Fuji said that lenses won't resolve the 40MP sensor only WIDE OPEN (and others have said issues are mostly at the corners). I bought the X-T5 as my first Fuji camera with the XF 16-80mm F4 and on the sweetspots I got good sharpness. I also bought the XC 55-230mm OIS II and I got unexpectedly good details from some wildlife subjects with this camera (and of course not so great with very far subjects at the longer end). This week I got the XF 35mm F2 R WR and on quick tests I am still seeing good sharpness. I will test it more this weekend but I regret NOTHING as buying this as my very first brand new camera, love it.
I completely agree with you Tudor - for EXACTLY THE SAME REASONS. I use my Fujifilm for travel. I was saddened when the X-T5 paired with my f/2 lenses on a recent trip turned out the way they did. I would not have returned my X-T5 if it were 26 megapixels. I love my XH2S for events and wildlife, but for street photography, I will stick to my X-T30II and my Nikon Z50.
I will have to disagree with you. I have found the X-T5 AF great. If you are viewing your pictures at 100 per cent then you will be viewing the 40mp image at a much larger size than a 26mp image viewed at 100 percent. When viewing or printing images at the same size, shot with the same lens, the 40mp image will have more detail and lower noise. You can also turn the C mode settings to auto save so that any AF or other changes you make will be saved so you don’t lose them when turning the camera off. I shoot Sony FF, Fuji and M4/3 and the X-T5 is my favourite.
my cousen got the xt5 recently and paired it with new lenses 18 1.4 and 56 1.2...borrowed the body for few days and tried with my 27 2.8 and 23 2.0 .. didnt like the results I got compared the ones taken with my old beloved xt3..Having said that, the new lenses on my xt3 works like a charm..
I had the same thoughts while watching Tudor's video. Indeed we all wish to have the uncompromising quality on fujicrons, but it's not possible. There will be some compromise but still very good images. For the best possible quality there are lenses like 16-55 f 2.8, 18,23,33 f 1.4 lm wr, 90 f2.0 lm wr and others. So saying that system is not ready for 40 mp is simply not correct.
@@caglartunca34 I haven't been to the fujifilm system until the x-t5. I have owned 23 2.0 lens and the amount of detail was incredible. The 16 2.8 and 27 2.8 seem to deliver less detail, but the image quality is still very good. When paired with 33 1.4, 90 2.0, 16-55 2.8, 150-600, you get uncompromised image quality.
V interesting. I agree with you. I want the xt5 for better auto focus and for ibis (I use Russian lenses and Lensbay without autofocus and several Fuji primes without IS. therefore I need ibis. I will shoot JPEG in Medium because I don’t need any more pixels🤣🤣. Has Fuji updated the firmware to solve the Q menu? I want to change lenses and know that the Q menu remains the same. Can you clarify please??
They need to provide a firmware update so that: - ISO dial can be used to set the max ISO in Auto ISO mode - SS dial can be used to set the min shutter speed in Auto ISO mode Such change would make the dials really useful is more challenging situation. They are useful for landscape or when you have time to prepare your shot, but not in more dynamic set-up. Also they need to provide [M] Raw size (for when the lens is not sharp enough or when the shooter does not need the resolution). Edit (after the comment from Tudor): And finally they need to continue to improve the autofocus. I've bought a A7Cii for these reasons and the clarity is night and day... But the SOOC colors are much better on Fuji.
I know what you mean, But Fujifilm have been clear abour about optimised lenses for that sensor. The raw file editing in LR always never been great for xtrans files, but i find using the enhancing function helps. There is the iridient plugin as well. Ultimately Capture one would be the best way to go.
In my opinion, the Fujicrons give a lot of detail on 40 mp. I have printed some pictures from xf 23 2.0 and the amount of detail was incredible. Even smallest blicks on glasses, etc. However, if you stick with newest 1.4 lm wr lenses, they will simply deliver the best image quality possible. Therefore, in my opinion, you have some flexibility on 40 mp: either uncompromising quality on the lm wr lenses, or just very good quality on fujicron lenses. I have a question, what kind of settings do you change while switching lenses?
For 35mm F1.4 eye AF and AF-c is not reliable as the AF the newer lenses. So it works better with af-s. On Sony all lenses are working great with AF-c and/or eye AF.
Excellent review. I only shoot JPEG (because Fuji JPEGs are fantastic). I was keen to upgrade from my Xh1 to XT5 due to slow autofocus on XH1. But I use Q menu for adjusting highlights and shadows for street photography at night. I want to change lenses and save my Q menu. Your review is the only review to mention these important cons. I shall stick with my XT3 which has good autofocus…. and wait for XT6 which hopefully addresses the Q saving. Great reviews, thank you
i don't think fuji will ever revisit those f2 primes as they are the past not the future, Fuji is changing, the XT line is not premium any longer. The build quality of the XT3 is supreme, but all the money goes into the XH line now and maybe future X100 cameras. I think you are spot on though, you need to spend too much money to get high quality from the XT5 and new lenses. As you say a good MFT camera and lens will give you the same quality as the XT5 and fujicron lenses. I 'm in the market for a new camera but i don't know where to go yet.
I have an X-T30 (which has been great) and I'm thinking of getting the Viltrox 27mm F1.2. If I switched to a Sony A7CII what would be an equivalent full frame lens (with similar sharpness, size etc) for under £400/$500? Does such a lens exist? If it doesn't, I might just stick with Fujifilm and Viltrox and upgrade to the new X-T40 rather than the XT-5 next year.
Not really. But I would advise to look at Sony 40mm f2.5 and Samyang 45mm f1.8. Very sharp, great lenses and with good bokeh and very fast AF. But nothing replace Fujifilm for the colors.
Thanks, that f1.8 lens looks nice and small and good value for money, but not as sharp as the Viltrox. I'm not super set on the wider angle, but I want a f1.8 or better, so it might be easier to find a good sharp 50mm. I think I might need to up the budget for that though, as most of the affordable options seem a bit soft.
Interesting points Tudor. The quality issue you highlight is such a deal breaker for me - the presence of a well built camera in the hand tells you so much about the brand. I know manufacturing is in difficult place at the moment with costs and supply chains, so a discernible drop in quality across brands is more or less par for the course, but Fuji's model strategy and direction is frustrating to an early adopter like me for whom high quality materials/Kaizen philosophy etc. was what attracted me in the first place. I'll be sticking with my XPro 2 for the time being, and unless the XPro 4 has the same build quality and simplicity of use it will be time to look at not investing in any new Fuji cameras to concentrate on Leica. Not a bad thing I guess, but very sad after 10 years with the company...
If you don't want or have the budget for the latest Fujifilm lenses then xs-20 / xh2s could be a choice. Or the smaller XT30ii just for photography. It depends on the budget and for what you need the camera to do.
33 1.4 on X-T5 is amazingly sharp. 27 is pretty good. 70-300 is very sharp but I couldn’t get crisp images of moving subjects no matter how high I set the SS.. yet an A7IV had no problem with the 24-105 in same scenario. I disliked the X-T5 & 40 MP at first but it’s grown on me. I’ve got some amazing images since.. but I am trying the Nikon Zf and the Z 50 1.8 is calling my name.
Luckily I have a 50mm F2 that has good quality but this is really concerning stuff. I too also noticed the downgrade in build quality of the camera itself and I too zoomed into photos I took and noticed clarity degradation/softness in a lot of photos. I bought my camera used and only had it for 2 weeks now, so I need to play around with it still but this is disappointing right now. I hope they can fix the resolution through firmware updates soon if that's even a thing.
I'm sticking with my xt2 and xt4. Next camera to complement them probably will be a7 III(second hand) or new Lumix s5 II(great deals going with cashback now). Till Fuji matches Sony or Canon with AF I won't be investing more into their systems. Fuji should have keep 26 megapixel sensor and concentrate on build quality and AF.
Delivering the dials in plastic is a major mistake. Nobody who buys a fuji xt wants plastic. The quality that 26 mp sensors deliver is always sufficient for me and for an A3 print. The 40 mp therefore wastes more money in the backend, especially in computing power. Unfortunately, it has to be said that Nikon has done a better job with the nikon zf. And let's see. Do I want the film look in my pictures that all other fuji users have? I'm currently using an Olympus M1.3, a small, solid, handy camera, made as if milled from a block. If I'm ever ambushed on an evening walk, I'll use this camera as a striking tool and then continue taking pictures in peace.
This won’t be popular .. long time Fuji shooter here.. 16-80 might be the worst lens ever made by Fuji. Not sharp. Bad AF.. tried 2 copies and both had horrendous lens creep (actually drop) at 23mm+.
PLASTIC or cheap i don't care it wont show on the picture anyway and when a new model is out we trade it for the new anyway so what is buildquallety worth this is a fuji canon nikon sony trend LEICA people dont they are more loyal
