Zuko's redemption arc is one of the best in fiction because it's realistic. It wasn't a straight path from bad to good, but more like a "three steps forward/two steps back" kinda situation. He needed to falter at the end of season two so that his final change of heart in mid season three felt all the more satisfying.
Exactly, people get so mad at Zuko in Ba Sing Se for going back in his ways, but relapse is such a real thing

A lot of people forget what his honor and return home meant. Azula flashed at him EVERYTHING he thought he wanted. Everything hes worked for since before we even met him.

Fun-facts (hopefully nobody has said it yet): Ming, the kind-hearted guard that helped out Iroh, is voiced by Serena Williams!!🎾

Honestly I'm surprised sokka never considered the possibly that the invasion was compromised at the book two finale. It's not like they didn't write down invasion plans in a war room
That was one of my few criticisms of this show. Because I was just waiting for the good guys to find out that the bad guys already knew about the invasion.

I will say I recognize that azula has been a victim to a degree but that doesn't excuse her for abusing and manipulating others. People hating her on a first watch is totally understandable

Uncle Iroh is like the quiet kid telling his best friend to not show up for school tomorrow. Also one of my favorite episodes.

41:53 I ADORE that you guys were so quick to caught up on WHY Katara specifically doesn't like him, the moment between them in the crystal cave was a big deal, but not many people put the weight it deserves on it.
If you remember, Unc Iroh said that the way to redirect lightning is to be at peace to allow the energy to flow through you. Meaning, Zuko confronting his dad was what he needed to do in order to be at peace with himself. It’s wild.
Ozai is a fucking menace that dude literally sensed the sun rising a little bit and still was able to do all that

The combustion man could have gotten the gang with the first blow but zuko kicked him making him to miss the target that's why aang thanked him, but sokka was actually the one that made him blow himself using the boomerang

On one hand, we're at the point where everything is going down. On the other, the show's almost over.
Also, remember the earth King? He's ultimately the reason the invasion failed. Him and his big mouth blabbed right to Azula while she was in disguise. And he got off scott free, traveling the world while literally abandoning his City. How you feel about Azula I feel about the Earth King
The generals already were planning it. You think the war room wouldn't have documents about the invasion plans? It's not like they had time to destroy evidence as the coup was instant. Honestly I'm surprised sokka didn't consider the possibly the plan was leaked after the book 2 finale. The king had no reason to suspect azula at the time because the avatar literally vouched for her as a trusted companion and ally.
Edit: azula was gonna find out about it one way or another especially with the earth kingdom secret Police in her pocket. That said he king should have mentioned leaking the plan that is on him but our team also should have considered the possibility the plan leaked.
The fact that they did an Avengers assemble, bringing everyone back for the invasion, only to have it go wrong is crazy

Remember when the Earth King told Azula disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior about the invasion plan? Thats why they were ready and cleared out. They never mention it again because our main characters never knew she found out about it.

Seeing zuko deflect ozais lightning was one of the series most satisfying moments.

The world building and power scaling in this show is so detailed and amazing. Full of things that you may not even consciously pick up on, but that help really deepen and sell you the world you're seeing.
Ozai bends lightning, UNDERGROUND, the millisecond a sliver of the sun is present. And he does it almost instantaneously. Even Iroh takes time to pick up the momentum needed to bend lightning. Ozai is a crazy powerful firebender.
I've seen people say "oh, but we don't know that Ozai's really a powerful bender, maybe he's just the ruler"
WTF, dude is dual-wielding lightning whips. Did they get up to get a snack during the episode or something?

Zuko's confrontation of Ozai is one of the most cathartic scenes in storytelling, IMHO. It was such a long build up, but every piece of what he said drew on all his experience during his banishment, encountering all the real people's lives being destroyed by the Fire Nation, and calling out perfectly all the twisted emotional abuse. Feeling his conviction in goodness finally is so earned. And then when Ozai gets him with the Mom card, Zuko pulls the Uno reverse lightening redirect! Just like Unc taught him. Incredible.
The whole first episode they talked about the "Avengers Assemble" moment. Unfortunately, they were watching Infinity War, not Endgame.
I appreciate very much that you understood the gaangs initial rejection of Zuko, many reactors are seemingly blind to all the shitty things he's done up to that point and somehow don't realize that they haven't seen his character arc as they've been off doing their own thing. Their interactions with Zuko have been limited to him doing shitty things to them in order to get Aang lol.

Technically the invasion was going to invade the second the Earth King opened his mouth. I know he didn't know it was the real Suki, but it's still his fault.

Dont forget guys, azula dressed up as a kyoshi warrior (after attacking suki) and the earth kikg talked about the invasion plan to them - that is how they knew !

Yeah. He wasn't eating nearly as well in s2 as he was in S1 since he and Iroh were on the run. Going by Zuko Alone he was starving for days on end at times. That'll really do a number on your bulk

As someone who commented about Azula's age... some of this commentary feel quite targeted (I'm joking, this is all in good fun and have your opinions). The only thing I will say about this episode is that it confirms Azula wasn't just being mean in the flashback that she told Zuko that their dad was going to kill him. As a child most likely under the age of 8, you could say that psychologically, she was informing Zuko for his own safety, but just in a very screwed up way because that's all she's been shown. Plus that whole flashback was from Zuko's perspective as well. But anyway, great reaction looking forward to the next one
Even told ursa what ozai said, which ursa did things to protect zuko.
As a kid it really felt like pre "on your left" when everyone showed up. As an adult, it still hits lol.

The creators of ATLA based the fire nation on Japan in many ways, but they also based it off of America, too. The classroom propaganda for example was based off of classroom propaganda here in the states. And Zuko's speech was really about America spreading it's dominance throughout the world, how American's were taught to view it as benevolence and greatness, and how the rest of the world sees us for what we are: a fascist empire that robs other nations of their resources.
You can also see a lot of Chinese and Thai influences too. These nations aren't just one representation.
The Earth Kingdom also is based on China but you have the Geishas and Japanese named people like the Kyoshi warriors
