn't, and the rapid blinking lights seem to be distracting your shots, and are objectively unnecessarily cluttering your screen.
Once you get a hang for the way to play this thing, it's incredibly powerful even in uptiers. The climb rate is better than anything you face even in full uptiers, and you can get above everybody and just BnZ them or stall them out. It's not a good idea to go too fast since it compresses badly at higher speeds, and can rip in level flight. I found it best to use the airbrake to stay around 650-750km/h in dives, get too much faster and aiming the guns becomes really tricky. I havent really tried using the afterburners to win rate fights, the engine power lets you dominate in the vertical so well it hasn't been necessary.
"I havent really tried using the afterburners to win rate fights, the engine power lets you dominate in the vertical so well it hasn't been necessary." This is how it should be flown. In the video where Tim is turn fighting a number of Soviet jets and a 262 had any of them either not held down the elevator and burned themselves out of energy they all would have eventually come around and shot Tim down. Thankfully most players hold the elevator down and just bleed all of their speed rather than maintain over 300mph in a turn in a jet. All jets complete a turn much faster going above 300mph than they do below 300mph with the exceptions of maybe the 229 and P-59A. The F-89s best turn is around 550-600mph. All Tim needed to do to get out of that bad situation without ever getting hit was go into the vertical via a spiral and use his superior thrust to regain the positional advantage. He would have needed good awareness to see the 262 coming but it is what it is. This all said Tim could very fairly argue that what he did was for demonstration and that is totally fair. That said it still would be nice to have seen Tim then transition into what he should have been doing rather than just flat turning. Small nitpicky gripe about the video but the video is fine overall.
@@rainsilent I would mostly blame that on the instructor though, it's designed to turn any aircraft on the verge of a stall so gradual maneuvers with mouse aim just don't feel good and take up too much focus when dogfighting, if that ever changes there would be a lot of balancing needed though lol, some of these birds can be busted when flown in proper thresholds.
@ Keyboard inputs max out the turn too though, the only way to do it is to move the mouse slowly but you can't do that with free look while the target camera is wonky for 1vX fights, I think you misunderstood what I'm talking about here.
@@Tacticaviator7 I don't misunderstand at all. You seem to be unaware of proper technique with the keyboard. Keyboard inputs don't max the turn if you tap continuously, or if you press less with a mechanical that has a lot of usable travel so that you can set it to work like a very short throw joystick.

Virgin F-89 vs Chad F6F
Now we just NEED the F89-D review.
Probably later this year.
If anyone ever visits Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX, they have one on display with a model nuke that it fired.
Top notch content, as always uncle Tim.
To my understanding the proximity fuses used in AAA by the US navy in WW2 had miniaturized radars in them to tell them when to blow up.
Yea but theyre 5in shells. Much larger than 20mm
True, but if you want individual radars on turrets for their fire control it should be possible. Granted the issue is power supply but still.

It’s ugly, yet somehow gorgeous at the same time. Gotta love early cold war jets
Definitely looks like a chunky cousin to the t33/ p-80 family of first gen jets😂
Place both this and the D in a 6.7 arcade lineup, and you have the best opening I think you can ever bring into an air AB match
Really hope they add the f89j at 8.0 with genies and aim4cs (early ir versions of the falcon)
I'm fairly convinced we'll never get the AIM-4 or K-5 in the game.
@TimsVariety probably not, but a man can dream 😆

it's 2025 and we still don't have radar gunsights modeled on these radar-gunsighted planes?
Other vers that are in files that COULD come into the standard tree, their time is long gone now. Same for the Intruder.
