I think perhaps he perpetuates the fear mongering as a way to possibly draw more attention to his resources, books, masterclass etc. Drumming up 'business'. Just a thought. Personally, I appreciate your approach so much in that you are sensitive to those of us who have real trauma around insomnia and how much more in tune we are with the possible 'harm' we interpret from it and the fear/anxiety we experience. Thank you for all you do! :-)

You know, I think all of us humans respond to incentives. And when we are massively incentivized… we can easily fall into the habit of keep doing what is rewarded… thanks for sharing and for the support 😊

I listened to most of that interview because a friend sent it to me and I wanted to hear what he had to say. I personally hated most of it, so much fear mongering to me (to my still sensitive ears…alcohol bad, marijuana bad, pills bad, sugar bad, lack of sleep….DEATH!!) If I was new to this world and not recovered, I would have gone into panic mode after that interview. And sadly so many people have watched it! The wellness industry is whacked and making people even more unwell! I should know, I’ve been there! Thank goodness I know better now! Thankful to you & Martin Reed for helping so many with the real truths about insomnia.

I think you echo exactly how must of us here feel. There are some real issues in wellness/academia/media when it comes to sleep. But together I believe we can make a difference!

If I were interviewing Matthew Walker, my reply to his answers would be:
"At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." (from Billy Madison).

Great informative video as usual Daniel. I know for certain that few normal people i’ve spoken to over the years with minor sleeping issues (like 99% of the population) after having read Matt Walkers book have developed deeper more serious sleeping disorders. He’s the “world expert on sleep” and I believe he will be, but from causing more and more people to develop sleeping disorders.

Glad you have reacted to Matt walkers comments. I was silly enough to fall into the trap of taking his comments seriously. I can’t make my mind up when it comes to matt walker, hes either got an alterier motive (to sell something, potentially his books), or he’s not as intelligent as he thinks he is. It seems to me he conveniently leaves out many crucial facts when it comes to sleep, just to get his point across that lack of sleep is damaging. Why he feels the need to do this I don’t know. Thanks for shedding some light on this.

Anytime Jake! And I feel the exact same way… you know I heard this saying “Nobody is as blind as the person who doesn’t want to see”, sometimes I think it’s like this… we kinda deep down know the truth, but because it seems not in our interest… we don’t see it fully

I feel the same Benjamin, now is it in an honest attempt to use fear to make us sleep better because he believes this is so important… or does he know there’s something off but it’s been so rewarding to keep scaring people… I don’t know

Matthew Walker is stating that if we don't sleep then we will experience all sorts of negative effects ...
However, I absolutely refuse to believe that our ancestors achieved the perfect 8-hour sleep, every single night, for their whole entire lifespan. It is just not realistic in any way shape or form. It is almost like he is expecting sleep to be a constant in this chaotic world; basic probability would suggest it is impossible, and the universe doesn't revolve around our sleep needs anyways.
And on top of everything, Matthew Walker doesn't even offer any tips or solutions, and his advice on insomnia was very generic. In fact, I was even surprised he knew about CBT-i.
His claims are also outlandish: "We are the only species that deprive ourselves of sleep deliberately." There is no evidence to back up his statements, and I am certain he hasn't observed the millions-billions of species that exist on our planet.
"Mother nature hasn't learnt how to deal with sleep deprivation" - this statement doesn't even make any sense lol.
Honestly, I don't think he knows what he is talking about, and he comes across as very disingenuous. I would avoid listening to him at all costs.

daniel i’m curious , when you have something to do that’s important the next day. do you worry if you can’t sleep the night before? or how do you take it?

      Hi Jojo!
Absolutely, especially getting up at like 4 am for an international flight. I’ll have all this hyper sleep and be nervous all night. I think what helps is just thinking of it as normal 😊

BO, I know I’m biased… but sometimes we have a gut feeling that says something is off… I think maybe he got into this position where he saw the massive rewards of a scary message… I share your feelings

I believe that he is correct-insomnia is often a sleep drive problem, not so much anxiety or fear.

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192

I think the difference between being awake and insomnia is fear. If we aren’t scared of being awake… then we are just awake!

@Dominic Di Staulo being up all night is a source of great stress for me because I’m an athlete. If I don’t sleep, I don’t grow. Simple as that.

If insomnia were simply just a sleep drive problem and not based on fear, we would not be on this channel and this channel would not exist. We’re fearful that we haven’t slept, so anxiety is heightened and sleep doesn’t happen. The fact that you’re even asking about sleep drive shows that you may be scared that it’s what’s causing you not to sleep which is in fact, fear around sleep. If it were only about that, most of us wouldn’t care if we slept or not. It is all about the FEAR of wakefulness aka not sleeping.
