It’s pronounced “D-Yon”, she’s Whitney Houston’s aunt. Cynthia is incredible. She’s about to play Alpheba in the movie Wicked, and she was in color purple on Broadway. Check out her Legendary Voices concert from the Albert Hall. Incredible.

It's pronounced 'De On '. Yes in America this was major hit for Dionne.

Well, losten to this, it's a lorra lorra laffs, because Alfie was the theme song for a 1966 British film of the same name, which was about the misadventures of a cockney womanizer, played by Michael Caine. Written by the famous songwriting partnership, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, it was originally slated to be sung by Dionne (_DEE-on_) Warwick. However, it was decided that, given the film's subject, it should be sung by a British singer. Sandie Shaw turned the song down before it was offered to ... Cilla Black! Liverpool's very own! Even then, however, she was reluctant to sing a song about an anti-hero called Alfie. ("Shouldn't he be called Tarquin or something?" she later said she had asked). She only agreed on various conditions that Bacharach be personally involved in the project to such an extent that he would never agree to them. Much to her chagrin, he meekly agreed to her demands, and so she became the first artist to release the song, a few months before the movie opened, scoring a top 10 hit in the uk, and a minor hit in the US.
By the time Warwick recorded the song, about a year later, several other aritists had recorded versions, including one by a very young Cher! In fact, so many that she was reluctant to add her own attempt to the pile, but she eventially did it while recording in London, when some free time in the studio became available. Warwick's version was released as a B-side to another Bacharach/David composition, but DJ's preferred Alfie and began flipping the single. Thus it achieved its greatest chart success in the US with the singer Bacharach/David had wanted all along. Alfie became part of her core concert repertoire.
Although Alfie began life as somethibg of an unwanted child, it is today recognized as one of Bacharach/David's finest songs, and together with the film, it is hugely evocative of a specific era and place, London in the swinging sixties. Burt Bacharach has said that of his own compositions, Alfie was his favourite. That's saying something, because his catalogue is stuffed with a ridiculous number of standards of the era - too many to mention in fact. But Cilla had also had a hit with another Bacharach/David song, "Anyone Who Had a Heart". Hope that encourages you to do some homework!
