- Episode 1 of 3 from the Dakar RallyTeam X-raid. A never before seen look of X-raid, the Dakar Winning International Cross-Country Rally Team. A shop tour of their facility outside of Frankfurt Germany, watch how the team builds and tests their fleet of MINI ALL4 Countrymans. Hosted by JF Musial
As someone who loves her MINI with all her heart, this is incredible and makes me insanely happy
MaryFrancis Benning when people tell me that I can't make my mini an off-road car I just show them this
250mm is 10" which isn't all that bad. I'm guessing thats like an inherent safety feature, keeping the driving from pushing to hard for days in a row. compared to something like trophy trucks with feet of travel nearly flying across similar terrain
Agreed! It is great to see something with relaxed smart people.
How do you get involved with this kind of reporting? Do you call them up and ask to sit in their car? Or do they give you a bunch of footage and you just report it?
Great video. I love these factory tours and the fact that you just let the experts speak. It is so educational. Only complaint is I could have used some subtitles. I had a hard time understanding the driver in the last few minutes of the video because of his accent and driving noise.
have you ever seen dakar? peterhansel has the record for both motorcycle and car
The driver of the ride-along is Spaniard Joan "Nani" Roma. He's from the countryside and he has raced a ton of French-organized raids during his career. Also, he used to have a French co-driver. I guess that makes for a funny English accent
The other driver is Stephane Peterhansel AKA "Monseiur Dakar". He is French
All X-raid cars have all those spare parts. You never know what will happen. If you get seriously damaged, the assistance truck may need up to 3h to get to you. You cannot loose that much time so you need to be able to repair it by yourself. Also, these cross-country raids are considered "adventure races" so you MUST have basic supplies to survive around 48h easily on your own
Wow.... I just learned so much about cross-country racing that i didn't originally know. mind.blown. How would someone get into this sort of racing? I can imagine skills from rally would transfer over with similar driving styles but it seems like that's just the tip of the iceberg with so many different terrains amongst everything else. It just seems like so much to learn.
It is not that similar... It is only the main sponsor, there are a ton of differences if you dig into it
The reference to the poor driving skill was because I hate people know a shitty driver but don't know the World rally champion or a 11-times Dakar rally winner
The cost of the events vary A LOT. Most European countries have National cross-country championships with 1-day and 2-day races. If you want to know more about car preparation, check the FIA cross-country rally rulebook for the T2 class (it's a bit like the Gr.N from rallying)
The 2 main drivers of X-raid are French Stephane Peterhansel (5-time Dakar rally winner in the bike class and like 3-4 more times with cars) and Spaniard Joan "Nani" Roma (once Dakar rally winner in the bike class). "Nani" is the driver when JF is sitting next to him
I agree km is the norm around the world, but its j.f. And he is from jersey I think. I also think the shows targeted towards Americans so why use it? the british use mphand the show is in english. He seems out of touch with the channels audience IMO. So i find it pretentious.
2WD cars are allowed to have a much longer suspension travel. It's like a balance: with AWD you get much better traction but with 2WD you can have better suspension and auto-inflatable tires
You're not allowed to do that within FIA cross-country rallies. Also, the Dakar rally has only been won 2 times with a 2WD buggy in recent times (Jean-Lois Schlesser twice with his self-built machines)
Why do Americans call anything that's goes off road a "truck"
From 8:27-8:51 JF said 'actually' 4 times. He then actually said it 8 more times in about 3 minutes (9:27, 9:34, 9:45, 9:55, 10:23, 10:35, 11:08, 11:31). Then I actually stopped watching.
Isn't that "too secret"?? I mean, it's almost like visiting a F1 factory. I hope they let you give some actual insight and not some tourist-like info :-)
Have you seen the Mini Countryman?? It's quite big, not Mini-ish at all. This car is just 5% bigger overall than a stock Mini Countryman
"This is your first time?" To multiple dakar champion😂😂😂
No no, Joan "Nani" Roma said he used the movement of the car (the inertia) to help the engine to make turns faster and more agile
Love mine, 2015 Cooper S All4. Fast, handles well because of the 4 wheel drive. Great fun, go cart handling, love it.
Most succesful team? They ve won just 2 dakars... Calling these cars "trucks"...Trucks(conceptually completely different) also compete in dakar, how do you call that?Really how do you differentiate?
Also 250mm of suspension stroke is not something "between thumb and index finger" its more like "wrist-elbow". BTW: WRC has more stroke:)
JF: "Does this simulate Dakar?" Nani: "Yes the car is the same." Cause of american pronunciation "THA CAR" Correct one would be sth like DAAAKAR (Sven at 2:50)
FIA mandates a minimum driving range of 800 km on the cars, to build in some margin of error. This Mini's fuel cell is "not quite" 400 L, which is at least good for that much, if not more.
Considering these things carry enough spare parts to just about build a second car, I don't expect this is some WRC featherweight (the Dakar Car class is anything up to 3500 kg). Between that and the conditions they drive in, that sounds like decent fuel consumption to me.
I'd like to raise, especially the german viewers attention on who Stefan Quandt, the team priciple actually is: He is heir of Günther Quandt, who saved BMW with nazi capital he "earned" with jewish labour in deadly conditions: Das Schweigen der Quandts .....in this documentary he is asked whether he would participate in paying the heirs of his fathers victims some compensation, he said he did not killed them, so he does not need to....funny, buit he takes the money-,-
not usually a fan of long factory walk throughs since the hosts are usually shit but this is very well done. Simply needs more work on the sound editing, at times the host is very loud, at times you can barely hear him....i know im picky but i just finished a 12 hour kitchen shift so any loud noises just irritate me (then why am i watching a video on race cars? because theyre fucking awesome)
Well practice makes perfect she ran the 100m @ 00:17:6 which means she is the fastest 6yr old On the planet for the 100m Dash I have video on RUclips take a look bring out your stop watch for your self and time her from home or the office it's under Fastest 6yr old on the planet practicing 100 m dash @ 00.17.6 CSUFRESNO thanks
If you use kilometers any British person will understand what you are talking about, Miles are only used on the roads as it would be a logistical nightmare to convert the entire road network, in all other applications, bar a few exceptions (e.g. height and weight of people) S.I. units are used.
In no way is this pretentious, the internet is global and so is youtube.
Love to do some CC-rally, the perfect combination of driving, technological, mental and physical challenge,.
Thinking of buying an old 4wd, probably a toyota (Hilux or Land Cruiser) for their reliability and doing some cheap conversions to get it ready. Anyone have any ideas how much the events cost to enter?
I'm not American. And iirc, he was talking about trucks as in pickup trucks. What do you call a Strakar or a Navara or a Hilux or any of those pickup trucks? They are trucks.
They are not Trucks in the whole trucker sense, but they are pickup trucks. In english there is no other qualifying word. In latin languages there is.
they dont even mention 110km/h or 110mph in the video (unless im so tired i forgot already) so thats clearly a reference to what the car can do (and does) on a cross country rally (110mph+ in unknown desert is quick as fuck)....they mention going 50mph on sand in the video but thats not even 100km/h so its irrelevant
Oh and another nitpick but a more major one, it would be good to go over the stats of the car at some point....is it 4x4 or awd? hp/tq? weight loaded/unloaded? dont even need to say them just a quick card flash on the screen or something (since i understand you have limited time etc.) just to save us the google :)
Keep up the good work!
I thought that xraid used a custom diesel engine, but finding out that they use the BMW 3L i6 is impressive as heck. I always knew BMW made the best diesels but now from "holy" they acended to "divine" in my eyes.
Yeah most of the teams use production engines. Xraid uses BMW engines, Toyota uses the TT V6 found in the land cruiser (some use Lexus V8s), Prodrive use Ford EcoBoosts etc.
to put it more clearly, 110km/h over sand isnt impressive at all, a fucking civic can do that all day, 110mph (long distance) is rally grade stuff, they simply put that in the title to show that the car does that on a regular basis, not that they did so in the video
Do they ever have to bring a gun through dodgy countries/territories as well or is it assumed that the locals won't rob the car for parts?
I know they moved Dakar to South America because Mali was infested with terrorists, so it's not purely theoretical to happen in the future.
Great video JF. Ive been a massive Dakar fan for years. Started with the Rothmans Porsche 959's and then I got n to the trucks. Check out a guy called Jan de Roy and his twin engined DAF 3600ATI Dakar raid truck. That thing passed me on a motorway in France doing about 110 mph!! It is a monster!
JF, you've turned into a full-fledged host. You often came across as a bit of an awkward duckling in the past. But now, not only are you seemingly more confident, you've become quite the likeable video personality.
I love these factory visits. Please keep it up!
Just because you seem to not understand metric measurements.
The maximum wheel base in Dakar is 2m90 which equates to 114.17 inches.
For your reference a Ford F150 6.5' Regular Cab has a wheel base of 125.9 inches or 3m19.
These are trucks and they are limited by what the regulations impose.
This is how I feel every time I start my R61. Love my Cooper.
so you are telling me that the design on the rear of the car at 11:44 is completely dissimilar to the motif that was on Block's car in Gymkhana 3? I'm referring to the dripping paint, not the entire livery. I didn't say anything about driver skill....
first comment, this was amazing. Had a cousin that did the Dakar races and ones in africa as well as the dunes in the middle east, and let me tell you, i doubted him, but once i drove one, i had to make a custom . Usually for recreational use
intro narration sounded a little off. i cant explain myself in english, but your voice had a little different pitch, and sometimes you "spat" into the microphone. but nothing to be concerned about ;)
yeah i know my point was that yes the title is misleading but not technically incorrect, like i said they probably simply meant the car is capable of that, not that they were going to do so in the video
Needed subtitles for the in car footage, I couldn't figure out much of what the driver was saying.
i'm not saying to race a trophy truck in dakar, just to take a ride in one. trophy truck is not buggy it has a differential on the rear, they have front or mid engines not rear engines.
i understand why you would think it MEANS that but its doesnt, the title is misleading yes, and they did not go 110km/h in this vid they said they went 50mph, thats 80khm; not 110kmh
Sven said that the shock absorvers have a 250mm travel tops. The question is, why do i feel that Roby Gordon's hummer have a shock absorver with a much longer travel?
If I remember correctly Americans make up for quite a bit under half of their viewership, just because they are from the USA doesn't mean they only have to care about us.
They are better than a ford raptor. To the people mentioning the raptor do you not understand the minis technology and performance compared to a stock ford "pre-runner"?
its taken down to correct the video or cut it or whatever it is, to make it better.
they would not make any notably more money on it, considering how fast they took it down.
I guess it helps to be a member of the BMW owner family to get those prototype engines for your rally team right Mr. Quandt :]
another great drive video, thanks!
its kind of annoying that the presenter always says "got it" all the time (I am not hating i like the content, i am just giving constructive criticism)
So... can anyone tell me how these are still Minis? i just see a big hatchback (almost MPV) that is pretty much the opposite of the whole mini idea :/
Thanks fellow Canadian, i figured there had to be some reason it wouldnt work as well since someone on the team must have thought about it at some point
Did I hear correctly - the fuel tank is 400 litres!? minimum range 600 km!? And they consider that to be good fuel consumption.... good grief...
Well done. No annoying "hardcore" music with cuts every half second and pointless blurring effects. Vids like this keep people coming back.
good reportage! these cars are amazing, people dont understand... i grew up watching masuoka in his pajero. but vatanen still the best
Why dont thex just build 2 extreme light cars instead of one heavy with many spare parts?
Are those thing really always getting damaged?
In the Dakar the Mini's race in the car category. The Dakar race trucks are much much larger. 10 tonne. Think MAN, Kamaz and Tatra.
YOU SHOULD RIDE IN A TROPHY TRUCK, 850 HORSE POWER, 30 INCHES OF SUSPENSION, 7000+RPM, 39 INCH TIRES TOP SPEED AROUND 130 MPH
Tires are too big, also the seat must be fixed for safety reasons. You will need to take out them if you put a tire under them.
Couldnt they have fit a tire underneath each seat? Seems like it would save space and lower the center of gravity a bunch....
In that section of the video, it's over a bump, not over sand dunes. It's probably a reference to the Dakar/Morocco/etc speeds.
I cant imagine how hard it is to handle that car for hundreds of kilometers a day for a week. Those guys are totally athletes.
Here in Chile we dont steal the parts. In Argentina has happened but so far it´s been secure for all the participants.
Unfortunately there is no more information for the suspension ):
drive should cover the dakar next reace, ( fi possible )
keep up the good work fellas i cant watch enough videos.
Ok. So you're saying that since 2009 he's driving under Baja rules? umhhhh right.... sorry but i dont understand...
youre obviously a troll but how is using kilometers pretentious? it is the standard around the world and it should be
Damn it J.F! You broke the video! I was watching.. then your voice comes on and it ends :( I blame you!! :(
What a stupid statement, being tall and strong has absolutely nothing to do with emotional integrity, only an equally stupid person would see reason in that. It is almost insulting that he would use an example as stupid as that to describe how gruelling the dakar is...
haha.. man.. that looks like fun..
HOW Does the Navigator keep from PUKING all over the place?!! HOW??
I can't see any differences. He is still calling those cars "trucks"...
I could watch the in car footage all day. Or at least until I got sick and then I'd resume watching..
this was a great, GREAT video. the ending question "how is he suppose to read" bit was pretty funny.
No Minis are cars. But these trucks that look like Minis are trucks.
Do a video about the Africa ECO RACE, which is the real Dakar... South america dakar isn't as hard as the real Dakar
Great job, looks like you had your glasses on your hair before though... Looks a little strange.
Well, the anwer is in the vid; a little less than 400 liters must be enough to do a min. of 800km.
he says 110k (110km/h) and the tittle says 110mph haah great facts!
Picard joyriding on ARGO has NOTHING on this.... just saying.
awesome :) they still deserve some criticism for the misleading title though thats for sure
Stephane Peterhansel is Mr Dakar. 11 times Dakar Champion between bikes and cars. From France
It's Krzysztof Hołowczyc's car, check this stuff presenting his skills
/watch?v=2HIJi3EgGAw
ehm, non per dire, ma la Mini X-Raid corre le maratone africane e la Dakar... detto questo, chi ti dice che non facciano beneficenza?
You Forget to Mansion
Pharaons Rally
that's a Fatal Mistake
So ridiculous that f1 drivers considered the best instead of dakar
How did you get the overhead shots, theres no way drive has the money to rent a heli.
typically the more experienced person reads pace notes, and reads the gps coordinates.
Did he say Poland after Portugal at 2:20 (isch) ?
What CC rally goes on in Poland?
Wish they would let full blown Trophy trucks with no restrictions. run the Dakar
Outside of the US a truck is a heavy goods vehicle, i.e. gross weight >7.5 tonnes.
its called correcting your video for your viewers sake. i for one appreciate it
JF, thanks for the show. Millions of dollars was invested into this program.
don´t say no one can go all out 6h nonstop dude ...
Wonder if these guys ever envy trophy truck drivers.
This guys run in my country!! but we don´t appreciate them as we should
8:15 Love that song... very good music selection
wow i would watch that and thanks for answering my comment yourself :)
"How the hell are you supposed to read your notes!!!???" HAHAHAHA!!!!
