I sure appreciate the additional info. I recently bought a handful of gently used servos off Marketplace, which included a couple of your SHV500v3 as well as two Reefs units. Having stabbed one of each into a couple of my crawlers, I'm learning the differences in how and why they do what they do. Always nice to hear from the "head honcho" about a product! And, holy cow, these things are impressive. I had no idea!
As an aside, my only complaint about 25T spline counts (or 23T for that matter) is that because of the odd number of splines, the mounting orientation of the servo will dictate whether the servo horn rests nice and centered in the neutral position, or not. Sometimes, link lengths or physical barriers will dictate that a servo can only be mounted one way or the other- leading to the neutral position being off center. Granted, that's why we have subtrim adjustment on our radio gear, but it kinda bugs me all the same. I guess I'm a little OCD about that or something.
Regardless... Thank you!
Thank you thank you for all these “basic” videos…they will be an everlasting source on your channel of great info and great shenanigans! Enjoying every minute!
U remind me to the URC dude miss that guy, just like him you explain things like I do with my kids very easy to understand.
When I tuned in I didn't have any questions about servos. But like so many areas of the rc industry, I simply didn't know that I didn't know. Nor what questions to ask.
Thank you, John, for explaining & breaking down a servo's function into dissectible slices. I can really sink my teeth into these types of videos and I just learned a BUNCH more info that, without which, I would have continued ignoring high-dollar servos.
I do have one question: A few of my 2nd-hand servos have the word 'Life' printed on them. Why?
Life is for lithium iron. The old "hv" servos couldn't take a regular charged lipo. Life has a lower voltage.
Can’t wait to see you go in to these deeper levels of learning thank you Mr Holmes
I have the SHV800 mounted on the front axle of my Ecto.. love it!!!!
most entertaining rc content creator I've seen yet!
I’m loving this basic electronic component series. 🤙🏽 if you ever become an instructor at a college, i will take that course. Haha.
Edit: I received my esc’s and LP servo today! Super stoked! 👍🏼 and a new sticker sheet?!
Thats some of the funniest stuff I've seen on RUclips lately thank you for being you!!!
Can we get a demo on bump steer and what “upgrades” to avoid that can make your steering worse ?
Awesome video bud. I love the products. Was wandering if your gonna make the beat the creek trip in Maysville KY? Would love to see you out there
Just ordered a shv500 servo and a revolver classic to go in my trx4 sport kit. Super exited to give these electronics a shot! Will be running on 3s with copperhead esc
Great video! Perfect explanation!
Also, what servo horn and what length do you like running on your element with the shv500lp?
Maybe you can email Spektrum on the servo spline recommendation 😀
Cheers mate have a great weekend 👍
Spektrum blows. Bought a servo for my LMT. Never again.
Great video and pretty informative which as a noob I definitely need. Just building my first kit crawler and I think the SHV-LP will be going in. Cheers and thanks for posting 💥💯🤙
John, What servo horn are you using and what length is it? Got two purple SHV500 LP’s to install on my Element and element based V3 build. Heard I should be running a longer horn so figured ask.
This video taught me a lot about servos that I didn't know before. I have a 25 kg Dc4.8~6.8v DS3225MG digital servo (with 3 wires black, red and white)...guess how long it'll take me to fry something electrical on my 1/10 6x6.
Hey John was wondering if you make a 1/5 scale servo?
I need that purple servo been watching an hoping it comes back in stock, the purple motor is naked without it, why it still sits in its box lol. The V3 stubnose V3 a beast!!!
Do you aim your service pacifically towards crawling in the market. if not what would you run in a 6s Basher like a Kraton or something like it ?
Great info, thank you
Very informative thanks for the info.
Lot's of info. Thank you. I'm building a "yakimaran" and am thinking about using a servo to steer (I'm already using a Quikrun 880 for speed control) so I would end up with a remote control boat that My wife and I can ride in. The motor is a trolling motor with the head lopped off so I can easily put an arm on it. Can you recommend a servo for this. I'm using a 4S LiFePo for my power source if it matters.
Lmao 🤣. Love your sense of humor. I appreciate all of your content. I Have learned a lot in your informative videos. Thanks for everything you do.
thanks for watching!
Could you use the brushless servo motor on a scale winch with a small separate box for the servo electronics to run the motor & wiring for the motor?
I’d love to try one of your servo’s but anything for my 1:10 scale is sold out I keep checking. I’ll recheck I don’t need the most expensive just the right match for a 1:10 scale crawler. Also how does a hobbywings 2in1 with built in esc work with a high volt servo? Any issues? Thanks
Awesome walk through of steering servos 👍 🙂 I'm looking for a servo to work as a winch. I know it gets its 6v from the esc. But how many amps can a receiver give?
I'm looking for a new steering servo for my TF3,is your SHV 500 LP direct power servo overkill?
Great video today thanks for the information
Slendid 😊
Hahaha love the start of the vid quality 👌😆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can you get speed and power out of just 6v? I don't care for all the extra wires anything you can recommend?
Are you still keeping the shv800 or are they being phased out like the original shv500 for a newer version and if you are keeping them when will they be back in stock?????
A lot of videos out there talking about servos and almost none of them talk about the internal potentiometers. Is there any info on the position feedback electronics? Could they use hall effect sensors or encoders? Potentiometers have a limited number of cycles.
I may make video on this
Just a quick question, how about solenoids or linear actuators? I've been curious about controlling the dig function with something along that line.
It seems the logics for selecting A or B would be easier to create in a small package if you didn't need anything in-between.
I've seen things like that used in animatronics.
Very cool stuff you do, I'm currently waiting patiently for a speed controller for my new 2200 revolver. Its going in a 5 pound portal low cg crawler.
Loving your SVH650 on 3S. It pushes the rocks to the side, and opens up it's own path. Hah.
Hope you and yours are happy.
Be well and have fun.
Dear Mr. Holmes, I recently picked up a HH revolver 2200kv to pair with a Castle SW4 I had sitting around. I LOVE the control of the motor, but it has an ear splitting whine at about 1/4 throttle. Is there any way to tone that down?
It's installed in a Trx4 Defender, stock pinion running on 3s currently.
Wouldn’t an advantage of SOA be less sprung weight?
Are any of your servos built for racing instead of crawling? I race Slash on the carpet oval and figure 8.
I really need a new servo for trx4 k10 high trail edition. What would you put in it?
I'm running the shv650 an shv500 lp an really like how they perform, they take my 3lb crawlers an toss em around like a ragdolls of need be😂 😅. Will there be a new servo coming out in 2024?
And when can we expect the other servos to be back in stock? I want an 800 for my gspeed but could only find a 500lp
What angle of deflection or motion do I buy? Is 180 degrees ok? Too much? Building a Tamiya Hornet re-release kit.
@@CollinBaillie 90 to 120 is standard depending on your horn length
@@CollinBaillie you could turn down epas to use a 180 though
Any recommendations for the upgrade FMS Fj40 steering servo? I notice when there is no load on the front tires they have a certain turn radius. When the weight of the vehicle is on the front tires they much larger turning radius
Hello John. Please what’s the ETA on the SHV 800 servo? I want that servo for my Losi LMT.
What difference between coreless vs brushless servo?
What about core vs brushed servo?
I heard with the new gt3c comes with a built in gyro, how do you set it?
For direct power servos, what size battey lasts approx how long? Lets use 3s as an example..
Are there any ESC becs that you feel safe using? i understand that any that offer tend to only offer up to 7.4v, but figured Id ask anyway. ive taken on the hobby by jumping in with both feet, and amassing 7 1/10s in a little over a year that I am replacing, and upgrading, almost all at 1 time. I certainly crave a handful of HH and Reefs servos, but will have to take on 1 at a time, especially since I'll need to get some batteries for them as well. These Amazon specials (25 &35kg) were fine, but aren't cutting the mustard, and 1 just cooked while the rig was sitting still. Lucky I didn't lose my Fusion....
I wish you offered the shv500lp in both power/rx wire setups
Me to man. That's what I was hoping gor.
You mean a 7.4v version too?
No the original style with the rx wire and the jst lead. Atleast I believe that's what he meant. That's what I meant. But then saw you said your going to go back.
@@ConsciousnessAndScience yeah the power wire and jst lead.
"A decade ago when 7.4 was high voltage"....ok now your making me feel old John.
Would be nice to see the real world differences vs technical jargon
good point!
Leaving a like just for the first 5 seconds of this.
thanks!
Dude. I’ve been trying to find out how to direct power a micro servo. No one says it, some how a sensor ground never crossed my mind until I saw the four wires in your adapter.
Anyone know if this shv650 fits well into a vanquish phoenix. Seem some trimming jobs on other brands....
Installed the lp 500 and i don't notice a difference between a 2s and 3s lipo. I am running direct power with your jst adapter xt60 bridge plug. I have a hobbywing fusion 1800kv motor/esc. Is it possibly a setting on my esc limiting the power/voltage to the servo?. No where near as fast as your video shows.
I am wanting to order the green SHV500LP servo that comes with the JST adapter, but as you mentioned in this video, under High Power level is actually not a good idea, so should I not order it? Would I have problems with it under high power situations? Thanks!
It's only the 650 model that has issues, it pulls over twice the amperage
@@HolmesHobbies Thank you!
Did you guys hire a hobo as host ? wait ? is that John behind THAT THING ?
I have a ?? Do you need to put a power lead off your battery for direct power?
Most people solder it onto the esc's battery plug, or at the esc end of the battery plug lead. Not on the battery itself
DEEP DIVE video!😁
Hi im looking for a servo shv 800 for my trx high trail and a 3500 brushless like the one u put in your trx4 thing ripped 👍😁 can u help?🤔😥
John, something I'm confused about is why do you need a fast servo if you are low speed crawling?
It's not a must but makes it easier to shake the truck down off a ledge, getting the suspension to settle for example.
Cheers 👍
What about analog and digital servos. :-)
Now I’ve been wondering, with that wiring configuration typically ground is shared with the servo signal coming off the RX as well as the negative off the battery. So ground is a Y funneling into the servo. With signal wire only coming from the RX and hot wire only coming from the battery. I’m wiring my TF2 to run a separate battery for lighting on a class 0 rig. And I wanted to run my shv500 direct power off off the main but the winch I was hoping to power from the light battery. If I pull signal only from RX and two wire positive/negative off the secondary battery would that cause it to glitch like you had some servos do? I wouldn’t want to splice the negative from two separate batteries to feed this because that could go wrong as electrons try to return to source. So it’s either skip that, run a larger primary battery and power both servos off the main with a smaller battery to power the lights only and risk the servos essentially having a brown out if I use mixing or skip mixing and just keep it simple and use one at a time. What would you do?
I wrestled with this issue for a little bit before coming to the conclusion to just run everything off of one battery. If you wire it right it can be super simple and elegant and you only have to worry about one voltage source
@@rc7178 I did decide to do that on my TF2. So I ordered the Powershift deadman switch and their pelican light switch box so I can do that and control power draw of the lights, easily turn them off and make sure everything is de-energized as well when not running. Oh, also got their wielder volt meter so I can monitor cell voltage while driving and can work that into the theme. So deadman switch is the propane tank. A friend is printing me a generator and I’ll have the three connected so it’ll be like a ranch truck going around repairing fence. That’s my TF2 and the GSpeed V3 I’m building will be a flatbed ranch truck with a bale of hay and other things related in the back. TF2 has the 1080 and Crawlmaster while the V3 has the purple servo, purple motor and hoping to get the purple esc. Very excited, hoping to get a second purple servo when they release to go in the tf2 or a second build.
Losi LMT RTR comes with 23 tooth.
Grizzly Adam’s the servo tech wheres the bear ?
John Holmes
Thanks again John. If you send me your address can I send you a trailing arm for the Ryft? Seeing it broken is killing my ocd.
I would love to see you build a racing motion sim with giant servos and controller I would like to see how to make one my self please and thank you
🤘🍻🤘
If you want a good example of bad bump steer? get a Stampede, the chassis mounted servo has direct mount steering rods (similar to crawlers) and it's bump steer is atrocious
But besides that great video
John plz sell me one of the purples I need it to match in my pheonix with .y awesome crawlmaster.
Should talk about getting them in stock lol
How much power do I need ?
all of it
You mean you can't use the Force whether it's a Jedi force or the dark side.. this might explain the issues I'm experiencing LOL
Nut.
My soul? 😂😂😂😂😂
I love the info but can’t understand why you are hell bent on 4s or more for a crawler, just seems pointless, there has been nothing I couldn’t crawl on 2s I guess I’m just curious
so this is what the unibomber does when hes not blowing up people
The servo knows where it is because the servo knows where it isn't?
It's about darn time everyone bows down and succumbs to 25 tooth as standard!!! That was so annoying, for decades. I see you want to ruin your potentiometer in that radio slapping that wheel around like that. lmao
Please go too in-depth
