The issue with these modern remakes and it’s not a real issue, just a defence for the original creators. It’s the allocated ROM size. Today getting a 8mb rom chip for a fake cartridge or just making an 8mb file is super easy and cheap. Back in the day ROM size was a budget they had to take care of. As the original developers only had 4mbits, which is 512 kilobytes, those guys were working with one hand behind their back. Games like the original Sonic, Golden Axe 1 show you can still make a formidable game on that size, but modern remakes don’t do that. Still pretty cool what Pyron are doing, but for that to have the go ahead back in the day was a tall task, as costs were just way different.
@@sloppynyuszi I would say that "time" and "tools" where even bigger factors. Comercial games are made to coincide with schedules homebrew don't have to adjust to. Also, game developing tools today are much more potent and versatile today. Finally, developers back then did not have ~34 years of experience with the hardware like they do today.
@@sloppynyuszi That's right about ROM chips limiting development. In fact, Sega developed some pretty sophisticated compression algorithms just to keep the ROM size down. That being said, Konami's management definitely cheaped out on the Sunset Riders ROM size versus what was actually available and how much more profitable a better port could have been. Sometimes you have to spend more money to make more money.

Ya, I know the original studio head, and he said its not. It's was made on the same engine and used some assets. They wanted this to be a new game though.
Smash tv reminds me alot of xenocrisis which is a awesome mega drive & Genesis Port and Decap Attack plays alot like Dynamite Headdy with his head being used as a weapon.

Just sstarting my MD collection, so far have: Rocket Knight Streets of Rage 2 Mortal Kombat Sonic 2 Mega Games 6 TMNT Hyperstone ( heck no is it official haha, no game is worth over 100 quid) World of Illusion I heard Sunset Riders isn't very good on the MD and the SNES version is far superior? I was going to trade my WII U games for some more as I can get them all digitally anyways. But I have a kid now so I only get to play briefly in an evening so MD games suit me well as they are rather short.
Yup, you use the face buttons on a 6 button pad for some of these games to mimic the second twin stick shooter. For Smash TV it had two arcade sticks per player and so is classed as a twin stick shooter, even on these console games.
Has anybody experienced co op/link up mode on Zero Tolerance? I heard the cables were mail order only and are now extremely rare, apparently you can make one by soldering together 2 female Megadrive controller ends? I wouldn't dare destroy official controllers to try this out, but I definitely would give it a try with some crappy ones from Ali Express 🤣😎👍 PS , please, please, please do an episode on the 4 player adapter and the compatible games 🙏
Nope, they were new games from the same developer. Climax even confirmed this, however I think several characters some several Climax games made it into Dark Savior.

That's awesome to hear. I love the game. Dark Savior was just a game made by the same team, it was created as a new IP but of course that team would have been influenced by their past games.
@@RetroGamerBoy Ahh, that makes a lot of sense about the team and Dark Savior. Thanks Mike. I only got to play Demons for a few minutes last night so I'm settling in and getting ready for a long play tonight.
Imagine Comix Zone made today with cell shaded graphics and an Arkham style combat system. Take. My. Money.
That would be amazing.
I always thought Kid Chameleon could have used a sequel or overhaul.
With today's indie dev that's possible.
Very cool video about these hits on Megadrive/Genesis ! We recently made a video about "Comix Zone" and "Ranger X" on Lord Paddle, I hope you'll see this ! I really love "Alien Soldier", this is one of the best run and gun shooter on Mega drive and a true "Treasure" game - no puns intended :)) - for the fans ! Nice video Mike ! ;)
Thank you Sir, I'll go check out this video.
@@RetroGamerBoy You are welcome ! See you soon ! ;)
Sonic obviously got a sequel on the Dreamcast. What other Genesis/Megadrive classics saw sequels on the Dreamcast? I’m thinking not many, which seems unwise.
Phantasy Star, Ecco, Thunder Force had a concept/prototype. There are probably more.
Dynamite Heady and Gain Ground should have been on the list.
Ohhh Dynamite Heady, that is a great looking game.
Landstalker is my absolute favourite Genesis game, and it bums me out that Climax folded before they made the remake and planned sequels on the PSP
Yup it's a real pitty
I think Ristar can be in this kind of list 😎
It is, there are quite a few. I had to limit my list to make sure the video was not too long.
I believe Total carnage was the sequel to smash tv as almost every mum n pop video game store go to confirms it . I have both games and they play almost identical .
Ya, I know the original studio head, and he said its not. It's was made on the same engine and used some assets. They wanted this to be a new game though.
ComixZone is such a good game, too bad there is no version for SNES or any other.
I'm so surprised they did not make a sequel.
I always considered Alien Storm as part of a Golden Axe quadrilogy. The engine was very similar, same move sets, so... yeah. Great list Mike!
Interesting, I had not considered that.
Smash tv reminds me alot of xenocrisis which is a awesome mega drive & Genesis Port and Decap Attack plays alot like Dynamite Headdy with his head being used as a weapon.
Xenocrisis was inspired by Smash TV
And Soleil needed a sequel, for sure.
I still don't have that game in my collection.
How about Ghostbusters on genesis? Awesome game that never got a sequel.
There are a few out there for sure.
I don't know about the home ports of Alien Storm even though i own it but the arcade version is just awesome 👍.
It's frikin amazing, the little intro at the beginning is brilliant.
TOKI goes ape spit
Yup, that's another one.
Hi Mike. Excellent video as always. And I hope you'll keep us updated regarding your own Mega Drive project.
That being said check out what the developer Pyron of the SF romhack is currently working on regarding a Sunset Riders remake:
ruclips.net/video/iHR2DhfFhT4/видео.html
I'm curious what your thoughts are regarding this remake. Take care and keep up the good work! Regards, Duncan
I love what they are doing, I'l make a video on it at some point.
What about Dark Savior on the Saturn? That's essentially the sega follow up for Landstalker. Or did the sequel need to be on the same hardware?
The sequel could be on any hardware. Dark Savior though was not a sequel, it was a mash-up of different Climax games. It also did not carry over the story or the universe, Gamespot called it a sequel in a review or preview and it seems to have stuck.
Great vid dude
Thanks, it was fun to research.
Just sstarting my MD collection, so far have:
Rocket Knight
Streets of Rage 2
Mortal Kombat
Sonic 2
Mega Games 6
TMNT Hyperstone ( heck no is it official haha, no game is worth over 100 quid)
World of Illusion
I heard Sunset Riders isn't very good on the MD and the SNES version is far superior?
I was going to trade my WII U games for some more as I can get them all digitally anyways. But I have a kid now so I only get to play briefly in an evening so MD games suit me well as they are rather short.
Awesome start, you can always get copies. These games are super expensive now and there is nothing wrong with building out your games with clones.
4:24 Twin stick shooter on the Sega Genesis?!?!?!
Yup, you use the face buttons on a 6 button pad for some of these games to mimic the second twin stick shooter. For Smash TV it had two arcade sticks per player and so is classed as a twin stick shooter, even on these console games.
@@RetroGamerBoy Cool! Thanks for explaining it!
You does what nintendont!
😂 Thanks
I preferred magical hat.... I know I'm the minority on that one.
Hey we all have different taste's, it's what makes gaming so awesome.
I have a cable, it works amazingly. The original developer has also release how you can make your own cable.
What? Timestalkers on Dreamcast and Dark Savior on Saturn had no connection with Landstalker? 🤔
Nope, they were new games from the same developer. Climax even confirmed this, however I think several characters some several Climax games made it into Dark Savior.
Some classic games there mate👍🏻
Yup, this console had some great games.
Loved Landstalker. Favourite game ever. Wasn't Dark Saviour on Saturn considered a quasi sequel?
They were new games made by the same team. Dark Saviour did have characters from other Climax games including Landstalker.
Total Carnage is the sequel for Smash TV
... and Smash TV is the sequel of Robotron 2084.
It's just the same game engine, it's not a sequel to the game.
@@RetroGamerBoy ...same designer, similar gameplay mechanics with twinstick-controls, same publisher and no exact competitor on the market back then. I'd say your definition of a sequel is a bit nit picky in this case.
@@vetodrom That is just a fact. A new IP is not a sequel having built some big AAA games I know my stuff 👍
@@RetroGamerBoy Well, I doubt this here. Esp because those are those three quite similar games by the same person who defined twin stick shooters as we know them today. And it was not always the case that sequels came up with the same name.
We also had Time Stalkers for Dreamcast in the Landstalker series
And Dark Savior on Saturn which was spiritally connected.
Alundra on the PSX is it's spiritual successor, written and programmed by the same team.
Unfortunately no direct sequels, all spiritual successors bot not continuation of the franchise. I wish they would.
Still waiting on Barney's Hide And Seek part 2
You and the rest of the MD / Genesis community. The #1 requsted game.
@@RetroGamerBoy it could be called Barney: Seek and Destroy
Sword of Vermillion
Good call.
ALL YOUR BASE OUR BELONG TO US! 🤦🏻♂️🤣
😂😥
Alient Storm should def have a sequel
For sure, I love that game.
@@RetroGamerBoy love how they keep changing dynamics to keep the game interesting. Gallery shooting mode? fun! Running stages? even better!. I can only think of Ninja Turtles trying similar stuff
@@diegocrusius it was such a dynamic game and the pace changes were amazing.
Whos the 3D Girl on your thumbnail? What game is that from?
It's Karen from Alienstorm.
I might be wrong here but i always thought Alundra was the sequel to Landstalker.
Not a sequel but written and programmed by the same people.
@@OllyDee123 I see thank you!
No, just by the same people. But it's a stunning game on the PS1.
Sega should really be ashamed of themselves with Comic Zone. You don't put a copyright on a specific gamestyle and never develop another game in that style...
While Alien Storm is an original game many people call it the spiritual succesor to gunstar heroes
But Gunstar Heroes got a sequel, so it can't be a spiritual successor. The sequel was on the DS.
Too bad that Alien Soldier had a whole lot of content cut. If the they rereleased the game with all that content … it would count as a sequel. ;)
For sure, I would love to see the full version.
JJ & Jeff lol
Wrong console, and hell no.
Wasn't that Turbo-Grafx?
@@RetroGamerBoy Yes it was and I think they should of made a sequel to Keith Courage In Alpha Zones. They had a demo for Japan warrior 2(China Warrior 2) for the Supergrafx but it never came out.
@@ostiariusalpha Why not somebody can make it better for the Sega Genesis.
did time stalker on dreamcast have anything to do with the gens game?
It was a crossover game that featured several Climax games in it.
Kid Chameleon.
Great game, should have got a sequel.
