I'm glad the attendant knows you and greets you well! Hope you get some good use out of the e-bike. And sweet loving Bella, hope she enjoys her friends!
I had this issue in the past as well.. I ran the heater core full blast while drive uphill and downhill... It took about 10 minutes of driving at highway speeds
I'm sure you'll figure it out. Timing might be out just a bit. I assume you set it with the vacuum advance disconnected and vacuum line plugged off. Good luck!
Hey Dave, this is Jim I just wanted to let you know I used to have a motorhome like that same engine and it had two tabs for the timing light and when you use the bottom tab, make sure you hook the wire up to the number five cylinder otherwise you’ll be way off on your timing Good luck.
You certainly will figure out what is going on with the old girl. As an old friend use to say to me breathe in pink and blow out blue. Check out the weather in Pennsylvania and smile!
LoL I was laughing at you and yelling at my screen when you put in the new thermostat because you were saying you weren't going to do it when you started that video Dave but you'll get it figured out that's the one thing you changed from your trip West
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you have obviously not owned a new RV.. I travel a lot in my 1996 Tiffin Allegro Bus class A motorhome and have stopped and helped many with new RV's that are broke down on the side of the road. RV's are built like crap now days i will keep my old RV ..
@@frankavery8306 Lol yeah, I am sure your 28 yr old RV is perfect and never breaks down. Even better when pulled from being abandoned in a storage lot for years, adding house batteries and hitting the road to Arizona.
Pull a spark plug to see if it’s running lean, Dry Hershey chocolate brown is good color. If Fuel ratio ok, might want to put old thermostat back in to see how it acts. Like others have said burp cooling system, make sure no air trapped. Maybe a timing issue because of all the vacuum pieces you eliminated. Dash pot (silver vacuum pot where vacuum line attaches) on distributor may be adjustable. Good luck ! I’m sure there will be plenty of help heading your way!
quit second guessing yourself, your a good mechanic and you know it. Ive watched you for about 3 to 4 yrs now and you got this Dave. My whole family are mechanics and its a guessing game alot of the time. The new vehicles are a pain in the butt, but old school is what works the best.
It could be timing or the thermostat sticking or possibly one of your hose clamps is loose and you've lost a little bit of coolant and so you don't have enough coolant circulating around and that could make it run warmer too
I have a V10 but still learning the basics from you! Wish I could travel with you if only to learn about my own. I'm so fearful of being taken advantage of. I'd be dead in the water with no oars. In my cabin in NY freezing. Had to spend my reserve for tow and repair supporting my son who found out he had colon cancer. Wish you well. Living vicariously through you this year.
When I use to work on things, I started with the easy things and got into the hard. But went out and bought a used 2021 Ford Ranger can't work on that one. But love the truck its fun to drive. Back into my second childhood. But come on Dave you know how to work on things, stop second guessing yourself and just do it. Take care too. :)
Glad you made it without a breakdown! You will get it sorted out and running great! Your viewers have given some good tips! You are getting popular! LOL Bella is ready to get out and stretch her legs! LOL She love to ride in the RV but she likes to socialize too! HUGS~Donna
Hi Dave Bella dog thanks for the ride, you will work it out an get it running right ,I really enjoyed the ride today its nice travelling along when it’s cool out side an warm in the RV nice, you no it sort of looks like Australia where you were travelling along around south Australia up to Alice springs right up the middle, anyhow Dave, Bella dog merry Xmas if we do see you before take care guys cheers 🇦🇺🇺🇸🚌🐕🌲👌👍✌️🏴☠️ps Hi Dave from oz ha,ha,ha
The old girl is testing your commitment level, will you keep her even if she grumbles a little🤣😂. You’ve got lots of good info I the comments and between you and Scotty you’ll figure it out. Good luck, stay safe and well, have a Happy Christmas with your friends.🎄🙋🏼♀️🥰
I think I remember you rewiring your electric fans and the temperature switch for that. Make sure you have no loose connections on the electric fan and consider that temperature switch may also be your culprit.
was the old thermostat a lower temp? or maybe a little air in the system.. My 454 runs 200 to 210..with a 195 thermostat .Have a great trip Dave give Bella hugs..I would also look at putting an HEI distributor on that 454 better and hotter spark than points.. Just my 2 cents worth love the videos you will get it sorted out...
Was that a 180 thermostat? or a 170? I use the 180 in my Chevy G30 350 RV. Glad you made it. Been at that LTVA in 2019 for 2 weeks I had to put in a new rotor cap and wires and it ran fine after that. Later Dave
As you were discussing rv running warmer then normal my first thought fell upon the thermostat you just changed out. I continued watching and you finally hit upon it as well. Possibly the newer thermostat is not fully opening. For an older gal I’ve learned quite a bit from your mechanical tidbits. I’ll finish watching video to learn final diagnosis.👩🔧
Not related to the temp problem, but check the vacuum advance. Using the timing light see if the timing changes when you rev it up. Also check which vacuum port it's plugged into.
Now Dave you know I can't hear when someone records while driving . You also know that when your talking about could it be this , or could it be that , i'm gonna want to put my 2 cents in . I'm beginning to think you don't want my 2 cents ! LOL You made it there , and you'll figure it out 👍👍 . Have a great meet-up.
I was wondering when you installed your thermostat. You didn't say anything or look like you cared the direction your thermostat was facing..have to have the notch set toward the radiator. If you know what i mean. I have improperly set a thermostat in and it jammed open because of it. Just a thought.
You may want to consider taking temperature readings of the radiator with a digital thermometer after a long drive, I am wondering if your radiator has some sections that are blocked or partially blocked,
If it's harder to start, would definitely advance timing just a little, if it has points recheck first & maybe put a dwell meter on it before adjusting timing. I used to be a tune up tech back in the day, lol. Also if reinstalling the old thermostat doesn't help you might try Flushing the cooling system w super flush check the upper & lower radiator hoses w a digital thermometer for radiator efficiency & or new radiator.
No points on those years it's one of those GM HEI ignitions. Overheating probably coolant system someone put a flex fan on it those are junk. AC delco fan clutch is $160 from autozone someone didn't want to pay so they threw w flex fan on there cost $30.
Check stat opening temp , that you have the correct radiator cap poundage , water/antifreeze ratio . You know that a degree or two timing can have an effect on motor temps . Stay safe , have a great Christmas , give Bella an extra rub .
Use timing light and disconnect vacuum line to distributor before you set the timing.. I think you are having a distributor problem.Does it have a rotor or module? Electronic ignition ?/ If timing is erratic check distributor shaft for wobble or play.
I'm glad some people have some ideas. I'm am not qualified to give an opinion. Just a wish that it all gets straightened out soon, for not much money, and stays fixed.
Good to see you up and rolling. There's an old dirt racer trick to setting timing with an automatic transmission, but it takes 2 people and it's a bit violent. Set Ebrake, shift to D or low gear. lock the brakes, then stand on the gas. Advance distributor until it pings, then back it off until it stops. That'll give you all it has, regardless of the degrees of timing. Check the fan clutch. They tend to give up if the rig has set awhile.
Having auto problem really sucks it's just on your mind tell you get it fixed good luck thermostats have been the cause of my heat problems get the oem from dealer it can make the difference
I had the same problem years ago. My pickup would get a little warm on the gauge. So I talked to the mechanic about it. I had changed the t-state after 90,000 miles. Did a radiator flush and new hoses. Mechanic said nothing was wrong. Ended up blowing my head gasket. NOT ALL T-STATS open at the right temp. This was a dealer part.Comparing the original and the "new" t-stat ,the original had a small weep hole. The new one didn't ! I put the new one back in with this modification. No trouble after that.
Maybe air in the cooling system? Really leaning towards a slow / flaky thermostat. Maybe some goop shook loose when you worked on the cooling system. Maybe one of the hoses is weak and squeezing off the flow? Although that might not be intermittent. I'll stop guessing now. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Sometimes it's good to be recognized. Fun to see in the videos.
Slow starter and overheating with you adjusting the timing means you are probably to far advanced. The Murray thermostats are pretty reliable and with it being 10 degrees cooler than the old one, definitely points back to the timing to far advanced.
Hose partially collapsing underload, sticking thermostat, loss of some coolant, timing. Didn't you install some sort of a valve in line on a heater hose? That may be causing restriction.
This is a not probably your Temp problem, but I would replace the fuel filter. Gasoline goes bad after a couple months, and those old motorhomes may have had gasoline sitting in the tank for months or years, turning to lacquer.
Removing all that emission control crap probably had an effect on the vacuum advance. You may not be able to use the base timing. Set it where you believe it works best.
You can get an advance curve kit and see if that will get your timing where you want it. It'll come with, if I remember correctly, 3 sets of weights and 2 sets of springs. You just have to play around with it until you get the performance you want. Search GM HEI ignition advance curve kit. They're not expensive.
Your over heating might be a transmission heat issue. Your radiator also cools the transmission or is in front of the engine radiator if a separate one therefore adding its heat. Now do I change tranny filter and oil to my possibilities?
Hi Dave.. Although none of this might help, you asked.. Re heat.. -You could pull the thermostat and put it in a pot of water on the stove with a thermometer & check it.. -Could you have put the thermostat in backwards? -Better yet, just put the old one back in.. -Don't know what altitude your at, but just as some carbs need re-jetting, the cooling system also has to work harder at higher altitudes.. not only is the correct fan required, the lack of a fan shroud will put the system at a disadvantage.. Re timing.. -Could you have a vacuum leak? not getting the proper vacuum advance? Some folks will blow a bit of unlit propane over the motor to find a vacuum leak.. I've done it, but a little leery while doing it.. The mixture goes too rich / motor stumbles / when you come across the leak. Anyhow, like I said, probably not very helpful.. Good luck, Dennis
Just a thought but sounds like a vacuum line, have you looked at your vacuum advance on the distributor…? When you pulled all that stuff off you might not be getting proper vacuum….?
I'm glad the attendant knows you and greets you well! Hope you get some good use out of the e-bike. And sweet loving Bella, hope she enjoys her friends!
You might have a pocket of air in your cooling system. It will go up and down as that air bubble moves around.
You beat me to it. I concur!
I had this issue in the past as well.. I ran the heater core full blast while drive uphill and downhill... It took about 10 minutes of driving at highway speeds
Hey Dave, The coachman is sure are lucky to have you as an owner! i’m sure you’ll work it all out! hope you have a great stay at Quartzside!
Didn't you say when tuning up that there was a 10 degree difference in the old part and the new part ?
See everyone spots you from anywhere, Dave. You're just a cool dude is all :) Am glad you and Bella made it to your next destination safely.
I'm sure you'll figure it out. Timing might be out just a bit. I assume you set it with the vacuum advance disconnected and vacuum line plugged off. Good luck!

I really hope Santa brings you a new RV for Christmas, Dave. I imagine traveling would be more fun and relaxing without all the engine troubles.
Gotta agree, for a local / weekend use RV its fine but to live in and travel the country its a little too old, at that age everything ages out

If he was messing with the timing and now its running hot its def the timing, back it off.
Dave and Bella I feel so bad for the both of you and I know from the bottom of my heart that you will be able to fix it. 👋❤️🤗
I hope that You get it working. I hope that You and Bella have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
A Mechanic that I watch says always use O.E.M. parts, but Who's to know where to know where O.E.M. parts come from?
I think the thermostat is sticking slightly. The temp gets high enough to put more pressure, and it opens. Rinse and repeat.
Check the mechanical advance in the distributor to see if it is working freely.
Hey Dave.. We met here at Laposa South when u were checking in the other day... If you need help I'm right down the road.. In my 97 Bounder.
I still think that the drivers side entry door makes your RV a winner!

So happy she started back up, lots of fans around which is nice 😉❤👍
It could be timing or the thermostat sticking or possibly one of your hose clamps is loose and you've lost a little bit of coolant and so you don't have enough coolant circulating around and that could make it run warmer too
Wiggle the disturber shaft like Maverick disturber maybe bearing worn
Tip: take a picture of your license plate on your phone. You'll always have it handy.
Glad you made it okay and hope you fixed the problem.
It's just a hi Dave day! Hi!🤭🖐
Thank you for another awesome video Dave
New temp sending unit and an aftermarket temp gauge a good one
That slow starter cranking speed could be a bad/loose connection or a defective starter motor.

New sensor turning electric fans on?
As soon said before, I put a manual switch and pilot light in the dash to be able to turn on the electric fans.

Running hotter often means you are leaner or advanced . Did you put a different clutch fan on it lately ?
Burp it at the heater hose when you get to La Posa in a cool down a little

Great video Dave! I leave in May for AZ so unfortunately will miss you this year. Good luck with the engine issue, I know you’ll get it fixed!
The radiator is what keeps the engine cool. Change the radiator probably plugged up real bad on the bottom Coors

You may have sand in the bottom half of you radiator from when it was built. I had 4 inches in one of my cars.
I agree it's the thermostat

I know ya got this Dave . I prefer seperate gages for coolant, oil and trans in the bigger trucks/ motorhomes. Maybe add on later ?
Wasn’t that new thermostat a higher temp than the one you took out?
If the thermostat is sticking it will get way hot. It will get hotter when you climb a long hill. Get a good set of gauges
how about the fan

Find a timing light these days at thrift stores for $5
Old stock temp gauge and a new thermostat that you question already🧐

Something else to check Dave, is your valves, maybe do a compression test, what do you think?
Hope to meet you tomorrow, I got your back if I'm able too.
Just a thought but didn't you also connect the fan to the temp sensor? Are they not always on as they were before?
Maybe air in the cooling system? Really leaning towards a slow / flaky thermostat. Maybe some goop shook loose when you worked on the cooling system. Sometimes it's good to be recognized. Fun to see in the videos.
Did you put a new distributor in it my Chevy small block a 79 was worn out, l got a good one from jegs for less than a hundred with cap and coil!
You caked the entire back of the tstat with rtv and that will cause this problem 💯 of the time because it keeps it from opening an closing properly
Was the new thermo control switch for the electric fans the same rating as stock. Maybe ya got ahold of a 195degree when it was running a 180 before.
I say the issue is the newer thermostat.
Slow starter and overheating with you adjusting the timing means you are probably to far advanced.
The Murray thermostats are pretty reliable and with it being 10 degrees cooler than the old one, definitely points back to the timing to far advanced.
You can't win . Me either. Good luck. Merry Christmas Happy New Year to you and Bella.💕💕🐾🐾🎄🎅🤶🎄🥳🎉
Hose partially collapsing underload, sticking thermostat, loss of some coolant, timing. Didn't you install some sort of a valve in line on a heater hose? That may be causing restriction.
Check the antenna fluid….and the flux capacitor
i would install a new gauge that shows degrees and hit the Chevy dealer for a thermostat
Well 1/2 to 3/4 on the temp should be ok ! Well it's opening and closing or it wouldn't be cooling I think get the timing set right and you'll be fine
install a digital gauges.
check distributor bushings any brass shavings in cap
This is a not probably your Temp problem, but I would replace the fuel filter. Gasoline goes bad after a couple months, and those old motorhomes may have had gasoline sitting in the tank for months or years, turning to lacquer.
Could the problem be the distributer advance, mechanical or vacuum, is not working right?
Coolant flush?? Sticky thermostat?? Carb adjustment???
Removing all that emission control crap probably had an effect on the vacuum advance. You may not be able to use the base timing. Set it where you believe it works best.
Get the clutch fan replaced before you get overly frustrated.
You can get an advance curve kit and see if that will get your timing where you want it. It'll come with, if I remember correctly, 3 sets of weights and 2 sets of springs. You just have to play around with it until you get the performance you want. Search GM HEI ignition advance curve kit. They're not expensive.
I'd be your assistant, following you for support. But I'm way over in the South East right now, working on my Cummins.
My Dad and I could Never get an engine to run right with a timming light.
Your over heating might be a transmission heat issue. Your radiator also cools the transmission or is in front of the engine radiator if a separate one therefore adding its heat. Now do I change tranny filter and oil to my possibilities?
Hi Dave & Bella
When you pulled all that stuff off you might not be getting proper vacuum….?
get the carb rebuilt, could be a blocked jet
Hi Dave. I’m also staying here. My name is Linda and im from Cincinnati Ohio.
I bet you get it fixed in no time
atmosphere.. i had the same problem
