Even if you are not new to the Fujifilm range of cameras, it's so important to make sure you know and use every available custom setting on the cameras. I love my Fujifilm X-T5 X-T4 and X100v because of the amount of customisation you can do. I hope you found FujiFilm tips helpful.
    Thanks for watching

An outstanding video. He moves fast but covers a great deal of information. Even if I don't mirror all his settings, it's good to know why he chooses what he chooses. It's also an extremely well-lit video so that one can clearly see all the buttons and menu choices he's talking about. Thanks

THANK you! I've had the XT5 a couple of days and had worked out most things, but there were one or two I didn't know about, like using boost. Nicely and clearly presented. BTW I use that little top button thingy near the shutter to change metering mode.

Great video thanks Gareth. I've watched a couple like this but many of your tips were new, and well worthwhile. I also liked how you didn't muck around explaining where to go - knew we could find out. Some of my preferences differ, but it's just how each individual shoots. I'd be interested to se how you set the camera up for colours, sharpness and exposure - I found I needed to tweak it a bit to get the look I wanted.

Really enjoyed this video! I replaced my X-T2 with an X-T5 6 months ago. Initially I set up the custom settings for Landscape, Wildlife, and Portraits, but didn’t give enough thought to what I should include. It was a bit frustrating. Plus, the “new” Fuji x app wasn’t working. So, I reset it to the default recently. I’ve assigned different functions to the buttons outlined in this great video. What a game changer accessing the D pad for turning on/off IS when hand held or on tripod. And, assigning the button in front for image review. I’ll revisit this video again to see if I should assign functions to other buttons. My little pea brain can only handle so many changes at one time!
Oh, and after the reset the Fuji app transfers images to my phone now. Don’t use it a ton, but is nice when I’m traveling without my laptop. Thanks again!

Hi Gareth. I really enjoyed your presentation and am inspired to comment! Just setting up my XT5 in my very amateurish way, I've now watched several excellent RUclips guides, all very illuminating, but strikingly different. One tells me that the Q menu is super-useful, while another never uses it! Several recommend saving data to RAW + JPEG, while you dismiss that as useless. I could perhaps produce several more examples, but I think much depends on whether you are appealing to a professional or (like me) a hobbyist. So far I've come across very little about the use of the custom settings (7 savings banks) - I seem to remember reading one review in which they were regarded as the best invention since sliced bread, but presumably those (like you) who omit them are not that keen on them. My main enthusiasm is as team manager of 20 cadet table tennis players, keen on having action shots taken - so, indoor light, fast action, hand held. I've done okay so far with XT2 and XT3, shutter speed around 1/500, 11 fps, enough keepers to do the job, all JPEGs, sequential. I mainly use the XF 50mm f2 lens; once got fine results with 90mm f2. Wondering whether to try the new 56 mm 1.2 or 33mm 1.4. But first I'll stick to 50mm and see how the XT5 performs, maybe trying RAW, but will the buffer cope?

On the Nikon Z7ii there is a setting called exposure delay mode (max of 3 seconds), which I use instead of the timer for landscapes. I put it on my “i” menu, and it stays persistent from session to session even when turning the camera off and on. Maybe it is available on the Z7 also???

I don’t know or haven’t worked out why in the menu for command dial, it gives three settings for front and one for rear, I’m probably being thick, but it’s not logical and I don’t understand it!?

For release/focus priority, I do the opposite and always make sure to have it on release priority - I usually focus with the AF-ON button (X-T4) or AEL/AFL button (X100F) and the last thing I want is for the camera to decide that I can't take the photo just because it has changed its mind (or I shifted the view a bit) and now believes the subject is no longer in focus - not to forget those occasions when a slightly out-of-focus photo at the right moment is preferable to a perfectly sharp photo of whatever happened later.
So while I disagree on the preferable setting, I agree completely that people should be aware of release/focus priority, and make sure it is set appropriately for their button setup and handling style.

Agree 💯 but only if you using back focus button if not then could be set for focus priority.
Setting to release priority its even better if you shoot in burst mode as I notice that if using back focus button and your priority is focus its kind of confusing camera

    Hi Garethm, X100V user here...
It's really nice to see how different people customize their camera in their own way depending on their shooting type.
I use the AEL/AFL one to lock exposure.
The one next to the shutter release button on the top plate, to lock focus when using auto focus.
The front one (inside the OVF and EVF switch) to cycle the different view modes while shooting, viewfinder...lcd...etc
Holding the front switch to the right to toggle focus check.
When in manual focus I press the rear dial for back button focusing.
Front dial is useless for me.
And in the Q menu I only use the custom settings, film simulation, Dynamic range, and face/eye detection.
Touch screen always off unless in playback.
hope my 2 cents help somebody :)

I think PRE-AF can be handy if you are looking for and view, and it automatically focuses on the spot you want it to focus, the one you set your focusing region (single point, zone, etc. area on the camera). Otherwise if I zoom it, everything is blurry and I need to press AF ON button or half press shutter button for it to focus, but with PRE-AF ON I don't need to press anything, since most of the time if the objects are clear, basically while it isn't a clear sky where camera can't understand it, then it will focus automatically on objects or the scene. So it is handy. Otherwise it's all blurry.
The front right button near the lens that you had for playback, I changed it to Image Size, and left the playback to its original button, which is next to the trash bin button.

Xt4 is a fantastic camera. You won't regret it and it's future proof.
First thing to do: READ THE MANUAL!
The auto mode is the best there is to discover a new camera and get used to its overall functioning. Then go semi auto whether it's iso, SS or aperture priority, understand the jpegs, the raw, the relationship between settings and bit by bit you'll understand everything.
One tip though: TAKE NOTES at every steps of your camera/photography discovery. It'll help you make correlations and help you remember every setting or technique and you can always go back to the notes in case you forgot something.

@@REMY.C. Thank you for words of wisdom. I do have a little black book where I am taking copious notes as I have graduated to using the triangle and the exposure compensation dial. So I am feeling so much more confident than I did many years ago shooting film on auto. Through this, I am discovering my particular aesthetic. I have a few favourite RUclips presenters that I often watch, sometimes several times, and take a tonne of notes there too. I am truly indebted to people like Gareth. Thank you again for time and your advice.

    • @REMY.C.
      @REMY.C. Год назад +1

@@rhondanadasdy7390 you're welcome. If you're looking to find your aesthetics, I have only one advice I always give: photography is about sight and you already have that sense, vision on the other hand takes training and time, just look at thousands and thousands of photos of the "masters" or very good photographers and your brain will start putting things together and you'll develop a taste for this or that style, even unconsciously. Copying is part of the process and it'll lead one day or another to finding the path to your own aesthetics. Also if you want to be the best of yourself, don't be of those who think they're born artists, be very hard on yourself and criticize every single photo you see and take. If you manage to do that, you'll be the best judge of your own work and the single photo you choose from the 10000 you shot will be the best and the one you'll be proud to show.
Wish you a very happy photography journey.

A setting I always enable is something like "don't delete files on the backup card when they're deleted on the main one". It avoids any mistake because when you delete files by pressing DELETE, it will only delete them from the main SD card and you won't even see them anymore by pressing play button but they'll still be there on the backup, lurking in the shadows.
It's also very handy and sneaky if someone asks you to delete the picture so you can show that person that photos are gone*.

I know this is an Old video, but as a studio photographer, and for event printing and presentation, three of your recommendations I don't use. (I agree with most)
Sounds - I leave focus confirmation beep on, this is to aid with speed when time constrained to photo and when engaging with models when everything is framed etc. you know you have got focus without looking at screen again - keeping model focused on you not looking down etc.
Focusing Light - Leave on for 2 reasons, shoot in studio in almost pitch black and try to focus without it (granted it may also come from using cameras with Contrast based Autofocus in the past, which can not focus in as low light as PD autofocus) and second reason is as as tally light for video so people know when the camera is rolling, or when self recording.
Camera Backup settings - Normal mode is mirroring (data backed up to 2nd card) however, RAW on one card, JPEG on other I use during event photography (not weddings) as during the event instant prints are made from jpeg files and sold to clients (think similar to fair ground ride photos, they need to be ready by the time you leave the ride). having camera set to Raw on slot 1, jpeg on slot 2 allows you to remove the slot 2 card, hand to person working printer, place new card in slot 2 and continue shooting. This also works for events that want photos fast to put up on screen

No!!! I know!! I can’t believe this. Why do fuji change things for the worse. No back button dial and odd menu changes.

The X-T3 loses the self timer mode when it powers down too, bloody annoying.

"shoot w/o card on" is for cameras lying in the shops, where people want to try.

Your videos, but has anyone ever told you you have the same mannerisms out of that dude out of the office show. He just reminds me of you I know you don’t look anything like him but oh my gosh it makes me laugh anyway back to the school I think the reason the camera has shoot without lens is for cleaning the sensor. Would that be right?

    • @GarethDanks

Haha. Hilarious yeah I get that a bit. My mate thinks the same. And I’m an idiot off camera 😂 that mode is for vintage lenses and lenses like the Samyang 12mm mki without contacts. 😁👍🏻

@@GarethDanks Yes that’s right … now I remember because I have that adapter where you can use the Nikon lenses, and I use the vintage Nikon lens and initially it didn’t work, but then it did after changing that setting from memory. Anyway, glad you took that in the right spirit it’s one of my favourite shows. We should do one called the photographer. It would be hilarious ha ha … Have a good day

I'm in Australian and the American guys just annoyed me because most of them shout when they're doing videos. Why did they shout when they are doing RUclips videos we are sitting 2 inches from the screen ha ha

It is a shame. Sadly there were too many problems chasing people, language issues and people wanted free copies if they were featured. Brexit postage costs and problems and production prices were main factors too.

Fuji drives me crazy with their false and truly confusing nomenclature like the Eco / Normal/ Boost power mode. The so called boost is just the TRUE NORMAL mode in which AF works as it's programmed to do and the evf ovf have their native refresh rate, definition and luminosity.
It's exactly like their crappy -5.0.+5 choices. The 0 doesn't necessarily mean "does nothing" like it should and it's not even consistent in all menus.
