I've followed the Dakar Rally now for years, but I lost interest in the cars back in the 90's.However for me its the trucks that make it enjoyable. Watching these huge vehicles hammering across the desert is just way more spectacular than the cars or bikes.
Absolutely, and not that it matters to you or anyone else, nor should it, I 100% agree! Why I find it so amazing, I do not know but it is really something to behold. it seems bigger the vehicle the smaller the effort is traversing the unforgiving landscape. And talk about the speed at which these great race machines compete, for a truck, put, many of the cars to shame I am sure. (O.k., not entirely sure of the car comment but my imagination races when it comes to these trucks!)
It's worth mentioning that their are three classes of trucks, there are service trucks that race (Class T4.3) like the smaller one shown here, production trucks that have little modification (few enter in this class but they race as T4.1), but the true beasts are the actually race trucks that run under the modified class, T4.2. They are full on racers and don't stop to support other competitors. instead of being run by car or bike manufactures and teams, they are run by the truck manufactures, like Kamaz, Hino, and MAN, and they are absolute monsters. These things are so crazy that they had to put restrictions on their speeds (140 km/h, 87 mph) because the minimum weight to get into the class is 3500kg (7716 lb) and with over 1000hp some of these things were pushing speeds approaching 200 km/h (125 mph), making them very dangerous not only to the crew but to the other teams around them. Imaging being on a bike and a 5 ton truck blows past you doing over 100 mph. To give you an idea on the levels these things can get to, the Kamaz truck for the 2020 season (note they have won 16 of the last 20 years, including the last 4 years straight) weights 19,000 pounds and puts out 1,150 hp with an ungodly amount of torque (over 3,000 ft-lbs, over 4,000 Nm).
In 2006 I was in Barcelona and I saw parked near the waterfront one of the Race Trucks from the Dakar. It was just by itself and it was pretty interesting to look it over and under.
we want someone like Chris or Leo. You know, guys who are passionate, well informed and entertaining. And who can speak fluently without "ummm" every 5 seconds.
I'm no mechanic, I can hardly tell a nut from a bolt, but if I had to go on a Dakar rally one of these truck would be way more appealing to me than a car competitor. The get stuff going again concept is way more awesome than just going fast. Just like logistics is way more interesting than combat.
Am I the only one who loved this video and found it very nice, but it was too short and then you get that feeling that there is something missing?? Thumbs up if so! thnks btw awesome vid
Absolutely love these videos. These are the kinds of things you always wonder. The things no one else talks about, what goes on behind the scenes. Love these vids, keepem comin!
Give us a 30 main episode of this! We wants more!! There are countless shows and vids of cars being driven quickly. But stuff like this so rarely gets made & shown, that we all want more!
The Paris-Dakar is one of the longest races in the world and we get one of the shortest videos covering it? Longer videos please, as always great work!
Wow - incredible setup. I'm amazed about the level of preparedness that they have, but at some level, not surprised. Thanks for the videos - keep up the good work!
The truck catagories changed for the Dakar series in south America. Camion / truck teams used to have 3 x types of trucks, race trucks, chase trucks and service trucks. Previously all trucks drove the same course and the race trucks and chase trucks were all part of the race. The chase truck was fast service support for the race trucks, the service trucks also had competitors numbers but didn't really compete. In South America the service trucks do not follw the same route as the race trucks and stay more on tarmac road and hard stone road, hence they use road tyres.
It seems like this video was improvised and/or made on the spot, once they saw these amazing trucks on the lot. Obviously, the trip was focused on filming the Mini rally cars. So, to the people complaining about the brevity of this video, just stop complaining for once and appreciate.
Thanks for this coverage. The guys/gals behind the scenes deserve some coverage for all the effort. BTW about J.F.'s presentation I feel he did a fine job, if I want a polished glossed over presenter I will listen to a politician.
Excellent.. except for ... too short, the mirrors are part of the suspension and why would the truck mechanics be fixing the truck.. and not the mini they had stopped to help? Looking forward to episode 3.
It's more of how much time the team is willing to give them I think, /DRIVE are usually more than happy to make 15 min mini documentaries on these kinda things. Still 5 mins is more than none :)
I love rally machines, but I find the trucks the most interesting. Kinda wish there was some more info detail about them though. I don't think the trucks really get covered much.
for the people bashing J.F., what do you prefer: a presenter that loves what he does, but isn't a perfect speaker, or a robot without soul that reproduces a script flawlessly?
JF I thought you did a great job on this episode, I too would have liked to see more, could you clarify the organizational system they used? you said that the blue bins were for suspension yet I saw bins labeled "mirror" and "clutch" and what not?
It would have been so great to have a closer look onto the engine of such a race truck. Wonder whether it is a straight 6 or a V8... what size of turbos they use etc etc etc.!
Wow people this is my last comment about this, but let me just say that J.F. puts a lot of work into organizing and filming all of this, and he's one of the reasons why there is so much interesting behind the scenes videos of these car companies and racing teams. If you want scripted mainstream BS and tacticool editing with presenters reading off of scripts, then go watch Top Gear....
"So the blue is anything that has to do with suspension or brakes" ---mirrors--- Dang, what kinda crazy technology is going on in these cars suspension systems? :p
Don't just assume they had more time to make a longer video, everything has time constraints in the rally. Also their could have been a lot of footage to edit for other programs on drive. What you are seeing here takes a hell of alot longer to film and edit than it took to watch, remember that.
All teams have service trucks. These service trucks are not racing, and they are in T5 category. The longer truck in the clip is a T5 truck. Trucks that do race are in T4 category. T4 trucks are allowed to help small cars in the stage. Those dedicated truck racers carry only their own supply. You are right, it's costly, not every team has it. But it is better to have a service racer than taking all the trouble join the race and go home with a DNF.
They make money per video, not per minute. I like Drive. I want it to stick around. So, although I love their long-form content, I'm happy watching shorter videos if it means they'll be able to make even more content over time.
Tomorrow the Dakar goes to heaven, first time in the history the Dakar runs in the sky. World be ready what is next you never will forget it. Uyuni-Bolivia the sky on earth

MY GO KART CAN OUT RUN THAT PILE OF HORSE SHIT
Why haven't we had a Top Gear episode to do with this? It's already three men to a truck, it's perfect!
I really like the whole concept of mechanic trucks being a competitor in the actual race.
It's worth mentioning that their are three classes of trucks, there are service trucks that race (Class T4.3) like the smaller one shown here, production trucks that have little modification (few enter in this class but they race as T4.1), but the true beasts are the actually race trucks that run under the modified class, T4.2. Dakar Rally-since 2013 it is my purpose to be a part of service crew. One day I'll reach it...There's nothing more demanding than this rally...
JF was very professional and smooth with his body language in this video. Getting better and more enjoyable to watch, keep it up!
although JF isn't the most entertaining person at drive he does bring some very insightful information to the viewers and i commend him on the mark.
I'm no mechanic, I can hardly tell a nut from a bolt, but if I had to go on a Dakar rally one of these truck would be way more appealing to me than a car competitor.
The get stuff going again concept is way more awesome than just going fast.
Just like logistics is way more interesting than combat.
Definitely! As a life long Dakar fan I'd love at least a 10-20min rundown of the behind the scenes stuff like this!
Am I the only one who loved this video and found it very nice, but it was too short and then you get that feeling that there is something missing?? Thumbs up if so! thnks btw awesome vid

JF. Great Producer. Grating as a Presenter.
The Paris-Dakar is one of the longest races in the world and we get one of the shortest videos covering it? Longer videos please, as always great work!
"well if ur welding something, its pretty much game over" LMFAO
Wow - incredible setup. I'm amazed about the level of preparedness that they have, but at some level, not surprised. Thanks for the videos - keep up the good work!
I really liked that jack on the floor. Looks like they attached bigger wheels to get it through rougher terrain.
More Dakar and MORE BIG TRUCKS, please. Thank you.
The truck catagories changed for the Dakar series in south America. Camion / truck teams used to have 3 x types of trucks, race trucks, chase trucks and service trucks. JF is actually getting better!
Thank You J.F. !
I din't know about this. Thanks to drive we really learn something while enjoying to look at things we love/enjoy.
I think he's doing pretty well, he shows interest and speaks quite clearly
longer i could watch videos about this stuff for hours
It seems like this video was improvised and/or made on the spot, once they saw these amazing trucks on the lot. Obviously, the trip was focused on filming the Mini rally cars. So, to the people complaining about the brevity of this video, just stop complaining for once and appreciate.
Awesome stuff JF! Drive going after the last real adventures in motorsports, I love it!!
Man, that intro song has me riddled with goosepimples. Amazing stuff
JF, too short. youtube can never have too much content. please dump as much as possible. we nerds will love it.
I like these new videos Musial has done!
That's cool. I'd love to have seen the racing trucks in action, though.
WOW, What positive energy that exudes from you. You'll go far.
Must be such a fun event even for the mechanics. Hard, but fun.
I like odd videos like these. A deep look into something many people don't pay attention to. Keep these up!
Pleeease make a longer video of this! It was so intriguing but it was just a tease.
Woah that is so cool! I had no idea how much went into a race like that.
Thanks for this coverage. The guys/gals behind the scenes deserve some coverage for all the effort.
BTW about J.F.'s presentation I feel he did a fine job, if I want a polished glossed over presenter I will listen to a politician.
We all love those Dakar trucks but nobody knew what the fuck they were up to. Now we have an idea, thanks JF for explaining. Really inspiring episode
Awesome video, I love to see the crew side of things being a team member myself
Awesome episode JF
That was it I wanted to see trucks racing legitimately
Excellent.. except for ... too short, the mirrors are part of the suspension and why would the truck mechanics be fixing the truck.. and not the mini they had stopped to help? Looking forward to episode 3.
I agree, but I still think they could have shown some footage of the trucks competing, and more in-depth about the building of a truck.
It's more of how much time the team is willing to give them I think, /DRIVE are usually more than happy to make 15 min mini documentaries on these kinda things. Still 5 mins is more than none :)
Short episode! It would have been cool to see more in depth about the race and support trucks.
Three very nice MAN TGX Euro 5's there super video all about the trucks!
really wanted to see more of this!
Epic episode! Would like to see a longer version, this was waaay to short
J.F. Do not listen to anything anyone else wrote! You are a great presenter. :)
I love rally machines, but I find the trucks the most interesting. Kinda wish there was some more info detail about them though. I don't think the trucks really get covered much.
He is producing like half of the videos you see here. He is Drive.
for the people bashing J.F., what do you prefer: a presenter that loves what he does, but isn't a perfect speaker, or a robot without soul that reproduces a script flawlessly?
I want a part 2 and 3 on these trucks!
Thanks for the video, never knew about these, very informative.
JF I thought you did a great job on this episode, I too would have liked to see more, could you clarify the organizational system they used? you said that the blue bins were for suspension yet I saw bins labeled "mirror" and "clutch" and what not?
Good video. I wanted to see the race truck being driven
It would have been so great to have a closer look onto the engine of such a race truck. Wonder whether it is a straight 6 or a V8... what size of turbos they use etc etc etc.!
we want more. MOAR!
I'd really like to see more of this. Thank you.
I would love to drive a race truck for work delivering things. Taking shortcuts in rural areas going off-road especially in deserts, lol.
Would love to here from the technicians that ride along in that beast!
"So the blue is anything that has to do with suspension or brakes" ---mirrors--- Dang, what kinda crazy technology is going on in these cars suspension systems? :p
lol guys it's call /DRIVEN because that is just the name of the series, they are just explaining everything.
T4 rally trucks are so awesome.
Driven. Actually, not driven. Cool rigs, tho. Trucks are what have always made Dakar more wacky and fun. Roll on Tatra and Kamaz.
Don't just assume they had more time to make a longer video, everything has time constraints in the rally. Also their could have been a lot of footage to edit for other programs on drive. What you are seeing here takes a hell of alot longer to film and edit than it took to watch, remember that.
JF is there any way to apply for a job in those teams and garages? I'd be soo committed employee!
maybe i should watch this 4 times to spend enough time to justify the computer startup...
too short indeed. i'd like to see a little more. as everyone else seems to want as well.
Well, at least he knows what he is talking about, it's a nice departure from well-spoken presenters reading from a script.
nice but really short, more pls!
Camping in a tent for two weeks?? Amazing!
Tomorrow we watch Chris Harris do a comparison between the race truck and a Merc G wagon AMG. Which drifts best while driving through 3 feet of sand?
All teams have service trucks. These service trucks are not racing, and they are in T5 category. The longer truck in the clip is a T5 truck.
Trucks that do race are in T4 category. T4 trucks are allowed to help small cars in the stage. Those dedicated truck racers carry only their own supply.
You are right, it's costly, not every team has it. But it is better to have a service racer than taking all the trouble join the race and go home with a DNF.
Very intresting ! I didn't know those things !! cool !
Teach me more !! lol
would love to see more on the Dakar
Take your hand out of your pocket!
MAN... a proper Dakar truck. But KAMAZ is KAMAZ.
I remember the Kamaz trucks in the Paris-Dakar overtaking virtually everything, russian stile hahaha....
Great video!!!
I reaaaaallllyy want to learn more about the specifications of the race trucks. Power, top speed, engine modifications, are the tires special?
Deepest shit I heard today. It's 1:22am so theirs plenty of time to be dethroned.
Cool info, but I was hoping to see some action videos of the trucks!
They make money per video, not per minute. I like Drive. I want it to stick around. So, although I love their long-form content, I'm happy watching shorter videos if it means they'll be able to make even more content over time.
MOAR!
I first learned about these trucks in grand theft auto sanandreas
Tomorrow the Dakar goes to heaven, first time in the history the Dakar runs in the sky. World be ready what is next you never will forget it. Uyuni-Bolivia the sky on earth
I want more truck on sand action.
Then he beter hire a host who can do his creative genius justice.
it looks like you're drunk too... remember, kids, don't drink too much
I'm pretty sure the first truck has a welder on it..
Great video!
cant wait for Chris Harris tomorrow :D
I need one of those truck park outside my house
i totally agree with you...omly trucks....specially kamaz
i love the info, but i wanted to see some footage too! like in the mini video
Good video, but I didn't see any driving on /driven
No kids, drink till your liver explodes.
More more more MORE MOREEE!
