  • So you're moving up in the world of radio control and you've determined that you need a more powerful servo for your radio control vehicle. Dropping a new servo into your rig will certainly improve performance however you may not be getting optimum performance from that servo. You may need a BEC. So what is a BEC? Why do you need it? What we can tell you here is you are in the right spot. In this video John Holmes goes over everything you need to know about a BEC from what it stands for, to what it does and even serveral methods on how to wire it.

    Thank you John, both for providing the information and a product that basically negates the need for it lol. I love your servos because they help simplify and tidy up the wiring, on top of being super strong.

      Orion I had to watch it a few times to remember what a bec does lol. I never ended up using one. But Reefs makes some nice servos & some of them have crazy power. What else is done to your truck?? I’m just thinking with some of the parts being plastic you don’t want a really high torque servo. I’d try & stay in the middle on their servos. Something with decent speed & torque & yes I’d run a BEC because it’ll let you get the full potential out of the servo instead of just plugging it into the receiver box. Your receiver only runs on like 5.5 v /6v so if you run the servo @8.4 v right off the battery it’ll be faster & stronger.

    • @mikeburgessrc5360
      @mikeburgessrc5360 4 года назад

      Orion yeah definitely look into shit for sure. I’m so hesitant to buy Traxxas electronics. The specs on their servos aren’t that good for that kinda money & then you gotta worry about it shitting the bed. Yeah they’re warranty is great but then your without a truck.

    • @mikeburgessrc5360
      @mikeburgessrc5360 4 года назад +1

      I think for me if I didn’t see all the videos & hear about all their electronics having problems in almost every vehicle Traxxas has & me have 2 2075 servos that are 12 years old & still work fine & my 4tec is 2 months old & the servo in that died. I got my TRX4 too with all original servos but the truck is 2 years old & hasn’t even had 2 packs ran through it. Lol

    Good explanation, John! I'm still just trying to get going, in my return to the Hobby, on a Disabled Veteran's very meager "pay". I still only run 2S, and haven't experienced any brown outs on my Wraith's ESC (HOLMES BTW!!). Of course that doesn't mean that I never will... I'm running a 21g Servo (whatever the heck THAT means). Not sure of the in.lb. conversion.
    I KNOW that when I can finally afford a BEC, it won't be without your Bypass Adapter! Thank you for that.

    I dropped the throttle curve off to counter the over 50,000rpm.
    I'm pulling 2 hours run time on 850mah 6s 75c with sensational temps. ( needless to say I am running baby mode settings on the esc and I still have more power than ever needed 😆😆😆)
    Its a Big weight reduction running baby sized batterys 😎.
    I've never been as impressed with a brushless motor as I have been with the puller pro ..😀😀😀😀😀🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😎😎😎

      The import taxes from china are lower than the US (unfortunately), even if they don't export properly.

    I thankfully found a name brand servo that has nearly 450oz of torque at 6.0 volts. It is NOT however for those who drive their RC truck as would a submarine commander.

    Don't use such bypass adapters, it may cause issues. Get a simple Y-cable, with 2 female and 1 male connector. On the male connector that plugs in the reciever, remove the positive AND negative wires but leave the signal wire intact. Having the negative wire intact ( like on the bypass adapter shown in this video) may cause unwanted actions. On one of my trucks it caused the servo to turn full left when giving full throttle. This was caused by having the negative and signal wire plugged to the reciever.
    This wont happen to the majority of people and for me it only happened when I swapped the reciever for a newer one. But better safe than sorry.

      First time I've heard of this problem out of tens of thousands of bypass adapters. I have seen hundreds of floating ground issues that bypass adapters solved however. I would like to know more about the wiring, battery, and radio situation

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  3 года назад

      It is quite important to tie ground together on the RX, battery, BEC, and esc so that the signal is referenced properly and there is not a chance of ground loop.

      @@HolmesHobbies I was also surprised when this problem occured. The truck it happened on functioned perfect for over 15 years untill I swapped the reciever. As for the specs and wiring: A Hitec servo, I believe it's the HS-7955TG. connected to a CC BEC as shown in your video, a Tekin FXR ESC and a 3s lipo. Radio was a old LRP system when it worked fine, replaced with a Absima CR6P radio and Absima R6FS reciever. This is a rebranded Flysky system.
      The BEC is wired to the servo with a Y-cable, on which the + wire going in to the reciever was removed. the ESC feeds the reciever with power. Exactly like you show in the video. When I swapped to the new radio system, problem started. If I applied full throttle, the servo would fully turn to one side and the car wouldn't move. After some searching on the internet I came across some posts that suggested removing the ground wire as well. and voila, the problem was fixed.

    Wish you could make a video on how to wire a bec on a nitro car. Is it possible?

      most people use 2s or 3s pack for it?

    • @gmummy
      @gmummy 6 лет назад

      HolmesHobbies yes, planning on a 3s pack, but how is it wired since there is no esc?

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 лет назад

      just straight into the battery

    • @gmummy
      @gmummy 6 лет назад

      If I plug straight into the battery, 3s - 12+volts, the servo will fry as they are only 7.4. That's where the confusion is - On how to wire the bec to avoid the servo from overloading. On a nitro there is no esc.

      The battery goes into the BEC. The BEC goes into the radio and powers the RX and servo.

    Old post, I know. But,I think you should leave out the "ask a question in the comments and I'll get to it," malarkey. Pretty tough to answer everyone, so leave out the expectation. Lots of unanswered questions here, probably the same number of disappointed posters.

    Just cut the red wire on the esc. Done

  • @MrLew1965
    @MrLew1965 Год назад

    I never mess with the ESC / BEC Red wire ?? I just connect a 3" servo lead with the Red Wire disconnected to the original ESC lead and keep the originality of the ESC unit in tack ... This is for 2 reasons, first being Re-Sale value and secondly, disconnecting the Red Wire on some BEC's may effect the programmability of the ESC itself and/or the BEC itself. Not Good ! A 3" servo lead is $ 0.47 ...Lol
