I was already suffering from extreme anxiety at the time, but I didn’t develop insomnia until I read “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker. It’s basically just a huge book about why you’re screwed if you don’t sleep.

Thank you Daniel, as usual you are so encouraging. Having followed many of your videos and read your book Set it, Forget it, I just want to thank you again for such sound advice and helping counteract all the scary stories of what poor sleep can do to your health. I am now much less fearful when I have a night when I don’t sleep at all and overall less worried about insomnia. Definitely feel more optimistic which I hope will mean I sleep better in future. Very best wishes to you.

Do you make a distinction between cognitive and health impairments due to something like insomnia and more long term sleep issues like sleep apnea? The info is great in this video, and yes you are bombarded with this when you investigate the negative effects of sleep…cognitive decline including schizophrenia, heart and cardiovascular issues etc. I got diagnosed with severe apnea and the fatigue and brain fog/focus loss has been crushing (on my personal and professional life). My blood pressure is increased (I got prescribed beta blockers). I have a therapist and I talk with him about the effects of sleep apnea and he has said a few times that he detects no neurosis around this issue (I openly question if depressive tendencies exacerbate the problem). So, yeah I’m wondering if apnea and insomnia are to be treated as having entirely shortage effects of the mind and body. I’m currently dealing with both so I’m interested to know what you think (or if you have a video to link to). Great info though, you’ve definitely helped in me approaching my issues with a different mindset.

Hi Daniel I was reading a post on reddit about Matthew Walker it said "Listen to Joe Rogan’s #1109 episode with Matthew Walker, a sleep scientist. From his perspective, and the literature’s, it is EXTREMELY detrimental, especially for athletes, to get anything less than SEVEN hours a night." apparantly he also wrote a book called "Why We Sleep" not sure if you have heard anything about this or what your thoughts are on it

Hi! So sorry you came across this. But know that his book has been debunked:
      guzey.com/books/why-we-sleep/
I’ve done my part as well by writing the book “Why we don’t sleep”. Nothing there.
