Hi Marjo & An! I'm always happy to see a new video from you. I look forward to more cooking videos in the new kitchen, and learning more from you about storing and preparing food in the Mentawais. I'm also happy to just sit back for the journey. It's so different from the type of subsistence, off-grid living I'm familiar with in North America. I'm curious what types of fish and other sea foods are most often eaten there.
Yes! I am fascinated by open fire primitive cooking methods. I also like simple food inspiration for my lifestyle and I share my food with my dog too. Simple, whole foods are best for us. Seeing you gather from Nature is comforting. I hope you don't set aside these skills as you modernize your home. Blessings from NH, USA
I grew up in a world that you're living in right now. I remember eating like you're eating. Our family living with the native people within our community. My mother was a medical doctor had eight nurses living with us and they were all like sisters to me. I was the little boy that they all watched over. It's very nice to watch your videos.
It's impressive how many skills you develop in an environment that stimulates you. I'm glad I discovered your channel, you are a beautiful couple and make a good team.
You're doing what most people can't or are afraid to do...living the dream. And you're taking all of us along for the journey. Thank you! Your content is very interesting especially for those of us who enjoy building stuff. I love watching An build and maintain things. More explanation of the details would be great, such as the type of wood and such. It was only by watching your show that I learned about using coconut tree wood. I always thought it was too fibrous. And your explanation of the day to day routine--the local foods, cooking, island dangers, etc.--is all very interesting. And your production--sound quality and editing--is top notch. Keep it up.
Ooh thank you for such a nice comment! And yes, we’d love to get more into detail about some things, we were never sure if people are interested in those little things but it seems they are! Thank you for watching! 🙏🏼
Yes, details would be great as everything is so different from western world. I'd love to hear more about the flavor profile or texture and how to cook it. We need lessons :-) . Too, any background on the foods would be interesting as well. Is it native to the area or was it introduced...what other foods could it compare to or what other foods are related. Any info is good, in my opinion.
I love the dog food shell “bowls” 🤩🤩🤩 also curious about An’s tattoos they are very unique what is their meaning ? Oh and one more question is the chili sauce spicy?
We are new subscribers, we love watching your videos from Australia. You have pea eggplants, very common in Thai cuisine. We have them growing at our home on the mid north east coast. Much nicer cooked, put in curry.
similiar like Lenca in West Java...Lenca (Solanum nigrum) is a plant member of the eggplant tribe (Solanaceae)... thats known as a vegetable and is also a medicinal ingredient...
Every video l watch - and l have binge watched so many now - my respect for this incredible young woman increases. She is always so positive and engaging - and her high level of English bowls me over evrry time...Where did you learn to speak it so well Marjolaine? You met An when you were 23 - what did you do before that? How does your family feel about your lifestyle - very proud l'm sure - but they can't visit easily and must miss you so much
Ooh thank you ☺️ I actually learned English because of watching Friends as a teenager haha. After that I traveled and worked abroad a lot so my English came in handy. And An and I met because we were both working fir neighboring surf resorts here in Mentawai ☺️
Cooking isn't cool???? I think it is wonderful and I enjoy all of the cooking content that you share. Although everything you've shared is just amazing to watch. It provides a great sense of serenity. The best to you both!
These beans are called gully beans or susumber in our island of Jamaica 🇯🇲. They’re a bit bitter and have medicinal properties. Just came across your channel and loving the peaceful life and laidback lifestyle.
It’s awesome that ur husband is getting more comfortable with the camera thing. I always imagine that must be most difficult thing having a RUclips channel so tell him his English is getting better and everyone can see ur both awesome people n we’re excited to learn more
You are so likeable! Living in the tropics looks easy from the outside but it's loaded with challenges, especially for people born in temperate places.
01:03, likewise we eat it with tea or coffee in the mornings and for other meals with mung beans or meat stew....it used to be so common due to abundance in productivity but now it's becoming rare due to poor weather that only the rich can afford it 01:45, the flask😂😂, my mother has lots of them, some older than me when Thermos used to do the metallic checked bodies
@@OurIslandLife oh i love it im working in a wonderful family here in Kraainem Suburb between Tervuren And Kraainem and i love it 😊hope to see more videos from U here in youtube
Hello Marjo & An, I love your channel. Do you ever worry about tsunami's? Do you have a plan or a safe place to go? Pet and chicken plan? It looks like you are quite close to the beach. How would your solar equipment fare in such an event? Is it high ip enough or back far from the beach? Hope this question doesn't make you worry or stress. It might be a good idea for an episode. 😁😁 ❤❤
Hallo Marjo and An... I'm a new subscriber here and I love all your videos... I am just wondering if you have internet or WiFi or how do you upload your videos... thank you and have a nice day...
Thank you for subscribing! Over the past year we always had to drive somewhere else with our boat to get wifi and upload to YT. But now we just got Starlink!
Tanamlah Jenis tumbuhan yang penting untuk persediaan makanan seperti pepaya. Nangka (jack fruit).karena buah mentahnya bisa di masak. Jenis sayuran seperti kangkung dan bayam kakap juga mudah ditanam.
What a nice Friday evening I have right now. Just back from work, chilling for weekend and watching your new video. I wanna ask you.. How do you connect to the internet. Do you need to go in certain place for it?
Hey! Yes, about once a week we go to an area in the islands where there is 4g. Unfortunately there’s a hill in the middle of our island blocking that signal so we only have very week 4g once in a while and we usually have to walk out on the reef on the low tide to get it 😂
Continue with your”beautiful” lifestyje; Continue to grow more edibles so you have lots of harvests. Do you have a freezer? Maybe. get your proteins in town and save in your freezer?’
Great video! 👏🏽 Do you cook the taro in salted water, and is it true that its texture changes when it’s cold? Besides, I think that 95% of my relatives and friends wouldn’t be able to handle the portion size, as they would probably think they’re starving. I believe that most people here eat way too much. 🙈
So you eat that green fruit that looks like pea? We have them in our village too, but we don't eat them. I'm scared if I try cooking it, it might kill me.

Thank you Mitzi! Yes, will definitely do more cooking videos, probably with fish as that’s what we eat most of the time :)
They are called Turkey berries and also known as terong pipit. I use a lot in Thai curries. It’s a family of the eggplant.
I think how you are feeding your dogs is so much more healthy then dog food, there are very lucky ☺️
💯💯
Your cooking in the old kitchen i& outside is much more interesting than all the videos in modern kitchens
😆☺️

Sounds yum!
