Nobody ever mentions La Binerie Mont Royal, which I would say is more quintessential Montreal, but not so rich. In Mile End and Outremont (e.g. Bernard St.) you'll also find more outdoor terraces where Montrealer's go for brunch and beers in the afternoon. Montreal is not about extreme foods. It is more about an easy-going experience, often with a mish-mash of cuisines. Vietnamese, Lebanese, Italian and even Korean are very popular fast food alternatives. The restaurants in the South West on Notre-Dame are also becoming the hotspot for the locals, while Old Montreal and the downtown core are popular visitor spots. Very popular among locals along the Lachine canal in the summer, McAulsan brewery has a huge beer garden type outdoor terrace which is perfect just for enjoying the weather. There are actually two Chinatowns, one off St-Laurent and de LaGauchetière (the original) which is shrinking due to an aging population, and a newer one in the Guy-Concordia area, which is growing because it caters o the increasing Asian student population. Here you'll find lower priced meals, but more informal and bustling dining rooms (no table cloths). In NDG (west of Décarie) and Monkland you can also find some Korean places that are liked by the locals. Also off Décarie is Deli Snowdon, where locals go for smoked meat, when they don't want to stand outside waiting in line!
One thing to note - the poutine at Ma Poule Mouillée isn’t made with the traditional cheddar cheese curds, but rather with a Portuguese cheese called Sao Jorge.
